Edward G. Rix, Chicago, ill., assigner to Ameri
can Perforator Company, Chicago, lll., a cor
poration of Illinois
Application May 13, 1937, Serial No. 142,325
5 Claims. <o1. 1164-93)
My invention relates to perforators.
One of the objects of my invention is to pro
vide a perforator having improved actuating
means for the punch-carryingy slide.
5
A- further object of my invention is to provide
an improved perforator in which the lower
punch guide which serves as` a stripper plate is
fitted with a head so that it will locate the stripper
plate to bring the holes into alignment with the
10 punches and with the holes in the die plate.
A further object of my invention is to pro
vide an improved perforator in which the head
is provided with guides for the pusher bar and
with wells or recesses to receive the lever re
]5 turning spring and the bumper for the lever.
A further object of my invention is to provide
a perforator in which stop links are provided
to limit the upward movement of the lever.
A further object is to provide an improved
20 perforator in which the lever pivoted on the
head actuates the pusher bar and is provided
with stop links, and means for holding the upper
end of the returning spring in place.
A further object of my invention is to provide
25 an improved perforator having aligned holes in
the spring well and lever for receiving a packing
screw.
rator shown comprises a base I which may be
of cast metal, a pair of parallel spaced plate
brackets 2 mounted on the rear end of the base
and having portions overhanging the base to
provide a throat between the base and brackets, 5
a head 3 which may be. a die casting extending .
between said plate brackets and supported there
by, a punch-actuating slide or pusher 4 extend
ing between said side plates and having its ends
slidably mounted in vertically extending guide '10
channels 5 in the side plates 6 forming part of
the head 3, an actuating lever 1 for the punch
actuating member 4 pivotally mounted at 8 on
the head 3 adjacent the front end thereof and
extending rearwardly from its pivotal axis, a l1&5
coil compression spring 8a' for returning the lever
'I, a pair of links 9 pivotally connected at IIl
with the lever -I and at II with the ends .of the '
punch-actuating member 4, a punch guiding
and stripper plate member I2 below the punch- 20
actuating member 4, and a die plate I3 below the
stripper plate I2 and riveted to the base I at I4.
The base I is provided with a pair of upwardly
extending standards I5 at its rear end to which
_the plate brackets 2 may be secured by rivets I6, lL25
or the like. The head 3 provided with the pair
of side plates 6 lying against the plate brackets
the holes in the die plates. '
2 may be secured thereto in any suitable man
ner, as by rivets Il. The front end of the head 3
is recessed as indicated at I8 to receive the front -§30
ends of the plate brackets 2. The front end of
the head is also provided with a pair of hori
A further object of my invention is to provide
a perforator construction which can be used in
zontally extending recesses I9 to receive and
position a pair of parallel horizontal tongues 20'
A further object of my invention is to provide
an improved perforator having aligning openings
30 in the stripper plate and die to hold these parts
in their proper relative position when drilling
35 building up perforators having diiîerent depths
of throat, simply by changing the plate brackets
on the guiding and stripper member I2, as 35
and base.
Further objects and advantages of the inven
tion will appear from the description and claims.
40
In the drawing, in which is shown an embodi
ment of my invention,
The spring well 2I which receives the lower
end of the spring 8a. is supported by and between
the side plates 6 of the head by means of webs
22, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The 4bumper- 40
receiving pocket 23 is also supported by and be
tween the side plates 6 of the head by means of
webs 24.
A pair of links 25 are provided for limiting
the upward movement of the lever l, these links 45
being pivotally connected with down-turned por

The links
are slotted at 21 to receive a screw 28 which ex
tends through the tongues 20, vplate brackets 2,
and side plates 6, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
50
The punch-actuating member 4 comprises a
pusher member 29 which may be a die casting
pivotally connected with the actuated links 9
at II and a channel member 30 which may be ot
sheet metal secured to the pusher member by 55

means of rivets 3| or the like( The heads of the
punches 32 are held between the pusher member
andthe channeled lifter member as shown in
Fig. 2. The lower ends of the punches are guided
in the stripper plate l2 so as to pass through the
openings in the die plate I3 when the lever 'I is
depressed.
.
In the manufacture of the stripper plate and
die plate, the .punch openings in the stripper
10 plate I2 may be die-cast. The stripper plate I2
and die plate I3 are then assembled in properv
relation by means of positioning pins 33 pass
ing through registering openings in the stripper
plate and die plate, as shown in Fig. 6.
15
The
punch openings'in the die plate I3 may then be
drilled, using the openings in the stripper plate
mounted on said head adjacent the front end
thereof and extending rearwardly from its pivotal
axis, a pair of links pivotally connecting said lever
with the ends of said punch-actuating member,
and a punch guiding and stripper plate member.

and strippermember having a pair of parallel hor
izontal tongues embracing said head, said head
having a pair of horizontally-extending¿recesses
to receive and position said tongues.

vided with an opening 35 which is in .alignment
30 with'the .opening formed by the flange 3,4 in the
lever when rthe lever is depressed, so that in
packing the perforator for shipment, a screw can
be inserted through these openings and a nut
threaded 4into the .ends of the screw to hold the
35 vlever in its lowered position.
