The clutch discs I I5 are adapted to rotate with

disc IN, and are provided with holes I23through
which a series of pins I24, one of which is shown,
extend. The pins I24 ?t snugly into alined open-y
ings I25 and I28 in the carrier disc IN and the
supporting disc II6, respectively. ‘
The inner face of the hub I I‘! of the supporting
disc II6 engages a shoulder I21 on the’hub I 02‘,
so as to limit the inward movement of the supi
porting disc H5. Sufficient space is provided
40 between the disc engaging face I28 of the sup
porting disc H6 and the disc engaging face I29
‘ of the carrier disc IOI to permit slight separation
of the discs H4 and I I5, so that the ?y wheel 23
may rotate without imparting movement to the
carrier disc IOI.
- When sufficient pressure is exerted within the
chamber III, the follower I08‘ is forced toward
the left, so that the outer‘ends of the pins “2
are forced against the adjacent outer disc H5.
The ‘pressure applied to the outer disc ‘H5 is
transmitted to the discs H4 and H5 disposed be~
tween the supporting disc H6 and the outer
clutch disc I I 5 engaged by the pins. The gradual
increase of pressure on the diaphragm I05 causes
the clutch disc to gradually accelerate the crank
shaft I5 until it is rotating at the same speed
as the motor. Sufficient pressure is ordinarily
applied to the clutch disc to prevent slipping of
the discs while the clutch is in connecting posi

' 1. A clutch device comprising a rotatable shaft
having a passage therein through which ?uid

ing connection between said shafts.
2. A clutch device comprising a disc member-,50
adapted to be secured to a shaft, a diaphragm
mounted onsaid disc, a guide member having
guide openings therein and carried by said disc
for clamping said diaphragm to said .disc so as
to provide a ?uid-tight chamber between said 55
disc and said diaphragm for receiving ?uid under
pressure, a follower for said diaphragm'having
operating pins extending ‘through said guide
openings, a clutch member operated by said fol
lower through the medium of said pins, a second
clutch member adapted to be secured to a second
shaft for cooperating with said ?rst clutch mem
upon a threaded portion I32 of the shaft I5. The
