Apple becomes
the first-ever
trillion dollar company
A look back on how Apple reached the iconic milestone
Another brilliant month
of revenue, another
incredible quarterly
review. And now,
after two decades of
unparalleled growth, Apple has become
the first trillion dollar company, beating
tech rivals Amazon and Alphabet
(Google?s parent company) to the
landmark valuation.
It?s hard to appreciate just how vast
this valuation is. There are 12 zeros in a
trillion. If Apple were a country, in financial
terms it would be a third of the size of the
UK economy and surpass the economies
of Saudi Arabia, Argentina and The
Netherlands. It makes up 5% of America?s
GDP and its value now exceeds the
combined wealth of the 11 richest people
in the world. Cupertino?s cash reserve, that
is spending money to us and you, stands at
a whopping $285 billion.
These are eye-watering figures to digest,
but how has Apple done this? Cast your

Key events in Apple?s trillion dollar timeline
So just how did Apple, a company
that was founded in the garage of
Steve Jobs? childhood home in Los
Altos, California in 1976, surpass the
economies of several countries? Here
we take a look back in time to reveal
the key events and how they affected
the share prices during Apple?s
ascension to the stratosphere.

The tech inside was revolutionary too,
and soon Apple were back competing
with the big boys. Their big success story
came with the iPod in 2001. The iPod
wasn?t the world?s first MP3, but it soon
became synonymous with personal music.
The white headphones were a fashion
statement in themselves and the creation
of the iTunes software further sky-rocketed
its popularity. In truth the iPod was the real
turning point for Apple.
By the time Steve Jobs famously
unveiled the iPhone in 2007, Apple
was already one of the world?s biggest
companies, but no one could have
predicted the boom the smartphone would
have created in the years that followed.
Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones,

?Our strong business performance

?We returned almost $25 billion to investors

This strong quarterly call pushed Apple?s
share price to $207.05 the next day (July

dollar valuation. This might not mean
much to the average consumer, but strong
backing like this usually means another

Apple has raised
money for the
National Park
Foundation by
donating $1 to
the charity for every purchase
made last month with Apple
Pay in any Apple Store, on
apple.com or through the Apple
Store app in the US.
?America?s national parks
are treasures everyone should
experience, and we?re proud to
support them again this month by
donating a dollar for every purchase
made with Apple Pay at one of our
stores,? says Apple?s CEO Tim Cook.
?These awe-inspiring places are our
national inheritance, and Apple is
doing our part to pass them on to
future generations.?
Apple also introduced a special
achievement badge for Apple Watch
inspired by the national parks for
anyone who completed a walk, run or
wheelchair workout of 50 minutes.

The Mac mini set for
long-awaited return Mac mini
Remember the Mac mini? We?ll excuse you if
you?ve long forgotten about the smallest and
cheapest part of Apple?s Mac line-up. After
all, it hasn?t been refreshed since 2014, and it uses Intel
processors that are five years old. But Apple are being
tipped to revive the range ? and the MacBook Air ?
before the end of the year.
Tim Cook actually said this last year: ? While it is not the
time to share any details, we do plan for the Mac mini to
be an important part of our product line going forward.?
Maybe we?re about to find out exactly what he meant.
10

Apple had to temporarily
close one of its flagship
stores in Amsterdam this
month after an iPad leaked gas from
its battery. Although reports of a fire
were wide of the mark according
to Apple, three employees were
treated for minor injuries after inhaling
the gas. Apple said it was now
?investigating? the incident. It added:
?Our staff were able to evacuate
customers quickly and safely and the
store re-opened shortly afterwards.?
There have been more reports of
battery issues since Apple started its
iPhone battery replacement scheme,
which replaces faulty batteries free of
charge, last year.

Apple?s retail expansion in Japan
continues Apple news
Another month, another Apple store opening ? this time in Japan,
the country where Apple opened its first store outside of the US in
2003. Apple has opened a store in Kyoto, a technological centre
for Japan on Shij Dori. The street, surrounded by many of Kyoto?s famous
shrines and temples, has served as the city?s main shopping centre for
500 years. Apple Kyoto?s architecture takes inspiration from local design
and materials, with upper floors clad in a translucent envelope inspired by
Japanese lanterns. The use of lightweight timber frame and special paper on
the upper facade also references Japan?s traditional houses.

any of us use our Macs and iOS devices well into the night,
which can place unnecessary strain on our eyes. Thankfully,
there is a built-in feature called Night Shift that shifts the
colour temperature to warmer tones and reduces the blue light that
stimulates our brains. Here we show you how to utilise this feature.
Activate Night
Shift mode
1
Night Shift mode is a useful
feature of iOS that adjusts the
colour temperature of your
iPhone/iPad display towards
the yellowish part of the
spectrum and reduces some of
the blue light from the screen.
Here is how to activate it?
1Head to Settings 2 Manually enable 3 Adjust the temp
Open the Settings app
and then navigate to Display &
Brightness. Here you will see the
Night Shift option. Tap on it.
At any time you can flick the

The Colour Temperature bar
at the bottom of the screen lets
you adjust the warmness of the
colours used in Night Shift mode.

Night Shift mode
2
Night Shift mode can also
be scheduled so that it
kicks in automatically every
day without you having to
manually enable it. In the
scheduling options you can
even customise the preferred
temperature of the colours.
Go to Settings>Display &
Brightness and tap on ?Night
Shift?. Now move the ?Scheduled?
switch to the ?On? position.
You will now see times next
to the ?From? and ?To? options.
Tap here and you can choose a
custom schedule.
Tap on ?Turn On At? and
?Turn Off At? and pick the times
you want Night Shift mode to
kick in/deactivate.
Enable Night

3
Night Shift mode was also
introduced to the Mac in
macOS Sierra and works
in exactly the same way as
the iOS version to soften the
colours and make your Mac
display easier on the eyes at
night. Here?s how to access it.
12
190
Head to the System
Preferences and then click on
?Displays?. You should notice a
tab at the top called ?Night Shift?.
Like the iOS version, you
can enable Night Shift instantly or
schedule it to kick in and turn off
at certain times.
Night Shift mode has also
been added to your Notification
Centre and you can instantly turn
it on from there.

Genius
It?s useful to know the new features in your favourite mobile operating system,
but knowing how to really use them will offer many more advantages
A
pple is known for
making software
that can be used by
people of all ages and
technical knowledge levels.
There is rarely a learning curve, as
is evidenced by the lack of manuals
included with the products, and
for most people it is a case of
jumping in and discovering what
the hardware and software has to
offer. However, if you take the time
to truly understand what each new
feature can do in iOS 12 you will get
more out of your iPhone and iPad
and you can learn how to become
an iOS genius in no time.
We will guide you through what
is new and highlight the changes
to classic iOS apps, some of which
14
190
are hard to spot at first glance,
and we will show you how to get
the most out of them instantly.
With Apple?s simple approach and
a sprinkling of knowledge your
investment could grow overnight
and become even more useful
than it was before. No matter how
intuitive software and hardware are,
the fact is that modern-day devices
can do a lot and in a myriad of
ways so it is impossible to cover
every area, but if you continue to
learn the benefits will become clear.
You can save lots of time every day,
become more productive and enjoy
your device in ways that you may
not have previously considered.
iOS 12 is a progression from
what has come before rather than a
completely new operating system,
but there is still a lot to learn and a
selection of features that require a
little time to become familiar with. It
may be that some of the changes
are not valuable to you, but it is
also likely that some will become
features that you use every single
day to get things done. Even if
you just find one, it will be worth
taking the time to understand how
to make the most of it, and to have
a long look around to see all that
is new. It is likely that the smaller
tweaks will not be discovered for
some time, but once you know
where they are you can start to
adjust them to your requirements.
Take your time and enjoy all the
beneficial changes.

Understand your usage
Screen Time will help you to know exactly how you use your iOS devices
Screen Time lets you delve deeper than you normally would into
your iPhone and iPad usage. You likely have some idea of how
addicted to your devices you are, but here you can back that
1 Enable it
When you first open the feature by
going to Settings>Screen Time it will enable
and start to track your usage immediately.
up with stats and, just like a fitness tracker, you can aim to
improve your usage over time. The amount of data and control
on offer is quite astonishing.
2 And so it begins
The stats will start to build up and you
can now spend time diving deep into your
usage by app and your overall screen time.
3 Set a limit
Tap ?Add Limit? in any app to control
your habits going forward. It?s voluntary, but
it will help you manage your usage.
Measure anything in seconds
Measure is the standout addition for many in iOS 12 and while it is very easy to
use, there are some tricks to learn to help you get the most benefits from it
1 The right space
2 Point and scan
3 Tap to capture
4 Easy conversions
5 Point to point
6 It?s not exact
Your iPhone needs to calibrate itself
to understand where it is before you can
measure objects. It takes seconds.
You will be shown the measurement in
two formats and you can tap once to share
with others instantly.
Simply point at any object and the
Measure app will recognise it and produce
immediate data to work with.
Tap the ?+? icon to measure from a
new point. You can do this again and again
until it is complete.
Tap a marker and the measurement
will be displayed ready for you to copy to
any other app.
Remember that the measurements are
not exact. They are great for general use,
but not all technical projects.

