‘This invention relates generally to dies and
particularly to dies of the perforating'type such
as those generally employed in the manufacture
of shoes having perforated designs therein.
Dies of the kind referred to have, as a general
rule, been made as a composite article, a separate
held in position during operation of the device

vent removal of the die without lifting the strip

The object of the present invention generally

A further object of the present invention is to
provide a die of the kind'referred to wherein the
conventional stripper plate may be lifted or re
moved with facility.
Referring now to the drawings, for an illustra- [10
tive'embodiment of the present invention the die
may comprise a base I upon which is mounted a
cutting element 2. In the embodiment shown the
cutting element comprises a plurality of perfo
rating tubes 3 in the center of which is a lozenge 15
shaped cutter ll. In the embodiment shown the
cutting element 2 is held upon a pad 5 which lat
ter is secured to base I. Pad 5 may be provided
with a plurality of studs varranged to receive
clamps B and nuts ‘I. The nuts 7 may be knurled
or otherwise provided for convenient manipula

be readily removed and exchanged.

Each of posts I3, l4 and I5 may conveniently
be composed of telescoping parts I‘! and I8 hav
ing ?anges l9 and 20 respectively or other suit
able means to prevent the inside part I‘! from
being ejected from the outside telescoping part
IS. A spring 21 may then be suitably mounted
within telescoping parts l1 and 18 so as to bias
10 these parts into their extended position as shown
in Figure 4, but nevertheless to permit movement
thereof upon the exertion of pressure down
wardly upon stripper plate l0.
As remarked above, post l5 may have its upper
15 portion arranged to cooperate with‘ latch I6 and
to this end may be formed with a head 22 having
a groove 23 therein for cooperation with latch
I6. In the embodiment shown latch l6 comprises
a simple spring, one end of which is mounted in
20 a block 24 having an aperture 25 for the reception
of head 22. The other end of the spring may be
curled as shown in Figure 2 or otherwise arranged
for convenient manipulation. When the stripper
plate is in its closed position’ as shown in section
25 in Figure 3, it will be understood that latch l6 ?ts
into groove 23 so as to hold the parts against
separation, but by mere ?exing of latch Hi the
parts are released so that the stripper plate may
be lifted on its hinges as shown in Figure 2.
A gauging device 26 having a gauging surface
21 may be provided. In accordance with the
present invention the gaugingdevice 26 is readily
removable and conveniently exchangeable. In
order to accomplish this the gauging device 26
35 may be provided with a pair of apertures 28 each
arranged to receive and cooperate with posts 29
upstanding from the upper surface of stripper
plate ID in order to prevent lateral displacement
of ‘the gauging device upon the stripper plate.

embodiment shown stud 30 is provided with a
bulbous end into the recess beyond which the
parts of spring clasp 32 may engage, thus holding

ranged, however, by the exertion of a sufficient
force in an upward direction upon gauging de
vice 26 the elements of spring clasp 32 will be
cammed outwardly by the bulbous'surface of stud
30, thus releasing the latter. In order to facili
tate the application of such upward pressure upon
gauging device 26 the corners thereof may be
upset slightly in order to provide lips 33 beneath
which the pressure of the ?ngers may be applied.
While in the foregoing description one illus

trative embodiment of a die constructed in ac
cordance with the present invention has been
disclosed, it will be understood that the several
features of the die illustrated in the accompany
ing drawings may be employed independently of
the other features to the end that certain of the
parts may be removed or exchanged with facility
while other parts may remain a permanent part
ofthe die, it will nevertheless be apparent that

It is realized that many modi?cations in the
precise arrangement shown in the accompanying
drawings will present themselves to those skilled
in the art and it is further realized that various
features of the present invention may be advanta
geously employed independently of other features
and consequently it is to be distinctly understood
that such modi?cations and the use of such indi
vidual features and subcombinations .of features
as do not depart from the spirit of this invention 10
are, although not speci?cally described herein,
contemplated by and within the scope of the
claims.
Having thus described the invention what is
claimed is:
1. A die of the kind described comprising, a
base, a cutting element mounted upon the base,
compressible posts carried by the base, and a
stripper plate hinged to some of said posts and
releasably connected to another of said posts.
2. A die of the kind described comprising, a
base, a cutting element mounted upon the base,
compressible posts carried by the base, and a
stripper plate hinged to some of said posts and a
latch cooperating with another of said posts to
connect the stripper plate thereto.
3. A die of the kind described comprising, a
base, a cutting element mounted upon the base,
compressible posts carried by the base, and a
stripper plate hinged to some of said posts and 30
a spring latch cooperating with another of said
posts to connect the stripper plate thereto.
4. A die of the kind described comprising, a
base, a cutting element mounted upon the base,
studs on said base, jaw members on each of said _~
studs having a part engageable with said cutting
element, and means for drawing said jaws into
engagement with said cutting element to hold
the same against the base, compressible posts
carried by the base, and a stripper plate hinged 40
to said posts.
5. A die of the kind described comprising, a
base, a cutting element mounted upon the base,
studs on said base, spring_jaw members on each
of said studs having a part engageable with said 45
cutting element, and means for drawing said jaws
into engagement with said cutting element to
hold the same against the base.
6. A die of the kind described comprising, a
base, a cutting element mounted upon the base, 50
studs on said base, jaw members on each of said
studs having a part engageable with said cutting
element, and means for drawing said jaws into
engagement with said cutting element to hold
the same against the base, compressible posts car 55
ried by the base, and‘ a stripper plate mounted on
said posts, a gauge having a post arranged to
cooperate with an aperture in said stripper plate,
and a yieldable latch engageable with the end of
said post beneath said stripper plate.

'7. A die comprising a stripper plate, a gauge
plate, one of said plates having a post with a
spheroidal end, the other of said plates having
an aperture for cooperating with said post and a
spring clasp for engaging said spheroidal end
when the post is in said aperture.
8. A. die comprising, a stripper plate, a gauge
plate, said plates respectively having cooperating
posts and apertures, and resilient means carried
by one of said plates for impositively engaging
and latching a post carried by the other plates in
position in the corresponding apertures. “
