?iOS 12 allows you to better disconnect
from your device to enjoy the moment?
Toupee-chested music mogul Simon Cowell recently
went on record to say that he?d taken a ten-month
hiatus from his mobile phone and that he was much
calmer and happier as a result. While such a drastic
course of action is unthinkable for many of us, Apple
has boldly implemented new features into iOS 12
designed to reduce interruptions and allow you to
manage your screen time more effectively. These
include Activity Reports, App Limits and new and
improved Do Not Disturb and Notifications controls that
allow you to better disconnect from your device to enjoy
the moment and the people you are with. You can read
all about these and other huge iOS 12 enhancements in
our WWDC 2018 special report starting on page 8.
Also this issue we present your ultimate Apple Travel
Guide featuring all of the best apps and gear to use on
holiday (from booking to relaxing) and showcase apps

Say hello to
macOS Mojave
Does Mojave?s impressive feature list give enough reason to upgrade?
?Dark Mode brings a dramatic new look to macOS that puts content
front and centre, familiar iOS apps come to the Mac for the first time
and the redesigned Mac App Store makes finding new apps easier?
macOS Mojave has officially been unveiled as Apple?s 15th Mac operating
system. The new operating system was announced on stage at Apple?s
Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in early June, with Tim Cook,
the company?s CEO describing Mojave as being ?inspired by pro users, but
designed for everyone?. A host of new features have been added, but is it
enough to make users upgrade? We?ve taken an in-depth look at macOS
Mojave and found some standout features.

The Mac has taken a
backseat while Apple has
focused its attention on
iOS and watchOS in recent
times, so it?s finally time for
the desktop and laptop to get some love.
The headline feature is a new Dark Mode
which turns the main components of the
operating system dark grey and looks
stunning. Users can toggle between a
light and dark desktop, and built-in apps
like Mail, Messages, Maps, Calendar and
Photos all include Dark Mode designs.
Your desktop can now react differently
according to the time of the day, toggling
Dark Mode on and off automatically.
Thought your Mac App Store has been
looking dated for while? You?re not the only
one. Finally, Apple has given the Mac App
Store a huge design and feature overhaul,
bringing it in line with its redesigned iOS
equivalent. The redesign sees big billboards
calling out new apps and collections,
as well as a lot more editorial content. It
highlights new and updated apps in the
Discover tab, while tabs for Create, Work,
Play and Develop help users find apps for a
specific project or purpose.
Apart from the obvious redesign, the
big news here is who is onboard for the
relaunch. Microsoft and Adobe will be
making Office 365 and Lightroom CC
respectively available for download via the
Mac App Store for the first time.
Get organised
Mac users with messy desktops will
love a new feature called Stacks, which
can organise even the most cluttered of
desktops by automatically stacking files
The Mac App Store is completely redesigned with rich
editorial content and new tabs for easier app discovery.

into neat groups based on file type. Users
can customise their Stacks to sort based
on other file attributes like date and tags.
Elsewhere, a new Gallery view has been
added to Finder that makes it easier than
ever to view collections of images, while
a Preview pane now shows all of a file?s
metadata, making it easier to manage
media assets.
In macOS Mojave, handy apps including
News, Stocks, Voice Memos and Home
are now available on Mac for the first time.
These iOS favourites now have a place
on Mac, which in the form of News and
Home especially is long overdue. As with
all Apple software updates, enhanced
privacy and security remain a top priority
in macOS Mojave. In Safari, enhanced
Intelligent Tracking Prevention helps block
social media ?Like? or ?Share? buttons and
comment widgets from tracking users
without permission.
Apple are on the offensive already:
?macOS Mojave is a major update that
introduces powerful new features for a wide
range of Mac users, from consumers to
pros,? says Craig Federighi, Apple?s senior
vice president of Software Engineering.
?Dark Mode brings a dramatic new look to
macOS that puts your content front and
centre, familiar iOS apps come to the Mac
for the first time and the redesigned Mac
App Store makes finding new apps easier
and more enjoyable than ever.?
macOS Mojave instantly looks a more
appealing proposition than its predecessor
High Sierra. At the time of going to
press, a developer preview was already
available but keep your eyes peeled for the
public beta, which will be downloadable
throughout the summer. Expect macOS
Mojave to be ready for action sometime in
the autumn.
watchOS 5 delivers high-performance
features for running enthusiasts,
including a new steps per minute metric
for indoor and outdoor runs and walks,
as well as a new pace alarm for outdoor
runs that alerts users when they are
behind or ahead of their designated
target pace.
Activity competitions
Building on the excitement around
Activity Sharing, watchOS 5 now
enables users to invite another Apple
Watch wearer to compete in a sevenday Activity competition, earning points
for closing Activity Rings, while receiving
coaching notifications to help stay
engaged and win the week.
Podcasts comes to
Apple Watch
Users can now listen to their favourite
podcasts on the go with Apple Podcasts
on Apple Watch and stream any podcast
they have using Siri. Episodes will
automatically sync to Apple Watch, and
as they?re listened to on other devices,
the app will automatically refresh with
the latest episode.
The Apple Podcasts
app comes to Apple
Watch in watchOS 5.

Introducing iOS 12
The WWDC 2018 was all about the software and taking centre stage
was the latest incarnation of Apple?s mobile operating system
iOS 12
Key Features
Faster, more
responsive
Interestingly, iOS 12 will
improve the performance of all
supported devices, especially
the older ones thanks to
optimisation of the A-series
chipset.
New apps
There are some awesome new
bolt-on apps with iOS 12, such
as ScreenTime, that helps you
monitor the amount of time you
and your family spend on your
devices.
Memoji and fun effects
The Messages app now lets you
create your own personal animated
avatars and provides quick and easy
access to a wealth of fun new camera
effects and filters.
Shared AR
The new USDZ file format
makes it easy to share AR files
between devices and enjoy
incredible new AR experiences
just by pointing your device at
inanimate objects.
10

Group FaceTime
You can now FaceTime with up to 32
different people simultaneously, and it
is built into the Messages interface so
you can go from group chat to group
Facetime instantly.

Though not a huge
update by any stretch
of the imagination, iOS
12 will instead offer an
improvement in response
and performance across all supported
iPhone and iPad models (which is the
same set that were able to run iOS 11),
improvements to existing features and
apps, including some fun new ways to
communicate, and a sprinkling of cool
new apps to make even better use of the
extensive capabilities of your iOS device.
We?re very excited.
Turbo charged
Perhaps most impressive of all iOS 12?s
features is how it will double-down on
performance to make every device that
previously supported iOS 11 faster and
more responsive, especially the older
ones. Now your apps will launch up to
40 per cent faster, your iOS keyboard will
pop-up 50 per cent faster and swiping
to launch your camera will be up to 70
per cent faster. This is thanks to Apple
optimising the A-series chipset so that
the CPU performance is ramped up to its
highest level when you need a performance
spike to scroll content or launch apps, and
then wound-down afterwards to preserve
battery power. It?s like to plunging an
adrenaline syringe into your iPhone for a
short burst of additional power.
Shared AR experiences
Apple has been a long-time champion
of augmented reality (AR) and iOS 12
pushes this technology further to change
the way in which we work and have fun.
In collaboration with Pixar, Apple has
developed a new AR file format called
USDZ ? a compact single file format that is
The new ?For You? section in Photos includes your
Memories, filter recommendations and more?
The iOS 12 Photos app also recommends photos to
share with other people?
optimised for sharing while retaining highquality 3D graphics and animations. USDZ
works across iOS and files can be easily
shared through Messages and Mail. These
files place 3D objects in the real world, like
an AR ?Quick-Look? and the possibilities
are endless. For example, USDZ can
revolutionise the way we shop online by
allowing us to see the items we want to
purchase, such as appliances, in situ within
our homes. The effect is slightly akin to QR
code technology, but on a altogether more
jaw-dropping scale.
This technology is made possible by
the introduction of AR Kit 2 that brings
improved face-tracking, realistic rendering,
3D object detection, personal experiences
and shared experiences to iOS 12. This
includes fun two-player games in which
cool graphics are superimposed on what
both players can see on their iOS screens,
from their own unique perspective, and
other people can even sit in and spectate
from the side. It is this sort of technology
than can make iOS a huge-hitting gaming
platform and the potential in the classroom
is immense.
In iOS 12, new and exciting AR experiences can be
triggered by inanimate objects, such as LEGO
Enhanced Photos app
As up to a trillion photos are captured
on iPhones each year, the Photos app
is the best way to relive and share those
moments, made easy by the existing
scene recognition software that makes
finding specific people, objects and even

fauna instantaneous. iOS 12 will boost the
app?s search capabilities still further by
suggesting scenes, places, etc, and even
categories of photos to help speed up your
search. Photos can index over four million
events by time and location making your
images easier to find.
Another new feature of Photos is the
?For You? tab. This presents a personal
round-up of featured photos (such as ?On
this day?), effects suggestions (such as
looping a Live Photo) and all of your shared
album activity into one handy photographic
digest. The app even now scrutinises
your photos and, using facial recognition,
will suggest people to share them with
based on whether those people appear
in the images. It?s quite staggering (and
frighteningly efficient). Once the images
have been shared, the recipient will get a
notification on their device to ?share back?,
bouncing their images of the same event
back so both users get the full set.
A smarter Siri
With over ten billion requests processed
every month, Siri is already the mostused digital assistant available that works
across all of your iOS devices. In iOS 12,
Apple has introduced a new feature called
?Shortcuts? whereby any third-party app
can expose quick actions to Siri that you
can then request using your own custom
phrase. When this phrase is spoken, Siri
will instantly jump into the app to bring
up the information you need. Again, this
With Shortcuts you can incorporate Siri even
more into your daily routine?
12
187
With the Shortcuts app you can create Siri
shortcuts to any third-party app that you use
often, enhancing your daily productivity
can help speed up productivity across
all aspects of our lives. Then there is ?Siri
Suggestions?, a feature where Siri can
suggest things based on your current
location. For example, it can suggest that
you purchase your usual morning coffee
? straight from your Lock screen ? in
anticipation of you passing your favourite
coffee shop. With the new Shortcuts
iOS 12 app, you can even create your
own shortcuts with multiple steps across
multiple applications using a simple dragand-drop interface.
The improved Do Not Disturb mode can be
accessed through the iOS 12 Control Center
Monitor screen time
So engaging are modern apps that they
often demand time that could be better
spent in the moment, distracting us with
notifications to draw us in when we should
be enjoying time with the people around
us, so Apple has introduced a built-in set
of new features into iOS 12 to help us limit
distractions and understand how we are
spending our time.
Do Not Disturb has been improved so
that you can block all notifications from
your screen for periods determined by you.
This can be easily implemented via Control
Center ? just set the ending time and the
ignorance will be bliss. You can also limit
how many notifications you receive by
a process called ?Instant Tuning, which
can be done from the Lock screen. If you
receive a notification, you can press on it to
get the option to limit further notifications
from that app. Another new feature called
?Screen Time? empowers you with insight

iOS 12 at-a-glance
All of the must-know, exciting additions to iPhone and iPad
Measure
With an interface similar to
the Camera app, instead of
taking images, AR technology means
that you can tap and drag a line across
the object you are measuring on the
screen for an instant measurement.
Stocks
You can now create your own personal Animojis, called
?Memojis?, to look like yourself
and control over how you spend your time.
You will receive reports every week in the
form of an activity summary that details
how you used your device, including how
much time you are spending on each
individual app, how many times per hour
you are picking up your device and what is
drawing you in.
You can still effortlessly
browse all of the market data
at-a-glance, but new ?spark lines? have
been added to show the performance
throughout the day. Also added is
business news and iPad compatibility.
Apple Books
New look, new name. Apple
has dropped the ?i? from
iBooks and introduced some new
features, including ?Reading Now? that
makes it easy to pick up where you left
off and a redesigned store.
Shortcuts
Fun effects
The final area where iOS 12 really takes off
is in communication and how you interact
with others through your devices. There
are new iPhone X Animojis to enjoy and
tongue-detection means that you/they can
now pull more expressive faces. You can
also now create your own personalised
Animojis that can look like you, called
?Memojis?. With a deep set of customisation
options you can set skin tones, hairstyles,
accessories, the works, so that you create
an animated avatar that looks like you.
You can even add these as effects in the
Camera app, along with new fun filters and
other assorted effects. Then there is Group
FaceTime. Apple has integrated FT into the
Messages app in iOS 12, which not only
means you can go straight from texting to
FaceTime, you can go from group-chatting
to group FaceTiming as up to 32 people
can now share the screen at once! We?re
stoked for the September roll-out.
An easy-to-use new system
that lets you create Siri
shortcuts based on your daily routines.
Siri will then use GPS and other
sensors to know intuitively when to
bring up reminders and notifications.
Do Not Disturb
This has been improved
to give you more freedom
to determine when you receive
notifications. You can now disable
them for set periods and then decided
exactly when you pick them up.
FaceTime
You can now video conference
with up to 32 people
simultaneously and the interface is
very slick, enlarging the onscreen tile of
whoever is speaker and then shrinking
it when someone else starts to speak.
News
A new ?Browse? tab allows you
to discover new channels and
topics and makes it even easier to jump
to your favourites. A new sidebar also
makes the app much easier to navigate,
especially on iPad.
Voice Memos
This app has also been rebuilt
to make it easier to use and the
app will also be appearing on the iPad for
the first time. With iCloud support, your
memos will also be synced and available
across all of your devices.
Notifications
You have more freedom over
how these are handled and can
even limit notifications from apps that you
rarely use straight from the Lock screen.
Siri will even recommend disabling
notifications from your lesser-used apps.
Photos
An enhanced search function
makes it easier to find images
quickly and easily and you even get a
daily photo digest of recommended filters
and photos to share with other people in
your images based on facial-recognition.
Screen Time
This feature lets you monitor how
you spend your time on your iOS
devices and also allows you to set limits
and restrictions, not just for yourself but
also family members. iPhones are great,
but they shouldn?t consume your life.
Messages
This app benefits from new
Animojis, fully-customisable
?Memoji? characters and a wealth of fun
new camera effects and filters that you
can access straight from the Messages
app. Chatting has never been so fun!

iOS 11.4: stereo
pairs and multiroom audio
Finally get the most out of your HomePod!
Things we learned
this month
HomePod now
delivers an even
more immersive
listening
experience
throughout the home with
support for HomePod stereo
pairs and a new multi-room audio
system in iOS 11.4.
The update uses AirPlay 2 to play
music in any room and from any
room, move music from one room
to another or play the same song
everywhere using an iOS device,
HomePod, Apple TV or by asking
Siri. Stereo pairs two HomePods
together to create an even wider
soundstage, while multi-room audio
creates an effortless way for people
to stream music anywhere in
the home to different devices,
all in-sync.
HomePod is currently only available
in the UK, US and Australia, but now
adds France, Germany and Canada
to that list as of 18 June.
New data and privacy
website goes live
Apple news
Apple has launched a new data and privacy
website as GDPR regulations go live across
Europe. The main benefit of the site (https://
privacy.apple.com) is you can request all the personal
information Apple holds about your account, including
app usage, marketing preferences, iCloud and Apple
Music information. You can also amend details, deactivate
accounts and delete them. The service is limited to Apple
accounts registered in the European Union, Iceland,
Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland currently but
Apple will roll it out worldwide ?in the coming months?.

