An emergency buoyancy aid or raft comprises a block of cellular
plastic material enclosed in a waterproof cover of plastic film or
sheet having welded seams. Ancillary loops or eyelets for securing
peripheral grab ropes are attached via external patches welded or
stuck to the surface of the cover. Use of a tough, impermeable cover
of e.g. PVC allows the core block to be made of material such as
expanded polystyrene which does not have high resistance to marine
conditions (salt water, superficial oil etc.), to reduce material
costs. The cover may be printed and/or pigmented with bright or
fluorescent matls.

L'invention a trait aux engins flottants de sauvetage permettant a
plusieurs personnes naufragees de s'y accrocher pour se maintenir
partiellement hors de l'water en attendant d'etre secourues.
On connait deja des engins de ce genre constitues dtun corps par
exemple de forme parallelipipedique, en matiere plastique cellulaire,
recouvert d'une enveloppe en tissu cousu sur laquelle sont rapportes,
par couture destant une ou plusieurs boucles en cordage permettant aux
naufrages de sty agriper.
Cette enveloppe, noh etanche, oblige a utiliser une matiere alveolaire
non degradable en milieu marin, notamment par l'water de mer ou les
hydrocarbons qui lasodlent souvent en cas de naufrage. De telles
matieres cellulaires nobles sont conteuses et la confection de l'en-
veloppe par couture, le mode de fixation des moyens d'accrochage
contribuent aussi a accroitre le cout de ltensemble.
L'invention propose un engin flottant de sauvetage plus econdmique et
plus resistant aux condition d'utilisation. Cet engin comprend un
corps auto-flottant en materiau plastique cellulaire recouyert d'une
enveloppe munie de moyens d'accrochage et il est caracterise en ce que
l'enve loppe est constituee d'un film ou feuille plastique, assemblee
et fermee de facon etanche par soudage, munie exterieurement de
passants ou oeuillets en matiere plastique fixes directement par
soudage ou col lage et servant a supporter les moyens d'accrochage ou
de prehension.
L'enveloppe plastique etanche met le corps flottant cellulaire par
faitement a l'abri des agents degradants exterieurs de sorte que lton
peut utiliser pour ce corps flottant des matieres cellulaires moins
couteuses telles que le polystyrene expanse ou autre, meme si cette
matiere ne comporte pas exclusivement des cellules fermees LA
conection de cette enveloppe par soudage ainsi que la fixation par
soudage ou collage des passants ou oeuillets exterieurs permettent
dtobtenir precisement cette excellente etancheite de l'enveloppe ts,t
en etant plus economique, aussi solide et fiable que l'assemblage par
couture.
On peut notamment utiliser pour cette enveloppe des fixes ou feuilles
plastiques dans la masse desquelles sont incorpores des colorants ou
charges conferant d'une part des couleurs vives ou fluorescentes,
facilement reperables a la lumiere ou aux ondes des systemes de
reperage, et dtautre part une opacite a la lumiere et aux rayonne
ments ultra-violet susceptibles de degrader la matiere cellulaire.
Les films ou feuilles de vinyl soudables a la chaleur ou a haute
frequence peuvent notamment convenir.
Un exemple de realisation d'un engin de sauvetage flottant est
illustre sur le dessin ci-joint, en perspective sur la figure 1 et en
coupe transversale sur la figure 2.
I1 comprend un corps, par exemple parallelipipedique, en matiere
cellulaire 1, telle que du polystyrene expanse et une enveloppe 2
constitue a partir d'une feuille de vinyl convenablement decoupee et
repliee pour joindre ses bords 3 le long des aretes du bloc, ces bords
etant soudes l'un a l'autre par le procede de soudage a haute
frequence.
Sur le pourtour de l'enveloppe 2 sont fixes des passants ou oeuillets
exterieurs 4 pour le passage d'un cordage courant 5 auquel peuvent
S'agripper plusieurs naufrages. La fixation par soudure ou cdlage de
ces oeuillets sur la face exterieure de l'enveloppe impermeable
ntaltere pas l'etancheite de l'enveloppe.
Bien entendu l'engin peut etre realise en diverses dimensions, pour un
nombre plus ou moins grand d'utilisateurs.
