GARTER CONSTRUCTION
Rayna Karger, Highland Park, Ill.
Application July 6, 1937, Serial No. 151,984
4 Claims. (01. 241—2)
My invention relates to a garter construction.
More speci?cally, it relates to a garter construc
tion especially adapted for use with a garter belt,
girdle, corset, foundation garment, or the like.
In such constructions, it has. been found that the
side pull on the elastic attached to the girdle is
apt to stretch the girdle out of shape, causing it
to creep or be displaced, and also exerts an undue
strain on the connection between the elastic and
10 girdle at a point adjacent the edge of the elastic.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide
an improved garter construction which will lessen
the strain on the hose, due to bending movement
of the wearer, and will thus prevent tears and
15 runs in the hose.
A further object of my invention is to provide
an improved garter construction which will mini
mize or do away with the above disadvantages.
A further objection to the present garter con
20 structions of the type pointed out above has been
that they have a tendency to cause a twisting of
the hose, getting the seam out of alignment. A
further object of my invention is to provide an
improved garter construction which will lessen
25 the tendency to twist the seam of the hose out of
alignment.
Further objects and advantages of. the inven
tion will be apparent from the description and
claims.
In the drawing, in which an embodiment of my
30
invention is shown,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a girdle
garter construction;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view showing the con-‘
nection between the elastic and girdle;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3—-3 of Fig. 2;
and
v
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4—4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the con
40 struction shown comprises a girdle l, to which
are attached a number of elastic strips 2, having
provisions at their lower ends for securing them
to the upper edge of the stocking. The girdle I
may be of any usual or suitable construction, that
45 shown comprising a light fabric having provisions
at 3 for securing the ends together to form a
girdle. The elastic strips 2 may be of any usual
or suitable construction comprising an elastic
tape having a clasp 4 at its lower end for securing
50 it to the upper edge of the stocking and having a
slip buckle construction 5 for adjusting the length
of the tape. For connecting the upper end of the
elastic tape to the girdle, I provide a woven fabric
tab 6 secured at its upper edge to the girdle and
55 at its lower edge to the elastic tape. The upper
edge of the tab, which is secured to the girdle I, is
materially wider than the lower edge of the tab
which is secured to- the tape 2. The tab 6 has
extensible and contractible strands 1 extending
between the girdle and tape, the edges of the tab
between the girdle and tape being folded over and O!
the raw edges being stitched to the body of the
tab by zigzag, longitudinally-extensible stitching
8, whereby, when the elastic tape 2 is stretched in
a somewhat lateral direction, as indicated in
dotted lines in Fig. 1, one edge of the tab may be
stretched more than the other to prevent undue
distortion or displacement of the girdle. I have
also found that less strain is exerted on the girdle
and that the garter is more easily adjusted to the
0
5
movements of, the wearer if the elastic strands ‘l
of the tab are made more elastic than is the
elastic tape.
The upper edge of the connecting tab may be
secured to the lower edge of the girdle by means
of stitching 9, and the lower edge of theelastic 2'0
tab may be secured to the upper edge of the
elastic tape by stitching [0.
Further modi?cations will be apparent to those
skilled in the art and it is desired, therefore, that
the invention be limited only by the prior art and
the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a girdle or the like,
means for supporting a stocking from the girdle
comprising an elastic extensible and contractible
tape, means at the lower end of the tape for se
curing a stocking thereto, and means for securing
the upper end of. the tape to said girdle comprising a woven fabric tab secured at its upper edge
to said girdle and at its lower edge to said tape,
the upper edge of the tab which is secured to the
5
girdle being materially wider than the width of
the tape, said tab having extensible and con
tractible strands extending between said girdle
and tape, the edges of the tab between the girdle
and tape being folded over and the raw edges
being stitched to the body of the tab by longitudi
nally extensible zigzag stitching whereby, in 45
stretching, one edge of the tab may be stretched
more than the other to prevent undue distortion
and displacement of the girdle, the elastic tab
being more elastic and more easily stretched than
the elastic tape.

tape, means at the lower end of the tape for se
curing a stocking thereto, and means for securing 55