Apple is making its production greener
Apple news
Apple is at the forefront of a groundbreaking new way to
produce aluminium that releases oxygen rather than greenhouse
gases during the smelting process. Apple has partnered with
aluminium giants Alcoa Corporation and Rio Tinto Aluminum, and raised
$144 million for research and development. ?Apple is committed to
advancing technologies that are good for the planet and help protect it for
generations to come,? says Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?We are proud to be

If you are considering a smart suitcase go for one
with a removable battery pack as many airlines have
banned those with fixed power packs. The G-Ro Carryon Classic is a great example and whilst not cheap,
it will serve you well for many years. The ?Classic?
moniker suits this particular product very well. (1) Safe
and secure. The TSA locks will ensure that anyone who
wants to get to your precious Apple gear will have to work
extremely hard to do so. Consider the value of what you
carry in your case and you soon realise the benefits.
(2) Wheely clever. The wheels are impact-resistant and
are able to withstand a huge amount of punishment. This
makes the Carry-on Classic an excellent choice if you are
exploring far-flung terrain that contains more than a few
bumps. (3) It?s hard wearing. All of the materials in the
case are designed to serve you well over extended periods
and to last. It?s perfectly possible that this case will be your
travel companion for many years to come. (4) Charge
and go. Keeping your Apple gear charged, whether it be
an iPhone or an iPad or a Mac, is easy with this case. You
should never run out of charge again no matter where you
are or what you are doing.

Understand
any travel
restrictions
You should take time to be aware of the
various restrictions that you need to adhere
to before you travel. From weight and size
limits for airline baggage to the exact items
you are allowed to carry, a little planning
could avert a whole host of time-consuming
problems during your trip. We hope to help
you avoid the worst scenarios.
3 Batteries restricted?
If you are carrying your Apple laptop,
you may want to double-check the battery
rules. You can call the airline?s security team
if you are at all unsure.
1Weigh yourself
2 Prohibited items
4 Not so smart
5 Take what you need
Check the weight restrictions your
airline dictates, then weigh yourself on some
scales. Now weigh yourself holding the
suitcase and calculate the difference.
We will repeat the warning that if you
own smart luggage where the battery
cannot be easily removed, it will NOT be
allowed on the flight. Do not take it.
Locate the home page for your airline
and pay special attention to the items that
cannot be carried on the plane. A little
research will save you lots of time.
Only take what you need to save
weight and the potential for losing valuable
equipment. Will your iPad suffice in place of
your MacBook on your trip for your tasks?
Keep your devices charged
If you are carrying your Apple gear with you, power will
be of paramount importance. There are many ways to
keep iPhones, iPads and MacBooks charged without
adding too much extra weight and in some cases you
can charge multiple devices from one accessory. This is
one area that you will want to pay special attention to.

At the airport
Prepare for the long
wait at the airport
The wait at the airport can feel like forever
when you are looking forward to your trip or
can?t wait to get back home, but your trusty
iPhone can give you all of the entertainment
and interest you need to make it feel much
more bearable. Using the right apps wisely
can help a lot.
Importing movies
1Offline films
Netflix and similar services now let you
download selected films and TV shows so
that you can watch them anywhere. You
should do this before you leave for your trip.
2 Don?t stream
If you subscribe to services like Apple
Music you can download tracks to play
without an internet connection. This could
also save data roaming fees when abroad.
3 Gaming on the go
Don?t forget to install a few games for
those moments when you are unexpectedly
delayed. From two minutes to two hours,
they can help the time pass very quickly.

4 Light reading
A few eBooks will go a long way on
the beach, in the airport or anywhere else
when you need some downtime. Kindle and
iBooks both work exceptionally well.

Apps and services like Instapaper and

read anywhere. These work well on leisure
trips because they tend to be quick reads.

Protect
your data
It is always important to protect your
personal information, but when abroad
or travelling it is much more likely that
you may mislay your phone or laptop.
You should take adequate precautions
at all times and many of these will need
to be undertaken even before you leave.
The good news is that it is neither timeconsuming or difficult.
3 Encrypt your Mac
On your Mac, go to System
Preferences>Security & Privacy>FileVault
and follow the process to encrypt your Mac
disk. This will help protect all of your data.
1Wipe, restore and repeat 2 Where is everything?
If you are concerned that your iPhone
could be scanned at the airport, the nuclear
option is to wipe it and to restore from
iCloud at your destination. A last resort.
Make sure that Find My iPhone is
displaying all of your devices including Apple
Watches, MacBooks, AirPods etc. This
could be crucial when you really need it.
4 Two-way firewall
5 Private browsing
Enable inbound and outbound
firewalls while travelling in System
Preferences>Security & Privacy>Firewall.
You can turn it off on your return if you wish.
In some countries you may want to
consider using a private browser for internet
access if you are worried about your
accounts being monitored.
Conquer your fears!
Fear of flying is a major obstacle for many people and
can ruin or even prevent many trips from happening.
You can go the professional route and seek help over
many weeks or you can download an app which may
just help you enough to make the trip more pleasurable.
(1) Before you leave The ?At Home? section of the
Fofly app is a good place to start to prepare you for the
upcoming flight. The tips and advice included come
together to add some reassurance and will likely make
the experience just a little easier. (2) Relax completely
There is a section which includes various sounds to help
you relax before, during and after a flight. It is amazing how
the process of simply relaxing your mind and body can
help to counteract a fear. (3) The big test Head to the ?In

the air. Simply having this advice to hand can make a big
difference to how you feel and will make your iPhone feel
more important than ever. (4) Explore it all Check out all

take some trial and error to find the right advice for your
particular fear, but there is little doubt that it will help in
some way.

knowledge at
the ready
Understanding what awaits you in a new
country you are visiting will be crucial to
ensuring a successful or enjoyable trip. The
last thing you will want is to fall foul of the
regulations in a country and ruin the trip
when it could have been avoided with a tiny
bit of research. It takes minutes to prepare
before you leave.

A supplemental source of advice is
available at intelligent-protection.co.uk which
includes risk reports that are quick and easy
to read for most of the countries you are
likely to visit.

containing a complex array of information.
It covers everything from the geography to
government to transportation in a variety
of countries.
The 2017 electronics ban is something
you will want to familiarise yourself with if
you are taking your Apple gear with you.
Head to https://bit.ly/2LblvuE as a good
place to start.
Head over to gov.uk/foreign-traveladvice to find up-to-date security information
on more than 200 countries. This is one to
bookmark and make sure you refer to before
you travel abroad.
Your airline?s website should display
travel advice and also detail specific
restrictions for countries it serves. You
can also ring them if you are unsure
about anything.
Getting around
You will not want to be carrying maps with you when you
travel so we would advise you to install a few free and
commercial navigation apps to help you if you get lost in
an unfamiliar place. The reassurance and time saved
will make these more than worthwhile for any trips you
take in the future.

one single note which can then be replicated in
many more to create a complete trip manual.
Vital links
Useful images

web resource. Notes is
completely expandable.
Inserting images works
particularly well for trips.
From photos of the hotel
you are staying at to small

you can jot down useful
numbers and reminders
in seconds with just your

Turn data off
If you are unsure of the
charges you will incur when
abroad, you can turn off mobile
data before you leave to ensure
you have no bill shocks.
A Mi-Fi router can be a handy
accessory to carry with you
to connect multiple devices
to the internet. You may not
use it every day, but it can be
very useful.
Quick sketches
Save everything
Directions from Google
Maps can be saved as
links so you can store an
entire inventory ready for
travelling around each day.
A great time-saver.
Finding the right contract for use
at home can be difficult and it
becomes even more complex
when working out which one is
best for travelling abroad. There
are, however, some steps you
can take to ensure that you are
getting the best possible deal no
matter where in the world you
are travelling to.

1Check the extras 2 A new SIM?
Some providers offer
features that let you use your
phone abroad as part of your
home plan. You will pay no extra
roaming fees at all.
You can get a separate SIM
card, not locked to a contract,
for overseas travel. Some
providers offer very competitive
pricing for roaming data/calls.

A local SIM
You can also buy a local
SIM card when you arrive in your
destination airport. Just make
sure your iPhone is unlocked
and capable of using one.
Read the terms
Always read the terms and
conditions your mobile provider
publishes. There may be limits
to data usage, especially when
abroad, so check everything.
AirPods
The AirFly accessory lets you
connect your AirPods to any
traditional headphone jack.
Perfect for on the plane or in
the hotel room.
Stand it up
The Lazy Couch? slightly lifts
a MacBook to make it more
accessible and easier to work
with when away from home.
It?s also very portable when
carrying with you.

The TimePorter is the ideal
way to store and protect your
Apple Watch when travelling.
It?s stylish, beautifully made
and does the job it needs to
very well.

Extra things to remember
Keep organised
You may be travelling for pleasure, but that does not
mean that you shouldn?t prepare and keep yourself
organised. It may seem like a chore, but doing so will
ensure that you have more time to enjoy yourself and
not fall foul of potential setbacks that may occur. A little
planning will go a long way.
Prepare yourself
1The big reminders
2 A professional solution 3 Prepare your wallet
It is worth keeping a list of reminders
for just before you leave containing the
big things you need to remember such as
passport dates, airline tickets etc.
Consider using a more detailed planning
app like 2Do to organise the entire trip. You
will be able to keep a reference of everything
you need and avoid missing things.
Don?t forget other aspects such as
making sure that you have the cards and
passes you need stored in Apple Wallet.
They can help in every aspect of your trip.
1A software camera
2 Do something different
4 The best locations
5 A new camera?
Photography
when travelling
Your iPhone, and even your iPad, now
include superb cameras that will be able to
capture the important moments on any trip.
The convenience of being able to upload
to social networks and do so much more
with your images is a huge advantage, but
you can take things even further with some
apps and accessories.
There are countless camera apps
available for iOS of which Camera+ is just
one example. Many will give you much more
control over your photos as you take them.
3 A better lens
Accessories like the olloclip let you
add a better lens to your iPhone which can
create more detailed images. They are also
ultra portable and will not get in the way.
28

It is worth investing in an iPhone tripod
like the Manfrotto PIXI mini and other smaller
accessories that can help you capture
special places in all their glory.
CGH
Why not try to take a different kind of
snap? Slow Shutter can produce some
stunning results once you have got used
to how it works.
A GoPro or a DSLR camera will
potentially fit some parts of your trip better
than the iPhone, but for 99% of photos your
phone alone should suffice.
SFO
Leverage your
Apple Watch
The Apple Watch offers all of the time
tracking and fitness monitoring you need
during a normal day and when travelling,
but there are certain apps which will make
it feel even more essential when you are
travelling for business or pleasure. A few
new apps could offer a myriad of benefits
during any trip.
1What is close?
2 Money movements
3 Get around
4 Keep track
5 Check the weather
Citymapper can help direct you around
any of the supported cities directly from your
Apple Watch. It?s extremely convenient and
works better than most other offerings.
Yelp will help you find local coffee
houses and a myriad of other facilities and
businesses directly on your Apple Watch. It?s
a complete and convenient service.
App in the Air lets you manage boarding
passes and much more on your Watch plus
the subscription service lets you receive realtime flight status updates while flying.
XE Currency displays the latest currency
prices clearly within the smaller Apple Watch
screen and is ideal for those who need to
change money during a trip.
CARROT Weather is probably the best
Apple Watch weather app available today
and is ideal for checking conditions before
you head out for the day when abroad.
Choose your
gear wisely
Balance is key when deciding what laptop you need
for a trip. Getting the mix between size, power and
practicality is far from easy, but fortunately Apple offers
a variety of models that should suit the needs of anyone
with a trip on the horizon. (1) Size is key. From the
footprint of the Mac itself to the weight and depth, think
carefully about the Mac you are buying. If it does what you
need in terms of power, you then need to seriously consider
how practical it will be to carry. (2) An older device? It
may be that an older model is worth purchasing purely for
your trips. This will mean that you are not carrying a hugely
expensive device with you, adding peace of mind during
your trip. (3) Consider the conditions. If you are travelling
to a hot and sunny place, you will want a Mac with a screen
that works well in all conditions. A matte screen protector
could be a worthy investment if this is the case. (4) Keep
it running. Battery power should also be considered. For
days when you are travelling between meetings or when
on a flight, a long battery life could be crucial in making the
most of your Mac. Don?t forget the charger!

