. 'z claims." (ci. 22a-_44)
My invention relates to a container, particu- ~ which is marked ci! by a score line 1.
larly to a container made ofiiber-'boardI or other”
bendable material and especially adapted for use
in shipping bottled products.
-
The principal object of the invention is a container ' which utilizes comparatively light ma
terial, but which is so constructed as to have the
necessary strength and rigidity. Another object
is to protect the upper edges oi' the end walls of
the container. Other objects and advantages
10
will appear hereinafter.
‘
The invention consists principally in the con
struction of the end wall and cover members
‘ whereby the desiredf'strength and rigidity are
obtained., The invention further consists in the
container and in the parts .and combinations and
arrangements of parts hereinatter described and
The endv
edges\9 of these ilaps 8 are continuations of
the score lines 4.
-
At each end of each side panel 2 is a ilap
of the same width as the bottom panel iiaps E 5
and marked oiî from its side panels by a score
line I0. The edge I I of each‘of said naps adja
cent to ~a bottom panel'ñap B is cut away along
a. line extending angularly from the corner of
the body panel and thence parallel with the 10
body panel score lines, so that these flaps I0 are
oi' reduced length to facilitate setting up the box. ,
The other edge I2 of each of said ñaps 9 is a
continuation of a score line 5.
Each cover panelI 3 has a score line I 3 extending 15
parallel tothe score lines 4 and 5, marking the
edge of a ñange I4 and with a second parallel
score line I5 marking oiî a iiange lining strip

Each end blank B comprises a body or end wall
portion 2| of the same width as the bottom 35
panel I and of the same height as the side panels
2, together with a flap 22 adapted to be bent
inwardly and downwardly fromV the upper edge K
of the-end wall in the ñnished box. The end wall
proper -2| and the end -wall flap 22 are divider'
by a wide or double score line _29, constituting a 40
hinge connection between the end wall and its
flap, as hereinafter described.
v
'
.
` Each end wall 2| is provided with a horizontally .
In Fig. 1 is illustrated a body'blank'Al which

is preferably made of fiber-«boardbr the'like and said nenehand
being preferamy utilized in strengtnen- 45
is divided up into .a bottom panel I,' two side „
panels 2 and two cover panels 9, one at each end ing the end wall as is hereinafter described.
The body portion 2| of each end blank is Vpro

of the container. The division or joint between vided with a vertically disposed slot 26 in its

joint between each side panel 2-and its cover in making the hand hole. The hinge portion 29
is provided with a slot 21 in continuation of said.y
panel 3 is formed by similar score lines Il.
At each en_d of the bottom panel I' is a iiap 9 -,slot 26 which> flares from the endfof said slot ß ~

2. An lend wall blank for a container of the
26 to about the middle of the hinge portion 23
and then extends with its walls parallel to the kind described comprising a body portion having
»walls of said main slot. A slot 28 in the end - a slot in its upper edge, a marginal iiap extend
ing along said upper edge and a wide scored por
wall flap 22-is a continuation of the wide por
tion of said slot 21, the depth of said slot 28 being tion between said body and said flap, said scored Cà
‘somewhat greater than the depth of the slot 26 > portion and said strip having a slot flaring from
in the end proper 2|.
In the assembled box. the lower edges of the
end walls 2| rest on the ends of the bottom panel
10 I and against the ends of the inner faces of the
side panels 2, the bottom panel flap 6 and the
side panel flaps 9 being folded over against the
end walls and secured thereto as by staples 29.
The strips 25 are placed against the inner faces
of the end walls 2| with their lower edges flush
with the upper edges of the hand holes 24 and
with their upper edges fiush with the bottoms
of the end wall slots 26. 'I'he end wall flaps 22
are bent inwardly and downwardly against the
end wall 2I and secured thereto as by staples 30,
one staple passing through each end wall 2I , strip
25 and end wall flap 22. The end wall ñap 22
may extend to about the mid-line of the hand
hole 24, in which case the lower edge of said ñap
25 is provided with a recess 3| to aline with the
upper portion of the hand hole.
The cover panel end flaps I1 and flanges I4
are turned downwardly, the tongues I8 of the
f_aps I1 being bent against the inner faces of
The flange lining strips I6
30 the cover flanges I4.
are then rebent upwardly and secured to the
flanges I4, as by staples 32, some staples extend
ing also through the tongues I8.
It will be noted that the cover panel flanges
35 I4 and lining strips I6 are shorter than the dis
the end of said first slot for some distance into
said scored portion and then extending with its
edges parallel to those of said first slot, the depth
of the portion of said slot in said fiap being
greater than the depth of said slot in said body
portion.
3. A container comprising side and end walls,
said end walls having inturned upper marginal
iiaps, said end walls having slots in their upper 15
edges and said inturned flaps having slots in line
`with said end wall slots but wider and deeper,
cover panels hinged to said side walls, side and
end >flanges on said cover panels, and tongues
carried by said end ñanges and secured against 20
the inner faces of said side fianges, said side
flanges extending beyond said inturned flaps of
said end walls but stopping short of said end
Walls, said tongues extending through said slots
and the edges of said side flanges'extending below 25
the bottoms of the end wall slots in the deeper
slots of said end wall ñaps.
4. A container comprising side and end walls,
said end walls having inturned upper marginal
naps, said end walls having slots in their upper 30
edges and said inturned iiaps having slots in line
with said end wall slots but wider and deeper, a
reinforcing strip interposed between each end wall
and its inturned strip with its upper edge flush
with the bottom of the slot in the end wall, cover
tance between the end walls proper 2 I, but slight
panels hinged to said side walls, side 'and end
- ly longer than the distance between the inturned
ñanges on said cover panels, and tongues carried
by said end flanges and secured against the inner
faces of said side flanges, said side flanges extend
end wall flaps 22 and that the scored portion I5
which is bent over the tongues I8 projects below
40 the level of the tongues.
Thus, the tongues only ' ing beyond said inturned ñaps of said end walls 40
extend into the narrow slots 26 of the end walls but stopping short of said end walls, said tongues
proper and the end portions of the flanges I4 and extending through said slots and the edges of said
flange lining strips I6 extendv into the wider slots
28 of the end wall flaps 22, the increased depth
45 of said slots of said end wall flaps accommodating
the depending end portions 33 of the cover ?anges
I4 and lining strips I6 and said depending por
tions 33 abutting against the strips 25, or against
the end walls 2|, if said strips be omitted as
50
shown in Fig. 12.
' _
The wide or double score line 23 of the end
wall 2I provides a wide ledge or seat for the cover
panels 3.
.
The above described container has important
55 advantages. 'I'he construction of the end walls
and cover panels permits an interlocking and
'bracing arrangement that greatly increases the
strength and rigidity of the box.v The upper
edges of the end walls are free 'from raw edges
60 which would deteriorate due to wear and mois
ture.
Obviously, numerous changes may be made
lwithout departing from the invention and I do
not wish to be limited to the precise construction
65
shown.
.