Use the new camera
The already impressive iPhone camera has received a couple of
useful changes to make your photos even better than before
The hardware is what makes mobile iOS photography
so popular and there is no doubt that Apple has put
many resources into its development over the years. In
iOS 12 there are no large-scale changes in the Camera
1 Fun effects
When you snap a photo in Messages
or FaceTime you can now tap ?Effects? and
take advantage of a host of fun features to
add personality.
setup, but there are two useful additions. Some would
like to see major changes, but the only way to seriously
improve your photos is to take time to improve your own
technique with continual practice.
2 Emojis, filters & text
3 Better portraits
1 Interactive stocks
2 The financial news
4 Edit your recordings
5 The classics remain
Tap any feature and see how it
changes the photo. Multiple fonts, filters
and emojis can be added and sent with
one further tap.
Portrait Lighting has been greatly
improved so that your Portrait photos
separate the person from the background
more accurately. Snap to see the results.
Understand the
improved apps
Some of the classic iOS apps have received
an update in iOS 12 and all of them for
the better. What were very simplistic apps
in the past now have new features which
will help you to do more with them, and
we will show you what is new so that you
can explore the benefits. There is nothing
technical to learn here, but knowing the
changes will help a lot.
3 A redesigned voice
Voice Memos has been completely
redesigned, but is still as easy to use. Tap
the red record button and away you go. It
works exactly as you would want.
16
190
You can now create shortcuts for
activities you do often. This will enable you
to automate many of these tasks and to
understand just how beneficial Siri can be.
Your memos can be edited in a new
interface which makes recording and
making changes on the go super easy. The
design is perfected simplicity.
Siri will offer suggestions for apps you
use by understanding your various usage
patterns over time. Potentially, this could
grow into a very powerful tool.
There are lots of secrets in the other
default iOS apps. For example, landscape
mode in the Calculator app gives you a
true scientific calculation experience.

Control your
notifications
Notifications are vital for keeping in touch
and for connecting with friends and work
colleagues, but they have tended to be
slightly clunky when it comes to how they
can be controlled. iOS 12 resolves this
issue and you can now manage the settings
in a much more personal way which will
let you receive notifications in the way you
want. It takes no time at all to learn.
3 Tap to expand
One tap lets you view all of the
notifications from a specific app. You
can then tap any message to read it. Tap
?Show less? to group them together again.
1 Individual notifications 2 Bringing order
Multiple notifications offer a lot of
detail, but can be tiresome to view if you
receive many throughout the day via
various apps. They need a little taming.
In the Notification Centre in iOS 12
you will see everything grouped by app
which makes it much easier to view what
has come in with just a glance.
4 Manage everything
5 Quieter notifications
Swipe left, slowly, on any notification
and look for the new options. The
?Manage? option is what you want to use to
personalise the settings for your needs.
Tap ?Deliver Quietly? to only show new
messages in the Notification Centre and
?Turn Off?? to disable them. Tap ?Settings?
to see the traditional preferences screen.
FaceTime comes of age
2
FaceTime just grew up significantly and can now be
used to chat with many people for any reason
FaceTime is a crucial feature for families and friends, but to be honest
it has failed to infiltrate the business sector. With the latest update,
however, this has all changed and you can now converse with multiple
people (2) at any time. When someone is speaking the software will
intelligently make them prominent on the screen (1) which makes the
conversation visually as well as audibly logical throughout. Try it with
a few acquaintances and you will see just how quickly and smoothly it
works no matter how many people are present. There is little to learn
in the new FaceTime and you will find that the screen prompts are
completely obvious from the first use which will make you an instant
expert at setting up and managing a call every single time. People can
join the call (3) from an iPhone, iPad, Mac or even an Apple Watch
which will be audio only, but this does mean that the opportunities for
communication are wide-ranging and likely much more frequent than
previously thanks to the compatibility with so many devices. Perhaps
the most pleasing aspect is the sparse design (4) which is merely a
black background with a few thumbnails to signify the participants
during the call. It is pure visual Apple in every respect and really does
take FaceTime to the level many of us wanted to see.

When you start to read in
Apple Books you will find
that the interface now rivals
and beats most of the

Present your perfect self
You can now create a flattering Memoji that represents you to the wider world
Animojis are considered by some to be a novelty and
it is likely that you do not use them often, but they
can be hugely entertaining. They use your voice and
automatically animate themselves to follow along
with what you are saying, but now you can take that
personalisation even further by creating one yourself.
Use the options provided to represent yourself. It may
not be deadly accurate, but it?s a lot of fun.
1 Time to create
2 Your skin colour
3 Hairstyling is tricky
4 Other options
5 Be different
6 It?s alive
Tap the Animoji icon and then scroll
to the left and tap the ?+? icon. This will
start the process of creating your first
personalised Memoji. Take your time and
the results will be worthwhile.
Don?t forget the other options such
as brows, eye colour, earrings and hats.
The more time you spend on each of the
different sections, the more likely the
Memoji will look like you.
The first screen offers an indication
of the skin colour options available. They
are not limitless in number, but they should
offer more than enough flexibility to closely
match your skin tone.
Feel free to be different to how you
normally look and add a hat you would
never wear, a silly beard or any facial
feature that will entertain your friends.
There are no limits.
Matching your hairstyle will either be
simple or difficult depending on the style
you have. It does, however, offer a large
range and you should be able to get close
enough to make your Memoji recognisable.
When complete you can tap the red
record button and start speaking. Your
Memoji will come to life and you can
immediately share your creation with
others. Feel free to create more than one.

Find and share your best photos
It is now easier than ever before to search for individual
photos and to share collections with other people
Photos? search facility is now more intuitive and is fast
enough to change the results as you type with multiple
word searches built in. Sharing suggestions give you
ideas of the content you can share with others and it
is clever enough to allow the recipients to complete a
memory by adding photos from the same event or day.

based on who is in the actual photos. It is
eerily clever.
Tap a name at the top and all of the
photos of that person will be displayed.
You can then browse through them or edit
and share as you so wish. The selections
are vast.

When you tap the option, a list of
people in the photos will populate. You can
now select them all or individually choose
who you want to share the photos with. It?s
close to automated.
Typing a descriptive word or a
person?s name at the top will bring up
a series of photos that match what you
need. The search mechanism is quicker
and more accurate than ever before.
Tapping ?Search? at the bottom will
also bring up a semi-populated screen
with people, memories and any other
interesting content that you may wish to
view. Scroll around to see the content.
Photos now also supports multiword searches which allows you to
specify objects, people and even weather
conditions. You will be able to find any
photo you want to view in seconds.

Get to grips with the new Apple News
Apple News is a favourite among iPhone and iPad users, and it just got better and easier to use
1 A new design
You will notice that there is a slightly
cleaner and more logical Apple News
design in iOS 12. The interface is close to
perfect now.
2 Manage your channels 3 Play with Spotlight
Spend some time tailoring the
channels to your preferences and the end
result will be daily content that is genuinely
interesting to you.
Spotlight does an even better job of
presenting longer articles in a way that is
extremely readable. You don?t need to be a
genius to enjoy it.
Do more with Siri
Siri knows more than ever before and will send you to the web less often
Siri gets a rough ride from many critics. Apple?s strong
stance on privacy is partly the reason for the limitations,
but a minimal loss of automation is a small price to pay
1 Know your celebrities
You can now ask Siri for celebrity
facts and most answers will be displayed
within the Siri interface rather than being
presented through a third-party website.
to stay safe when travelling or going about your daily
business. Siri in iOS 12, however, is now smarter and will
offer more genuinely useful benefits.
2 Instant translations
Siri is now capable of translating
phrases in 40 languages. Say a phrase and
ask Siri to translate it to the language of
your choice. The results are instant.
4 Wide-ranging answers 5 Get your passwords
You can also ask Siri ?How healthy? a
type of food is and you will be presented
with a list of facts including fat and sodium
content ? very useful.
Ask Siri for a password that you have
already saved and you will be taken to the
exact listing that you need on your iOS
device. Siri has improved a lot in iOS 12.
3 Understand your food
The USDA database now backs up Siri
and it offers a huge amount of data to give
you answers to questions about foods. It
can help you eat healthily every day.
6 Find your photos
Siri can also find photos of a particular
person or place with a quick question. It
links to many of the default apps to perform
select actions that you need to do.

