Application July 30, 1936, Serial N0. 93,509 Renewed December 15, 1937 1 Claim. (Cl. 144-104) The invention relates to a drilling brace press the chuck I8 of this brace carrying the drill I9 and more especially to a combined brace holder will have bearing on a rest bracket 20, it being ' suitably perforated at ZI for the passage of the and press. The primary object of the invention is the drill I9 therethrough. The bracket 20 is slid 5 provision of a device of this character, wherein a drill brace can be conveniently held in working position with respect to a piece of work to be drilled and such brace can be fed or pressed to the work for the proper drilling thereof, the de 10 vice being of novel construction and will assure the proper pressure upon the brace during the drilling period for the successful drilling of a piece of work. Another object of the invention is the provision 15 of a device of this character, which is simple in its make-up, thoroughly reliable and effective in its operation, convenient for the handling of the brace, assuring the proper feeding of the bit to the work, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture. With these and other objects in View, the in vention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended. In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section the device showing the drill brace ñtted therein. Figure 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of 30 of " Figure 2. Similar reference characters indicate corre sponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing. Referring to the drawing in detail, the device 40 comprises a base or bed 5, in this instance flat and has rising from its heel side thereof a crane or upright 6 provided with a forwardly directed upper end 1. This end 'I is formed with a guide head 8 through which works a vertically disposed ably fitted on a vertically disposed guide rod 22 fastened to the crane or upright 6 in the bed or base 5. Beneath the bracket 20 and about the guide rod 22 is a coiled compression spring 23 so that after the bracket is moved downwardly under pressure applied to the brace I6 in the 10 operation thereof, it will be returned to inoper ative position as said pressure is relieved. About the ratchet wheel I2 and freely sup ported on the journal II is a press handle 24 ñtted with a pawl or dog 25 for engaging the 15 ratchet wheel I2. The said pawl or dog 25 has its stem 26 slidably fitted in the handle 24 and about this stem is a compression spring 21 which biases the pawl or dog 25 into engagement with the ratchet wheel I2 for the locking of the handle therewith. The spring 21 plays against a linger or hand operated piece 28 ñtting the outer end of the stem 26 and projected from the outer end of the handle 24. The piece 28 is operated to release the pawl or dog 25 from the ratchet wheel I2 so that the handle 24 can swing inde pendently of this wheel and also have the adjust ment of such handle so that the rack 9 can-be turned to exert pressure upon the brace I6 down wardly for the feeding of the bit I9 in a piece of work operated upon thereby for the boring of such work, the bracket 20 yielding to the pres sure applied to the brace IB ‘against the resist ance of the spring 23. The brace I6 can be raised and lowered by the handle 24 through the coaction of the gear wheel Il] meshing with the rack 9. The base or bed 5 20 25 30 35 is formed with a clearance 29 for the drill or bit I9 when boring through the work during drilling operation to avoid damage to the drill or bit when 40 passing through the work and avoiding its con tact with the bed or base 5 in the use of the device. v What is claimed is: The gear I0 has its journal II which is fixed A brace holder and press comprising a base, a 45 crane rising from the base and having a forward ly directed upper end, a guide head on the for thereto passed through the side walls of said wardly directed upper end, a vertically disposed 45 toothed rack 9 acted upon by a feed gear I0. guide and to one side of the guide is a ratchet gear I2, the same being fixed to the journal I I for 5 O a purpose presently described. The rack 9 at its lower end has coupled at I3 therewith for free swivel movement a clamping head I4 for accommodating the terminal handle knob I5 of a brace I 6, the head I4 being split at 55 I'I at intervals to permit of the bending of such head about the handle knob I5 of said brace as is clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. The knob I5 when engaged in the clamp I4 60 will suspend the brace I6 from the rack 9 while toothed rack fitting said head, a feed gear jour naled in said head and meshing with said toothed 50 rack, a ratchet acting lever arranged with the head and active upon the feed gear for the turn ing of the same, a coupling carried by said rack at its lower end, and a bit brace knob receiving head swiveled to the rack by said coupling and having splits at intervals for the bending of the head about the brace knob for its clamping there by and vsuspension of said brace from the rack.
