Application May 15, 1935, Serial No. 21,625 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-237) The invention relates to a waistband fastener for under-garments and more especially to a re silient strap fastener for waistbands of under garments. ; The primary object of the invention is the pro vision of a fastener of this character, wherein through the use of a resilient strap carried by a waistband of an under-garment the said waist band can be conveniently fastened and will au 10 tomatically adjust itself to the body of the wearer of the garment at the waist line and will eliminate discomfort to such wearer and avoid the breaking away of fasteners, as, for example, buttons when engaged in button holes resultant from excessive strain thereon, particularly when the abdomen of the wearer becomes distended. Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein button fasteners or the like as conventionally employed ends being stitched or otherwise fastened as at 8 to the waistband 5 with the intermediate por tion of such strap free of the said waistband and carried by this strap at the proper location is a button 9 adapted for engagement with a com panion button hole I0 provided in the waistband ‘ 5 for the fastening of the front opening 6 closed. The series of straps l are located at one end of the waistband 5 next to the front opening 6 al though the same may be otherwise located and the straps of this series are arranged in substan tially parallel relation to each other and spaced the required distance from one another so that the buttons 9 as carried thereby will be properly located with respect to the button holes Ill com panions thereto. waist line. A further object of the invention is the provi It will appear from Figures 2 and 3 of the draw ing that when the buttons 9 are engaged in the it) button holes ID on the wearing of the garment A by a person when strain occurs at the waistband 5 the straps ‘I yield or give in accordance with the strain and at the same time the garment A will be snugly fastened at the waist line of a wear er about the same and the waistband of the gar sion of a fastener of this character, which is sim ment will be self-adjustable, the straps l yielding with under-garments will be yieldably carried at the waistband of such garment to assure ?rm ?tting of the garment at the waist line of a wear er and at the same time permitting yieldability of the garment and a snug ?tting thereof at the 25 thereof next to the front opening 6, in this in stance, is a series of elastic straps ‘I, each at its ple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effi cient in its operation, readily and easily applied to a garment, strong, durable, self-adjusting, and 30 inexpensive to manufacture. With these and other objects in View, the in vention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be “ hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended. In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an under-gar 40 ment showing the fastener constructed in accord ance with the invention applied thereto, in this instance, there being three fasteners, one in fas tening position and the others free. Figure 2 is a top edge view of the waistband of the garment showing the fastener in fastening position. Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the fastener yieldably extended. Similar reference characters indicate corre sponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing. Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a body garment, in this instance, repre senting a pair of shorts which is the present-day type of men’s under-garments and is formed with the waistband 5, this garment being created with the front opening 6 carried through the waistband on the distending of the abdomen and thus re lieving discomfort to the wearer. In lieu of the buttons 9 and the button holes other fasteners may be employed in association 30 with the yieldable straps l, the latter being in the form of elastic bands and this is contem plated within the scope of the invention. Each strap 7 is normally contracted and in this . condition fastened to the waistband 5 so that it will be smooth and lying ?at against the same and when strain is exerted on the button 9 the said strap becomes extended from the position shown in Figure 2 to the position shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. What is claimed is: In combination with a nether garment having a waistband and inner and outer fore ?aps to close the fly opening thereof, an elastic strap ly ing against the face of the band with its longer di mension disposed in the direction of the periphery of the band, the strap being carried by the band on the inner flap of the garment but being se cured to the band only at the extremities of the strap, and a fastener secured to the outer face of the strap at an intermediate point in the length thereof, the outer flap of the garment having the waistband portion thereof formed with means to engage said fastener, whereby yielding of the ’ waistband to body distension applies a stress to the strap ?rst to but one section thereof and later to both sections of the same. 5 as is conventional. 60 Joined with the waistband 5 at the outside 40 HENRY HERRLE.
