‘Application July 20, 1937, Serial No. 154,642
2 Claims. (Cl. 132-—13)
This invention relates to a fountain comb, de
the size of the opening admitting air to the head
signed for containing hair tonic, liquid hair ‘of
the comb, may be regulated to control'the pas
dressing or medicine for the treatment of the sage of material from the comb, by varying the

quantity of air entering the hollow head of the
comb.
The primary object of the invention is to pro

head or container for containing the liquid‘ to be

munication between the hollow portion of the
comb and the atmosphere, the openings ll being
disposed between the teeth 6 of the comb, as 10

used in treating the hair or scalp, there being
provided openings for allowing the material to
no pass from the hollow head, to be distributed by
the teeth of the comb.
An important objectof the invention is to pro
vide a“ device of this character having means
whereby the discharge of the material used in the
[5 comb, may be regulated, so that the comb may
be used in applying material of various consist
Lugs indicated by the reference character I!
are formed within the hollow portion of the
head of the comb, and are formed with threaded
openings to receive‘ the threaded ends of the 15
guide pins l3, which are shown as positioned
therein. The reference character l4 designates a
plate, which is of a length adapted to extend
encies.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
which will appear as the description proceeds,
0 the invention resides in the combination and ar
rangement of parts and in the details of con
throughout substantially the entire length of the
hollow portion of the head of the comb, the plate 20
being formed with openings to accommodate the
pins i3 whereby the plate M will be guided in its
vertical movement.

by the reference character I 5, the member being 25
constructed preferably of rubber so that when
the member i5 is moved downwardly against the
bottom of the hollow portion of the head of the
comb, the openings ii will be closed, so that
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a comb con
9 structed in accordance with the invention, a por
the material contained in the hollow portion of 30
the‘ head of the comb will be held against dis
tion thereof being shown in section, illustrating
the hollow head or chamber for containing the
charging through the openings H.
Coiled springs indicated by the reference char
material fed by the comb. '
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2
Ii of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmental plan view of the comb.
Figure 4 is a fragmental plan view of the comb,
the regulating plug thereof having been removed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the refer
ence character 5 designates the head of the comb,
and the reference character 6 designates the teeth
thereof.
‘
As clearly shown by the drawing, the head of
the comb is hollow, throughout a portion of its
length, and is provided with an opening in ‘which
the headed screw 1 extends, the head of the
screw, which is indicated by the reference char
acter 8, being provided with an opening 9, adapt
ed to register with the curved opening l0 formed
in the bottom of the recessed portion of the head,
in which the head 8 of the screw, normally lies.
The opening I0, is of a construction, wide at one
end and tapered towards the opposite end, so
that when the head 8 is rotated to bring the open
ing 9 thereof into registry with the opening l0,
acter I6 surround the enlargement i2, and con
tact with the lower surface of the plate it, nor 35
mally urging the plate and member I5 upwardly.
‘
The screw 7, is of a length to contact with
the plate M, to adjust the plate and member l5,
with respect to the openings H to regulate the
quantity of material passing from the opening.
40
In the use of the device, the member if» is ad
justed so that the material contained in the hol
low portion of the comb may pass through the
openings H, and may be distributed over the
scalp of the head under treatment. The comb 45
may now be reversed and the teeth at the oppo
site end of the comb may be used in combing the
hair to spread the material.
It might be further stated that the plug 8 is
formed with a ‘slot H for the reception of a coin 50
or tool by means of which the plug may be ro
tated in a manner as described.
Openings [8 are formed in the member ii, the
openings l8 registering with certain of the open
ings H, so that a wire or similar device may be
2

inserted into the openings l8 moving the member
I! awayfrom the openings II, should the mem
ber l5 adhere to the bottom of the hollow portion
of the comb.
Having thus described the invention, what is
claimed is:
1. A fountain comb comprising a head having
a hollow portion, teeth extending from the head,
said head having discharge openings through
10 which material passes from the hollow head, a
movable member in the hollow portion of the
head and adapted to move to close the discharge
openings, said head having an opening through
which air passes to the hollow head displacing
liquid discharged from the hollow head, a headed
15
screw having an opening registering with the
last mentioned opening and adapted to regulate
the size of the air inlet openings, controlling the
passage of material from the hollow portion of the
20 head, and said screw adapted to move the mov
able member to a. position closing the ‘discharge
openings.
2. A fountain comb comprising a head having a
hollow portion, teeth extending from the head,
said head having openings through which ma
terial passes from the hollow head, a member
in the hollow head and adapted to
' operating
move to close the openings, said member adapted
to be adjusted with respect to the openings, adapt
ing the comb for use in distributing material of
various consistencies, means for normally urging
the member away from the openings whereby
material may pass from the hollow head, said
head having an opening admitting air to the
hollow portion thereof, a member having an
opening adapted to register with the latter open
ing whereby air is admitted to the hollow head,
controlling the ?ow of material from the head.