E
ach season brings plenty of unique photo opportunities,
from blossom and bluebells in spring to lush green foliage
in the summer. However, if you?re limited to photographing
a place at a particular time (while on holiday for example), then
you may only be able to capture that location during a specific
season. Fortunately Apple?s Photos app can fast-forward time
and allow you to convert a spring scene to an autumn one! By
selectively targeting the colours of green spring leaves you can
change their hue to an autumnal russet red.
For this tutorial we?ve supplied a spring shot to work with, but
you can apply these colour tweaking techniques to your own
images if you prefer.

Adjust
colour hue
Once you?ve sampled a
colour you can experiment
with different looks by
dragging the Hue slider
left or right. Bear in mind
that other examples of the
sampled colour will also
change their hue.
Choose a colour
You can target a specific
colour by ticking the
appropriate colour box.
Here we?re targeting the
original green colour of the
spring photo?s leaves. For
more complex colours you
can use the custom hue
eyedropper (see opposite).

Creative colour casts
To enhance your autumnal makeover
you can give the whole shot a warmer
look that complements the russet reds
of the leaves. Toggle open the Light
panel. Go to the Cast slider and drag
it right to around 0.15. This warms up
the shot. Or drag the Cast slider left to
make the colder blue lighting contrast
with the warm reds in the trees.

Luminance
The Luminance slider
lightens or darkens the
sampled colour. This is
useful if you want to create
a more dramatic sky. By
darkening blue skies you
can make clouds pop out
more in contrast.
Range
The targeted colour may
vary according to lighting
conditions (such as direct
sunlight and shade). To
include more versions of
the sampled colour in the
adjustment, drag the range
slider to the right.
To set a slider to a specific value you can double-click on the slider?s number
and type a new value into the box.
Step-by-step Make selective colour adjustments
1 Import file
2 Target a colour
3 Create richer reds
4 Expand the range
5 Target the yellows
6 Copy and paste
1 Choose custom hue
2 Respray!
Go to File>Import. Browse to select
our Season_start.jpg file. Click ?Review
for Import?. Double-click on the imported
thumbnail to enlarge it. Click ?Edit?.
Spring leaves tend to feature a range of
greens. To include more variations of green
in the colour hue change, increase the Range
slider to 1.30.
Toggle open the Selective Colour panel.
As the spring leaves are mostly green, click
on the green box. Drag the Hue slider left to
a value of -50 to turn green to red.
Green leaves often contain yellows too.
Click the Selective Colour panel?s Yellow box
and drop the Hue slider left to -15.00. Boost
Saturation to 30.
To create more vibrant looking autumn
leaves drag the Saturation slider right to a
value of around 55. Drop the Luminance
slider left to -20 for darker, richer reds.
Once you?ve perfected the autumnal
look choose Image>Copy Adjustments. You
can then turn any spring shot to autumn by
choosing Image>Paste Adjustments.
Adapting the
technique
As well as changing the seasons from
spring to autumn you can use Photo?s
selective colour adjusting tools in other
creative ways. You could check out how
you look with different hair colours before
committing to a new look. Or before
coughing up lots of cash to get your car
re-sprayed you can experiment with a
range of virtual paint-jobs courtesy of the
Selective Colour panel. Experiment by
downloading and importing our supplied
respray_start.jpg file.
For this technique it helps if there are no
similarly coloured objects in the scene. Grab
the Selective Colour panel?s eyedropper tool
and click on the car to sample its paintwork.
Drag the Hue slider to change the colour
of the sampled pixels. If there are some
similar colours, drag the Range slider right to
include them in the colour hue adjustment.

inal Cut Pro X has always enabled video professionals to
add text to the screen courtesy of its Titles tools. However
these titles were permanently burned onto the footage.
There was no easy way to create optional subtitles that viewers
could turn on and off when viewing your programme on DVD or
via YouTube. Fortunately the new Captions tool with Final Cut
Pro X 10.4 enables you to create closed captions that can be
toggled on and off. We?ll show you the workflow on how to add
captions to a typical talking head style interviewee, modify the
look of the text and export your subtitles in a format that can be
added to your video on destinations such as Vimeo (a site used
by many video professionals to showcase their work).

suitable for viewing on sites such as
Vimeo (or on DVD), you need to change
their format to CEA-608 (see Step 1).
The ITT format enables more control
over the look and position of your

the background video under the caption.
If there?s a problem with a caption bar?s
content it will turn red. This can occur if the
caption overlaps another. Tap Return to create
a new line if the top line is too long.
Click on the caption bar and choose Edit>
Copy. Place playhead at the start of the next
sentence and choose Edit>Paste. Type in the
next sentence. Fine-tune the length of caption.
Choose File>Share>Vimeo. The caption
track will be uploaded with the video. To export
captions to be embedded into a DVD track
choose File>Export captions. Click ?Export?.
Repeat the last step to add more captions

GarageBand
Apply an EDM-style filter sweep
Learn how to control the AutoFilter plugin with track
automation to achieve an effect so familiar in dance music
Difficulty

16
O
ften melodically simple and recursive in terms of
repetition, EDM or Electronic Dance Music tends to lean
on effects to add dynamism. One trick that you?ll be
familiar with is when dance tracks seem to fade or ?sweep? away,
going from very clear and prominent to almost like the song
has moved off into a distant room. This is achieved by applying
an EQ filter effect and, thoughtfully, GarageBand has a plugin
that can be applied to emulate this very technique. So in this
guide we show you how the AutoFilter plugin can be added to a
project Master Track before using automation curves to adjust
its Cutoff and Resonance controls. You can then follow the same
principle to achieve custom results synonymous with the genre!
Utilising the AutoFilter plugin can help you achieve some
cool EDM-style effects in your projects
Get to know AutoFilter
Cutoff/Resonance
Click the plugin to view its settings window and navigate the controls
AutoFilter
The settings for AutoFilter
start with a dropdown
menu of presets and then
the main controls for Cutoff,
Resonance, Intensity,
Waveform and Rate. These
can be manually set or
manipulated in-project
using track automation.
Waveform
and Rate
Waveform dictates the
?shape? of the envelope
automatically applied to
the filter, with ?Tri? being
triangular. Rate below
is then used to set the
frequency of the envelope?s
effect, with neither applied if
Intensity is zero.
36
187
Lowering the cutoff slider
blocks certain frequencies
to produce that muffled
sound. Raising resonance
amplifies higher frequencies
that when combined can
add pronounced howls.
Intensity
The intensity slider ranges
from zero to 100 and
dictates the strength of the
AutoFilter?s impact. The
higher settings produce
more noticeable phasing
peaks when enveloped.
Knowledge base
Filtering defined
When we apply an effect like the
AutoFilter, crucially we?re manipulating
EQ. We are effectively applying a digital
piece of gauze to the sound to only
allow its high or low frequencies to
pass through while blocking (cutoff) or
attenuating others. By combining this
with a resonance effect that amplifies,
we achieve a phaser-like result.
Plugins are used within GarageBand to add more sound processing to
projects and the AutoFilter can be found in the ?Filter? category of the menu.
Step-by-step Apply an EDM filter effect

5 Resonance slider
6 Show Automation
7 Cutoff curve
8 Resonance curve
9 Added Intensity
Starting with a looping pre-populated EDM
project of seven tracks, all containing Apple
Loops and Drummer Magnus, we navigate to
Track>Show Master Track from the top menu.
The first ?Cutoff? slider is set to 100 by
default, thus effectively being off. Reduce this
control manually during playback to preview
how it filters out EQ frequencies.
In the track header automation menu pick
Cutoff from Output and click three points on
the automation curve, dragging the middle one
down to swoop to 20 then back up to 100.
With Master Track selected, show the
Smart Controls with the B key. Click inside a
vacant slot from the Output plugin?s inspector
and pick Filter>AutoFilter from the menu.
Resonance situated below then amplifies
certain frequencies to add a swirling phaserlike effect to heighten the end result when used
in combination with Cutoff filtering.
Next select Resonance from the Output
category of the track header automation menu
and again click three points on the curve,
dragging the middle point up to around 70.
Hover over the middle of the added plugin
and click the middle button to have the floating
AutoFilter window show in the top corner and
survey the various slider controls.
We will use automation curves to move
these sliders, so pick Mix>Show Automation
or press the A key. We?ve also cycle looped the
end eight bars where the effect will span.
Lastly, we?ve selected Intensity from
Output>AutoFilter and again plotted three
points, dragging the middle one up to 15 to
complete the effect before playing to preview.

s a method of entering MIDI performance data, stepinput has been around as long as MIDI itself. You
might wonder then what merit it has in the current day
climate, but step editing is still a great way to program drum
parts, especially now that Logic ships with a large repository
of velocity-sensitive drum sounds just waiting to be found and
exploited. In fact, one of the main advantages of the Step Editor
over, say, the Piano Roll is the way in which you can pencil in
notes and their velocities at the same time.
You can use the Step Editor for anything from basslines
to synth parts, but it comes into its own as a way of quickly
programming dynamic and interesting drum beats, which is
what we?ll be focusing on in the steps that follow.
Rational grid
Knock up dynamic rhythms in
a heartbeat with the Step Editor
Pen width
This parameter sets the width
of each beat in the grid. It?s
purely a visual thing and has
no effect on the sound; it
merely makes it easier to
view individual beats at
higher resolutions.
The Step Editor is a great way to program Logic Pro?s
extensive selection of drum parts?
Name the lane
Grid resolution
Lane names usually
display as note pitches by
default. To rename a lane
to something more useful,
click the name in the lane
parameter box and type
over a new name.
Each lane can display
its own grid resolution,
making complex beats a
breeze to program. Just
select the lane, then pick
the desired resolution
value from the Grid menu.
Knowledge base
Changing lanes
The Step Editor is laid out in a similar
style to the main Tracks area, except
that it replace the tracks with ?lanes?.
Each lane is assigned to a single MIDI
note or continuous controller value ?
which means that the Step Editor isn?t
limited to just editing notes, but can be
used to sequence controllers such as
MIDI volume, pan and so on.

187
Beam me up
Each note is represented
in the grid by a vertical
beam, the height of which
indicates its velocity. This
is easily adjusted with
the Pointer tool, making
dynamic parts very quick
and easy to achieve.
You can open the Step Editor as a floating window by hitting Cmd+5 or
selecting the ?Open Step Editor? command from the Window menu.
Step-by-step Programming a beat in the Step Editor
1 Drum up a region
2 Open Step Editor
3 Select Lane Set

7 Ghost rider
8 Hats off
9 It?s a drag
On a new Software Instrument track in
Logic, load up Drum Kit>Detroit Garage from
the library pane. Ctrl-click on the track and
select ?Create Empty MIDI Region?.
Zoom in and drag the desired lanes
around vertically into the order you want them.
We?re going to use the Kick 1, SD1, Handclap
and Closed HH sounds here.
Add three other loud kick beats in the
positions shown above, then place three softer
?ghost? kick beats as shown, to mimic a human
player playing double beats.
Double-click the MIDI region to open the
Edit pane. The Step Editor is accessed by
clicking the rightmost of the three tabs at the
top of the pane.
Select the Pencil tool as the secondary
tool. This will be used to enter note events on
the grid, and is accessed by holding down the
Command key.
Next, place a loud note in the first slot of
the closed HH lane, a medium note two slots
later, and two soft ones either side. Then copy
and paste these four notes to fill the bar.
In the Region box in the top left, set the
Lane Set parameter to ?GM Drum Kit?. This will
create horizontal lanes for all available drum
sounds in the Detroit Garage Kit.
Click with the Pencil tool to enter a kick
drum note in the first grid slot. We need the
velocity of this note to be high, so drag it up to
near its maximum height with the Pointer tool.
Add snares and claps on beats 1.2 and
1.4, then switch SD1?s lane grid to 32nd-notes.
Create a dragged snare effect by pencilling in
soft, 32nd ghost notes in the positions shown.

T
here have been few major changes to Safari on the Mac,
but each time Apple updates macOS, and OS X before,
there have been minor tweaks to the browser that add
features or improve it in some way. It evolves gradually and new
features are often slipped in without people noticing until they
accidentally discover something on a menu and wonder when
it was added. Among the features you may have missed is an
upgrade to Safari bookmarks. At one time they were a random
collection in the order in which they were added. Now they can
be sorted, which makes bookmarks easier to find. Another
feature you may not have noticed is Search Results SnapBack

Search Results
Snapback
Search Results Snapback is probably one
of the most overlooked Safari features. It is
not new, but many people don?t even know
it is there. It sort of temporarily bookmarks
web search pages, such as Google so that
you can follow links from search results
and instantly return to the search page
with a hotkey. You can be ten pages on
and still jump straight back to the results.
This only works with Google search and
not with Bing or DuckDuckGo.
1 Search with Google
Go to the Google home page in Safari
and search for a topic. (Don?t search from
the address box at the top.) When the search
results appear, click them and follow the links.
2 SnapBack to search
No matter how many links you?ve
followed, press Option+Cmd+S to jump
straight back to the results. This SnapBack
can also be accessed on the History menu.

ho remembers Time Capsule? Some people may in
fact still be using one and it is a wireless AirPort router
with a built-in hard disk drive that can be used to store
Time Machine backups. It is still on the Apple website (www.
apple.com/uk/airport-time-capsule) but it hasn?t been updated
in five years and rumours suggest it is about to be discontinued.
What alternative external storage can you use for backing up
the Mac using Time Machine or other backup software once
Time Capsule is gone? Just about any USB drive, whether it is
designed for the Mac or PC. You just need to prepare it and you
are in luck because we have a great guide showing exactly how
to prepare a plain vanilla cheap USB drive for storing backups.