More battery information
You can analyse the way your iOS battery is
performing in greater detail in iOS 12. Extra
long-term information is available which
will highlight anomalies in performance and
you can also see exact information for how
a specific app has used the battery on a
chosen day. It?s a small addition but can
help stop future problems from occurring.
Check the trend
The iOS 12 battery screen
can display up to 10 days of
detailed battery performance
which will highlight which
days you are using your
device the most. It will
also show if the battery is
performing inconsistently.
Tap to view
Tap any of the displayed
bars to see the bottom half
of the screen change. It will
display detailed app usage
for the day you have chosen
and the other bars will be
greyed out.
The power

For how long?
The list of apps is displayed
in order with the most power
hungry at the top. Chances
are that a handful of apps will
dominate your usage which
may be perfectly normal for
most users.
When you select Activity you
will see for how long an app
has used the battery rather
than in percentage terms.
This helps to highlight apps
that are running for longer
than you expect.
Streamline with Shortcuts
Shortcuts will help you automate repetitive tasks that otherwise get in the way
Siri has gained a new use in iOS 12 by letting you
create your own shortcuts for commonly used tasks.
No matter what you want to do it takes seconds to

you can create as many as you like. Potentially, you will
find yourself using this feature every day.
2 Build a shortcut
Tap the record button and record a
phrase to relate to the new action. Tap
?Done? and it will be available in the future.
3 It?s also proactive
Siri also suggests actions on the lock
screen. These supplement the manually
created shortcuts perfectly.

What else?
There are many changes in iOS 12 that you may not be
aware of, but they are powerful in the right hands
Apple has not just added a few new standout features to
iOS 12 and left it at that. The company has added many
changes in the background that can be adjusted to your
needs to make the overall experience even more suited
to your needs. Indeed, there are more than 100 so we
can?t cover them all. Instead we will show you some of
the smaller tweaks you can undertake to get just a little
more out of your iPhone or iPad.
1 Air quality
2 Don?t stay awake
4 One swift movement
5 Reachability can scroll 6 Better marking up
Scroll down in the Weather app and
you can view the current air quality. The
UV Index is also shown, both of which are
useful for anyone with breathing problems.
On an iPhone X you no longer need
to tap the ?x? to close an app in the app
switcher. Simply bring up the switcher and
swipe up on the app you want to kill.
The new Bedtime option in Do Not
Disturb will ensure that notifications are
not shown on the lock screen if you wake
up and pick up your phone.
You can now scroll through the
contents of an app in Reachability mode.
This fixes a long-standing omission in iOS
which will suit those who use the feature.
As you can see it does not take much to be able
to utilise all of the newest features and changes in
iOS 12. As is typical Apple, each feature is designed
to be used by anyone regardless of their technical
knowledge or their age and to become an iOS 12
?genius? merely involves knowing what has changed,
3 More flexible CarPlay
Waze and Google Maps are now
supported in CarPlay alongside select
others, making your inbuilt car system a lot
more future-proofed and flexible.
The pen width can now be tweaked
when marking up an image which makes
the feature more suited to professional
demonstrations when at work.
how the new features work and then just jumping in
and making the most of what is there. Anyone can
become an iOS 12 genius with a little bit of practice
and we hope that you really do enjoy getting to know
the smoothest and most advanced mobile operating
system in the world today.

our iPhone can capture a special moment in time as a
Live Photo. After shooting in LIVE mode you can hold
your finger on the Live Photo to play a three-second
movie. Live Photos can be edited in Apple?s Photos app to boost
colour saturation and fix problems with exposure. Because
a Live Photo is a series of stills, Photos uses one frame of
footage (a Key Photo) to represent the Live Photo?s contents in a
thumbnail. We?ll show you how to change the Key Photo to make
a Live Photo?s contents easier to identify. We?ll demonstrate how
to share your favourite frame from the movie as a still image.

inal Cut Pro X?s re-timing tools enable us to slow down
time and analyse action. We can also speed up footage
to create time-lapse-style clips. However, re-timing a
clip that?s been filmed at 25 frames per second can produce
inferior results. To make a clip run slower, Final Cut Pro has to
insert extra frames. This can produce slow-motion footage that
stutters. By speeding up footage you get faster movement, but
it looks too smooth and lacks the jerky jump cuts present in a
true time-lapse sequence. Here we?ll show you how to re-time
a typical 25 fps clip to demonstrate Final Cut Pro?s re-timing
tools. We?ll also work with footage shot at different frame rates to
demonstrate better-looking slow-motion and time-lapse scenes.

GarageBand
Add new classic
Vintage Mellotron

Learn how to apply preset sound patches to tracks,
discovering five fresh synths in GarageBand?s library

A
s part of its 10.3 update back in July,
GarageBand announced a nice handful of new
additions that included new loops, Drummers
and even far eastern instruments. Within all the
goodness was the introduction of five Vintage Mellotron
patches for applying classic synth sounds to project
tracks. The obvious publicised comparisons here were
for emulating Beatles-esque tracks such as Strawberry
GarageBand?s new Vintage Mellotrons allows you to apply a
retro tinge to your projects
Fields Forever, much loved for its iconic 1960s Mellotron
tones. For those unaware, GarageBand?s patch library
is used to select from a huge collection of preset
instruments, sounds and effects for both audio and
software (MIDI) tracks. The latter is where these new
Mellotron synths apply, so in this guide we?ll identify
where to find them, how to add them to tracks and also
how to shape their sound via Smart Controls.
Controls considered
We overview the Vintage Mellotron?s Smart Controls panel
Sound blend
The Mellotron synth
combines two sounds to
achieve that classic chorus
effect, with a set of ten that
can be chosen from the
pair of dropdown menus,
using the Blend control
below to mix them.
Attack to Tone
These first four controls adjust (from
anti-clockwise) Attack, Release,
Tone and Tape Speed. The first
basically stipulate synth key attack,
release and the tone of the sounded
note, while Tape Speed profoundly
affects Mellotron performance.
Knowledge base
Mellotron matters
To better appreciate the Mellotron
tones, it?s worth understanding how
the instrument works. As a precursor
to the modern sampler, this innovative
piano ?synth? actually used analogue,
magnetic tape strips. With each key
press, a tape head like those used
in cassette players would press to
the tape to sound it, manipulating
controls such as tape speed to achieve
distinctive effects.
30
190
Transposing pitch
Transpose allows you to
basically switch the pitch of
each blended sound by an
octave, using these dropdowns
to pick -12 to lower or +12 to
raise up, with zero returned
back to normal pitch.
Phaser to Reverb
A final four controls relate much
more to Mellotron effects across
(from clockwise) Phaser, Delay,
Reverb and Amp. The first few are
self-explanatory, while Amp adds
further amplification to get a bigger
Wurlitzer organ type feel.
Note that the five Vintage Mellotron patches are actually just one instrument
with suggested presets applied that are editable via Smart Controls (B).
Step-by-step Add classic Mellotron synth sounds
1 MIDI-based Mellotron
2 Vintage Mellotron
3 3 Violins
4 Cello or Flute?
5 Mixed Choir
6 Strings & Flute
1 Flutes doubled
2 Eerie effects
The new Mellotron patches are for use
with green software instrument or MIDI
tracks, using a MIDI keyboard or any green
Apple Loops found in the loop browser (O).
The next two Mellotron patches provide
?Cello? sounds doubled an octave lower
when Blend is applied, while ?Flute? is again
solo until ?String Section? is blended in.
With a MIDI track selected, show
the patch Library (Y) and pick ?Vintage
Mellotron?, then ?3 Violins? before showing the
Smart Controls panel with the B key.
Switch to Mixed Choir and Male and
Female Choir sounds are blended (4) by
default to create that harmonious chorus
effect synonymous with a Mellotron sound.
The default patch now applied, this
particular one has two sounds selected but
only plays 3 Violins, adding the Boys Choir
when Blend is turned clockwise.
Again, swapping to the final Vintage
Mellotron patch we find that String Section
and Flute sounds are selected by default,
which you can customise completely.
Strawberry Fields
whenever
With the Mellotron famously employed
by the Beatles to great psychedelic
effect, we?ll now take a look at how
that very sound can be emulated using
GarageBand?s new patches. With any
one of them applied to your track, show
the Smart Controls panel via View>Show
Smart Controls or press the B key. Here
you can access a range of controls for
shaping the sound, which we?ll use now to
achieve a Strawberry Fields Forever vibe
worthy of the Fab Four.
Start with any patch, but ?Flute? most
likely. Double the first Flute in Sound 1 with
another Flute in Sound 2. Then set the first
Transpose to -12 and the Blend dial to 90%.
For our Beatles emulation we?ve opted
for Attack (3), Tape Speed (1) and Tone
(4) with Phaser (6), Amp (6) and a minimal
amount of Reverb (1) for analogue warmth.

