This invention relates to typing or manifolding
machines and the like, and particularly, to de
vices for making supplemental copies of the
record simultaneously with the making of the
g, usual copies.
'
One object of this invention is to providev a
typing or similar printing machine having means
for producing additional copies of the records at
the same time that the regular copies are made.
Another object is to provide a typing or similar
it)
printing machine in which a record strip moves

siring this information. For example, it is often
advisable to obtain production or shipping rec
ords, such as the name and address of the cus
tomer, the quantity and nature of the goods or
dered, the time of delivery and such credit in- 5
formation as may be necessary. These data are
recorded in a small area on the regular carbon
sheets and simultaneously recorded upon the sup
plemental record strip, which moves transversely
thereto. The supplemental record strips may be m
torn o? from time to time,'and the information
thereon transferred to the person requiring it
without the necessity of sending that person com
transversely to the sheets employed in making
»the regular copies, this record strip being inter
posed between the type bars and the regular ‘ plete copies of the entire forms made by the ma- ~
copies.
,
'
Another object is to provide means for making
an additional copy of records produced in a
machine oi the type described, wherein the ma
chine itself moves over a work bed containing the
work sheets, the feeding of the strips for the sup
plemental record being linked up with and syn
chronized with the mechanism oi‘ the typing or
' manlfolding machine.
>
Another object is to provide mechanism of the
type previously described for making an addi~
tional copy or" records produced in typing or
manlfolding machines, such apparatus being ca
pable of being’ employed in‘ connection with ma
30
chines having’ type bars which engage the record
sheets beneath the platen.
This application is a division of my copending
application, Ser. No. 62,463, ?led February 5,
1936.
'
The drawing shows an elevation, partly in cross
section and‘ partly broken away, of a. machine
capable of being moved bodily to and fro over
chine as a whole.

.The feeding mechanism for the supplemental. '
copy strips is operatively connected to the type
writer mechanism in such a manner that the two
machines are synchronized to work in unison.
In a preferred embodiment the feeding mecha 20
nism is operated by devices actuated by the mo
tion of the platen of the machine. _
In the type of machine shown in the drawing
the‘ entire typing assembly is moved to and fro
over the work. The record sheets ii and inter 25
leaved carbon sheets 6 are shown mounted upon
a horizontal bed Ill, having rails it upon which
a framework it is movably supported, as by the
rollers l3. Arranged to move longitudinally along
the framework it‘ and between the rollers it‘, is
the typing machine, generally designated M, and ‘
having keys, l5 which byv suitable mechanism
transmit their motion to the type levers iii, op
erating the downwardly-moving type faces l'i.
Mounted on the machine Ml are pack holders’
l8 and ill, respectively, the former being adapted
the work, and having means for making a sup
to hold the paper pack being withdrawn and the -

with shafts 2i! and it, on which are mounted

I General’ construction
In general, the apparatus of my invention
. makes use of a strip of material, either having
a carbon coating on the back thereof, or having
ribbon spools 22 and 23, adapted to hold a ribbon
M. The assembly, comprising the record strip
3 and the carbon strip 5i, is threaded over the
guide roller 25, between the rollers as and 21, and
around the guide roller 28 into the space between
a. separate carbon strip associated therewith, the
assembly‘ being made to traverse the typing ma . the ribbon at and the record sheets 5 and 6 on
chine in a direction transverse to the direction the bed ill. Beyond these the record strip 3 and
of motion between the typewriter and the sheets carbon strip ll continue around the guide roller
of paper employed for making the regular copies. 29, and between the feed rollers 30 and 3|.
The rollers 26, 21,30 and Bi are mounted upon
The supplemental copy strips are adapted to

copies, these supplemental copy strips containing shafts 3d and 35 are geared together, in a man

The frame 92 is provided with a rack 6!, which
meshes with the corresponding teeth of a, gear
42, mounted upon the shaft ‘it supported by the
bracket M on the typing machine it.
The
gear t2 drives a ratchet 65 through a pawl

strip after the record has been inscribed there
on, and means responsive to the motion of said 10
the sprocket ill’. The latter drives the sprocket
ll upon the feed roller shaft so through the
intermediate agency oi’ the sprocket chain $8.
In the operation of the apparatus shown in the
10
drawing the machine it moves bodily to‘ the
right, as the operator‘ operates the keys it.
When this occurs, the motion of the machine
M causes the rotation of the gear 32 by its en
15 gagement with the rack it upon the frame l2,
and the sprockets ‘it and M ,cause the conse
quent rotation of the feed rollers 30 and Si
so that the assembly comprising‘ the supple
' mental record strip 8 and the carbon strip 6
- 20 is fed through the machine, past the type faces.
I1 and out into the receiving holder It. By se
lecting the proper ratios in the various gears
and sprockets it will be seen that the supple
mental record strip 3 and its accompanying car
25 bon strip It can be fed at an equal speed but
opposite direction of the machine it, so that
during the typing operation the strips 3 and 8
remain stationary relatively to the record
sheets t.

a typing machine movable on said guides rela

~
When the machine it is retracted, however,
in order to begin typing a new line, the pawl
66 slips over the ratchet 656, causing the feed
rollers 3t and 3! to become temporarily inac
tive, During the retraction of the machine it,

unit with the machine M,‘ hence, travel relatively
