trolled by the pressure of ?uid lubricant, and is disc by means of bolts 44. The diaphragms‘ are

is secured to the carrier disc by means of bolts
Fluid under pressure is supplied to the chamber
I01. Anannularv follower I08 is mounted within III through a passage 46 in ‘the crank- shaft I5‘v
the chamber I09 and is secured to the diaphragm and a passage I36 in the hub I02 of the carrier
10 I05, so that upon an increase of ?uid pressure
disc IOI which registers with a passage I3'I- in 10
within the chamber III, the follower is moved
leftward with a series of disc operating pins II2,
one of which is shown, secured to the follower
' I08 and extending through guide opening H3 in
the carrier disc IOI.
.
A series of discs III! and H5 are adapted to be
clamped between the outer ends of the pins _I I2
‘and a supportingv disc II6 having a hub portion
I I‘! that is keyed upon the hub I02 by a key I20.
The clutch discs I“ are adapted‘ tofturn with
the ?y wheel 23 andare provided with teeth II8,
which engage teeth IIB that are formed integral
with metal rings I2I which are secured to the ?y
wheel 23 by means of bolts I22. Additional discs
III may be added and the capacity of the clutch
increased by increasing the number of .rings I2I
su?iciently to accommodate the added discs III
and H5.
‘
The clutch discs I I5 are adapted to rotate with
30 the compressor crank shaft I5 and the ‘carrier
disc IN, and are provided with holes I23through
which a series of pins I24, one of which is shown,
extend. The pins I24 ?t snugly into alined open-y
ings I25 and I28 in the carrier disc IN and the
supporting disc II6, respectively. ‘
The inner face of the hub I I‘! of the supporting
disc II6 engages a shoulder I21 on the’hub I 02‘,
so as to limit the inward movement of the supi
porting disc H5. Sufficient space is provided
40 between the disc engaging face I28 of the sup
porting disc H6 and the disc engaging face I29
‘ of the carrier disc IOI to permit slight separation
of the discs H4 and I I5, so that the ?y wheel 23
may rotate without imparting movement to the
carrier disc IOI.
-
- When sufficient pressure is exerted within the
chamber III, the follower I08‘ is forced toward
the left, so that the outer‘ends of the pins “2
are forced against the adjacent outer disc H5.
The ‘pressure applied to the outer disc ‘H5 is
transmitted to the discs H4 and H5 disposed be~
tween the supporting disc H6 and the outer
clutch disc I I 5 engaged by the pins. The gradual
increase of pressure on the diaphragm I05 causes
the clutch disc to gradually accelerate the crank
shaft I5 until it is rotating at the same speed
as the motor. Sufficient pressure is ordinarily
applied to the clutch disc to prevent slipping of
the discs while the clutch is in connecting posi
60
tion.
a
The supporting disc II6 ‘ is- locked upon the
shaft I5 by a threaded nut, I_3I which is threaded
the clamping plate I06.
‘ a
-
The entire clutch assembly is protected by a
?anged casing I38, which is secured to the motor
housing I39 and to the end plate Ill-of the com
. pressor housing I42 by means of bolts I43.
It 15' '
will be noted that the mounting for the clutch
discs Ill is such that the crank shaft I5 may be
moved to the right and away from the ?y wheel 23 by movement in the direction of the axis of the ‘
crank shaft, so that the clutch device may be 20
readily disassembled for inspection and repairs.
It is obvious that the‘ improved clutch and con
trolling mechanism is applicable to any form of;
apparatus having driving shafts which are to be
releasably connected and that changes, additions 25
and omissions may be made in the construction!
of the clutch and the’ control mechanism therefor
without departing from the spirit of the inven
tion.
.

Having now described my invention, what I 30
claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters
Patent, is:
