How to Insert Movies, Music, & Links into PowerPoint
♦ Warning before trying any of the steps below make sure you are saving the PowerPoint file, movies, or
music onto the same device. To avoid any problems, I would suggest you use a FLASH drive (also
known as a thumb or jump drive).
Adding MOVIES:
1. Save your PowerPoint to your flash drive.
2. Save the “.WMV” movie file you want to use to your flash drive.
a. WARNING: This handout only shows how to insert “.WMV” movie files because they work
best with PowerPoint. If you are trying to insert a “.MOV” or “.FLV” movie file into PowerPoint
it becomes more complicated and you will need to ask for additional technical assistance.
b. If you want to show a movie clip from the internet, download it and save it to your flash drive.
c. If you can’t download the movie from the internet, but still want to use it, skip down to the
“adding links” section.
3. Click on the slide where the movie will be added.
4. At the top of your screen, click on “Insert,” “Movies and Sounds,” then “Movie from file”
5. From the “look in” drop down menu open your flash drive.
2
6. Click on the movie you want to use; then click “OK.”
7. A screen will pop up asking if you want your movie to play automatically. Click “YES.”
8. A box will appear showing how large the movie screen will be. You can adjust the size by dragging the
corner dot.
9. Now view your PowerPoint show to make sure the movie plays automatically. Click on “Slide Show”
then “View Show.”
