WHAT DOES “ARRIVING” MEAN?
People may think that career progression gets easier at the top, or even that you’ve “arrived” and need
do no more. For most of us, the reality is quite the opposite. At or near the top, we’re in more rarefied
air and the going gets tougher in a different way.
In the S – Curve framework, it’s the part where visible progress is slowing down again. This can be
frustrating, boring, and stress inducing, or all the above.
When you are at or close to the top, it’s time to take a close look again at what success or “arriving”
now means to you.
Without clarity on your definition of success – the goals you are working toward – it will be hard to
feel fulfilled and you run the risk of under shooting your potential.

Gating Items are those things you have to demonstrate you’ve mastered in order to continue along
your path. Along the way, you've mastered many Gating Items to get to where you are.
Some are obvious, like passing the CPA exam if you are an accountant, while others are subtle and
easily missed, such as having influence or gravitas.
It's important to get clear on the Gating Items ahead of you right now, otherwise you may plateau
prematurely.

HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE
In the end, none of this makes a difference if it simply remains in your mind, tucked away in a “useful
for later” file.
The question is, what will you actually do?
Whatever it is, make that conscious commitment, write it down and place it where you can see it every
day. If it helps, find someone to partner with and help hold each other accountable.
Then, actually go and do that thing. No excuses.
You’ll be glad you did. And you will feel proud of yourself. In fact, you’re going to love it.
And remember, you’ve got too much talent to waste it.

BONUS TIPS
Advancing at the top can seem daunting. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to
ease the path. Here are some of them:
Get Started
The important thing is to get started. Choose just one or two things that will make the biggest
difference while being relatively easy for you to do on a consistent basis.
That is, start out with something manageable that also delivers tangible positive results that you can
either see or feel.
For example:

What if you were to identify a junior person you think has real potential, and start to mentor
her? You'll be contributing to her success as well as that of the organization, feel good about
yourself, and most likely learn from your mentee as well.
Can you identify a way to save the organization money or add a new business line or enhance
its reputation? Taking the initiative to put that into action contributes to the success of the
organization while building your profile and giving you personal satisfaction.
Focus on Making Progress
Learning how to advance when you're at or near the top is about progress, not perfection.
Find an empowering way to note your progress.

It could be as simple as noticing how you feel today (say, on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is
feeling highly positive about your career) and then checking back in periodically to see how far
you've come.
Or you may have a more quantitative measurement (e.g., the number of times each week that
you are doing what you set out to do, whether it’s exercising or getting home in time for dinner
with the family or attending a course you’ve signed up for).
It all depends on what change you set out to make. Just make sure it's a positive reinforcement, and
not an additional drag on your energy.
Enlist Others
You don't have to go it alone. Find people who will help you stay on track, and encourage you along the
way.

MAY CHIEN BUSCH
Speaker, Consultant, Executive Coach
Through her consulting practice, May works with senior management of corporations and
professional services firms on organizational strategy, leadership development, and client
effectiveness. She offers workshops, keynotes, consulting and executive coaching to high-potential and
high-performance leaders and their teams.
Prior to this, May enjoyed a 24-year career at Morgan Stanley spanning two continents in nine
different business roles across Investment Banking, Capital Markets and Firm Management. She was
most recently Chief Operating Officer for Europe where she was responsible for the development and
implementation of the firm’s business strategy in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
May chaired the firm’s European Diversity Council and was a member of Morgan Stanley’s European
Management Committee as well as a Board Member of the Firm’s UK broker dealer. Prior to that, she
spent most of her career in client facing roles, advising senior clients at major corporations in North
America, Europe and the UK, and managing teams with client responsibility.
Following her successful investment banking career, May focuses on bringing her insights and
experiences to help top leaders advance their organizations, and to promote greater thought
leadership, diversity and entrepreneurial spirit in the workplace.

In addition to her work with major corporations and professional services firms, May has lectured at
Imperial College Business School, Cass Business School, Stanford University’s Clayman Institute for
Gender Research, Harvard University’s Office of Career Services, and ASU’s W.P. Carey School of
Business.
May is also Senior Advisor and Executive in Residence in the Office of the President, and Professor of
Practice at W.P. Carey School of Business, at Arizona State University where she lectures on
leadership, and works on interdisciplinary initiatives across the university with an emphasis on
leadership, entrepreneurship and enhancing the engagement between business and academia.
She chairs The Idea Enterprise, a program for bringing experienced business leaders to ASU to help
turn its best ideas into forces for change in the world. In addition, she is co-designing a Leadership
Academy for faculty and staff at the University. ASU is the largest US public research university, and
pioneer of the New American University model for higher education.
May graduated with a BA magna cum laude in Economics from Harvard University and an MBA from
Harvard Business School. She is a graduate of The Meyler Campbell Business Coach Programme. She is
married with three children.
