This invention relates to percussive tools or
drilling machines of the type commonly known as
stopersywherein the pressure ?uid-operated drill
is gradually fed to its work by a feed cylinder em
ployed in conjunction with the drill and usu
ally in substantial alignment therewith, and par
ticularly to tools of this type which embody a
tube through which ?uid passes for cleaning the
drill holes.

The drilling machine includes a tube I I through
which cleansing ?uid, either water or air under 15
pressure, is delivered‘ through the drill steel 2
for the purpose of cleaning the drill hole. The
tube II is held in place in the valve block 5 by
a removable nut I2 and its companion structure,
as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The 20

With these and other objects in view, as may

Referring more particularly to the drawings,
the improved drilling mechanism or percussive
tool includes the hammer engine I of any ap
proved type, which operates the drill steel 2 for
drilling, and the feed mechanism 3 which oper
ates to feed the drill steel 2 and the entire drill
ing machine to its Work.
The hammer engine I may be of any approved
construction including the cylinder 4 which is
connected in any suitable manner to the valve
block 5. The valve block 5 carries a throttle
55 valve 6 which controls the feeding of the oper
surface of the valve block 5 and the upper sur
face of the head I8 of the feed cylinder ‘I. The 40
two sections of the drilling machine are swing
ably connected by means of an eye bolt 2!! which
is in turn swlngably mounted upon a cross bolt
2| carried by suitable ears or bosses 22 formed '
on the valve block 5. A substantial U-shaped
bracket 23 is formed on the head I8 of the cyl
inder ‘I and its upstanding arms 24 are provided
with substantially oval-shaped slots 25 through
which the bolt 2| extends, thus providing a ?rm 50
solid swingable connection between the ham
mer engine I and the feeding mechanism 3 so
that the hammer engine may be swung into an
open position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4.

nut l2 and consequently ready and easy removal
of the tube H either for repair or replacement.
A locking bolt 26 is pivotally connected by
means of its eye 21 and a suitable bolt or pin 28
to ears 29 formed on the feed cylinder head 18.
The locking bolt 26 swings between suitable lock
ing ears30 formed on the valve block 5 and is
clamped tightly in place for locking the sections
of the tool tightly together by means of the nut
10 3| which is threaded on the locking nut 26 and
tightly clamps against the upper sides of the
ears 30.
The U-shaped bracket 23, ears 22 and the ears
30, and the locking nut 26 are all arranged so
15 that when the locking nut is in looking position
the joint between the undersurface of the valve
block 5 and the upper surface of the feed cylin
der head l3 will be tight and the passages l6 and
I‘! in proper registration for delivering pressure

What is claimed is:
1. In a percussive tool, in combination, a valve
block, a cylinder connected to the valve block, .a
30 cleansing ?uid-conducting tube detachably en
gaging the valve block and extending into said
cylinder, a feed cylinder, a head on said feed
cylinder, a substantially U-shaped bracket car
ried by said head, a pivoting bolt carried by said
valve block and extending through the legs of
said U-shaped bracket, an eye bolt rigidly carried
by said bracket and having its eye engaged by
said pivoting bolt, the legs of said U-shaped
bracket provided with elongated openings to
permit lateral movement of the pivoting bolt 10
relative to the bracket.
2. In a percussive tool, in combination, a. valve
block, a cylinder connected to the valve block,
a cleansing fluid-conducting tube detachably en
gaging the valve block and extending into said 15
cylinder, a feed cylinder, 2, head on said feed
cylinder, a substantially U-shaped bracket car
ried by said head, a pivoting bolt carried by said
valve block and extending through the legs of
said U-shaped bracket, an eye bolt rigidly carried 20
by said bracket and having its eye engaged by
said pivoting bolt, the legs of said U-shaped
bracket provided with elongated openings to per
mit lateral movement of the pivoting bolt rela
tive to the bracket, and a locking bolt swingably 25
carried by the feed cylinder and engaging the
valve block to lock the valve block and feed cyl
inder in working position.
