‘The present invention "pertains tony-shuttle
looms,and has more particular reference to the
shuttle picking mechanism of ‘such looms.
Looms ofthe type to which my invention per
tains commonly include a reciprocating lay, a
:pickerstick carried by the lay, acam shaft ex
itending'widthwise of the loom and having a pick
cam revolving therewith in a vertical plane,- and
mechanism
operated by the pick cam to impart

~the " shuttle picking'motion to the pickerstick.
:.The picking mechanism. generally used prior to
the presentginventioni included-a pick shaft of
the'vertical'pbell 'crank type positioned with. its
15 .:axis ‘horizontal and at right ‘ angles‘ to ' the‘ cam
"shaft,"vone arm-of the’bell'crank cooperating with
{the-‘pick cam and the other-arm thereof-being
connected toithe picker stick through a‘ lug strap.
Suchpriorrmechanism ‘isl'subject to ‘the disad
vantage that the‘ required angular . relation of
'20 ‘connected *parts "is-conducive of .inei?ciency of
the mechanism and causes considerableundesir
able "end thrust on r the :pick vv‘shaft and‘cam
shaft.
‘\An :object-ofithe ‘presentdnvention is? to pro

r-ticalw axis,. ‘so "constructed and" :positioned as‘ to
operate-efficiently"and without undesirable ‘end
thrust.
.The foregoing and other objects-of the inven
tion are conveniently accomplished in _ the :pre
ferred embodimentyherein disclosed. Suchpre
fer-red embodiment is illustrated on the :accom
panying drawings, of which:

The loom shown‘ on the drawings is". of conven
tional construction except that ithasapplied to
"it‘ the picking mechanism of my invention. ‘Ac
cordingly, the vdrawings show only such of the
conventional-parts of the loom as- are‘necessary
.towaniunderstanding of the present -‘ invention.
Such conventional ' parts . includev the loom frame

of which the left hand loom side I is shown, a
.horizontalrocker shaft 2 on which the lay. 3 .is
reciprocated as .by a .pitman 4. and crank '5, ‘a
picker stick 6 carried by thelay and having a ,.

‘The lay reciprocates toward and from the front

The picker stick 6 is approximately vertical,.it "10
having however a forward and'rearward move
ment with the lay'and a. pivotal picking move
ment in the plane of the lay as .is well known
in the art. At lower end of the picker stick is ‘7.

operated as hereinafter described to pull..the
picker stick inwardly, i. e. toward the right, ‘Fig.

the lay. The lug strap l2, as shown, differs‘ from
lug straps heretofore used, in that it comprises a
‘rigid link having a universal ori'ball-and-socket __

is operated by a novel mechanism including a

arm l5 moves is not quite horizontal, but is in
arm engaging said cam and a depending arm
in front of said cam, a bell crank lever oscillating
ways below the level of the lug strap support il l.
The arm N5 of the bell crank lever 14 extends

on a stud 23 which is ?xed in a bracket 24 on the

rearwardly extending cam follower arm 25 which
engages the ‘pick cam 20. The arm 25 may in
clude a cam-engaging roller 25. The lever also
has a depending arm 21 which is located in front
.30 of the pick cam. The bracket 24 carries a bumper
28 which is engaged by a stop 29 on the arm 25
to limit overthrow of the pick-lever.
The arm l6 of the bell crank lever 14 termi
nates substantially in horizontal alignment with
35 and in front of the lower end of the depending
arm 21 of the pick lever. The link 22 therefore
extends substantially horizontally and is at all
times at least approximately at a right angle to
both the arm l6 and the arm 21.‘ The link is
40 connected to the lower end of the arm 2T by
means of a suitable ball-and-socket connection
30 and is connected to the arm l6 by a similar
connection 3|.

The operation of the mechanism will be obvious
45 and need not be described in detail. It is noted,
however, that connected parts of the mecha
nism are so related as to operate‘ freely and effi
ciently without the undesirable end thrust and
side thrust present in prior shuttle picking mech
50 anisms.
Having fully disclosed the preferred embodi
ment of my invention, I claim:

1. A ?y shuttle loom having a reciprocating
lay, a picker stick carried by the lay, a pick cam
revolving in a vertical plane, a pick lever oscillat
ing on a horizontal axis in front of said cam, said
lever having a cam follower arm engaging said
cam and a depending arm, a bell crank lever 05
cillating on an approximately vertical axis, said
60 bell crank lever having angularly related arms
one of which extends approximately normal to
the plane of movement of said pick lever and
the other of which extends approximately normal
to the plane of the picker stick, a link connect~
ing said depending arm with the ?rst said arm
of said bell crank lever, and a lug strap connect
ing the other arm of said bell crank lever with
the picker stick.
2. A ?y shuttle loom having a reciprocating

cam revolving on a horizontal axis which extends
widthwise of the loom, a pick lever positioned'in
‘the same vertical plane as said cam and oscil
lating on a horizontal axis parallel to the axis

4. A ?y shuttle loom having a lay reciprocat 30
ing on a horizontal rocker shaft, a substantially
vertical picker stick carried by the lay, a lug strap
support on said picker stick intermediate the ends
thereof, a cam shaft extending widthwise of the
loom, a pick cam on said cam shaft, a bell crank
lever mounted for oscillation about a vertical
axis'located between said lay and said cam shaft
and inwardly from said picker stick, said lever
having angularly’ related arms one of which ex
tends forwardly from said axis and terminates
at a point approximately in the plane of said ‘
picker stick but inwardly from and below the
level of said‘ lug strap support, a lug strap con
necting the forward end of said arm with said
lug strap support, and means operated by said
pick cam and engaging the other arm of said bell '- '
crank lever, for oscillating said bell crank lever
and thereby actuating said picker stick.
.5. A ?y shuttle loom having a lay reciprocat
ing on a horizontal rocker shaft, a substantially
vertical picker stick carried by the lay, a lug i
strap support on’ said picker stick intermediate
the ends ‘thereof, a cam shaft extending width
wise of the loom, a pick cam ?xed to said cam
shaft and revolving in a vertical plane, a bell
crank lever mounted for oscillation about a ver- "‘
tical axis located between said lay and said cam '
shaft and inwardly from said picker stick, said
lever having angularly related arms one of which
extends forwardly from ‘said axis and terminates
at a point inwardly from the picker stick but ap~
proximately in the plane thereof, a lug strap con
meeting the forward end of said arm with said
lug strap support, the other arm of said bell
crank lever extending inwardly of the loom from
said axis and terminating at a point in front of
said pick cam, and means operated by said pick
cam and engaging said other arm of said bell
crank lever for oscillating said lever to thereby

6. A fly shuttle loom having a lay reciprocat
ing on a horizontal rocker ‘shaft, a substantially
vertical picker stick carried by the lay, a lug
strap support on said picker stick intermediate
the ends thereof, a cam shaft extending width 75

shaft and revolving in a vertical plane, a pick
lever positioned in the same vertical plane as
said cam and oscillating on a horizontal axis
parallel to said cam shaft, said pick lever hav