Erase and
partition
Select a drive in Disk
Utility?s sidebar and click
?Erase? to prepare it for use
with a Mac. It can be used
straightaway, but there
are advantages to
partitioning it using the
?Partition? button.
Turning on Time Machine provides piece of mind that all of
your Mac files will be safely backed up
Partitioning
scheme
The type of partitioning
scheme used when
preparing USB drives is
important. Non-Mac USB
drives can be used on the
Mac for backup purposes
if they are partitioned using
the GUID Partition Map.
Knowledge base
Boot from external drives
With Time Machine you will never lose
a file and every hour it backs them up
to the USB drive. However, if the Mac?s
internal drive fails, it is impossible to
start the Mac and access your files.
Cloning the drive with SuperDuper!
enables the Mac to be booted by
pressing Option just after powering on
and you can still access files.
44
187
Create partitions
A drive?s storage can
be divided into sections
called partitions. Click the
?+? and ??? icons to set the
number. Each partition
works like a separate drive
in Finder and can be used
for different purposes.
Disk format
Most USB drives use the
ExFAT file format because
it is compatible with Apple
Macs, Windows and Linux
PCs. However, for backups
they must be reformatted
as Mac OS Extended
(Journaled) before use.
USB drives do not need to be Mac-dedicated ones and any drive will do if
you prepare it for use on the Mac using Disk Utility.
Step-by-step Back up to USB drives
1 Select the drive
2 Erase the drive
3 Partition the disk
4 View the partitions
5 Open Time Machine
6 Choose the drive
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder
and select the external drive in the sidebar.
This has a single partition and is formatted
with ExFAT for PC compatibility.
The external USB drive has two
partitions which appear as two drive icons on
the desktop. They can have different uses.
Select each drive in the sidebar for details.
Select the drive, not the partition, and
then click ?Erase?. Set the format to ?Mac OS
Extended (Journaled)? and the Scheme to
?GUID Partition Map?. Enter a name too.
Open System Preferences and open
Time Machine. If a disk is already set, click it
and remove. Otherwise click ?Select Backup
Disk? to choose the drive and partition.
If you don?t want to use the whole drive
for Time Machine backups, click ?Partition?
and then click the ?+? icon below the circle.
Drag the white dot to set the size.
The partitions on the USB drive appear
as separate drives and either can be selected
to store Time Machine backups. Click ?Use
Disk? and tick the two checkboxes to finish.
Clone the disk
Time Machine is not the only way to
back up the Mac?s internal storage and
alternative backup applications can be
used instead. SuperDuper! (from www.
shirt-pocket.com) can be used for free with
a few minor limitations that won?t affect the
backup we perform here. The best feature
is that the USB drive is bootable. Hold
down Option just after powering on the
Mac for the menu, then plug in the USB
drive and select it to boot from it.
1 Source and destination 2 Set the options
Select the Mac?s internal drive in the
source drive list (left) and select destination or
target disk (right). The destination only needs
to be big enough to store all the files.
Click ?Options? and choose what to do
on successful completion. Click ?OK? and
then ?Copy?. It can take up to a couple of
hours depending on the Mac and drive.

here is more than one way to find files on the Mac and
Spotlight is an obvious tool, but it is more of a general
search that includes Wikipedia entries, web video, and so
on. A few files are found, but it is far from comprehensive. Siri is
a bit better at finding files, but you may be in a place where you
don?t want to be heard talking to your computer.
Finder?s search facilities are still the best and it is possible to
build some very complex search functions to track down the files
you need. There is a lot more to searching than simply typing a

than or greater than a certain size. Click the
menu and select ?is greater than?.
If there are too many files and you
cannot see the one you want, click the ?+?
below the search box and click ?Name? in the
filter that appears. Select ?Other? in the menu.
If you still can?t see the file you want, just
add another filter. For example, click the ?+?
icon and then choose Name, contains, and
then enter a word in the box like this.
Improve your
searches
The key to finding files is to create the right
filters and select the appropriate attributes
to search for. Different files have different
attributes, so a photograph may have
aperture information, focal length, and
ISO speed embedded within the files and
these can be searched for. A music file
has authors, composers, genres and so
on. All can be searched for and here
we take a quick look at searching for
specific types of music using advanced
Finder filters.
Select your home folder in the Finder
sidebar and then enter ?.m4a? into the search
box at the top. Finder suggests Apple MPEG4 audio in the dropdown list. Select it.
If you want to find all music by a certain
composer. Click the ?+? icon to add a filter,
click ?Name? and ?Other?. Select ?Composer?
and enter the name into the search box.

o you frequently type the same text in documents, notes,
emails and so on? It can be tedious and slow to keep
typing the same email reply over and again or adding the
same closing message at the end of every letter or note. There
are many occasions where we repeat ourselves and saving the
text so that it can be copied and pasted saves time and effort.
Where do you store the snippets of text and email responses
though? A free app in the Mac App Store called Text Blocks is a
convenient place and it allows you to store multiple text blocks
and then insert them in emails, Notes, Pages and TextEdit
documents and other places. It is a great time saver.
Text Blocks is a convenient place to store snippets of text
that you are likely to use regularly
Step-by-step Save text blocks and insert them
1 Create a file
Download and install Text Blocks from
the Mac App Store. The first time it is run, click
?Create a New Document?. Each one can store
up to ten blocks of text in the free app.
2 Add text blocks
There are no text blocks at first and you
must make some. There are several ways to do
this and the simplest is to click the ?+? button in
the top right corner of the app.
4 Advanced text blocks 5 Fields and actions
Create a new text block and this time click
?Fields? in the top right. In some circumstances,
such as emails, Text Blocks can automatically
work out the name. Add ?First Name?.
48
187
Here we added two fields to a block
of text, First Name and Date, and these are
automatically filled in when text is used. Add
whatever fields you need for the email reply.
3 Enter some text
An editor window is displayed into which
you should enter text you often type, like a
common response to an email message. Enter
a title and a tag and then click ?Save?.
6 Use Text Blocks
Open Mail and click ?Reply?. Select all the
text with Cmd+A then go to the Mail>Services
menu. Select ?Reply with Text Blocks? (Note
the option to create text blocks too).
Our tutorial looks at creating standard replies for emails, but Text Blocks
works with Pages, Notes, TextEdit and other apps as well.
The Text Blocks interface
All the essential Text Blocks features
Create or reply
When text in an email,
note or word processor
is selected, there are two
options on the Services
menu. The ?Reply? option
inserts text from Text
Blocks and ?New? creates
a new text block.
Title and tags
The title and tags help you
find text blocks. The free
app only allows ten blocks,
but 1,000 are possible with
a paid upgrade and then
the title and tags become
useful when searching.
Text Fields
Text Blocks is more than a
simple text expander and
these fields adapt to the
text being replaced. They
are most useful for email
where they automatically
get the person?s name
being emailed.
Knowledge base
Text Blocks service
Select text
There are text expander utilities that
can work with a keypress or replace
an abbreviation with a longer block of
text. Even macOS itself can substitute
shortcuts for full text. However, Text
Blocks is a text service that does more
than replace text, it can use fields and
actions to customise the text on the fly,
which is more useful.
Text must be selected in
order for Text Blocks to
be used. If a text block
contains fields, you must
select the whole email
text with Cmd+A,
otherwise a single word
can be selected.
7 Choose the text
The Text Blocks window appears and all
your text blocks are listed. Find the one you
want to use and then double-click it to open it.
Use the search function if you need to.
8 Check and copy
We chose the email response that
includes fields. Notice that the fields have
automatically been filled in from the email
message. Click ?Copy? to copy the text.
9 Paste and send
Text Blocks disappears and the copied
text is on the clipboard. Press Cmd+V to paste
it in. This was a short block of text and it can
be much longer and more complicated.

T
he amount of time
we spend on our
iPhones idly whiling
away the hours could
be spent in a more constructive
manner by downloading the
right apps. The App Store is
packed with apps that help you
save money ? be it slashing
pounds off your weekly
shop, finding the best deals
on items you want to buy or
getting discounts off days out
and events ? but what about
actually making you money?
By mining down a little
deeper into the App Store
you can discover apps that
can actually make you lovely
lucre. And, by entering the right
keywords the App Store will
present a selection of similarlythemed apps ? so even if one
isn?t to your liking then you can
always try others to find the
money-making apps that work
best for you.
Over the following pages
we hand-pick the best apps
for helping you earn money
through your iPhone, essential
apps for selling your unwanted
gear (are you aware of just how
easy it is to sell items in the
latest version of the eBay
app?) and a selection of fun
apps that allow you to actually
win money.
While we can?t promise that
you?ll get rich quick through
these apps, they may at least
change your iPhone habits
for the better and enable you
to earn some decent pocket
money on the side.
Getting started
Want to start earning money with apps?
Then here are our top tips for getting started.
1 Smart searching
Knowing what to look for in the App
Store is key because the money-making
apps are quite hard to find while browsing
through the general categories. Enter
keywords such as ?Win?, ?Sell? or ?Surveys?
into the search field to find them.
2 Create new account
We don?t just mean within the actual
apps themselves, but also make a point
of creating a new email account to use
for registering to the various services to
minimise the amount of spam going to your
primary account.
3 Perseverance
Earning money through apps takes time
because you usually have to earn a certain
amount of points/credits etc before you can
redeem them. Setting up a PayPal account
is essential as this will become your main
portal for withdrawing.

Though you?re never going to get
rich quick this way, using apps is a
good way to earn pocket money by
performing easy-to-do tasks that
require very little activity or mental
input. What we would definitely advise
is that you create a new email address
to use when registering for the various
services so that your primary accounts
aren?t bombarded with spam and the
details that you give out in surveys
don?t necessarily have to be accurate.

BEST APPS
For selling
goods
The surest way of making money
through apps is to use them to sell your
unwanted items ? and that couldn?t
be easier using your iPhone. Apps
such as eBay and musicMagpie take
all of the hassle out of listing items
by allowing you to use your iPhone
to scan barcodes form the items
themselves to fill in most of the details
for you. And even social network apps
such as Facebook and Instagram
can be used to get your gear into
the local marketplace. Sadly, you still
have to package the items up ready
for dispatch, but then there are some
things your iPhone just can?t do? yet.

Gumtree
Facebook
This is the
most popular
app for turning
unwanted items into

images. So simple.
This service isn?t
just restricted
to music: you
can sell DVDs, books
and games as well. All
you have to do is choose

scan the barcode and
you will be offered a
price. Then just complete
the transaction and post
your items to be credited

you get might not be as
much as you?d hoped,
but you are guaranteed
the cash at least.
Gumtree differs

selling services
because your items are
listed locally, so buyers
can collect. Selling your
items through the app is
quick and easy ? just tap
?Post? and then you can
add in all of the basic info

step lets you choose
your location as well as a

Get more chances to win in HQ
For
winning
money
As the questions get progressively more brutal in HQ, having an extra life to effectively
buy back into the contest is a huge way to increase your chances of winning. Here?s
how to earn one?
As the saying goes, you
don?t get anything in life
for free. However, this
was coined before the
advent of the iPhone
and its many apps for
helping you do just that.
Amazingly, apps such as
HQ and Cash Show let
you win money, no strings
attached, simply by
answering trivia questions
like your own personal
gameshow. Other apps,
such as Lucky Day,
provide cash incentives
for coming back every day
to rub off virtual scratch
cards. You?re not going
to get minted but you
can still grab a modest
amount of pocket money.
1 Your profile page 2 Get more lives
Between quizzes your main

This tells you when the next

Tap on ?Get More? in the

Here?s how it works?
HQ ? Live Trivia Game Show
The HQ Live Trivia Game is slickly presented and
lots of fun. The questions start off very easy but
soon get harder when a great degree of guesswork and
luck is needed to progress. There are usually two games
every day and you must have the app loaded before the
quiz starts in order to play. You?ll then be asked 12 general
knowledge questions with multiple choice answers and if
you get them all right you?ll win a share of the jackpot.
Lucky Day
Free to download and with no in-app
purchases or money being deposited,
Lucky Day offers daily scratch cards, lotto and
raffle games for a chance to win real money. The
trade-off is that you have to watch intermittent
adverts but this is a small price to pay as within
minutes we had won a dollar and as soon as you
accumulate $10 you can cash out to PayPal.
Cash Show
Much like HQ, this is a live trivia game
in which you have to answer questions
correctly to be in with a chance of winning money.
The format is slightly different in that you have to
answer warm-up questions before qualifying for
the prize questions, but the user-base is smaller
and the games themselves never clash with HQ,
so you can play them in tandem.

calendar along with your email, and so on.
In this guide we show you all the different tasks you can
perform using the Dock, from adding apps and showing recent
apps to running multiple apps. Most of the examples work on
most iPads, although an iPad Air 2 or newer is needed for Split
View. Get more from your iPad by mastering these tips.

