This invention relates to sheet metal shears.
An object of this invention is to provide shears
of the character described for cutting tin or the
like sheet metal, and which shall be so constructed
5 as to permit the severed metal to pass over the
lower jaw of the shears, and under the operator’s
hand without the hazard of injury to the hands.
A further object of this invention is to provide

Other objects of this invention will in part be

The invention accordingly consists in the fea
tures of construction, combinations of elements,
and arrangement of parts which will be exempli
?ed in the construction hereinafter described,
20 and of which the scope of application will be in
dicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is
shown one of the various possible illustrative
embodiments of this invention,

Referring now in detail to the drawing, l0
designates a sheet metal shear embodying the in
vention, and comprising a pair of interpivoted
members I! and I2, pivoted together on a bolt
35 I3. The member l2 has ahorizontal handle por
tion l5 provided with the usual loop l6 at the
rear end thereof. Extending from the front end
of the handle [5 is a downwardly curved portion
-|'|, from which there extends a forwardly pro
40 jecting jaw I8 carrying the upper cutting blade
of the shears.
The jaw l8 has a portion l9
formed on one side thereof with a counter-sunk
cylindrical socket 20. Said portion l9 has an
opening 2| at the axis of the counter-sunk open
45 ing 20 through which the bolt l3 passes. The
jaw l8 furthermore comprises a front cutting
blade portion 23 having a lower shearing edge
25. Said portion 23 has a part cylindrical sur
face 26 forming a continuation of the cylindrical
50 inner surface of the counter-sunk opening 20.
At one end of the surface 26 is a radial shoulder
21 for the purpose hereinafter appearing, and
located at the bottom of the jaw I8. At the other
end of the surface 26 is a radial shoulder 28.

ing 36. The jaw 33 furthermore comprises a
portion 31 having a. forwardly projecting cutting
blade 38 formed with an upper shearing edge 39.
Said portion 31 has a substantially ?at horizontal 15

openings 2|, 3B. Said surface 4|] has a trans
verse groove 4| and the portion 32, has a counter
sunk opening 39 co-axial with the opening 36,
to receive the head |3a of the bolt 13.

slide within the groove 4|.
A nut 45 may be screwed to the‘ outer end of
the bolt I3. The portion 32 of the member II]
has a part-cylindrical surface 41 forming a con
tinuation of the cylindrical surface of boss 35
and received within the part-cylindrical surface
26 of the jaw I8. At one‘ end of the surface 41
is a radial shoulder 50 opposed to shoulder 21.
At the other end of surface 41 is shoulder 41a
adapted to cooperate with shoulder 28 to limit
opening movement of the shears.
It will now be understood that as sheet metal
is being sheared, the metal on one side of the cut
may pass over the surface 40 of the lower jaw 33,
and pass beneath the handles I5, 30, so as not
to contact the hands of the operator, thus ob
viating the likelihood of injury to the operator’s
hand.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a de
vice in which the several objects of this inven
tion are achieved, and which is Well adapted to
meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be
made of the above invention, and as various
changes might be made in the embodiment above
set forth, it is to be understood that all matter
herein set forth or shown in the accompanying ‘
drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and
not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention I claim
as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
Shears comprising a pair of interpivoted mem
bers having handles, and jaws offset from said
handles and provided with shearing edges, one of 55

said jaw having a cylindrical counter-sunk
opening partially extending therethrough form
ing a bearing surface having a base, the second
jaw being formed with a cylindrical boss received

against said base, said ?rst jaw further having
an offset portion formed with a part-cylindrical
surface forming a continuation of the cylindrical
surface of said counter-sunk opening, and. being
10 formed with a radial shoulder on one end of said
part-cylindrical surface, the second jaw having
a curved portion engaging said part-cylindrical
surface, and a shoulder at the end of said curved
portion adapted to contact said ?rst shoulder to
limit relative angular movement of said mem
bers, said jaws having co-axial through openings
at the axes of said cylindrical opening and cylin
drical boss, 2. bolt within said through openings, u
one of said jaws being counter-sunk to receive
the head of said bolt, said last mentioned jaw
having an offset formed with a surface having a
groove co-axial with said last mentioned counter
sink to receive the head of said bolt, upon in 10
serting said bolt into the through opening of said
Jaw.