Step it up
At the heart of Step FX are three Step
Modulators that resemble early step
sequencers. You create sequences by
switching on steps that turn the chosen
parameters on, off or anywhere in
between depending on their height and
the setting of the Depth control. Each
sequence can have up to 128 steps
and is synced to your project?s tempo.
Spend a few minutes flicking through the presets to appreciate what Step FX
is capable of. Do this by clicking the arrow buttons below the preset name.
Step-by-step Transform a piano with Step FX
1 Import audio
2 Insert Step FX
3 Audition effect
4 Switch pattern
5 Smooth it out
6 Open the gate
7 Create a polyrhythm
8 Pan time
9 Round it off
Start by importing the audio files ?Step
FX Track.wav? and ?Step FX Piano.wav? from
FileSilo onto two separate audio tracks in an
empty Logic project at 120bpm.
Click ?Custom? and change Step
Modulator 1?s setting to Factory>Syncopated
02. Each step opens the filter right out, narrow
steps opening and closing the filter faster.
Shorten the sequence to five steps by
dragging the right-hand edge over to the left.
Click to remove steps 2 and 5, then click
between steps 3 and 4 to tie them together.
On the piano track, insert an instance of
Step FX by clicking on the Audio FX slot in the
Channel Inspector and choosing Multi Effects>
Step FX>Stereo.
Now set Step Modulator 1?s Depth to
50%, and the Filter?s Cutoff Frequency to
around 260Hz. This makes it so that the filter
doesn?t completely close on each empty step.
Click the button to enable Step Modulator
3, which is already set to control the panning of
the sound in the stereo image so that it flows
smoothly from left to right.
By default, only the Filter and Reverb
are active, with Step Modulator 1 already
controlling Filter Cutoff. Hit ?Play? to listen ? the
steps illuminate as the part loops.
Enable Step Modulator 2 by clicking the
power button next to ?Gate Mix?. Drag vertically
on the numbers in the Envelope section to set
the Attack to 0%. and Hold to 50%.
To finish, bring the effect to life by clicking
the power buttons in the Mod FX, Delay
and Distortion modules. Dial the Distortion
module?s Dirt control up to around 20%.

macOS
Turbo-charge your Mac!
Does your Mac feel sluggish? Then here are some tips for
giving it a welcome speed boost
Difficulty
Time needed
10
O
ver time the efficiency of our Macs tends to dip and
they become sluggish. There are numerous reasons
for this? Perhaps you have recently updated your
Mac operating system and the efficiency of some of your apps
is suffering as a result. Or maybe you have too many apps
open that you just don?t need? It may just be that your hard
drive is congested with junk files that you don?t know you can
simply delete. Whatever the reason for the downturn in overall
performance, there are quick and easy fixes that you can carry
out that won?t cost you a bean. Here we guide you through
some and recommend a good, free app for decluttering your
Mac?s hard drive.
Optimise your Mac
If the simple methods don?t yield significant results, there
are plenty of decent third-party Mac cleaning apps
Use Activity Monitor
Activity Monitor is a very useful
app for helping you monitor various
aspects of app usage. For example,
you can see which apps use the
most memory, present the biggest
drain of your MacBook battery, etc.
Quick ways to improve performance
Check updates
Apps performing
sluggishly may be an
indication that they are
out of date with your new
operating system. Go to
the ?Updates? in the App
Store to see if any newer,
more stable versions of the
app are available.

Minimising windows
When trying to reduce the number of
visual effects your Mac uses in order
to eradicate slowdown, go to System
Preferences>Dock, as per ?Step 6? and
then change the ?Minimize windows
using:? option from ?Genie Effect?
to ?Scale Effect? for a much more
straightforward, less CPU-intensive
transition effect. Every little helps!
36
190
A simpler Dock
Processing power is used every
time you call up your Dock if it
isn?t ever-present on your screen.
You should also disable things like
?Animate opening applications?
and ?Minimize windows into
application icon?.
Ditch the effects
Visual effects are common in
Mac operating systems ? snazzy
ways to present basic actions,
such as minimising windows. Go
to System Preferences>Dock and
you will be able to turn off many of
these effects.
Keep your apps up-to-date by going to App Store>Preferences and ticking
?Automatically check for updates? and the sub-categories relating to it.
Step-by-step Steps to speeding up your Mac
1 Update your apps
Outdated apps in newer operating
systems can prove to be glitchy and sluggish,
so launch the App Store, click on ?Updates?
and update every app that you can.
2 Check Activity Monitor 3 Monitor Energy
Launch Activity Monitor, select View>
Windowed Processes and click on ?CPU? to
check the biggest drainers on your Mac and
consider quitting anything you don?t need.
4 Deactivate startup items 5 Disable apps
Your Mac may be sluggish due to an
array of open apps that booted up at startup.
Go to System Preferences>Users & Groups,
click on your name and click on ?Login Items?.
If you see apps that you don?t need
open, click on the padlock icon and enter
your administrator?s password, click on the
app name and then click on ??? underneath.
If you are using a laptop, while in Activity
Monitor, click on ?Energy? to see which apps
drain the most energy from your battery. If
power is getting short, close unused apps.
6 Turn off effects
The macOS has visual effects that slow
down older Macs with the latest operating
systems. Go to System Preferences>Dock
and uncheck boxes such as ?Magnification?.
Try a third-party app
There are also plenty of apps available to
help defrag and declutter your Mac and
speed up the performance and one of our
favourites is Dr Cleaner: Disk, Mem Clean.
A free version of this app is available from
the App Store and, when launched, it will
operate as a neat little menu bar item that
you can click on to get a performance
overview of your Mac. This app is also very
good at identifying useless files on your
Mac and deleting them to free up space.
1 Start optimising
With Dr Cleaner installed, in the menu
bar click ?System Optimizer?. Ensure you are
in the ?Junk Files? section and click on ?Scan?.
The app will now search for superfluous files.
2 Delete old clutter
Once the scan has been carried out,
you will be able to see all the junk files on
your Mac and how much space they take up.
Review the list and consider dumping them.

System Preferences
Make your Mac easier to use
Spend some time configuring System Preferences to
make working on your Mac easier and quicker

W
henever we get our hands on a brand new Mac
we always spend some time going through all the
settings in System Preferences to tweak them to
just the way we like them. The settings we choose depends on
whether we are using an iMac with a big screen or a MacBook
with a tiny one, so there is not a single best way to configure a
Mac. Here we have listed most of the settings we tweak and if
you have not done so already, go through them and set them as
you prefer. They make your Mac easier to use and this means
you will be more productive when working on it. Get tweaking!
There are loads System Preferences tweaks you can make
to personalise your Mac?
Step-by-step Customise settings to simplify tasks
1 Keyboard shortcuts
2 Dictate, don?t type
4 Use the zoom
5 Customise the display 6 Sleep better
Work faster and easier using keyboard
shortcuts. Apps show keyboard shortcuts on
their menus and you can see macOS shortcuts
by opening Keyboard in System Preferences.
If you chose a high res display, go to
Accessibility>Zoom and tick ?Use scroll gesture
with modifier keys?. Hold down Ctrl and push
up with two fingers to zoom the screen.
38
190
Go to System Preferences>Keyboard>
Dictation and enable it. Press Fn twice and
anywhere you normally type text, you can
dictate instead ? faster and easier than typing.
Click Accessibility>Display and there are
nine settings here for tweaking the display
settings. We like to reduce motion and
transparency, and to shake the mouse pointer.
3 Screen resolution
Go to Displays, select ?Scaled? and
choose between larger text and more screen
space. More Space is useful on small screen
MacBooks to fit more on the desktop.
It is thought that blue light stops you
sleeping at night, so go to Displays>Night Shift
and select a schedule to reduce blue light and
increase red in the screen display.
There are no right or wrong settings here so don?t copy our settings, choose
the ones that work best for you and make the Mac easier to use.
Configure general preferences
Customise settings for ease of use
Sidebar icon size
This setting affects the
sidebar in Finder windows
and choosing the Small
size enables more items
to be shown and more
favourite folders to be
added, which makes
accessing them easier.
Hide the menu
The screen display on
some MacBooks is only
12 or 13 inches and hiding
the menu bar when it is
not being used gives you
more screen space for
your apps. Try it, you might
prefer it.
See scrollbars
Scrollbars at the right
side of windows take up
valuable screen space, but
if they are hidden they can
be awkward to use. Try
all three settings and see
which one is best for you.
Close windows
Do you prefer apps to
continue where you left off
last time with all windows
open, or do you want a
fresh start? Try this off and
on with an app like TextEdit
and see which is easier.

Touch Bar options
This is not a complete list and the
Touch Bar adds more features that can
make your Mac easier to use. If your
MacBook has one, use the controls in
System Preferences to register your
fingerprint and then use it to unlock
your Mac, with Apple Pay, and iTunes
and the App Store. Get to know the
Touch Bar shortcuts in apps.
7 Customise the Dock
There are many options here and a couple
of useful ones are to automatically hide and
show the Dock, and whether to use tabs when
opening documents. Choose your settings.
8 Trackpad clicks
There are many settings for the trackpad
and there are two and three finger taps,
clicking speeds, tracking speed, force click
options and more. Learn the trackpad tricks.
9 More trackpad gestures
Select the More Gestures tab and there
are many more trackpad swipes and gestures.
Four have addition options. Practise them and
learn them to make using your Mac easier.