Slide Over
This floating window is
a Slide Over because it
slides over the top of the
others and it can be on the
left or right. Slide an icon
in the Dock up onto
the screen.
Your iPad Dock is essential for multitasking as you can use
it to implement Slide Over and Split View?
Split View
This app is being used in
Split View. Swipe down
on a Slide Over or drag a
Dock icon up the screen
then a little way down
again to open it in
Split View.

The Dock on the iPad looks
superficially like the Dock on the Mac,
but the similarities are only skin deep.
Underneath they are very different.
The right side of the Mac?s dock shows
running apps whereas on the iPad it
shows recent apps, which may or may
not be running. Mac Dock icons show
menus, but the iPad does not.
When two apps are in Split View you can drag an app from the Dock and
drop it on either of the running apps to replace them.

2 Add more apps
3 Configure dock settings
4 Drag recent apps
5 Remove recent apps
6 Create Slide Overs
7 Use Slide Overs
8 Use Split View
9 Master three apps
The Dock on the iPad is very similar to the
Dock on the Mac and at its simplest level it is
used to start apps. Tap an icon in the Dock to
open an app, but there is more.
If you want to make an often-used app
permanent, drag it from the recent apps area
on the right over to the left of the vertical divider
and drop it in the permanent area.
Drop the app to open it in a panel on
the right which allows you to use it while still
viewing the other app in the background. Press
and slide it left or right to move it.
Press and drag an icon on the screen and
as it hovers over the Dock the other icons shift
around to make space for it. Drop it to add it.
Up to 13 apps can be in the dock.
Long-press on an app in the Dock and
apps on the right jiggle with ??? icons on them.
Press the ??? to remove an app from the
recently used apps list on the right.
Another way to use two apps is to use
Split View. Press an app in the Dock and slide
your finger up and to the right, then slide it
down and let go. It snaps in place.
Go to Settings>General>Multitasking &
Dock. Enable ?Show Suggested and Recent
apps?. This adds three spaces at the right side
of the Dock for recent apps you have used.
It is possible to work on two apps at
the same time on the iPad with a Slide Over.
Open one app, like Safari, then press and drag
another app up the screen from the Dock.
This is probably the hardest trick to
master, but after creating a Split View screen
with two apps, drag a third from the dock up
the screen to create a Slide Over.

Tell Siri more
about yourself
Educate Siri by ensuring it has access to enough
useful information about you and your family

S
iri can answer many questions but when it deals
with those of a personal nature, it isn?t always
on the button. It may not know who your partner
or parents are and it may come unstuck if you?re asking
about your workplace, school or home. Yet Siri is clever
and it can learn. You just have to give it the right input and
know when to put it right.
In this tutorial, then, we look at how you can educate
Siri and feed it the right information. We also touch on the
settings you need to pay attention to. You can correct Siri
on the fly, particularly when it comes to pronunciations.
Should Siri mispronounce a name, for example, let it
know (?You?re pronouncing [name] wrong?). You can
then correct it verbally and choose from the sounds
that appear.
Correcting and educating Siri is essential if your digital
personal assistant is to understand more about you?
Step-by-step Create and use your profile
1 Launch Phone app
Open the Phone app and tap the
?Contacts? icon. If you have previously
created your own profile, select it. Otherwise
tap the ?+? in the top right-hand corner.
62
187
2 Fill in the form
Now start to fill in your personal details,
starting with your full name. Include the name
that you would prefer Siri to know you by if it
is different to your real one.
3 Add a phone number
Scroll down and keep adding information
such as your phone number. Tap the word
?home? next to this to change to other types
of number. These range from mobile to work.
Is Siri struggling to recognise your voice? Go to Settings>Siri & Search and
turn ?Listen for Hey Siri? off and back on again to restart the setup process.
Connect third-party apps
Siri works well with some third-party apps so make
sure information is being passed on by them
Compatible apps
Go to Settings>Siri &
Search and scroll to the
bottom part of the screen
to see a list of apps that can
feed information to Siri.
Change the voice
Go further up the screen
and you can personalise
Siri further, changing
the accent to American,
Australian and British and
altering the gender.
Suggestions
?Search & Siri Suggestions?
means info from Siri can
appear in Search, Look Up
and Keyboard. Siri learns
from your use of these apps
and makes suggestions.

If you want Siri to be able to make use
of your current location, then you must
ensure that Location Services are
turned on. You do this by opening the
Settings app and selecting ?Privacy?.
Tap ?Location Services? and move the
slider to green. You can then go down
the list and indicate which apps should
have access and which ones shoudn?t.
4 Include relationships
Another important field is relationships.
By default, it starts with ?mother? but tap this
word to choose a different label. You can
select ?Add Related Name? to add more.
More advanced apps have
the option ?Use With Siri?
which you can toggle on or
off. Ensuring it?s activated
with Uber, for example,
means it can be used in Siri:
you can book a car without
opening the app.
5 Add addresses
Now add an address (there are options
for home, work and other) and an email
(home, work, iCloud, other). Simply flesh the
card out as much as possible and tap ?Done?.
6 Use the profile
Now select the card for use by Siri.
Simply go to the Settings app and select ?Siri

Notes
Import files from
Evernote into Notes
Ditch Evernote and import its files into the
Notes app on your iOS device instead
Difficulty

O
ne of the most improved apps in recent years is
Notes which today is one of the most powerful
tools of its kind. It has made drawings a key part
of its offering, introduced vast improvements to its text
formatting, added support for tables and thrown in lines
and grids for good measure. With pinned notes and great
Pencil integration on the iPad, it stands to reason that you
may want to use it more often.
But what if you?ve already got a bunch of notes
elsewhere, most notably Evernote? Well, Apple has made
it easy to import files exported from that third-party app.
What?s more you can do so in one go, with the .enex file
containing all of your selected notes which are then neatly
formatted and placed in a folder for later organisation.
Here?s how it?s done?
As the Notes app is now so good it makes sense to import
all of your files from other note-taking apps
Step-by-step Import notes on your iPhone
1 Select your notes
The iPhone lets you import Evernote
Export files (.enex). To generate these, use
the Windows or Mac Evernote desktop app.
Select your notes.
64
187
2 Export them
Still in Evernote, go to File and select
?Export Notes?. Give the file a name, select a
location to save it to and ensure the format is
set to .enex before clicking ?Save?.
3 Email to yourself
Now you need a way of getting the
notes from your computer to your iPhone.
The easiest way for this is to attach the .enex
file to an email before sending it to yourself.
Saved your .enex file into iCloud Drive from your computer? Import it via Files
in iOS 11. Find the file, touch and hold, select Share and ?Add to Notes?.
Organise your imported notes
Once your notes are safely within the Notes app on your
iOS device, you can move them to other folders
View attachments
Search for attachments by
tapping this icon. Any images,
videos, drawings, websites,
scans and documents added
to your notes will appear here.
Hold an attachment to show
the accompanying note.
Imported Notes
Each .enex file is able to hold
many notes and all of these
will be placed within your
Imported Notes folder (it will
be created as soon as you
begin importing).
Search for notes
If you need to find a note
quickly and you have imported
lots of them, typing keywords
into this search engine should
soon locate what you?re after.
Knowledge base
Other note formats
By using the Notes app on your Mac,
you can import a wider range of files
including .rtf, .rtfd, .html and .txt. To
do this, open Notes on your Mac and
click File>Import. Select a file to import
and tick ?Preserve folder structure on
import? to keep the notes organised.
Click ?Import? and they?ll appear within
a new folder called Imported Notes.
4 Open Mail app
Now open the Mail app on your iPhone
and find the email containing the .enex file.
Touch and hold this file until you see the
share menu and tap the icon ?Add to Notes?.
Swipe left
When you swipe left on a note,
you are given the option to
lock, move or delete it. Tap
the folder icon and you?ll be
taken to a screen that lets you
tap another folder. It will then
be moved.
5 Agree to import
You will be prompted to import the
notes into the Notes app. Tap ?Import Notes?
and wait while the notes are copied over. The
prompt disappears when complete.
6 Read your notes
Open the Notes app. The notes you
have selected and sent from Evernote will be
placed in their own folder called ?Imported
Notes?. Tap this to view and read them..

ver the course of your iPhone?s life, you?re likely to
take many photographs and videos. But what if
you decide ? for whatever reason ? that you want
to delete the lot? There is no ?Select All? button but that
doesn?t mean you can?t do it. Instead, you need to make
use of a little quirk of iOS 10 onwards.
It allows you to highlight every photo and video in one
fell swoop before sending them to the trash. It also works
well if you need to delete far more items than you want to
keep: you could highlight them all and then untick those
you wish to retain which should save you time. Either way,
it is worth bearing in mind the next time you?re faced with
that task of pruning your media. And for good measure,
we look at recovering accidentally removed items too.
Batch deleting photos and videos is handy for freeing up
space on your device quickly?
Step-by-step Quickly remove photos and videos
1 Open Photos app
Launch the Photos app on your iPhone
and select the Albums tab at the bottom of the
screen. Now tap the album called ?All Photos?
? this contains every one of your images.
66
187
2 Tap Select button
All your images should now be displayed
on the screen as thumbnails. Tap the button
marked ?Select? in the top right-hand corner.
Get ready to make your initial selections.
3 Swipe bottom images
Swipe a finger ? or, preferably, your
thumb (it?s easier) ? across the bottom four
images of the album. Don?t lift your finger (or
thumb): keep it on that fourth image.
You can also remove all photos by resetting your iPhone via Settings>
General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. Backup or proceed to delete.
Recover deleted images
Here?s how to recover or permanently delete images
Recently deleted
This is the Recently
Deleted folder which you
will find by opening the
Photos app and tapping
the Albums button in the
bottom right-hand corner
of the screen.
Select images
In the top-right corner
of the screen you will
ordinarily see a ?Select?
button. This changes to
?Cancel? once you have
tapped it.
Delete items
After tapping ?Select?, you
can opt to press ?Delete
All? to finally remove every
image. Or, tap certain
images and tap ?Delete? to
only remove those.

Photos in iCloud
Recover images
If you have iCloud Photo Library turned
on (via Settings>Your name>iCloud>
Photos>iCloud Photo Library), then
every photo or video you take via iOS
will be automatically retained in iCloud.
Similarly, if you delete a photo or image
in iOS, it will be removed from iCloud.
Bear this in mind when clearing such
items from your device.
4 Tap the top
With your finger still down, tap the section
at the top of the screen that says ?4 Photos
Selected? using a different finger. As you do
this, the screen jumps to the top.
Should you decide you
don?t want to delete every
image, tap ?Recover All? (or
select specific images and
tap ?Recover?). Be quick,
though: each thumbnail
indicates when it will be
permanently deleted.
5 Tap the trash
You should find that every photograph
and video has been selected which is much
quicker than selecting each one individually. To
remove them, tap the trash can icon.
6 Fully delete
The images are sent to the Recently
Deleted folder in the Albums tab so you may
want to ensure they are permanently removed
(see above for details).

Take a break from
YouTube videos
Have you ever visited YouTube to watch one video and
found yourself sucked in for hours? Help is at hand

A
lthough you?d expect YouTube to want us to
devour as many videos as possible, the current
push to improve our digital wellbeing has
prompted it to encourage healthy habits. This may strike
some as a little odd ? after all, YouTube has caused the
problem in the first place to some extent by introducing
autoplaying videos. But for anyone even mildly addicted to
the app, it should be seen as welcome news.
It works by prompting you to stop viewing after a set
period of time while giving you control over how long you
want to binge on videos for before being prodded to take
a breather. It?s certainly very easy to set up, allowing you
to receive a notification after as little as 15 minutes or as
many as three hours, making it a feature that?s well
worth exploring.
You can now set YouTube to remind you to take a break,
which can be handy for breaking its hypnotic lure?
Step-by-step Receive prompts to stop watching videos
1 Update the app
First of all, ensure you?re using the latest
version of YouTube (13.17 onwards) by visiting
the App Store on your iPhone. Note this
feature is not yet available for iPad.
68
187
2 Select profile image
Now open YouTube. By default, you can
watch videos for as long as you want without
being prompted to stop. To alter that, tap your
profile image in the top-right corner.
3 Open the Settings
The function to enable and disable a
reminder to stop watching is located within
the settings of the YouTube app itself. So on
the menu which now appears, tap ?Settings?.
In the coming months, YouTube will introduce a feature that will show your
daily average watch time and the exact amount of minutes and hours viewed.
How the timer works
It?s worth knowing just when the timer starts and
stops so that you can better control your viewing
Closing a video
The timer will pause when
a video you?re currently
watching is closed. When
you then open another
video, the app will make
a note and kickstart the
timer again.
Watch offline
If you are watching a
YouTube video offline or if
you are casting it to your
television, then the timer
will not run. You must be
online and watching on
your iPhone.
Pausing a video
When you pause a video
you are watching online in
YouTube, the timer pauses.
It resumes when you begin
watching again, and resets
if the video is paused for
more than 30 minutes.

notifications throughout the day?
You can now combine the lot into a
daily digest that you only receive at a

4 Take a break
You will see an option at the top of the
screen labelled ?Remind me to take a break?.
It will say ?Never? by default so tap this to view
the reminder options available to you.
As soon as you press the
home button and close
the YouTube app, the
timer will reset. This also
happens if you log out of
your account, or switch
accounts or devices.
5 Make a choice
Here you?ll see a number of frequencies,
allowing you to set reminders for every 15, 30,
60, 90 or 180 minutes. Tap the time at which
you want to be prompted and tap back.
6 Watch YouTube
Exit the Settings by tapping ?X? and begin
watching YouTube videos. After the time
period you set, a reminder will appear on the
screen. To continue watching, tap ?Dismiss?.

