The present invention relates to straight knit
ting machines equipped with a Jacquard petinet
attachment and more particularly to the narrow
ing device for such machines.

To produce full fashioned stockings upon a
straight knitting machine equipped with a Jac
quard petinet attachment, several narrowing op
erations are required. Besides the Jacquard pat
ternings adapted to be produced at any place of
10 ‘ the fabric by a narrowing comb extending over
the whole width of the division and provided with
a narrowing point or tickler needle for each of
the frame needles in the division, the narrowings
at the shank, the calf, the heel and the toe, and
the widening atthe heelalso must be effected.
For the purpose of avoiding the disadvantages
of the use of a one-part narrowing comb which
poses the outer parts of the'narrowing device
perform separate but simultaneous movements in
opposite directions. The middle part of the nar
rowing device may, during narrowing or widen
ing, be swung inwardly into the operative position 5
for e?ecting patternings, may, however, also be '
swung outwardly into an inoperative position.

The direction of movement of the middle part 6
is controlled by the movement of the lateral part
l5 of the narrowing device located at theright
hand side.

upwardly into the inoperative position. The two
intermediate members 44, 45 of the slide 21 are
withdrawn, so that the stop 26 of this slide is
shifted to the left. In the slide 29 both the inter
mediate members 86, 61 are brought in front of
the rod 54, so that the stop 28 of the slide 29 is
shifted to the right. Hereby the lateral parts l5
and I8 of the narrowing device are shifted against
