TYPEWR-ITING MACHINE
Jesse A. B. Smith, Stamford, Conn, assignor to
‘Underwood Elliott Fisher Company. New York,
N. Y., a corporation of Delaware
Application October 8, 1936, Serial No. 104,566
11 Claims. (01. 19’i—186)
This ‘invention relates to typewriters, and more

space lever 26, a reciprocating ‘carriage 21, and
a platen 28. The carriage 2‘l‘is mounted in any
particularly to masks for portable typewriters.
The improved mask has a single one-piece
cover to overlie both ribbon spools and a top
5 plate projecting forwardly between the sides of
the mask, and affording clearance for the type
bars, and conducing to ornamental appearance.
Brackets are slidably mounted on the side walls
of ‘the mask, and ?xed to the sidewalls of the
well~known manner and has pivotally fastened
thereon the line-space lever 26 by
screw 29.

side wall portions 32 and 33 of the cover 30,
and slidably mounted by means of screws 43

may be moved forward to expose the ribbon
spools, and also the type-bars, for inspection and
cleaning.

The top cover of the mask does not interfere
15 with movement of the carriage, even when drawn
forwardly to permit ribbon changes, and type
cleaning or adjustment.
The forward extension of the cover projects
beyond its sides, in the same plane as the sloping
20 front section of the sides of the’mask, affording
clearance for the type-bars and improving the
appearance. It will not interfere with carriage
manipulation either in operating or cleaning po
sitions.

Having thus described my inventio n, I claim:
it comprises a lower portion which enoases a

together in any conventional manner, which
forms no part of the invention. The side wall of
mask it has a concave portion il in the upper
edge of the wall for the passage of the carriage
of the typewriting machine. Typewriter parts,
conventional with Underwood portable machines,

and front of the frame, a top covering the rib
boil-spools, and cut away in the central portion
to clear the type-bars, said top having down
wardly-extending sides corresponding with the

downwardly slanting extension from said top,
‘co-operating with the lower mask-portion to
mask the front of said frame, and means slidably
