VOICE COIL SUSPENSION

My invention relates to permanent dynamic preferably cemented or otherwise fastened to the
sound reproducers and more particularly to a
voice coil structure in the usual manner, and
voice coil suspension of the type permitting axial
preferably adjacent the rear thereof.

An object of the present invention is to provide
a novel voice coil suspension of simpli?ed con
struction but which is very ?exible and so de
10 signed as to facilitate the axial movement of the
voice coil under power impulses of low" magnitude.
A further object of the present invention is
to particularly improve the sound response of
a sound reproducer by providing a semi-elliptical
15 spider of relatively thin ?exible material ‘for
yieldingly supporting said voice coil.
For a more detailed understanding of my in
vention, reference may be had to the accompany
ing drawing which illustrates one form which
20 my invention may assume, and in which:

This semi-elliptical ?exible spider l9 includes
an anchor portion 2| provided with an opening 5
or hole 22 for attachment to the single stud 20.
Extending from the anchor portion 2| are two
diverging arms 23 which are very ?exible and
are each connected as at 24 to a voice coil sup
porting ring 25, this ring being glued or other- 10
wise cemented along its inside edge to the voice
coil structure.
It may be further noted that
these diverging arms 23 are preferably tapered _
to facilitate the ?exing of the arms for provid
ing a readily yieldable voice coil suspension.

A semi-elliptical spider voice coil suspension,
such as herein illustrated and described, pro
vides a very ?exible support for the voice coil,
and because of the single anchor portion pro
vided, it will be noted that it is possible to there- 20
by design and construct a very compact sound
reproducer, which is preferably adapted for
assembly in auto receiving sets. Furthermore,
Fig. 2 is a plan sectional view showing the im
25 proved voice coil suspension and taken sub
stantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the ?exible semi
elliptical spider voice coil suspension.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated
thereby facilitating more economical manufac
ture at a saving in both time and material.
Although I have illustrated but one form of
30 my invention in connection with a conventional

sound reproducer of the permanent dynamic type,
although it will be perfectly obvious that the
' present voice coil suspension is adapted to other
types of sound reproducers as Well. The pres
35 ent sound reproducer includes cone bracket ID
for supporting the cone II which is in turn se
cured to a voice coil structure I2. A pole plate
I3 supports the cone bracket and is provided
with an opening I 4 for providing an air gap in
40 cooperation with the pole piece I5 in which the
voice coil structure is operated and preferably
yieldingly supported for axial movement there
in. A permanent magnet I6 is incorporated in
the circuit for providing a magnetic ?eld across
45 the air gap between the pole plate and pole'piece.
The present invention relates more particu
larly to the means for suspending the voice coil
structure and it will be noted that I have prefer
ably provided 'a double voice coil suspension, the
50 front suspension comprising a. ?exible diaphragm
I l suitably carried by a bracket I8 fastened to the
pole plate I3. This voice coil is supported at the

and other related parts of the sound reproducer,
single application thereof, it will be apparent to
those skilled in the art to which my invention
pertains that various modi?cations and changes
may be made therein without departing from
the spirit of my invention or from the scope 35

What I claim as my invention is:
1. A single vibratory voice coil suspension for
a sound reproducer and providing a unitary sup
port serving as the sole supporting means for 40
one end of the voice coil structure, said suspen
sion comprising a semi-elliptical spider anchored
at one end only and including a voice coil sup
porting portion and ?exible arm portions, said
arm portions being so constructed and arranged 45
as to vibrate without being substantially
stretched.
2. A single vibratory voice coil suspension for
a sound reproducerand providing a unitary sup
port serving as the sole supporting means for one 50
end of the voice coil structure, said suspension
comprising a semi-elliptical spiderincluding a
single anchor portion, a voice coil supporting
portion and ?exible arm portions connected with
rear by means of a semi-elliptical ?exible spider
I9 which is preferably carried by means of a stud

5. In a sound reproducer including a pole plate
and pole stem cooperating to- provide an air gap,
a motor unit including a vibrating voice coil
structure, means for supporting said voice coil
structure including a single vibratory voice coil
suspension providing a unitary support serving
arm portions each comprising substantially ?at . as the sole supporting means for one end of said
?exible arms of progressively decreasing width voice coil structure, said suspension comprising
a semi-elliptical spider including a single anchor
from said anchor portion to the voice coil sup
portion secured to said pole plate, a voice coil
porting portion, said arm portions being, so con
structed and arranged as to- vibrate without being supporting ring secured to- said voice coil and a
pair of diverging ?exible tapered arms con
substantially stretched.
