Our present invention relates to sulphonium
bases.
U. S. Patent No. 2,040,061 relates to quater
nary ammonium compounds derived by far
5 reaching alkylation from mixtures of polymeric
ethylenepolyamines, which compositions are
characterized by the property, on after-treat
ment therewith of dyeings on cellulose materials
by means of substantive dyestuffs, of substan
10 tially improving the fastness of such dyeings to
water, perspiration, boiling acids and washing.
Our present invention relates to the corre
sponding sulphonium bases derived from ali
phatic polysulphide compounds by far-reaching
alkylation being therefor aliphatic bases contain
ing a plurality of sulphonium groups, which
products are likewise characterized by the prop
erty, on after-treatment therewith of dyeings on
cellulose material by means of substantive dye
stuffs, of substantially improving the fastness of
20 such dyeings to Water, perspiration, boiling acids
and washing.
In order to further illustrate our invention,
the following example is given, the parts being
by weight and all temperatures in centigrade
degrees. We wish it, however, to be understood
that our invention is not limited to the particular
products nor reaction conditions mentioned
therein.

Example
To 129 parts of oc-diChlOl‘OhYdI'iIlG 480 parts
of an aqueous solution of sodium sulphide of 50%
strength are added. The mixture is held for 6
to 7 hours on a boiling water bath. When cool an
35 oily viscous product is obtained insoluble in water
and the usual organic solvents and consisting of
a mixture of high molecular weight aliphatic
sulphurized compounds. 40 parts thereof are
mixed with 80 parts of dimethyl-sulphate and
the mixture is heated for 8 to 10 hours at 100 to
110° C. Then the excess of dimethylsulphate
is extracted by means of organic solvents.
The water soluble sulphonium base thus ob
tained is a slightly colored viscous oil and is ca
pable of improving the fastness to washing of
dyeings obtained by means of substantive dye 10
stuffs on cellulose material.
We claim:
1. sulphonium bases obtained by acting with
sodium sulphide on a chlorohydrine and treating
the mixture of high molecular aliphatic sulphur
ized compounds thus obtained with dimethylsul
phate, being slightly colored viscous oils and be
ing characterized by the property on after-treat

ment therewith of dyeings on cellulose material
by means of substantive dyestu?s, of substan
tially improving the fastness of such dyeings to 20
Water, perspiration, boiling acids and washing.
2. A sulphonium base obtained by acting with
sodium sulphide on a-dichlorohydrine and treat
ing the mixture of high molecular aliphatic sul
phurized compounds thus obtained with dimeth 25
ylsulphate, which product is a slightly colored
viscous oil and is characterized by the property,
on after-treatment therewith of dyeings on cel
lulose material by means of substantive dyestuffs,
of substantially improving the fastness of such 30
dyeings to water, perspiration, boiling acids and
