Germans gave the present
name of the ancient
celebration in honour of
Holy Valpurgy. She came
from England to Germany
in the eighth century,
founded
a monastery
there. She was very loved
by people. After her death
she was canonized.
Celts had eight holidays.
They divided a year into
eight equal parts. The most
famous are three: Imbolc, or
Groundhog Day (celebrated
in Russia as Candlemas –
day meeting of winter and
spring), Beltane (April 30)
and Samhain (October 31).
Walpurgis
night
is
celebrated on the night
from April 30 to may 1. In
the middle ages, there was
a belief that this night
witches gathered on the
high mountain Brocken,
rode on the broom,
lighted bonfires, made
potions, and danced.
The Celts believed days
from evening to evening
and not from morning to
morning: Halloween and
Walpurgis night. the Celts
signified night before 1
May the arrival of summer
time – «Grand sun».
A deer was very popular
among the
ancient
hunters. It remained the
symbol
of virility and
fertility. That is the Celtic
Cernunnos had the horns
of a deer!
Another symbol of Beltane
were fires. This day the
ancient Celts released the
cattle from the stables to
the
pastures
after
wintering. They had to
drive animals between two
rows of fires to save them
from winter ailments.
In the folklore of European
nations a broom is the main
means
of
witches’
transportation. Sitting astride
the
broomstick
witches
streaked in the sky for the
Sabbath!
Nowadays some European
countries celebrate this
holiday in different ways.
In Great Britain and Ireland
people dance around a pole
decorated with flowers and
ribbons. They choose the
may Queen – the girl, which
is to wear green cloth loved
by the elves. The Queen is
like a mediator in the
dialogue between people
and the People of hills.
In the Czech Republic on
the eve of Walpurgis night
people pour sand on the
threshold. Witches have to
count every grain of sand
in order to enter the house.
In Scandinavia people
make bonfires to draw
spring, to scare away the
spirits. Traditionally they
eat Gravlax – fresh salmon
marinated in salt, sugar
and dill.
Finns believe that at
midnight of the last day of
April witches sit on every
top of hills and so you
needn’t go out to see a
witch.
In Germany with the
sunset people begin to
shout and blow up
firecrackers. Because the
best remedy is noise.