3D Touch iPhone functions
3D Touch opens up new ways of accessing features in iPhone apps. How many do you use?
E
ver since the iPhone 6S the screen on
the phone has responded to two levels of
pressure. There is a light tap which acts
like taps normally do and opens apps, selects
menus and buttons, and there is a firm press
which activates 3D Touch. What happens next
depends on the app but it usually gives access
to functions that would normally take several
taps and navigation through multiple screens.
To configure 3D Touch on the iPhone go
to Settings>General>Accessibility>3D Touch.
Turn it on and drag the slider to your preferred
position. 3D Touch can be implemented
anywhere by apps and there is no obvious
indication if a firm press will do anything
different to a light press. Just try it and see.

ne of the most useful features of iOS is the facility
to track and locate family members (or anyone
else who chooses to share their location with
you) in the Messages app. Picture the scene, one of your
children is out with friends, they get separated and are
unsure of how to get home. No problem ? as long as they
have Location Services turned on and share their location
with you, you can stay in touch via the Messages app and,
without having to leave that app, see their exact location
pinpointed on a map and then get step-by-step directions
straight to them.
It?s an incredibly useful service and allows you to track
the movements of family members without them even
realising that you are tracking them. The map data is also
updated in real time, so if they are on the move you will be
able to see this and the directions on how to get to them,
if you are using them, will be updated as they move.
As long as the Location Services option is enabled you will

here is much to enjoy about Apple Music,
such as the amount of musical choice to
stream, creating playlists and downloading
tracks to listen to offline. And if you fancy a good
ol? fashioned sing-along then it can also display
lyrics to your favourite tracks. Actually getting
the lyrics to be displayed has proved challenging
for many of you so note that it is important that
you meet the following criteria: you can only
obtain the song lyrics if you are connected to
the internet and subscribe to Apple Music, and
if they contain explicit words then you will need
to change your restrictions settings to view them

Apple Watch
Force your Apple
Watch to back up
Although the Watch automatically backs up, there may
be occasions when you want to manually do so
Difficulty
Time needed
20
O
ne of the best things about Apple Watch is that it
automatically backs up your data to a connected
iPhone. But it also one of the worst things. First
of all, backups appear to be rather infrequent (they are
certainly not every day) and there is no clear way to
manually force the Watch to copy your data to your phone
? or anywhere else for that matter.
Instead, there is this workaround, as painful and timeconsuming as it ends up becoming. The original intention
for this feature is to ensure that all of your data is safe
when you look to sell, upgrade or give away your Watch,
allowing you to easily port it to a new model. But it does
work if you intend to retain your Watch. If you do, then
you?ll need to restore the backup to your Watch once it
has been created. That?s because the process involves
wiping everything from your Watch. But it?s worth the
hassle if you have data that you really want to keep.
This method of forcing a backup of your Apple Watch is a
little extreme, but it certainly gets results?
Step-by-step Back up your Apple Watch
1 Wear your Watch
Apple Watch automatically backs up to
your iPhone but this doesn?t happen daily. You
can force a backup, however, so first ensure
the Watch and iPhone are in Bluetooth range.

everything from your Watch. We?re erasing the

Now scroll down to the bottom of the
screen and select Reset. Again, to reiterate,
this forced back-up is mainly intended for use
if you?re selling or passing on your Watch.
When you use your iPhone to set up a Watch, it will ask if you want to use
any of the backups you have previously created.
Verify your Apple Watch backup
After you have forced your Watch to back up to
your iPhone, check everything worked as planned
Settings app
Launch the Settings app
on your iPhone and reach
this screen by tapping
General>iPhone Storage
before looking for and
tapping Watch in the latter
section of the display.
Delete backups
We wouldn?t recommend
doing this unless you really
want to but you can tap
?Delete App? to remove all
of the data ? including the
backup ? from the iPhone.
Docs & Data
Here, the backup you have
just created should be
displayed. You?ll see the
name of your Watch, its
size and type, the date the
backup was created and
the data size.
Knowledge base
Create a copy in iCloud
Once you have your Watch data safe
on your iPhone, you may want to
ensure there?s a second backup by
sending it to iCloud. Open the Settings
app on your iPhone, tap your Apple
ID at the top of the screen, select
iCloud>iCloud Back up and tap ?Back
Up Now?. Everything on your iPhone
including the Watch data will be stored.
4 Erase content
Tap the option ?Erase Apple Watch
Content and Settings? at the top of the screen.
You?ll then understandably be prompted to
confirm that you want to do this so go ahead. .
Deep Sleep
As if to underline how
infrequently the Watch
backs up, the one we have
just made is dated 2018
but the entries beneath are
from early and late 2017
and 2016.
5 Enter password
Enter your Apple ID password. The next
stage will unpair your Apple Watch, remove
it from your account, disable Activation Lock
and remove Find My Watch.
6 Unpairing Watch
Now simply wait while the Watch unpairs
from your iPhone. As it does so, a backup will
be created and this will be safely stored on
your iPhone from where it can be restored.

G
iven the name, Apple TV,
you?d expect to be able to
watch live television on the
device. But while you can indeed
do this, it?s not possible straight
out of the box. Instead, you need to
download an app and TVPlayer is in
pole position. It allows you to watch
most of the main channels, from BBC
One, Two and Four to ITV, Channel
4 and Five and, if you pay, you can
also receive some premium channels
including TLC and Universal.
The only downside is that the
stations are streamed in standard
definition but there is on-demand
content so you shouldn?t be at
a loss for things to watch. It also
works on Apple TV from the third
generation onwards and there should
be something for everyone, with
children?s television, music, news,
food and shopping channels
thrown in.
The TVPlayer app allows you to watch
terrestrial television stations on Apple TV
Step-by-step Switch on to TVPlayer
1 Install TVPlayer app
With TVPlayer, you gain access to 60 UK
television channels for free. First, however,
you need to download the app so visit the
App Store on your Apple TV and install it.
78
187
2 Watch Live TV
Unlike Apple?s own TV app, there are
live channels to watch. Click the ?Live TV? tab
and go down the list to see which shows are
currently airing. Click again to watch one.
3 View On Demand
You can also watch shows on-demand
by clicking the relevant tab at the top of the
screen. Scroll through the categories on the
left and click a programme on the right.
Although TVPlayer?s app on some other devices has added the ability to
record TV in the cloud, this doesn?t appear to be an option on Apple TV yet.
Watch premium subscription channels
You can also use the app to view paid-for stations such as
Eurosport, History and Discovery
Subscription
channels
The app clearly shows which
channels require a subscription
with the use of a red banner
placed over the preview image
of a show, saving you from
unnecessarily clicking.
Pay for TV
If you are not a subscriber and
you click to watch, you?ll be
taken to a screen offering a free
14-day trial. Ordinarily, all of the
subscription channels together
costs 99/month.
Knowledge base
Watch digital-first channels
As well as allowing you to watch
channels from the likes of the BBC
and ITV, TVPlayer has recently added
some digital-first streaming channels
including the financial news network
Cheddar and The Pet Collective, a
channel dedicated to entertaining
animal videos. It says more are due to
be added soon.
Cancel subscription
Selecting stations
If you do pay, then you
will be able to click on
the channel and watch as
normal. The channels are
included in the main run of
listings within the app.
4 See the channels
An easy way to find a station if you
already know what?s on is to select Channels
from the tabs to see their logos in a five-wide
grid. Click a channel to watch it live.
If you want to cancel the
premium subscription, open
Settings on your iOS device, tap
?iTunes & App Store?, tap your
Apple ID, tap ?View Apple ID?,
enter your password, selection
subscription and tap TVPlayer.
5 Check the guide
Need to know what is coming up? Then
head for the Guide. This lets you select a
channel and move left and right through the
times so that you don?t miss your favourites.
6 Jump to current time
If you want to jump back to the current
time slot in the Guide, then tap the Play/
Pause button on your Apple TV remote. The
guide also gives a synopsis of each show.

umans may have last set foot on the moon in
1972 but space exploration has nevertheless
come on in leaps and bounds since then.
Astronomers have been discovering new planets and
sending probes to far-flung lands while astronauts have
been flying back and forth to the International Space
Station. These remain exciting times.
You can see this for yourself by tuning into the recently
tweaked NASA app that lets you watch streaming
television footage, view Earth from the ISS, watch
on-demand videos, stream Third Rock Radio and listen
to many podcasts. It really shines on the Apple TV
because it can take full advantage of your television set.
What?s more, the non-live content is constantly being
updated so there?s always something to do and see.
Latest images
NASA is constantly taking
photos and producing artists?
impressions and you can keep
coming back to see them in
all their glory. Click to see
them in full.
Earth As Art
As well as taking images of
space, NASA takes photos of
Earth from the air. Select this
option if you want to see the
stunning results, from lava fields
to salt glaciers.
Image of the Day
NASA picks out one particularly
notable image that it feels
you should take a look at on
most days, either because it
is jaw-dropping or it is linked
to a special event such as
the anniversary of the Hubble
Space Telescope.

Step-by-step Watch live space station streams

2 Watch TV
Select ?TV and Audio? and you?ll see a
secondary menu to the left of the screen.
Highlight and select ?International Space
Station? using your Apple TV remote.
3 View the video
You?ll now see a view from the ISS in
high-definition. Don?t worry if you see a holding
message: sometimes there is a temporary loss
of signal or the cameras are being switched.
It is possible to play a slideshow of subsequent images when you select a
photograph. Just press Play on your Apple TV remote.
View thousands of space images
The NASA app has more than 15,000 images
with new ones added each day

Enjoy live NASA channels
NASA also has a good number of
programmes that you can view live
by clicking on ?NASA TV: Public? and
?NASA TV: Media? within TV and Audio.
See what is coming up by looking at
the guide under the main window. The
times are adjusted for your location so
you don?t have to do some maths to
work out when something starts.
4 Watch full screen
Click on the video and it will fill your entire
television screen for a much better view. You
can make this smaller again by clicking the
Menu button on your Apple TV remote.
5 Track the ISS
There are also two options beneath the
video. Click ?Track? and allow NASA to access
your location. You?ll then be able to see the
current position of the ISS as it orbits Earth.
6 See ISS?s passes
Click Menu on the remote to return to
the video screen. Select ?Passes?. This shows
your sighting opportunities based on your own
location should you wish to gaze skywards.

Unless you have added
your iCloud Drive folder
to the list of exclusions
for backing up using
Time Machine (System

Time Machine should
make local backups of
every file that you see in
that location in Finder.
However, invisible items
such as iCloud Keychain
are not included.
Are there any good,
free apps that can scan
my Mac for viruses?
For manual scans,
Malwarebytes
(malwarebytes.com/
mac), Objective-See?s
KnockKnock (objectivesee.com) and Sqwarq?s
DetectX (sqwarq.com/
detectx) are all excellent
and well-supported. If
you want background

to pay a subscription for

of Kaspersky, Intego and
numerous others.

When I launch the
Photos app on my Mac
it seems to freeze and
I have to force-quit. Is
there anything I can do
about this?
The Photos app can be
temperamental like this,
so be prepared to give
it up to an hour before
giving up on it as it may
be carrying out essential
archiving work. If all
seems lost, yet again,
press Cmd+Alt+Esc to
bring up the Force Quit
dialog and select ?Photos?
there ? it may be showing
up in red to indicate that
it is not responding ? and
click the button to force
it to quit. Now open a
new Finder window and
navigate to the Photos
app and then hold down
the Cmd+Alt keys while
launching it. Photos
should launch with a
?Repair Library? dialog,
so click on the ?Repair?
button and wait. If the
dialog isn?t displayed,
quit Photos and re-open
it with the Alt key held
down. You should then
be able to select the
library that you want to
use. Once done, quit the
app again and re-launch
it with the Cmd+Alt
combination to bring up
the repair dialog again. If
this doesn?t resolve the
issue going forward then
you may need to use a
backup to restore your
photo library ? which is
okay because you are
bound to have one, right?

the coolest new additions is

want it to drain the battery while I am out? Lynsey Milford
I never seem to have enough

for the latest apps! What is the
most effective method of freeing up

Start off by deleting old apps that you no

space by deleting old messages, clearing
Safari caches and even switching to
alternate services. For example, Google
Photos has free unlimited photo storage,