Merge your folders in MacOS
Bring items contained in two folders together in one by
unlocking the secret Merge function within Finder

re you working on a project that has resulted in files
being spread across two folders with the same name?
Then you may get to a point when you want to bring
them together for convenience. With macOS, you can do just
that, creating a single, merged folder that only contains the most
recent version of your files to eliminate any future confusion.
All of this would be well and good if it wasn?t for the fact that
the option is actually hidden behind a keypress. Once you?ve
worked through this tutorial, however, you?ll know what you have
to do. It?s great for people who work from different locations or
who use different folders for various stages of a project, and
should make for a tidier workflow.
Merging folders is a good way to stay organised and keep
an uncluttered workspace
Use Terminal to merge folders
Only have changes in subfolders? Then try a different approach
Type ditto
Once you?ve opened Terminal
which you will find in your
Applications>Utilities folder,
type the word ?ditto? and
press the space bar.
Click your note
Finder will not consider the
contents of subfolders if
there are no changes to the
top-level folders that you are
merging. The Ditto command
in Terminal, however, gets
around this restriction.
Knowledge base
40
Enter the
destination folder
Enter the
source folder
Type the destination folder
pathname or drag the folder
to the Terminal window. Press
Enter and the merging will
begin with the top-level folder
before working down through
the subfolders.
Type the pathname of the
source folder first. An easy
way to do this is to find the
folder and simply drag it
to the Terminal window.
Press the space bar after
doing so.
190
Why can?t I see the
Merge option?
You will only be able to merge two
folders if one of them contains files that
are not within the other folder. Should
they both contain different versions of
identically named files, Apple explains
that your only options will be to replace
one folder with another or else stop the
process from taking place.
It?s worth bearing in mind that when you merge folders, the files in the folder
from which you dragged and dropped are not deleted.
Step-by-step Merge folders with identical names
1 Locate two folders
2 Make a choice
3 Try it again
4 Select Merge
5 Open it up
6 Final results
1 Note similar files
2 Keep the new
Let?s say you have two folders with the
same name in different locations. You could
try dragging one of them into the location of
the other using your mouse or trackpad.
You will now see a new option called
Merge. As the name suggests. clicking this
will merge the two folders rather than replace
one of them. The files will copy across.
If you do, then you?ll see a pop-up
prompt telling you that one of the folders is
more recent than the other. You?ll be asked if
you want the older version to replace it.
You can now open the folder to check
everything has worked as it should. Here we
see what our folders looked like before we
merged them ? both contained six files.
This, however, is not ideal because
clicking Replace will cause a folder to be
deleted. Instead, try dragging and dropping
again, but press the Option key this time.
And this is our result: a single folder
containing 12 files. You could, of course,
drag and drop individual files between
folders but this process is much faster.
View the changes
made to a folder
When you seek to merge a folder, you will
be informed that the process will preserve
all of the newer items. In other words, if
you have two versions of the same file in
both folders, then the one which you have
worked on and saved more recently will be
the one that is retained. The other version
will be overwritten in the merged folder.
The idea is that the merged folder contains
only the most up-to-date files.
Here are two files of the same name
(iCreate How To 1.doc) in two folders of the
same name (Articles). One of those files was
modified at 14:09 and the other at 14:18.
After merging the two folders, there is
only one file called iCreate How To 1.doc ?
the one created at 14:18. The one produced
nine minutes earlier has been replaced.

Create an invisible folder
How to make a folder on your Mac that cannot be seen by anyone

W
hen you share a Mac with other family members
within the same household, you may not want
to keep switching accounts whenever someone
else wants to use it. But what if you have lots of important
work stored on the Mac that you don?t want anyone else to
see or interfere with? One solution is to create an ?invisible?
folder that only you know about. In previous Mac operating
systems this could be done by creating a folder, opening
your Terminal app, typing ?chflags hidden? into Terminal and
then dragging the folder into the Terminal window to make it
vanish. However, there is an even simpler way, which we will
demonstrate here
Your invisible archive
Creating an invisible folder not only helps protect your files,
it also means you keep a tidy desktop too!
Folder info
Highlighting the folder
and then pressing Cmd+I
will bring up an info
window ? this is where you
can highlight the folder
thumbnail and replace it
with an invisible image.
Protect your files from prying eyes
Finding
the folder
When you have created
an invisible folder, you can
position it where you want
on the desktop ? drag it
and then click and hold on
the desktop nearby and
drag over it to find it again.
Knowledge base
Hide other folders
Once created, you can use your
invisible folder as a gateway to access
other non-invisible folders on your
desktop. Simply drag other files and
folders into your invisible folder and
they will not only be safe from prying
eyes, but your desktop will be nice
and tidy too!

Renaming
your folder
Moving items inside
Double-click to open your
invisible folder and then you
can drag any other files and
folders from your desktop
inside to help protect them from
prying eyes.
You can also rename the
folder within the ?Get Info?
window. By replacing letters
with spaces you can make
the folder invisible. Now
simply close the window to
apply the changes.
You can also rename your folder by highlighting it, pressing Cmd+I and then
typing a name in the ?Name & Extension? box. Close the window to apply.
Step-by-step Create a hidden folder
1 Create a folder
2 Take a screenshot
3 Delete image
4 Copy and paste
5 Get folder info
6 Paste image
1 Rename your folder
2 Finding the folder
Click on your desktop and go to
File>New Folder or press Shift+Cmd+N to
create a new folder. When the folder has
been created, give it a name.
With the screenshot still open, press
Cmd+A again to ?Select All?, in this case the
empty grey void, then press Cmd+C to copy
it to your clipboard. Close the screenshot.
The next step involves opening any
image in the Preview app, so to speed things
up, just take a screenshot (Shift+Cmd+3) of
your desktop and then double-click it.
Click on your folder and press Cmd+I to
?Get Info?. In the pop-up window that appears
you will see a thumbnail of the folder in the
top-left corner. Click to highlight it.
When your screenshot has opened in
Preview, press Cmd+A to ?Select All?, in this
case all of the image, and then press Delete.
The image should now become a grey void.
With the folder icon highlighted, press
Cmd+V to paste the grey void onto the folder
thumbnail. As you will see, both the icon and
the physical folder will vanish ? like magic!
Make the folder
completely invisible
If you gave your folder a name (or left it
as the default title) earlier then only the
name will be visible on your desktop. You
can now make the folder totally invisible
by renaming it. The downside of this is
that the folder will be hard to locate again
unless you know where to look (this also
underlines what a good security measure
it is). You can get around this by clicking,
holding and dragging over the area where
the folder is.
Click to highlight the folder and then click
again on the name. Type alternate text in. To
make the folder completely invisible, name it
by tapping Space three times.
Drag the folder into place on the desktop
and click elsewhere on the folder to make
it invisible. Locate it again by clicking and
holding near the folder and dragging over it.

ven though you probably use Safari every day, you
may not yet have discovered the new options that
arrived with macOS High Sierra that allow you to
tailor the settings of individual websites. Using the new
configuration settings in Safari you can tell it to always
use Reader mode for one website to remove all of the
unnecessary clutter as soon as it loads, or to always zoom
in or out a little on another site to make it easier to read.
Annoying content can also be blocked on one website, but
allowed on another where it is not so bad or is even useful.
So now you can set up websites to work just the way you
want them to ? and it?s quick and easy.

It enables you to configure the default
settings for all websites and sites with
exceptions to them.

There are two parts to the sites list and
the top part shows the currently open

then choose the settings you want for
each of the websites.
Content blocking
The content blockers feature in Safari
is controversial because it can block
adverts to make web pages less
irritating. Website owners don?t like it
because it reduces their income and
adverts pay for many sites. Safari?s
content blockers do indeed block
some adverts, but not all of them. You
will still see some ads and it appears to
only block the worst.

There is a quick way to access
the settings for a website and that is by
Ctrl+clicking the URL in the address box.
Select ?Settings for This Website?.
A panel is displayed below the site URL
and the contents depends on the site. Use
the checkboxes at the top to choose whether
to use Reader mode and content blockers.
Audio and video on web pages can be
irritating and are often nothing more than
advertising. Click the Auto-Play setting in the
panel and set the site to ?Never Auto-Play?.
Websites may want to access hardware

Top 10 tips for...
Mastering Reminders
Discover how to get the most out of this most essential of Mac apps
T
here?s no denying the efficiency of
your Mac?s Reminders app. With it set
up you?ll never forget a thing and it is
designed to operate over iCloud so all of your
task lists will be synced to your iOS devices
too ? handy for when you set up location-based
reminders and the GPS on your iPhone detects
that you are nearby. As with most Mac apps
though, there is a lot more to Reminders than
first meets the eye. For example, there are
numerous ways to organise your tasks, manage
your lists and keep track of what you have to do
on any given day, so we have put together these
ten essential tips to make sure you are getting
the most out of your Reminders app and that it
is working as effectively as possible for ensuring
you never forget a thing.
Getting to know Reminders
Setting up tasks and reminders like a pro
times
1 addAutomatically
Instead of hovering your cursor over a
reminder, clicking on the ?i? icon and ticking
?On a Day? to add a time, simply write it into
the original text. If you write, for example,
?Meeting tomorrow at 3pm? then the time is
automatically added, saving you time.
2
Check schedule
If you have multiple reminders
scheduled for different times from different
reminder lists then you can view them
all in one place simply by clicking on the
?Scheduled? icon at the top of the Sidebar.
Handy for ensuring you always know
what?s coming up.
Show stuff
Click on the ?View? menu and
make sure that the Sidebar is
displayed. This provides quick
and easy access to your lists
and allows you to manage
them all more effectively.
Your lists
You can set up a new task list
by going to File>New List and
they will all appear in the Sidebar,
along with the ?Scheduled?
option ? click this to instantly see
all time-related tasks.
Task info
Click on the small ?i? icon next
to a task to display this menu.
Here you can schedule to be
reminded at a certain time
or by approaching a certain
location. You can also set
priorities here.
Knowledge base
Un-sharing lists
If you want to stop sharing a task list
with a particular person, click on the
broadcast icon next to the list in the
Sidebar and then select the participant
you no longer want to share with. A
small down-facing arrow should appear
? click on this and then choose ?Remove
Person?. You can also delete the entire
list to stop sharing it with everyone.

