Application December 18, 1936, Serial No. 116,561
1 Claim.
This invention relates to drill pipe tongs and
more particularly to the jaw elements thereof.
Heretofore, drill pipe tongs in the oil well, or
other analogous arts, have been made in various
5 sizes each designed primarily for use with pipes
of de?nite dimensions within a range of narrow
limits.v Thus a drill pipe tong designed for ex
ample for pipe diameters ranging from three to
four and one-half inches is restricted to pipes
10; of such sizes and could not be-used with pipes of
greater diameters. As a result of this condition,
it becomes necessary when pipes of different sizes
are used to change from one pair of drill pipe
tongs to another with a consignment expendi
15; ture of a great amount of time and labor. In
addition to this disadvantage it is also necessary
to have on hand an assortment of drill pipe tongs
of various sizes which is not only expensive but
also requires considerable storage space and an
20 undue amount of handling.
It is accordingly the principal object of this
invention to obviate all the above enumerated
disadvantages by providing for use with a stand
ard pair of drill pipe tongs of conventional de
25 sign, an extra casing jaw which is so designed
as to permit the insertion thereof either singly
or in any desired number between the. pivotally
connected casing jaws of the tongs whereby the
capacity of the tongs is substantially increased
30 to permit the use thereof with pipes of a diameter
(CI. 81—66)
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the extra casing
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View of the extracasing
Referring to Fig. 1, l0 denotes the arm of one 5
form of conventional drill pipe tongs only the
jaw carrying portion thereof being shown, said
arm In at its forward end terminating in a jaw
carrying extension l I. Pivotally mounted on the
extension H are the inner ends of the jaw ele
ments l2 and i3, and pivotally mounted on the
outer ends of said jaw elements are the clamping
jaw elements l4 and IS. The inner ends of the
jaw elements l2 and I3 are bifurcated in the
manner well known to provide opposed bosses‘ l6
and II, respectively (only the upper which are
shown) and which straddle the extension II for
pivotal connection thereto through the medium‘
of the pivot pins or bolts l8 and I9." The outer
ends of the jaw elements l2 and I3 terminate in 20'
single bosses (not shown) which ?t between the
opposed bosses 20 and 2| at the inner ends of the
jaw elements l4 and 15 which are identical with
the bosses I6 and H, the jaw elements l2, I3 and
I 4, l5 being pivotally connected together through 2'5
the medium of the pivot pins or bolts 22 and 23.
The outer end of the jaw element M has pivotally
connected thereto a latch element 24 provided
with a head 25 adapted to have interengaging
and locking relationship with the abutments 26 30
provided on’ the end of the jaw element I5 as
clearly shown. Both the jaw elements l4 and [5
are provided with manipulating arms 21 and 28,
much greater than that for which the drill pipe
tongs was normally intended.
Another object of the invention relates to the
adaptable nature of the extra jaw which is so respectively. 'Each of the jaw elements are pro

two of the standard casing jaws of the tongs or which are adapted to seat on the cylindrical sur
between the body of the tongs and an adjacent face of the drill pipe 30 in clamping engagement
jaw, said extra casing jaw being also adaptable therewith. Inasmuch as the above described

parts do not constitute any part of my invention,

description thereof is deemed unnecessary. The
Other objects and advantages of the invention drill pipe 30 is shown in Fig. 1 with the jaw ele
will become apparent as the description thereof ments of the drill pipe tongs clamped thereon.
In order to utilize the tongs I0 with a drill pipe
given hereunder proceeds with reference to the
45 accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 shows in a plan View the casing jaw end
of a conventional drill pipe tong in attached posi
tion to a drill pipe.
Fig. 2 shows in a similar plan View the casing

inserted extra casing jaw.

of a diameter much larger than the drill pipe 30, '
I have provided an extra casing jaw 32 shown
in perspective in Fig. 4. This extra casing jaw
is made of the same material as the jaw ele
ments of the tongs and is bifurcated at one end
to form the opposed bosses 33 and 34 which are 50
of identical dimensions as the bosses I6, I‘! and
20 and 2| of the jaw elements, and are spaced
apart the required distance to receive therein
either the jaw carrying extension I I or the single
boss on the outer ends of the inner jaw elements 55
l2 and I 3. At its other end the extra casing jaw
32 is provided with a single boss 35 which is ar
ranged in the central longitudinal plane thereof,
32 may be made of any desired shape or size
providing the same is insertible between the
pivotal jaw element connections of the tongs.
said single boss being of the same dimensions as
the single boss formed at the outer ends of the
inner jaw elements I2 and I3. Between the bosses
While in Figs. 2 and 3, the extra casing jaw has
been shown inserted between the jaw elements l2

may be inserted between the jaw elements l3
and I5, or between the inner jaw elements l2 and
with an arcuate projecting clamp face 35 that ex
10 tends laterally the full width of the casing jaw.
On its upper face the body portion of the extra
casing jaw is provided with strengthening webs
By virtue of the above construction the extra
15 casing jaw 32 may be inserted between any two
of the jaw elements or between either of the inner
jaw elements and the jaw carrying extension H
of the tongs to increase the size or capacity
thereof. Referring to Fig. 2, the extra casing
20 jaw 32' is shown inserted between the jaw ele
ments l2 and I4 and pivotally connected thereto
by the pivot pins or bolts l8 and 22; the opposed
bosses 33 and 34 straddling the single boss on the
forward end of the jaw element l2 and the single
boss 35 ?tted between the opposed bosses 20 on
the inner end of the outer jaw element M. It
will be observed that with the insertion of the
extra casing jaw 32 the drill pipe tongs ID will

tion various different embodiments of the inven 10
tion may be employed within the scope of the
accompanying claim.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature
of this invention, what is claimed is:
An extra casing jaw for insertion between a 15
pair of normally adjacent pivotally connected
clamping elements of a drill pipe tong, compris
ing a structurally integral unit having spaced
parallel wall portions, said wall portions converg
ing at one end thereof and merging into a single 20
wall portion arranged centrally between said
parallel wall portions, a laterally extending boss
formed at the other end of each parallel wall
portion to form an eye at each end thereof, said
eyes being provided with coaxial bores, a laterally 25
extending boss formed on each side of said single
wall portion and provided with an axial bore
therethrough to de?ne a single eye, said unit
accommodate a drill pipe 3! which is of a much
larger diameter than the drill pipe 30.
having a clamping portion, said clamping portion
In Fig. 3, there is shown two such extra casing
jaws 32 and 32' pivotally connected together as
in spaced relation to said parallel Wall portions,
each of said reinforcing walls being structurally
at 40 and inserted as a unit between the jaw ele
integral with and forming an extension of a
lateral boss on said parallel wall portions, and an
ments l2 and i4, being connected thereto in the
manner as set forth above. With the addition of
two such extra casing jaws, the drill pipe tongs I0
will accommodate a drill pipe 4| of a still greater
It is to be understood that the extra casing jaw
comprising parallelly extending reinforcing walls
arcuate clamping member extending transversely
beneath said wallyportions and joining the bot~
toms of said parallel reinforcing walls adjacent
their end edges.