Dynaudio?s Music 1 Intelligent
Wireless Music System is a portable
Choice Wi-Fi or Bluetooth speaker that can
sense where it has been placed and
optimise its sound performance accordingly. It
will even adjust itself on the fly if you decide to
reposition it mid-track, ensuring that it delivers the
best sound quality at all times. This was a feature
that we were very keen to test as soon as we
unboxed and powered up the device.
Range of Music
Before we get to the sound quality though, let
us examine what features the Music 1 brings to
the audio banquet. Danish company, Dynaudio is
synonymous for creating high-end loud speakers
for living rooms, pro recording studios and
cars and its ?Music? range is its first foray into
multiroom speakers that come in different shapes
and sizes to slot into the rooms of your home and
provide a continuous swirl of sound as you walk
through it. Other models include the Music 3, 5
and 7 (no even numbers here) that increase in size
and output depending on the size of the space
you are placing them in and they are all available
in four different colours (dark grey, light grey, blue
and red) to complement the decor in your home.
What?s instantly noticeable about the whole
range of Dynaudio?s Music range of speakers is
that the shape of them is very unconventional
compared to other multiroom speakers. Angular,
yet a lot more diminutive than the size of the box
suggests, the Music 1 won?t exactly pale into
the background of your room, yet it won?t be too
imposing either.
Inside the shell is a one-inch soft-dome tweeter,
a four-inch woofer and 80W of amplification with
a built-in rechargeable battery that provides up to
eight hours of continuous listening. It also comes
with a power cable should you prefer to keep it
based in one permanent location in your home,
but it is fully portable, should you want to use it
externally. The build is sturdy and of good quality.
The unit features playback controls on the top,
USB, AUX and power ports on the back, volume
controls on one edge and a signal meter on the
other. And it sits on a rubber base meaning it
won?t mark whatever surface you place it on.
Music at your fingertips
The full range of Music speakers come with a
free nine-month Tidal membership, and this plays
a huge part in the appeal of the speaker. This
streaming service works alongside Dynaudio?s
own Music Now app to learn your musical tastes
and play songs and automatically generate radio
stations based on the music you love at the touch
of a button ? ideal if you don?t want to select what
you listen to manually. It works phenomenally well
too and we certainly didn?t experience any duff
selections based on our listening history.
As we mentioned earlier, the Music 1 features
RoomAdapt, a system that uses its advanced
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and autonomous
sensors to deliver the best possible sound
regardless of where you place it in the room.
And this, coupled with NoiseAdapt, sensors that
continually monitor and analyse the noise levels
in the room (and make adjustments to the sound
levels it pumps out accordingly), ensures that your
music always sounds great. Putting this to the
test we got great results when placing the Music
1 on a raised surface in the corners of a room or
even centrally ? although it didn?t sound as great
when placed on a work surface in the kitchen
next to the gin bottles!
Although we?re not massively sold on the
design, as a portable speaker the Music 1 more
than holds its own against the other Bluetooth
speakers at the top of their game.

The Major has been Marshall?s flagship
headphones since 2010 and the latest
incarnation, the Major III, feature improved sound,
an updated appearance and a more comfortable

available as both wired or Bluetooth-enabled for
over 30 hours of wireless playtime.
Stunning sound
Thanks to the 40mm custom-tuned dynamic

outstanding as they really enhance the bass
audio as well as smoothing the mids. And the

addition of a single control knob means that you
can control your music, adjust the volume and
even answer calls simply by pushing it in different
directions ? it certainly beats having multiple
controls to learn the locations of.
As you would expect from Marshall, the design
is lip-smackingly good and the headphones
are easy to fold up and stow away when not
needed. The ear pads are also very comfortable
for prolonged periods of listening, which is just as
well because 30 hours of wireless play time is lot
of albums! An ass-kicking set of headphones that
make any music sound otherworldly.

German tech company Mixcder usually makes
high-quality headphones at competitive prices
and the E7s are certainly no exception. These
are active noise cancelling headphones, meaning
that they?re expected to block out background
noise, and they do a great job of filtering out
most external sounds, meaning you can really
lose yourself in your music. They also come
with an built-in microphone and the option to be
used wired, via a supplied 3.5mm jack cable, or
wireless via Bluetooth.
Undoubtedly the best thing about these
headphones is the sound quality. They provide
clean, crisp, immersive sound whatever you

videos or gaming ? thanks to the premium 40mm

Sleek and stylish
Coming in their own stylish carry case, these
headphones boast a sleek, simple design that
looks high-end and oozes quality. In addition, the
earpads are made of a luxurious material to give
you extra comfort while you?re wearing them. On
the downside, the drivers can be a little distracting
while listening at lower levels as you can detect
a faint buzz, but ramp up the sound to block out

products by LittleBits and is an electronics kit that
offers the creation of a real-life Star Wars droid
for the young, and the young at heart. The kit is a
great learning tool for teaching children about how
circuitry works as well as the basics of coding
and programming. Not only that but there are also
countless different configurations of this droid so
you can continuously create unique and custom
droids to suit your liking.
The assembly is very straightforward thanks
to a free iOS app that connects via Bluetooth
to your droid and this also acts as a remote
control when your droid is up and running. The

great for people who would like to get into coding
but want to start off with something easier. Using
the tools provided you can make your droid wave,
self-navigate and much more, but you are also
encouraged to experiment to see what you can
get your R2 unit to do. Educational and fun!
Verdict
An engaging ?toy? for kids and adults alike who are interested in
Star Wars, electronics and even basic coding.

Sometimes, specialist music software can be
intimidating to newcomers. We love Syntronik,
but if you just want to get the beats in your head
down and have no real idea how to use the
software then it?s going to take a while to learn
what every button and dial does. KeyboardSampler
is a much easier-to-grasp proposition that uses
your standard Mac keyboard layout to lay down
basic drum patterns using built-in instruments. It is
also a handy tool for experienced musicians as a
means to create a quick beat.
What?s good about this app is the vast amount
of features, which include Note Repeat, Sample
Chords and Arpeggios. These allow musicians
to create professional-sounding beat patterns in
a short amount of time simply by assigning them
?
to your Mac?s keyboard. The downside is that
you?ll need a lot of trial and error to get the results
you want because the tutorial videos are terrible.
Strangely, this is largely because they contain no
sound (baffling for a sound-based app), only words
and demonstrative keyboard presses. So unless
you actually know what an arpeggio is then this
app won?t help you. The tutorials also play really
fast so keeping up is a large problem.
It is this severe lack of professional sheen that
makes it hard to justify the lofty price tag. We like
the simplicity and an interface that makes it easy to
assign beats to a tempo dictated by the keyboard
layout, but you?ll need to invest a lot of time
experimenting before you start getting the results.
There?s definitely potential in the updates though?
Verdict
Hamstrung by ?mute? tutorial videos you?ll need to keep scratching at the surface
to get the most out of this app. But it works as a simple beat-generator.

If ever a scene is set by a soundtrack then the
opening sombre piano notes of OPUS let you
know exactly what you are in for ? a story-driven
adventure set in the bleakest of post-apocalyptic
worlds ravaged by plague and decay. At the heart
of the story are John, the son of a rocket engineer,
and Fei, a witch, emerging, blinking, into the world
that remains after a 20-year cryogenic sleep.
Together they must scour the land and salvage the
parts needed to build a new rocket and launch the
tormented souls of the dead to a final resting place
amongst the stars. As you do.
The game begins as a bit of a plod with John on
fetch duty to locate and gather the rocket parts.
To do this you have to explore the map, following
clues on where to find the items that you need. A
point-and-click mechanism would have probably
worked better for this part rather than having to use
keys to move John around, which really feels like a
chore. Mercifully, you can always fast-track back to
the Rocket Factory once you have gathered parts,
but a similar option to jump straight to all of the
places you discover would have been appreciated!
The intriguing story, in which you start to explore
the past of the ghosts you encounter, ultimately
compels you to play further though and the payoff
is worthwhile because the narrative of OPUS lingers
long after you finish playing.
Verdict
The slow start may ultimately put some players off but if you persevere then
you?ll be rewarded with a great story that will leave you tingling.

YouTube
Take a break from
YouTube videos
Have you ever visited YouTube to watch one video and
found yourself sucked in for hours? Help is at hand
Difficulty
Time needed
2
A
lthough you?d expect YouTube to want us to
devour as many videos as possible, the current
push to improve our digital wellbeing has
prompted it to encourage healthy habits. This may strike
some as a little odd ? after all, YouTube has caused the
problem in the first place to some extent by introducing
autoplaying videos. But for anyone even mildly addicted to
the app, it should be seen as welcome news.
It works by prompting you to stop viewing after a set
period of time while giving you control over how long you
want to binge on videos for before being prodded to take
a breather. It?s certainly very easy to set up, allowing you
to receive a notification after as little as 15 minutes or as
many as three hours, making it a feature that?s well
worth exploring.
You can now set YouTube to remind you to take a break,
which can be handy for breaking its hypnotic lure?
Step-by-step Receive prompts to stop watching videos
1 Update the app
First of all, ensure you?re using the latest
version of YouTube (13.17 onwards) by visiting
the App Store on your iPhone. Note this
feature is not yet available for iPad.
68
187
2 Select profile image
Now open YouTube. By default, you can
watch videos for as long as you want without
being prompted to stop. To alter that, tap your
profile image in the top-right corner.
3 Open the Settings
The function to enable and disable a
reminder to stop watching is located within
the settings of the YouTube app itself. So on
the menu which now appears, tap ?Settings?.
In the coming months, YouTube will introduce a feature that will show your
daily average watch time and the exact amount of minutes and hours viewed.
How the timer works
It?s worth knowing just when the timer starts and
stops so that you can better control your viewing
Closing a video
The timer will pause when
a video you?re currently
watching is closed. When
you then open another
video, the app will make
a note and kickstart the
timer again.
Watch offline
If you are watching a
YouTube video offline or if
you are casting it to your
television, then the timer
will not run. You must be
online and watching on
your iPhone.
Pausing a video
When you pause a video
you are watching online in
YouTube, the timer pauses.
It resumes when you begin
watching again, and resets
if the video is paused for
more than 30 minutes.
Knowledge base
Alter the number of
notifications you receive
Leave the app
Fed up with YouTube sending you
notifications throughout the day?
You can now combine the lot into a
daily digest that you only receive at a
specific time. Tap your profile image
and select Settings>Notifications>
Scheduled Digest. Now simply select
your delivery time.
4 Take a break
You will see an option at the top of the
screen labelled ?Remind me to take a break?.
It will say ?Never? by default so tap this to view
the reminder options available to you.
As soon as you press the
home button and close
the YouTube app, the
timer will reset. This also
happens if you log out of
your account, or switch
accounts or devices.
5 Make a choice
Here you?ll see a number of frequencies,
allowing you to set reminders for every 15, 30,
60, 90 or 180 minutes. Tap the time at which
you want to be prompted and tap back.
6 Watch YouTube
Exit the Settings by tapping ?X? and begin
watching YouTube videos. After the time
period you set, a reminder will appear on the
screen. To continue watching, tap ?Dismiss?.

3D Touch iPhone functions
3D Touch opens up new ways of accessing features in iPhone apps. How many do you use?
E
ver since the iPhone 6S the screen on
the phone has responded to two levels of
pressure. There is a light tap which acts
like taps normally do and opens apps, selects
menus and buttons, and there is a firm press
which activates 3D Touch. What happens next
depends on the app but it usually gives access
to functions that would normally take several
taps and navigation through multiple screens.
To configure 3D Touch on the iPhone go
to Settings>General>Accessibility>3D Touch.
Turn it on and drag the slider to your preferred
position. 3D Touch can be implemented
anywhere by apps and there is no obvious
indication if a firm press will do anything
different to a light press. Just try it and see.

Recent note
Many apps display a menu
when 3D Touch is used
with them and Notes is no
exception. Your most recent
note is displayed at the top
and this makes it easy to go
straight to it.

Either 3D Touch the Camera app on the
Home screen or in the Control Centre and
a useful menu is displayed which provides
quick access to the most common camera

2
Wireless functions
Swipe up to show the Control
Centre and there is a section for wireless
connections with four icons for Airplane
mode, wireless, Bluetooth and mobile data.
3D Touch them and a panel with two more

AirDrop and Personal Hotspot.
New notes
This New Note menu and
the New Checklist menu
enable you to go straight to

Add photos
Sometimes it is useful
to store photos in notes,
such as when compiling
information for projects and
reports. Tap this button
and then take a photo and
insert it into a note.
3D Touch inside apps
We have barely scratched the surface
of 3D Touch and there is so much more
waiting to be discovered. 3D Touch
works not only from the Home screen,
but also inside some applications as
well. For example, 3D Touch all the
toolbar buttons at the bottom of the
screen in Safari and see what happens.

Sometimes it is obvious where a
link on a web page in Safari will
take you, but not always. You can
preview the links using 3D Touch.
Press the link and a window
opens in the centre of the screen
to show the link destination.
It normally takes several taps to
open Safari and go to the reading

the menu and just one tap away.
Moving the cursor around the

and fingers are big. To make it
easier 3D Touch the keyboard to
turn it into a trackpad and drag the
cursor around the screen.

Track your family
How to locate and get directions to family members in
the iOS Messages app
O
Difficulty

5
ne of the most useful features of iOS is the facility
to track and locate family members (or anyone
else who chooses to share their location with
you) in the Messages app.
As long as the Location Services option is enabled you will
be able to track the location of family members
Step-by-step Get directions to family members
1 Share location
Ensure family members have location
sharing turned on. They must go to Settings>
Privacy, turn on Location Services, then tap on
?Share My Location? and ensure this is on.
72
187
2 Go to Messages
You can now track that person through
Messages. Open the message conversation
with the person you wish to track and tap on
the small ?i? icon in the top-right corner.
3 View on a map
Their location is now shown on a map.
From this screen you can send your current
location to them or stop sharing your location.
Tap on the map to open it in full-screen mode.
You can instantly share your location with other people in Messages by
tapping the Maps icon at the bottom of the interface and then tapping ?Send?.
Tracking through Messages
Tap the ?i? icon to start tracking?
More options
If you tap on the map
then it will be opened
in full-screen and you
will be able to select the
?Directions? option to be
guided straight to the
person in question.
Map location
As long as family members
share their location with
you then you will be able
to pinpoint their location
on a map within the
Messages app.
Make calls
You will also see facilities
to call or FaceTime your
family member ? all
without having to waste
time leaving Messages
and launching other apps.

