Abram K. Baer, Baltimore, Md., assignor to The
Strouse-Baer Company, Baltimore, Md.
Application August 2'7, 1937, Serial No. 161,333
/
(Cl. 2-237)
This invention relates to a garment for variations and modi?cations may be resorted to
1 Claim.
men’s, women’s, and children’s wear but more
particularly to an outer wear garment of the
which fall within the scope of the invention as
claimed.
'
.
The garment is illustrated by way of example
waistband type.
The invention has for its object to provide, in 7 as a pair of shorts, but it is to be understood that
a manner as hereinafter set forth a garment so
it is not limited to such form as it relates to any
of the type referred to including a snug ?tting
type of garment having a waistband at its top“ or
bottom.
In the drawing:—
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a garment, in' 10
accordance with this invention with the suspen
sion element thereof in non-extended position,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective
of the upper portion of the garment, looking
towards its front and with the suspension element 15
suspension therefor so constructed and arranged
thereof in extended position,
to not only satisfactorily suspend, but also to en
hance the appearance of the garment at the front
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective
of the upper portion of the garment looking
towards its back and with the suspension element
constructed, whereby when it is worn it will
snugly hug the waist of the body of the wearer
for suspending it without disturbing the appear
10 ance of the garment and at the same time main
tain the front of the waistband smooth and ?at
without discom?ture to the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment
of its waistband.
.
A further object of the invention is to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment
of the type referred to including as a part thereof
a yieldable suspension therefor, of a form which
dispenses with the use of _a belt slidably coupled
25 to the waistband for binding the latter to the
waist of the wearer to suspend the garment.
A further object of the invention is to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment
of the type referred to including a satisfactory
30 suspension therefor so formed and arranged to
permit of the free breathing of the wearer when
the garment is worn and in snug engagement
with the waist of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment
of the type referred to including an internally
arranged elastic suspension element therefor, at
tached at its ends to the waistband at two spaced
points of the inner face of the front of the latter
~10 and attached intermediate its ends to the inner
face of the back of the waistband.
Further objects of the invention are to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a garment
of the class referred to which is simple in its con
as Ul struction, strong, durable, compact, readily as
sembled, thoroughly efficient for the purpose‘ in
tended thereby, and comparatively inexpensive to
manufacture.
To the above ends essentially and to others
which may hereinafter appear, the invention con
sists of the novel construction, combination and
arrangement of parts as will be more speci?cally
described and illustrated in the accompanying
~
thereof in non-extended position, and’
p
> Figure 4 is an elevation of the suspension ele

ment looking towards its rear.
The garment as illustrated is what is termed
a pair of shorts, is generally indicated at 5 and
includes a body part 6 which is provided at its top
with a waistband ‘l and has depending from its
bottom a pair of legs 8, 9.
The waistband ‘l centrally of its back It] is
formed with a button hole I I and its sides l3, M
with button holes I5, l6 respectively. The button 30
holes I l , l5, l6 are disposed lengthwise and pref
erably on the longitudinal median of the waist
band.
Arranged within the top of the garment and.
opposing the inner face of the‘ waistband ‘l is an
elastic suspension element ll of strap-like form
having its body preferably of a width less than
that of the body of waistband ‘l and is so shown.
The lower lengthwise edge of element I'l aligns
with the bottom, its upper lengthwise edge is po- '
sitioned below the top and its length is materially
less than that of Waistband ‘I.
The element l1 consists of a single length of
elastic tape 18 having its end terminal portions
inturned or reverted to form. folds I9, 20 posi 45
tioned against the rear face‘ of the tape. Ar
ranged.‘ against the'rear face of the tape I8, at
the transverse center thereof is a button; 2|
which is anchored to element I] by the sewing
22. The button 2| coacts with'the button hole 50'
II for connecting the back of element H to the
back ID of the waistband 'l. Positioned against
the outer faces of the folds I9, 20 are buttons
drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the . 22, 23 which are anchored to element I‘! 'by the, ,
55 invention, but it is to be understood that changes,
sewing 24, 25 respectively.
The sewing 24, 25 55

also anchors the folds I9, 20 respectively against
the rear face of the tape. When the folds I9, 20
are anchored they provide for reinforcing the
ends of the element I1, as well as form cushions
for the buttons 22, 23 when the buttons tend to
move inwardly or shifted rearwardly at an in
clination to the horizontal on the application of
pressure to the ends of element IT. The central
part of the back portion of element l1 consti
tutes a cushion for button 2| when pressure is
7 applied to the latter. The buttons 22, 23 coact
with the button holes l5, [6 respectively for con
necting the ends of the element I‘! to the points
of mergence of the front l2 of the waistband
ment I‘! between the bends of the folds will be
uninterrupted whereby, when element I1 is worn
and extended no discom?ture from buttons bear
ing on the wearer is present.
The construction of the garment will provide
for it to snugly ?t around the waist thereby elimi
nating all possibility of the garment dropping
down and at the same time doing away with the
unsightliness caused by the pulling of a belt tight,
as well as the overcoming objection of a tight
belt preventing free breathing due to the binding
of the waist band against the wearer.
What I claim is:—
A garment including a body portion formed at
its top with a waist band, said waste band at 15
each end of its front portion and centrally of
its back portion being provided with a button
