LIVE SOUND REINFORCEMENT
HOW TO TUNE THE MONITOR SYSTEM
Most often, monitor engineers listen to the sound of their own voice to tune monitors. You may, however, use some other sound source if you desire - there is no right or wrong way. The two other sources you may want to try are music (a CD player works well) or a Real Time Analyzer and pink noise (positioning the test mic at a typical listening distance).
1. After assembly, do a systems check
2. Set mix EQs flat and input level controls at unity gain
3. Set console master faders at unity gain
4. Set channel fader at unity gain (if using post-fader sends)
5. PFL the channel and set mic preamp level
6. Bring up the channel send until fairly loud (but no ringing)
7. Adjust crossover for even blend of all components
8. Adjust mix EQ for full, even and natural sound
9. Increase level on channel send (slowly) as needed
10. Adjust mix EQ to stop feedback (only as much as needed - avoid massive cutting if possible).
Note: on mics that aren't going to move, the channel or mix phase-reverse may help reduce feedback.
11. Repeat for each mix
12. Turn on all mixes together and adjust mix EQs and levels as needed
13. Do a line check and start monitor sound check.
