This invention relates to automatic draft regu
lators for heating plants arranged _to automati
cally relieve excessive pressure that maybe de
veloped in the heating plant.
v
The obiect of my invention is to provide an
extremely simple and inexpensive draft regu
lator so arranged that it ‘will not only regulate
draft in the heating plant to which it is at
tached. but will also automatically relieve any
11) excess pressure suddenly developed in the heat
ing plant or chimney.
-
The accompanying drawing illustrates my in~
vention.
Figure 1 is a vertical side _view of my drai't
regulator shown partly in section and shown at
tached to a ?ue pipe which is normally con
nected to a heating furnace, not shown, said
?ue pipe also being connected to the chimney
or ?ue, which discharges the products of com
bustion from the furnace to the outside atmos
phere.
,
_
Figure 2 is a front view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a modi?ed arrangement of that
part shown in section in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral i
25
7 indicates a ?ue pipe which is normally connected
to ya heating iurnace not shown. and which is
also connected to the ?ue leading to the outside
atmosphere. The numeral 2 indicates a sheet
30 metal cylinder which has extended arms I, and
arranged to be attached to the, ?ue pipe. and
said ?ue pipe having an opening corresponding
to the cylinder 2, and registering with the open
' ing in cylinder 2.
The numeral 4 indicates a
cylindrical ring attached to the sheet metalcyl
inder 2, and arranged to carry the regulator
door 5 on a pivot bearing 0 secured to the door,
and having hearings in the ring I as shown in
Figure 2. The numeral ‘I indicates a lochng nut
40 device, operating in the slot I. for the adiust
ment of a counterbalance weight (not shown)
similar to that shown on Patent 1,809,005 to
It. A. Walker.
The numeral 0 indicates a , hinge member
45 which is pivoted on the pin II, which pin is
mounted on the projecting members ii‘, se
cured to the door I. The numeral‘il indicates
a felt cushion arranged between the hinge mem
beriandthedoorltoreducenoiseintheoper
ation of the device. The numeral II indicates a
?atspringwhichissecuredtothelowerpart
oitheringlbythescrew l‘l. Thespringll
is arranged to contact with the hinge member
on the inside ofthe door‘ I, the spring I! will
yieldandpermitthedooritoopeninareverse
position, and thereby relieve pressure in the ?ue
pipe I' and connectedrparts. As soon as pres
sure is relieved. the‘ door twill fall back to nor- 5
mal position. and the hinge 0 will swing out so
as to'pass easily over the end of the spring ll,
without o?ering any resistance to the door in
getting back to normal operating position. The
numeral It indicates a shield cover for the 10
spring I}. and serves no purpose other than to
cover the spring and prevent tampering there
with. The cover it is secured to the projecting
lugs II on the lower part ‘of the ring 5 by the
screws I1.
15
In Figure 3 I have shown a modi?ed yielding
arrangement. The weight II is pivoted at ll,
and said pivot is secured in the lower part of
theringi. Theweight lllsarrangedtocon
tact with the-hinge member I in exactly the 20
same way that the spring ll contacts‘ with the
hinge member 0. In the event that excess pres
sure is developed on the inside oi‘ the door 5, the
weight II will yield in the same general way
25
that the spring will yield as before described.
I claim:-