Task calendar
Go to View>Show Calendar
to make this appear in the
Sidebar. Days with tasks
assigned to them will have

easy reference. Click on a day
to add a task.
When Reminder notifications pop up you can click on the ?Later? option to
remind you in five minutes, an hour, tomorrow, or ignore altogether.
3
Check calendar
While in Reminders, go to View>Show Calendar to place a
calendar in the Sidebar. This is particularly useful because you can
then click on any given day and instantly see what reminders you
have scheduled for that day. Days with reminders scheduled will have
dots under them.
4
Set priorities
By clicking on the ?i? icon
you can also set priorities for your
reminders (Low, Medium or High),
after which ?!? icons will be placed
next to them. If you then go to
View>Sort by>Priority, your high
priority reminders will be moved to
the top of the lists.
Re-order
5 reminders

6 completed
You can also sort your reminders
and prioritise them into any order
that you want manually. Just click
and hold on the area to the left
of a reminder?s bullet point and
then you can drag it up or down
to change the order in the list. The
system is very flexible.
Click on any list in the Reminders
app and drag down on a trackpad
or Magic Mouse (or trackball on a
Apple/Mighty Mouse), then it will
display how many tasks you have
completed. Click on ?Show? to
view them all and you can re-use
old ones by setting a new time.
7
Add notes
By clicking on the ?i? icon next to a reminder you can also add
notes. Simply write what you want into the ?note? field in the pop-up
menu and this text will appear under the reminder. This is useful if you
have other jobs, queries, etc, related to the same task.

To create a family reminder
list, create a new list by going to
File>New List and give it a title.
Once you start adding tasks for
family members, hover your mouse
over the list name in the Sidebar
and click the broadcast icon. Now
type in Apple IDs into ?Share with?.

Edit lists
Right-clicking on the name
of a list in the Sidebar will bring
up a menu of options relating to
that list which you can customise.
For example, you can change the
header colour, rename the list,
open it in a separate window
and instantly mark all tasks as
being complete.

desired list in the Sidebar. You
can also hold the Alt key when
dragging to duplicate in both lists.

Create a Facebook Watch Party
Get a group of people together on Facebook to watch and

O
ne of the main benefits of a Facebook Group is the
ability to bring together people with similar interests,
whether it?s games, cooking or gardening. Now
Facebook is allowing you to go a step further by letting Group
leaders host what are being called Watch Parties. They let
participants view live or recorded video together at the same
time. They also allow people to leave comments and reactions
while the videos play. In each case, Groups are notified that
a party has started and participants can suggest videos to
view. Facebook reckons the feature will be particularly great for
tutorials, Q&As, workouts and special occasions. Or, of course,
for getting a load of people together to watch videos of cats.
Find great content for your Party

Where are my posts?
When a Watch Party ends, Facebook
will create a post on your Group page
showing your status update and the
videos that were included. Other
Group members can then react to this
in the usual way but all of the original
comments ? that is, those that were
made while the Party was running ? will
be stripped away.

6 End a Party
1 Click Invite button
2 Select members
Launch Facebook on your Mac and
open the page for your Group. Note that
Watch Parties are only available for Groups
and you can only create them on a desktop.
After selecting all of the videos you
need, click ?Done?. You?ll be taken back to
your status box where you?ll see your videos
listed at the bottom. You can now click ?Post?.
In the status box, you?ll see a new entry
called Watch Party. Click this and a pop-up
window will appear. You can write a status
update explaining what your Party is about.
Your Watch Party will begin. Content
plays to the left of the browser window and
the line-up of videos are listed to the right.
You can write messages and click emojis.
Select ?Add Video? and search for
content. When you come across videos you
like, click ?Add to Queue?. Get an overview of
those you?ve added by clicking ?View Queue?.
As the content plays, select ?Add Video?
to keep the Party going. You can also skip
back and forth: such actions will be seen by
others. Finish by clicking ?End Party?.
Invite people to your
Watch Party
Although members of your Group will be
able to join your Watch Party and enjoy the
videos that you select for them, it is also
possible to extend an invitation to specific
people. You may want to do this ? after
all, a party without any members is not
really a party. You?ll be able to see exactly
who is watching by looking at the bottom
of the screen for the avatar circles of each
participant. Someone important not there?
Then read on?
Click ?Invite? at the bottom-left of the
screen once your Watch Party has started.
The button is located next to your avatar and
those of other people watching your Party.
You can now go down the list of Group
members, clicking ?Invite? next to the name of
the people you wish to join in. You can also
search by name to locate specific people.

Hands
on with
watchOS 5
There are a host of big and small changes in watchOS 5
and together they create the smoothest wrist-based
operating system on the market today
A
pple?s slow and steady approach
to watchOS continues in version
5 with a few major new features
supplemented by a raft of small
changes that are designed to make the
user experience feel more natural on what
is a hard form factor to manipulate. There
is no getting around the fact that a watch,
no matter what size it is, is going to be
tricky to handle with human hands and the
more features you add, the more difficult it
becomes. It would appear that Apple is fully
aware of this and that the company is now
focusing on improving the core features
50
190
rather than adding lots of novelties that will
just get in the way.
When you consider that there are some
specific tasks that make up the majority
of usage, this approach makes perfect
sense. From telling the time to tracking your
activity to receiving and sending messages
when otherwise engaged, the Apple Watch
handles all of these extremely well and
in watchOS 5 everything just got a little
easier to handle. There are countless minor
changes which in some cases follow the
work done with iOS 12, which is to drill
down on the user experience and get rid
Hands-on with watchOS 5
of any small annoyances that
have been fed back in the past.
This does make a fundamental
difference to how the watch
works and the sense that the
hardware is working in tandem
with the software is stronger
than ever ? without question it
is the smoothest and easiest
to use smart watch operating
system on the market today.
The addition of fitness
challenges will inspire people
to try harder and to stay
continually connected to
others, and despite the lack of
third-party watch faces, which
many are asking for, the trend
towards usability is paramount.
This will be welcomed by
anyone who wants to use their
watch to supplement their day
rather than play with fancylooking features that add little
value. All Apple Watch models
are supported by watchOS 5
apart from the very first series
and so the vast majority will
have the opportunity to try the
new features and to see how
they work for them. We suspect
that the general response will
be more than positive.

The Apple Watch app will

Work it out
Within the changes to the
fitness aspects of the Apple
Watch, there are smaller
adjustments which will make
keeping fit a little easier than
before. The automatic workout
detection will ensure that you
do not miss credit for your
efforts and the screen that
appears is obvious from the
first time you view it. In our
tests it seems to pick up every
workout we tried and so could
potentially mean that you never
need to manually input a new
workout, but we would suggest
you do so anyway so that you
miss no part of each session.

The Apple Watch has
improved the fitness of millions
of people and there is no
stopping now as it seems Apple
is going to continue focusing on
this area in particular.
Stay connected
One of the minor enhancements is
that you can now connect to Wi-Fi
directly from your Watch
One area in which the Apple
Watch excels is in its ability
to keep you connected when
away from your iPhone and
this is especially true of the
cellular Series 3 model. Tweaks
have been made in regards
to connectivity in watchOS 5
and these include grouped
notifications which use
the smaller screen more
efficiently and which feel
similar to the new look
in iOS 12. You can now
connect directly to Wi-Fi as
well which may not seem
like a big change, but it
has the potential to offer
you a faster connected
experience and one that
will work more consistently
throughout the day.
Smaller changes include

Do Not Disturb
Taking extra Do Not Disturb options to the
Apple Watch is a good example of Apple
only porting functions that make sense on
the wrist. These new controls will come
in handy when you are in a meeting or
indeed no matter what else you are doing.
It shows that Apple is intent on adding
new functionality to the Apple Watch, but
without trying to overload it with novelties
that just get in the way.
Two taps
Simply turning Do Not Disturb
on now takes one extra tap,
but it is a worthwhile minor
inconvenience when you
consider the new options
onboard the Apple Watch.
One millisecond lost a day
is bearable.
The quiet hour
If you are unsure for how long
you need not be disturbed you
can select the 1 hour option.
It will turn itself off after 60
minutes at which point you can
enable it again if required.

