Dave works as an ESP for Locomotor Services, NHS City and Hackney, qualifying as a Non-medical Prescriber in
2008. In addition, he holds a post at City University, Department of Applied Biological, Diagnostic and Therapeutic
Sciences, where he lectures on MSc Modules including Medicines Management, Pain and Analgesia, and NonMedical Prescribing. A presenter at the CSP Congress 2010 on Non-medical Prescribing in Primary Care and a
member of the CSP's Medicines Management Advisory Group. In 2008 Dave developed a specialist Non-medical
Presribing led clinic for Chronic MSK Pain in Primary Care winning a Service Innovation Award. Dave is Clinical
Director of Complete-Physio Limited - a London based chain of Sports Injury and MSK Clinics
Course description:
This is a fantastic opportunity for physiotherapists and AHP’s to increase their knowledge and confidence of
pharmacology and pain control medication. Assessing and treating patients with poorly controlled pain,
through advice and education on safe and effective medicines usage within legal scope of practice.
Also helping to challenge common dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes to medications.
Course outline:
1. Medicolegal framework for prescribing and advising patients on medications - how this relates to physiotherapists
& other non-medical MSK practitioners at present
2. Introduction to pharmocokinetics (what body does to drug) and pharmacodynamics (what drug does to body)
Её examine these main principles and look at clinical relevance in primary care / pain management - linking to
good medicines management and optimisation of analgesic effectiveness
3. Side effects and adverse drug reactions - differentiation and managing / reporting
Её Understanding key mechanisms of common drug-drug interactions and adverse drug reactions
Её consider groups at high risk of adverse drug reaction and drug-drug interactions
4. Detailed analysis of common pain medication - Including ;- Paracetamol, NSAIDs, Opioids, Trycyclic
Antidepressants, Anticonvulsants
Её Mechanism of action
Её Specific drug selection and efficacy
Её Side effects
Её Safety issues / pharmacovigilance
Её Ways to maximise benefits to patients
Её Sports Injuries and Acute soft tissue injury management
Её Evidence based practice and appraisal of common prescribing algorithms
5. Managing patients with poorly controlled pain - how to be most effective within your scope of practice,
compliance / concordance. Medicines management. Medicines usage reviews
Её when and who to ask for help in manageing these patients
Её Presenting information effectively when discussing medicines to GP, ESP etc
Её relating to pharmacological characteristics of pain medications
6. Top Tips
Её addressing common dysfunctional beleifs and attitudes to medications (already prescribed to patient)
Её other commonly encountered problems and best ways to manage.
This course will be very much tailored to therapists working in out-patients and community settings with main
focus on pain medications although relevant information on other commonly encountered medications will be
discussed during day.

on the course and receipt of the course fee. If you are being funded to attend a course (see section
below) the full course fee must be made at least 4 weeks prior to the course date.
A full refund, less a ВЈ50 administration fee, will be made if written cancellation is received in the
HES Office four weeks prior to the course date. No refunds will be made after this time, for whatev
er reason. Substitute delegates are accepted at any time.
HES reserves the right to cancel the course if there are insufficient enrolments. If, in the unlikely
event a tutor cannot attend the course, HES will endeavour to find a new date for the course to be
held. HES will not be held responsible for any damages incurred as a result of course cancellation.
