ADJUSTABLE BOX PLATE

The present invention pertains to fly shuttle
looms and- more particularly to shuttle boxes for
such looms.
Looms of the type towhich my invention ap
5 plies commonly include a lay sword, a lay beam
fixed to the frontl face of the sword,la shuttle box
including a back plate having a shuttle guiding
surface, and means for securing such plate to the
lay sword and lay beam. Theshuttle guiding
10' plate must be accurately positioned relative to the
lay beam, and relative to the reed, in order that
the shuttle may be properly picked into and out
of the shuttle box.
I propose to provide a loom having a lay sword,
15 lay beam and shuttle box including a back shuttle
guiding plate as aforesaid, and adjustable sup
porting means located at the back of the lay
sword for supporting the shuttle( guiding plate,
whereby the supporting means shall be con
20 veniently accessible for adjustment purposes.
The foregoing?and other objects of the inven
tion are accomplished in the construction illus
trated on the accompanying drawing, of which:
Fig. 1 is a view in rear elevation of part of a

my invention applied thereto;

A lug I0 on the plate
1 ,is preferably formed; integrally with; the plate
and j extendsv> rearwardly, substantially horizon-A
tally, from the back of the plate. The lug IU ex
tends through anlopening II in the sword 2 and
is fixed to supporting means at the back of »the
sword. The opening II is appreciably larger
than the lug I0, to permit adjustment- ofthe lug lO
and box plate. The Asole supportingmeans for
theplate 1 maybe that shown at the back of the ~
sword.

A The embodiment-of supporting means shown
includes a member I2. which is located ladjacent
the opening II and which has angularly related
legs I3 andwI4. The .leg I3 is -Vertical whilev the
leg 4I4 is horizontal-and has an upper horizontal
surface on which the rearward end of the luglll -
rests. The. vertical leg, I3` engages theinside. of . 20
a Y.vertical flange LI5‘on' the lay sword -and is
clamped t'o such flange by a bolt I6.` ` The bolt I6
passes through the leg I3 and through a Vertical
slot I1 in the flange I5. This bolt and slot con
nection permits the member I2 to be adjusted ver
tically. by sliding the bolt up or down in the slot,
Fig. 2 is a View in cross-section taken approxi
mately on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the construction shown
or angularly by pivoting the member about the
bolt. It is noted that the bolt I6 is horizontal

The lug I0 is fixed to the upper face of the leg
I4 by a bolt I8. This bolt passes through a slot
I9 in the lug I0 and a slot 20 in the leg I4. The

of the usual lay beam I which is fixed to the
front face of a sword 2 below the top thereof in
the usual manner. The sword 2 is at the left
hand side of the loom and another sword, not
40 shown, supports the other end of the lay beam.
The lay beam and lay swords reciprocate toward
and from the front of the loom, which is toward
the right on Fig. 2. A suitable reed 3 is carried
by the lay, and at least one shuttle box is provided
45 at each side of the loom.
The shuttle box shown on the drawing is the
left hand box and consists of a floor 4, a front
box plate 5 and a back box plate 6. The floor 4
is formed by the upper surface of the usual metal
50 lay end, so-called, which is fixed on the lay beam
I. The front box plate 5 is fixed to the lay beam
and the inner or right hand end of the back box
plate is adjustably supported by the lay sword 2
in a manner to be described.

slot I9 extends longitudinally of the lug, which is
forwardly and rearwardly of the loom, and the 35
slot 20 extends longitudinally of the lay, or at`
right angles to the slot I9. When the bolt I8 is
tightened they shuttle guiding plate 1 and lug Il)
are supported by the member I2 and may be ad
justed therewith. Thus, angular adjustment of
the member I2 about the bolt I6 will adjust the
vertical inclination of the plate 1 and vertical ad-v
justment of the member will move the plate ver
tically.

The bolt I8 and slots I9 and 20 permit adjust
ment of the plate 1 relative tov the member I2.
More specifically, when the bolt I8 is loosened the
plate 1 and lug I0 may be moved horizontally for
wardly or rearwardly or may be pivoted about the
bolt to align the shuttle guiding surface 8 relative> 50
to the lay beam and reed. I havenot shown'any
means for supporting the outer or left hand end~
of the back box plate because such means, if em
ployed, may be of any suitable usual construction 1 '
which will permit the plate 1 to be adjusted by

the improved supporting means: above described.
The extending of the lug l0 through the open
ing an integral lug extending rearwardly through

tion of the supporting and adjusting means at a
larly adjustable supporting member secured to
place where there is ample space and no inter
ference with other loom parts. The supporting
and adjusting devices may therefore be of the
size required to provide ample strength and
rigidity.,_ Such devices are also convenientlyac
10 cessible for adjustment purposes.
Having fully disclosed the preferred embodi
ment of my invention, I claim:
1. In a loom, the combination of a lay sword,
a lay beam ñxed to the front face of said sword
15 below the top thereof, a shuttle box including a
back shuttle guiding plate positioned in front of
said sword above‘said lay beam, said plate hav
ing a lug extending rearwardly through an open
ing in said sword, and supporting means located
20 at the back of the sword for supporting said lug
and thereby said plate, said’means being adjust
able to adjust the vertical inclination of said
plate.

2. In a loom, the combination of a lay sword,
25 a lay beam fixed tothe 'front face of said sword
below the top thereof, a shuttle box including a
back shuttle guiding plate positioned in front of
said sword above said lay beam,y said plate hav
ing a lug extending rearwardly through an open
ing in said sword, a supporting member located
at the back of the sword and adjustably secured

thereto for adjustment both vertically and angu
larly about a horizontal axis, and means adjust
ably securing said lugto said supporting mem
ber for adjustment of said lug land plate forward
ly and rearwardly.

3. In a loom,` the combination of a lay sword,
alay beam fixed to the front face of said sword
' below the top thereof, a shuttle box -including a

said sword above said lay beam, said plate hav
an opening in said sword, a vertically and angu
the back of said sword adjacent said opening,
and means for fixing said lug to said supporting 5
member whereby said plate is supported by and
adjustable with said member.
4. In a loom, the combination of a lay sword,
a lay beam fixed to the front face of said sword
below the top thereof, a shuttle box including a 10
back shuttle guiding plate positioned in front of
said sword above said lay beam, said plate hav
ing an integral lug extending rearwardly through
an opening in said sword, a supporting member
located at the back of the sword adjacent said 15
opening, said member having a horizontal sur
face on which said lug rests, means securing said
member to said sword for adjustment about a
horizontal axis extending longitudinally of said
lay beam, and means securing said lug on said 20
surface for adjustment of said lug and plate with
said member and forwardly and rearwardly rela
tive thereto.
` 5. In a loom, the combination of a lay sword,
a lay beam fixed to the front face of said sword 25
below the top thereof, a shuttle box including a
back shuttle guiding plate positioned in front of
said sword above said lay beam, said plate having
an integral lug extending rearwardly through an
opening in said sword, a supporting member po 30
sitioned at the back of said sword, said member
having a vertical leg and a horizontal leg adja
cent said opening, means securing said vertical
leg to said sword for adjustment'of said member
both vertically and angularly about a horizontal
axis extending longitudinally of the lay beam,
and means securing said lug to said horizontal
leg for adjustment of said lug and plate both
with said member and forwardly and rearwardly
relative thereto.