Do Not Disturb can also be
turned on until you leave
your current location. This is
particularly useful when at work
or if you are doing something
specific at an address.

For those who do not like exact
schedules, Do Not Disturb can
be set for the whole night as

it can be done on the Apple

Hands-on with watchOS 5
A smarter Siri
Siri suits the Apple Watch form better than ever
before and is now a super-smart assistant
Siri has been greatly improved and is now visually more
obvious (1) and much more informative than previously. It is
able to predict what you need to know at specific times and
actually gets better at understanding you the more you use
it. Whether you want a playlist to be available for your daily
commute or if you need a nudge to start a workout (2) as
part of your daily routine, Siri will learn about you and use
this knowledge to help you get through the day with ease.
The standards including calendar appointments (3) remain
and the new and the old come together within a watch face
which seems to burst out of the relatively small dimensions
it resides within. As an option to obtain the most information
with just a glance (4) Siri now offers one of the most intuitive
wrist-worn solutions ever created. Even better, many thirdparty apps are supported to offer the most wide-ranging
repository possible to give you a feature that is likely to be the
one you use above all others. Ironically, Siri has found a place
on the Apple Watch that makes it work more naturally than on
an iPhone or Mac and in watchOS 5 it is obvious that Apple is
looking to build on that by making it even more useful.

A modern Walkie-Talkie
You may view this as a novelty feature and it kind of is, but it?s great fun
It?s not always the case that a message, voice call or
social network comment will be the best option and,
with this in mind, Apple has brought back a technology
from the past. The Walkie-Talkie feature in watchOS 5

is easy to set up and can be useful in situations such as
at a concert or simply when messing about. Sometimes
a feature can be there just for fun and this is definitely
the case with Walkie-Talkie.

More effective workouts
Few activities will benefit your health more than workouts, and
they have been improved significantly in watchOS 5
The humble Workout app has received a selection of
improvements in watchOS 5 including some that will be
greatly received by a dedicated minority. Hikers can now
choose a workout specifically for their needs and there
is also a new Yoga workout which will let you monitor

your progress over time. Steps per minute are tracked
while running which will help you to achieve your optimal
cadence thus reducing potential injuries and increasing your
witnessing efficiency. Real intelligence sits behind these
changes which only add to an already excellent solution.
2 Cadence is key
Monitoring your cadence and getting
it right will offer numerous benefits for
your fitness over time. Apple makes doing
so very easy.

of plentiful and minor tweaks
which offer benefits every time
you use your Apple Watch.
The latest weather
As usual with a watchOS
update, new watch faces
and customisation options
are available
54

An app that receives little
attention in iOS and watchOS
is Weather, but in the latest
version Apple has made some
changes and added useful
features. You can now edit
the city list on the watch itself
which is useful if you travel to
new places often. A simple tap
will allow you to switch between
temperature, conditions and
rain, and the extra sections
including wind speed, air
quality, UV index and a 10-day
forecast are welcome additions.
Perhaps the most impressive
part of these changes is
how subtly they have been
integrated in to the app and the
natural way all of the data is
accessible. The care that has
been taken in building the latest
version of the Weather app
shows that complexity can be
easy to manage on your wrist
and we look forward to further
improvements to the core Apple
Watch apps in the future.
A minor new look
Apple has offered some small
changes to the available watch
faces and the colour schemes
that you can customise within
Hands-on with watchOS 5
them. These are, however,
limited to a selection of new
colours and an updated Siri
watch face design. There is no
doubt that the faces available
work extremely well and that
they are reliable and easily
readable, but the argument for
more choice and the potential
for third-party developers to
be able to offer their own faces
grows stronger by the day. For
most aspects of Apple software
and hardware the sensitive
approach works extremely well
and gives us the tools we need
to get things done, but perhaps
the time has come in watchOS
for more choice to be offered to
developers and users alike.
A real challenge
When you are challenging a friend or foe,
fitness suddenly becomes a lot easier
There is nothing better at motivating you to work
harder than competing with a friend in a multi-day
challenge and Apple has jumped on the bandwagon
in watchOS 5. Even though this kind of challenge
feature is available from the likes of Fitbit and

fitness more connected

The Mail app has been optimised for
the smaller screen?
Better Mail
Mail may appear to be an app
that does not fit within the
watch form factor, but when
you are busy and need to know
who has tried to contact you
the ability to see the current
situation is important. This is
particularly true for work and
so Apple has continued to
strengthen its smallest email
offering with a few changes
that will help you work as well
as play with your Apple Watch.
Web content can be viewed on

but remember to ensure that
your own stats are improving

More subtle tweaks
There are many smaller changes in watchOS 5 which come
together to make a more efficient and pleasurable experience
The user experience, and especially one on a watch,
requires a great deal of development to ensure that
it never feels clunky and this will require looking
deep under the hood to see what tiny parts can
be tweaked. Fortunately Apple is the master of
this and has looked at every interaction and made
changes that could easily be missed. The company
is obsessive about this level of detail and we benefit
from an improved experience, even if we do not
always notice the changes.

You can now open
the Control Centre and

they are always accessible

beneficial change.
The ability to change the
location of the Control Centre
widgets is now also available
on the Apple Watch itself. You
may only access it once, but if
it helps your workflow that is a
good thing.
4 A big button
5 What time is it? 6 New colours
A good example of the
level Apple has gone to with
the changes is in the Timer
app where a new and larger
?Custom? button resides. It
makes creating custom timers
just a little easier.
Another minimal and
useful change is in the way
the sunset and sunrise times
are displayed in the World
Time app. Again, it is easy to
miss, but it is visually more
understandable than before.
The Weather app now
displays the air quality and UV
index so that you can ensure
you stay safe at all times. This
is particularly useful for those
with breathing difficulties and
fair skin.
There are new colour
options in some watch faces
which include Flash Light,
Peach, Denim Blue and a new
grey option for the Siri face.
Small changes that may suit
your tastes perfectly.
Prominent Haptics button has
been removed completely.
Messages has an updated
layout for the buttons and you
can now also add and remove
individual stocks in the Stocks
app. The Phone app has been
redesigned with new buttons
and the slightly smaller nearby
locations text fields in Maps
make for a cleaner look than
before. Aside from all of this
there are new buttons in the
Dock and redesigned buttons
in Find My Friends. The list
continues with Student ID cards
and the new ability to simply
raise your wrist to activate Siri.
You no longer need to say ?Hey
Siri? which is one of the more
obvious and practical benefits
within watchOS 5.
Slow and steady
progress
For the most part, watchOS 5
will feel almost entirely the same
as watchOS 4, but with some
additions that will particularly
suit those who are serious
about their fitness and users
who try to make the most out
of every feature. Apple has no
doubt realised that making a
smart watch functional and
easy to use is more important
than cramming new features
in, and we have no doubt that
this is the correct way forward.
As the market moves from
traditional timepieces, which
have dominated for the past
100 years, to devices that can
offer crucial features on our
wrists 24 hours a day, there will
be a need for easy functionality
to move as many people to the
new technology as possible.
Just like with smartphones, the
moment they became easy to
use was the moment that the
growth became exponential.
Apple sees the future of the
smart watch with crystal clear
clarity and the fact that the
changes in watchOS 5 may
not grab too many headlines is
actually a good thing.

U
ntil very recently, hackers have been able to crack
an iOS device by plugging special USB tools into
the Lightning port. This would grant them full
access to a locked iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and it also
proved rather handy for law enforcement agencies.
To make Apple?s mobile tech even more secure, the
company has taken action by implementing a new security
feature. It prevents any USB accessories that are plugged
into the Lightning port from connecting to your iDevice if it
has been locked for more than an hour.
The effect is that it makes it harder to crack passcodes
and get around iOS?s encryption methods. No longer will
it be easy to try every combination of a passcode. Instead,
after an hour, the Lightning port can only be used to
charge an iOS device.
Make sure you update your iPhone or iPad to the latest
version of iOS to change the USB permissions
Step-by-step Test and change USB permissions
1 Install iOS 11.4.1
Ensure you have iOS 11.4.1 or above
installed on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
by going to the Settings app, tapping General
and selecting Software Update>Install.

