This invention relates to typewriting machines
control which aüords advance of the carriage rin

a machine known in the art as a “Varityllëik”
in which a supporting wheel carries interchange
able type shuttles, so that various styles `'and
sizes of type may be used at will.
Machines according to this invention are ca-k
pable of producing typed sheets in simulation of
ordinary printed matter which may be used as
“make ready” for reproduction by photolitho
graphic or other printing processes. The print
ing type, however, must be given various con
ventional dimensions as to Width, and lit is de
sirable that different styles and sizes of type, such
as occurs in ordinary printed matter in the way
of headings, emphasis and the like, may be used.
Means yfor attaining this result is disclosed in my
typed characters.
Another object of the invention is to provide
means whereby diiîerent styles of type may be
usedin which the characters. do not have the
same relative Widths in the 'different styles.
It is a further object of the invention to pro
vide mechanism for the purpose stated that is
10 adapted to the use of several diiïerent sizes of
type. It is also an object of the invention to
insure that the platen carriage advance cannot
begin until the printing impression has been
Patent No. 2,298,805, issued October 13, 1942.
The invention as disclosed herein is capable
of producing a typed sheet in characters o'f con 20
ventional dimensions diiierentially spaced in
many diiierent fonts of type; to accomplish this
completed.
Another object of the invention is to provide
a mechanism of the kind which is> both simple
and automatic, so that it may be used by any
typist without special training or skill in its op
eration.
_
Another object of the invention is to provide
improved back-spacing mechanism whereby the
carriage may be back-spaced different distances