Family Sharing
Read Receipts
You can also track family members
through Family Sharing. One family
member taps on their name in Settings
and taps ?Set Up Family Sharing?.
Then family members can share their
locations with each other and if one
member loses their iPhone then other
family members can help them find it
via the Find My iPhone service.
4 Full-screen mode
In full-screen map mode you can tap on
the small ?i? icon in the lower-right corner to
change the style of the map (Standard, Hybrid
or Satellite) and open the proper Maps app.
Ensure that the ?Send

is turned on. That way,
whenever you send new
messages you will be
able to see instantly if they
have been received and
read (or not).
5 Get directions
Tap on ?Directions? to enter navigation
mode whereby you will receive directions
on how to navigate to your family member.
Choose a mode of transport and tap ?Go?.
6 Meet up
Your iPhone will now act like a sat nav
giving spoken instructions on how to reach
your family member. This is incredibly useful,
especially if family members are out alone.

Discover how to make the Music app display the
lyrics to the song that you are currently playing

T
here is much to enjoy about Apple Music,
such as the amount of musical choice to
stream, creating playlists and downloading
tracks to listen to offline. And if you fancy a good
ol? fashioned sing-along then it can also display
lyrics to your favourite tracks. Actually getting
the lyrics to be displayed has proved challenging
for many of you so note that it is important that
you meet the following criteria: you can only
obtain the song lyrics if you are connected to
the internet and subscribe to Apple Music, and
if they contain explicit words then you will need
to change your restrictions settings to view them
(go to Settings>General>Restrictions for this).
Otherwise, clear your throat, take a sharp intake
of breath and start belting out the classics like a
seasoned crooner.
Step-by-step Display song lyrics
1 Swipe up
While listening to a song, tap or swipe up
from the music player at the bottom of the
interface to display the ?Now Playing? screen
that shows the expanded playback options.
74
187
2 Access Lyrics option
Swipe up again and you will see the ?Up
Next? list of songs. Just above this (under
the Shuffle/Repeat options) you will see the
Lyrics option ? tap on ?Show? to the right.
3 Start singing
The lyrics to the current song will now
be displayed on the screen and you can
scroll up or down through them. Just tap
?Hide? once you have finished singing along.
76
187
2 Open Watch app
Be warned: this process removes
everything from your Watch. We?re erasing the
Watch to prompt the backup. Open the Watch
app, tap ?My Watch? and select ?General?.
3 Reset Apple Watch
Now scroll down to the bottom of the
screen and select Reset. Again, to reiterate,
this forced back-up is mainly intended for use
if you?re selling or passing on your Watch.
When you use your iPhone to set up a Watch, it will ask if you want to use
any of the backups you have previously created.
Verify your Apple Watch backup
After you have forced your Watch to back up to
your iPhone, check everything worked as planned
Settings app
Launch the Settings app
on your iPhone and reach
this screen by tapping
General>iPhone Storage
before looking for and
tapping Watch in the latter
section of the display.
Delete backups
We wouldn?t recommend
doing this unless you really
want to but you can tap
?Delete App? to remove all
of the data ? including the
backup ? from the iPhone.
Docs & Data
Here, the backup you have
just created should be
displayed. You?ll see the
name of your Watch, its
size and type, the date the
backup was created and
the data size.
Knowledge base
Create a copy in iCloud
Once you have your Watch data safe
on your iPhone, you may want to
ensure there?s a second backup by
sending it to iCloud. Open the Settings
app on your iPhone, tap your Apple
ID at the top of the screen, select
iCloud>iCloud Back up and tap ?Back
Up Now?. Everything on your iPhone
including the Watch data will be stored.
4 Erase content
Tap the option ?Erase Apple Watch
Content and Settings? at the top of the screen.
You?ll then understandably be prompted to
confirm that you want to do this so go ahead. .
Deep Sleep
As if to underline how
infrequently the Watch
backs up, the one we have
just made is dated 2018
but the entries beneath are
from early and late 2017
and 2016.
5 Enter password
Enter your Apple ID password. The next
stage will unpair your Apple Watch, remove
it from your account, disable Activation Lock
and remove Find My Watch.
6 Unpairing Watch
Now simply wait while the Watch unpairs
from your iPhone. As it does so, a backup will
be created and this will be safely stored on
your iPhone from where it can be restored.

iven the name, Apple TV,
you?d expect to be able to
watch live television on the
device. But while you can indeed
do this, it?s not possible straight
out of the box. Instead, you need to
download an app and TVPlayer is in
pole position. It allows you to watch
most of the main channels, from BBC
One, Two and Four to ITV, Channel
4 and Five and, if you pay, you can
also receive some premium channels
including TLC and Universal.
The only downside is that the
stations are streamed in standard
definition but there is on-demand
content so you shouldn?t be at
a loss for things to watch. It also
works on Apple TV from the third
generation onwards and there should
be something for everyone, with
children?s television, music, news,
food and shopping channels
thrown in.
The TVPlayer app allows you to watch
terrestrial television stations on Apple TV
Step-by-step Switch on to TVPlayer
1 Install TVPlayer app
With TVPlayer, you gain access to 60 UK
television channels for free. First, however,
you need to download the app so visit the
App Store on your Apple TV and install it.
78
187
2 Watch Live TV
Unlike Apple?s own TV app, there are
live channels to watch. Click the ?Live TV? tab
and go down the list to see which shows are
currently airing. Click again to watch one.
3 View On Demand
You can also watch shows on-demand
by clicking the relevant tab at the top of the
screen. Scroll through the categories on the
left and click a programme on the right.
Although TVPlayer?s app on some other devices has added the ability to
record TV in the cloud, this doesn?t appear to be an option on Apple TV yet.
Watch premium subscription channels
You can also use the app to view paid-for stations such as
Eurosport, History and Discovery
Subscription
channels
The app clearly shows which
channels require a subscription
with the use of a red banner
placed over the preview image
of a show, saving you from
unnecessarily clicking.
Pay for TV
If you are not a subscriber and
you click to watch, you?ll be
taken to a screen offering a free
14-day trial. Ordinarily, all of the
subscription channels together
costs 99/month.
Knowledge base
Watch digital-first channels
As well as allowing you to watch
channels from the likes of the BBC
and ITV, TVPlayer has recently added
some digital-first streaming channels
including the financial news network
Cheddar and The Pet Collective, a
channel dedicated to entertaining
animal videos. It says more are due to
be added soon.
Cancel subscription
Selecting stations
If you do pay, then you
will be able to click on
the channel and watch as
normal. The channels are
included in the main run of
listings within the app.
4 See the channels
An easy way to find a station if you
already know what?s on is to select Channels
from the tabs to see their logos in a five-wide
grid. Click a channel to watch it live.
If you want to cancel the
premium subscription, open
Settings on your iOS device, tap
?iTunes & App Store?, tap your
Apple ID, tap ?View Apple ID?,
enter your password, selection
subscription and tap TVPlayer.
5 Check the guide
Need to know what is coming up? Then
head for the Guide. This lets you select a
channel and move left and right through the
times so that you don?t miss your favourites.
6 Jump to current time
If you want to jump back to the current
time slot in the Guide, then tap the Play/
Pause button on your Apple TV remote. The
guide also gives a synopsis of each show.

come on in leaps and bounds since then.
Astronomers have been discovering new planets and
sending probes to far-flung lands while astronauts have
been flying back and forth to the International Space

You can see this for yourself by tuning into the recently
tweaked NASA app that lets you watch streaming
television footage, view Earth from the ISS, watch
on-demand videos, stream Third Rock Radio and listen
to many podcasts. It really shines on the Apple TV
because it can take full advantage of your television set.
What?s more, the non-live content is constantly being

high-definition. Don?t worry if you see a holding
message: sometimes there is a temporary loss
of signal or the cameras are being switched.
It is possible to play a slideshow of subsequent images when you select a
photograph. Just press Play on your Apple TV remote.

Unless you have added

When I launch the

The Photos app can be

so be prepared to give
it up to an hour before
giving up on it as it may
be carrying out essential
archiving work. If all
seems lost, yet again,
press Cmd+Alt+Esc to
bring up the Force Quit

there ? it may be showing

it is not responding ? and
click the button to force
it to quit. Now open a

navigate to the Photos

the Cmd+Alt keys while
launching it. Photos
should launch with a
?Repair Library? dialog,
so click on the ?Repair?

quit Photos and re-open
it with the Alt key held

be able to select the

this doesn?t resolve the

How can I stop my iPhone from vibrating as I don?t
want it to drain the battery while I am out? Lynsey Milford
I never seem to have enough
storage space on my iPhone
for the latest apps! What is the
most effective method of freeing up
extra space? Colin Price
Start off by deleting old apps that you no
longer use, clear off any music you no
longer listen to and remove unwanted
movies and podcasts. You can also save
space by deleting old messages, clearing
Safari caches and even switching to
alternate services. For example, Google
Photos has free unlimited photo storage,
so you can delete them off your iPhone
once they have been safely backed up.
Go to Settings>General>iPhone Storage
for more ways to save space.
1 Open Settings 2 Pick option
Like everything on your

for calls and alerts can be
controlled via the Settings

Scroll down through
the settings and tap on
?Sounds & Haptics?. Now go
to the ?Sounds and Vibration

3 Make changes
Now tap an option,
such as ?Ringtone? then
tap ?Vibration? and set it to
?None?. Repeat this for all
the different patterns.

To use this feature your vehicle must be
modern enough to have in-car Bluetooth
or a CarPlay compatible stereo installed.
If this is the case then go to Settings>

your location can be determined by your

will be marked in your Maps app so you?ll

Dynaudio?s Music 1 Intelligent
Wireless Music System is a portable
Choice Wi-Fi or Bluetooth speaker that can
sense where it has been placed and
optimise its sound performance accordingly. It
will even adjust itself on the fly if you decide to
reposition it mid-track, ensuring that it delivers the
best sound quality at all times. This was a feature
that we were very keen to test as soon as we
unboxed and powered up the device.
Range of Music
Before we get to the sound quality though, let
us examine what features the Music 1 brings to
the audio banquet. Danish company, Dynaudio is
synonymous for creating high-end loud speakers
for living rooms, pro recording studios and
cars and its ?Music? range is its first foray into
multiroom speakers that come in different shapes
and sizes to slot into the rooms of your home and
provide a continuous swirl of sound as you walk
through it. Other models include the Music 3, 5
and 7 (no even numbers here) that increase in size
and output depending on the size of the space
you are placing them in and they are all available
in four different colours (dark grey, light grey, blue
and red) to complement the decor in your home.
What?s instantly noticeable about the whole
range of Dynaudio?s Music range of speakers is
that the shape of them is very unconventional
compared to other multiroom speakers. Angular,
yet a lot more diminutive than the size of the box
suggests, the Music 1 won?t exactly pale into
the background of your room, yet it won?t be too
imposing either.
Inside the shell is a one-inch soft-dome tweeter,
a four-inch woofer and 80W of amplification with
a built-in rechargeable battery that provides up to
eight hours of continuous listening. It also comes
with a power cable should you prefer to keep it
based in one permanent location in your home,
but it is fully portable, should you want to use it
externally. The build is sturdy and of good quality.
The unit features playback controls on the top,
USB, AUX and power ports on the back, volume
controls on one edge and a signal meter on the
other. And it sits on a rubber base meaning it
won?t mark whatever surface you place it on.
Music at your fingertips
The full range of Music speakers come with a
free nine-month Tidal membership, and this plays
a huge part in the appeal of the speaker. This
streaming service works alongside Dynaudio?s
own Music Now app to learn your musical tastes
and play songs and automatically generate radio
stations based on the music you love at the touch
of a button ? ideal if you don?t want to select what
you listen to manually. It works phenomenally well
too and we certainly didn?t experience any duff
selections based on our listening history.
As we mentioned earlier, the Music 1 features
RoomAdapt, a system that uses its advanced
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and autonomous
sensors to deliver the best possible sound
regardless of where you place it in the room.
And this, coupled with NoiseAdapt, sensors that
continually monitor and analyse the noise levels
in the room (and make adjustments to the sound
levels it pumps out accordingly), ensures that your
music always sounds great. Putting this to the
test we got great results when placing the Music
1 on a raised surface in the corners of a room or
even centrally ? although it didn?t sound as great
when placed on a work surface in the kitchen
next to the gin bottles!
Although we?re not massively sold on the
design, as a portable speaker the Music 1 more
than holds its own against the other Bluetooth
speakers at the top of their game.

needed. The ear pads are also very comfortable
for prolonged periods of listening, which is just as
well because 30 hours of wireless play time is lot

German tech company Mixcder usually makes
high-quality headphones at competitive prices
and the E7s are certainly no exception. These
are active noise cancelling headphones, meaning
that they?re expected to block out background
noise, and they do a great job of filtering out
most external sounds, meaning you can really
lose yourself in your music. They also come
with an built-in microphone and the option to be
used wired, via a supplied 3.5mm jack cable, or
wireless via Bluetooth.
Undoubtedly the best thing about these
headphones is the sound quality. They provide
clean, crisp, immersive sound whatever you

Coming in their own stylish carry case, these
headphones boast a sleek, simple design that
looks high-end and oozes quality. In addition, the
earpads are made of a luxurious material to give
you extra comfort while you?re wearing them. On
the downside, the drivers can be a little distracting
