SURFBOARD AND PROPELLING MEANS
THEREFOR
‘
James Negri, Hoboken, N. J.
Application November 9, 1937, Serial No. 173,666
3 Claims.
This invention relates broadly to surfboards
and similar crafts, and an object of the invention
is to provide improved means for use in conjunc
tion with a surfboard or like craft for propelling
5 the same.
The invention together with its objects and ad
vantages will be best understood from a study of
the following description taken in connection
with the accompanying drawings wherein:—
10
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a surf
board embodying the features of the present in
Vention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a propelling
15 member.
'
Referring to the drawings by reference‘ nu
merals it will be seen that 5 indicates an oblong
?at board which may be constructed from any
suitable material and may be referred to as a
20 surfboard.
In accordance with the present invention there
is provided adjacent the forward end of the
board 5 and in close parallel relation to the lon
gitudinal edges of the board 5 elongated slots 6
25 to accommodate propulsion elements 1.
Each of the propulsion elements 1 comprises
a slide 8 in the form of a ?at bar provided on
the underside thereof with a longitudinal rib 9
which is accommodated in a slot 6.
‘>0
Suitably mounted on the rib 9 at opposite sides
of the latter and adjacent the forward end of the
rib are rollers it! which ride on the top surface
of the board 5.
Adjacent the forward end thereof the slide 8
35 is provided with ?anges or lugs H between which
is supported a suitable hand grip l2.
Depending from the slide 53 and extending
through the slide and its rib 9 is a rod H which
serves as a pivot for a pair of blades or paddles
40 Ill-l4.
The paddles or blades M are formed of any
suitable material and at their upper and lower
edges have secured by screws or other fasten
ing elements it thereto hinge plates is which
45 at one end are provided with eyes H to accommo
date the hinge rod l3.
The rod I3 is in the form of a bolt, inverted
and. having its upper threaded end extending
through the rib 9 and slide 8 and equipped with a
50 nut l8.
Secured to one side of the rod l3 as at I9 is
a stop block 20 against which the blade paddles
(Cl. 9--18)
l4 abut when said blades are in a propelling
position which is in the extended position shown
in Figure 3.
It will thus be seen that in using the surfboard
5 equipped with the propelling devices l the user 5
lies prone on the board 5 as shown in Figure 1
and grips in each hand thereof the handles l2
of the slides 8. Obviously by pulling on the
slides 8 the latter will be caused to move rear
Wardly and the blades H5 in the extended posi- 10
tion shown in Figure 3 will present the maximum
surface thereof against the water to propel the
surfboard forwardly. On the return stroke the
blades will close, as is thought to be apparent,
and will then offer minimum resistance in the 15
passage of the device through the water.
It will thus be seen that the surfboard can be
propelled by the action of the arms reciprocating
the slides 8, the blades offering the maximum sur
face to the water on the propelling stroke and 20
feathering or closing on the return stroke.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the
construction, utility and advantages of an inven
tion of this character will be had without a more
detailed description.
Having thus described the invention What is
claimed as new is:-—
1. A surfboard, a pair of slides mounted on
said surfboard, said surfboard being provided with
longitudinal slots, rods depending from said slides 30
and extending through said slots, and a pair of
blades hinged to the lower end of each of said
rods.
2. A surfboard, a pair of slides mounted on
said surfboard, said surfboard being provided 35
with longitudinal slots, rods depending from said
slides and extending through said slots, and a
pair of blades hinged to the lower end of each
of said rods, stops provided on said rods to be
engaged by said blades during the propelling 40
stroke of the slides.
3. A surfboard, a pair of slides mounted on
said surfboard, said surfboard being provided
with longitudinal slots, rods depending from said
slides and extending through said slots, and a 45
pair of blades hinged to the lower end of each
of said rods, stops provided on said rods to be
engaged by said blades during the propelling
stroke of the slides, and each of said slides be
ing provided with a hand grip.
