Application October 12, 1936, Serial No. 105,247
10 Claims. (Cl. 30-43)
My invention relates to a shaver to take the
place of a razor for shaving hair, and the objects
of my invention are:
First, to provide a rotary blade shaver which
5 is operated by a pre-wound spring;
Second, to provide a .shaver of this class with
governor means for regulating speed of the shav
ing blade;
10
Third, to provide brake means in connection
with the governor for holding the shaving blade
against rotation;
Fourth, to provide a shaver of this class in
which the hairs may be e?iciently removed with
out the use of lather;
_ '
Fifth, to provide a shaver of this class which is
manually operated and propelled;
Sixth, to provide a shaver of this class within
which the shaved hairs may be retained, and
from within which said hairs may be readily
20
removed;
Seventh, to provide a shaver of this class
which is very simple of construction and oper
ation, e?icient, durable, and which will not

threaded portion 2a of cap 2 is of greater inter
nal diameter than the rest of said cap 2. At
211 the cap 2 is reduced in internal diameter so
as to provide a- shoulder to secure partition 6 5
rigidly in position between said shoulder and
lugs lb when the cap member 2 is screwed onto
threads la. This cap member 2 is provided with
a relatively thin end covering portion 20 which
is provided with a plurality of outwardly curved 10
openings 2d as shown best in Figs. 3 and 4 of
the drawing. Mounted against this inner sur
face and adapted to revolve against the inner
surface of the. member 20 is a revoluble blade 4
which is made with a plurality of extended 15
blade portions 411.
In this case I have shown
four which are provided with sharpened edges
which are adapted to engage hair which extends
through the slots 2d in the end member 2 and
shear the same with the revolution of the blade 20
4. This blade I is secured on the end of the
shaft 5 which is the drive shaft for the blade 4
by means of screw threads Ad. This shaft 5 is
enlarged at 50 for forming a journal within a
'central opening 6a in the partition and journal 25
6. The shaft 5 is provided with a square portion

shaft 5 is revolubly mounted in this hub portion
Ila so that the spring I 0 may be wound around
the shaft 5.
The ratchet wheel H is supported on the in
side of the cap 3 which is screw-threaded on
the threads lb on the tubular casing I. This
7 cap 3 is provided with a central opening 3a
which receives the extended end of a reduced
portion lib of the ratchet wheel II. This re

end He and on which is secured the winding
plurality of radiating shearing members revolu
bly mounted against the inside of said end, a
torsion spring in connection with said rotor
blade for tending to turn the same, and means
extending outwardly of said casing for winding
said spring relatively to said blade.

Mounted for engagement with the ratchet
wheel II are a plurality of ratchet pawls I!
which are adapted to engage the ratchet teeth
llc on the ratchet wheel ll, ‘thus providing
ratchet means for holding the spring in certain
20 relation with the shaft so that it may be wound
as desired. While winding the spring by means
of the key I 3, the disk 1 is held by the shifting
of the latch 8 against said disk forming a brake
against the movement of the shaft.
25. Around the exterior of the cap member 2 and
shiftably positioned within groove 2e is a slip
ring 2!. The cap member 2 is provided with
four circular openings and the slip ring 2}’ is
also provided with four conforming circular open
tending outwardly of said casing for winding
said spring relatively to said blade, and governor
and adjustable brake means in connection with
said spring and said blade.

curved slots at one end, a shaving blade with 20
a plurality of radiating shearing members revolu

torsion spring in connection with said rotor blade
for tending to. turn the same, means extending
outwardly of said casing for winding said spring 25
relatively to said blade, governor and adjust
able brake means in connection with said spring
and said blade, and ratchet and pawl means in_
operative connection with said spring.

The operation of my shaver is as follows: The
shaver is prepared for operation by winding the
spring l0 around the shaft 5 by turning the key
40 l3 until the spring J0 is tightly wound, the latch
8 being shifted against the disk 1 to prevent the
shaft from turning. Then the latch 8 is shifted
a certain predetermined distance from the disk
1 and the shaft 5 is revolved by the spring 10
45 carrying with it the blade 4. The outer surface
of the member 2 is placed against the surface to
be shaved and the hairs extend through the slots
2d and are sheared by the rotating blades 4a.
The speed of the rotating blades is regulated by
the governor drawing the disk ‘I against the latch
8.
The sheared hairs will go into the cap mem
ber 2 between the partition 6 and the blade 4
and may be removed from time to time by means
of slip ring 2)‘.