2 Unlock your device
Lock your iDevice and plug in a USB
accessory, or your Mac or PC. This will show
that you must unlock your iDevice for the
accessory to gain access. Unlock it again.
3 Launch Settings app
Now with the iDevice unlocked, the USB
accessory will remain connected and in use ?
even if the iDevice is then locked. Don?t want
such hassle? Launch the Settings app.
By disabling data access to the Lightning port an hour after an iDevice has
last been unlocked, wannabe-hackers have less time to perform their attacks.
Allow access to USB accessories
Explore how USB Restricted Mode works on your iDevice
Default position
If you want to benefit from
USB Restricted Mode,
then don?t do a thing. It is
automatically enabled
by default.
Quick fix
Need to disable the USB
connection in a rush? Activate
the Emergency SOS Mode by
pressing the side button five
times in quick succession. The
USB port will be disabled.
On for off
When this button is on, the USB
Restricted Mode is turned off.
It?s a little mind-bending but
logical when you realise green
means you?re allowing access
when the iDevice is locked.
Knowledge base
Are all loopholes closed?
Apparently not. Cybersecurity firm
Elcomsoft says iOS 11.4.1. devices that
have not yet entered USB Restricted
Mode can be hacked if a compatible
accessory such as the official Lightning
to USB 3 Camera Adapter is inserted.
This resets the one-hour duration
and allows the iDevice to be kept
accessible beyond the 60-minute limit.
4 Enter your passcode
Scroll down the screen and tap the entry
for Face ID & Passcode (on an iPhone X: it?s
Touch ID & Passcode). Enter your passcode
when you are prompted.
Charge-only
Once the USB Restricted
Mode has kicked in, the device
will need to be unlocked if
you want any accessories
to connect. Otherwise the
Lightning port will only let you
charge the device.
5 Alter the Settings
Again, scroll down the screen until you
reach the settings for Allow Access When
Locked. By default, USB accessories will not
be allowed access when the iDevice is locked.
6 Turn USB off
Toggle the USB Accessories switch
to green and the USB Restricted Mode will
deactivate. Plugging in USBs will now work
regardless of the device being locked or not.

The internet speed test and Wi-Fi

something called ping, but what is
it? Ping is the length of time it takes

measured in milliseconds and a low
ping time means a fast response and
therefore a better network connection.

enable the feature in this app. It can be
turned on or off as you require and it
is very easy to use. Let?s take a look at
content blocking.
1 Enable Content Blocking 2 Allow the blocker
Select ?Adblock?. It is turned off initially
and you must change some settings before
it will work. Press ?Enable Content Blockers?

than you may have discovered. For example, you can
configure the Mailboxes home screen to add filters to
display only certain messages, such as unread ones, those with
attachments, emails from VIP senders (your friends and family),
and so on. Did you know it is possible to receive a PDF file by
email, open it, annotate it and forward it to someone else without
leaving your email? Using Mail on the iPhone you can attach files
stored on your Mac, which is great if you are out and someone
asks for a file. Here?s how to do this and more?

more convenient way to pay for goods and
services ? more so even than contactless card
payments as they involve opening your wallet,
removing your card, etc. With Apple Pay you don?t
even need your wallet! In this guide we?ll show you
how to leave your wallet or purse at home and set
up payment through your iPhone, which is just as
effortless as the action of paying itself.
Once new card details have been added you
will need to verify them, which you do by entering
a passcode texted to you by your bank. For peace
of mind, make sure you turn on the option to
authorise Apple Pay using Touch ID, which you do
in Settings. Now, whenever you pay for anything,
you can authorise the payment instantly by tapping
your finger against your Touch ID Home button.
Step-by-step Add a card to Apple Pay
1 Open Wallet
Launch the Wallet app on your iPhone
and then tap on the blue ?+? icon in the topright corner. You will then be given a brief

Make your roaming
data go further
Is your mobile data being consumed far too soon?
Then here are some steps for stretching it
Difficulty

M
any of us are on mobile phone contracts that
only permit a finite amount of roaming data
usage a month, and if you use up this allocation
then you will either have to purchase more or do without
roaming data altogether for the rest of the month.
Thankfully there are many ways in which you can make
adjustments to your iPhone settings to help preserve
your data allowance and make it stretch further, such
as disabling push notifications and background app
refresh. Rather annoyingly, many of the options and
settings that eat into your mobile data are enabled by
default and lay tucked away deep within the Settings
app so they can easily be missed.
If you want to make your mobile roaming data go further
each month, there are various things you can tweak within
Settings which should help?
Step-by-step Save your roaming data allowance
1 Disable Wi-Fi Assist
Go to Settings>Mobile Data and scroll
down to see if the ?Wi-Fi Assist? feature is on.
This utilises your mobile network if your Wi-Fi
coverage is poor so be sure to turn it off.
66
190
2 Stop apps
Listed in the Mobile Data section in
Settings are all of the apps that use mobile
data. If you are getting close to your limit, go
through the list turning off non-essential apps.
3 Disable Auto-Play
Facebook has a feature that auto-streams
videos as you scroll through your timeline. In
the app, go to Settings>Videos and Photos
and change to ?Never Auto-Play Videos?.
Twitter and Instagram also have Auto-Play options so open up the respective
apps? settings and disable them to preserve your roaming data.
Mobile data tips
Key options to be aware of in your Mobile Data settings
iCloud Drive
If you are short on data
then forget about using
iCloud Drive while out and
about. Turn off the option
here and make sure you
turn off options such as
Photo Stream too.
Wi-Fi Assist
This pesky option can be very
detrimental to your data as it calls
on mobile data to strengthen the
signal of poor Wi-Fi coverage.
Just turn it off and move to find
better Wi-Fi coverage!
Monitor data usage
Keep tabs on how much data
you are using by going to
Settings>Mobile Data and
checking your current period
to get an idea of how much you
are using, then you can start
making restrictions.
Knowledge base
Use Reading List
Many of us use up mobile data by
reading stories on the web during work
commutes. However, if you get up five
minutes earlier, access your favourite
news site, tap on the stories that you
want to read and hit the share button,
you can then use the ?Add to Reading
List? option to store offline versions
of the stories.
4 Stop fetching mail
Having your iPhone automatically search
for new emails can consume your data. Go to
Settings>Accounts & Passwords>Fetch New
Data and turn off ?Push?.
Reset data
It is good practice to get into the
habit of resetting your mobile
data statistics (preferably on the
day that your data allowance
resets) to accurately monitor
your usage.
5 Prevent apps refreshing 6 Push Notifications
You also don?t want apps refreshing
content in the background. Go to Settings>
General>Background App Refresh and either
turn it off completely or limit it to key apps.
Take measures to stop your apps from
sending you needless notifications. Go to
Settings>Notifications and you can determine
which apps notify you and how.

Recover your deleted
images in Photos
Removed an image from one of your folders in Photos
and panicking it?s lost forever? It may be retrievable

F
irst things first: if you?re worried about losing stuff on
your iOS device, then be sure to back up your data
both via iCloud and physically through iTunes. Doing
so is the most failsafe way of ensuring that accidentally
deleted photos and files can be recovered. It also covers
your back if your iPhone or iPad is ever stolen ? data can
often feel more valuable than the device itself.
In such instances, you?ll only need to retrieve the
backup at a later date to recover your items. But what
if you?ve only recently deleted a photo in error and you
decide you want to get it back? Well, the good news is
that images are not always lost forever and, if you react
in good time, there?s a high chance of success. What?s
more, this is a very straightforward process.
If you accidentally delete images off your iOS device then
they can be easily recovered in the Photos app?
Step-by-step Find and retrieve deleted images
1 Open Photos app
When you delete your images in Photos
on your iOS device, they?re not lost forever.
Not for a while anyway. To retrieve them,
launch the Photos app and tap ?Albums?.
68
190
2 Keep scrolling
Scroll down the screen until you see an
album called Recently Deleted. It will tell you
how many items are contained within the
album and you can select it by simply tapping.
3 View deleted photos
You can now view the images that you
have recently removed. Overlaid on to each of
the photos, is an indication of how many days
you have left before the images are deleted.
Don?t forget: if a deleted photo is left untouched for around 40 days or if you
delete an image from the Recently Deleted folder, it is removed forever.
Rescue images via a web browser
If you sync your images with iCloud, then you can
retrieve them by going to icloud.com too
Recently deleted
Select ?Recently Deleted?
from the left-hand menu
bar. Any synced images
that have been removed
appear here, so long as
they haven?t overrun their
expiration time.
Log into iCloud
Go to iCloud.com on your
Mac (or PC). Log in with
your Apple ID/password.
Select the Photos app to
reach this screen. All images
synced with iCloud are here.
How to delete
your images
Just as on iOS you can
also delete images. Select
?Delete All? or tap ?Delete?
after you have selected the
photos you want to remove.
Knowledge base
Permanently delete images
Recover
Have you ever snapped an image
that you?d much rather was removed
entirely from your phone? If so, follow
the same steps as in our tutorial but
instead of selecting Recover, tap
?Delete?. If you do not do this, then
any images you initially remove from a
Photos album will linger for a set period
of up to 40 days.
4 Undelete the images
If you would like to retrieve any of the
images and place them back into the folder
from where they were originally deleted, tap
?Select? in the top right-hand corner.
Select any of the images
that you wish to keep and
select ?Recover? in the top
right-hand corner of the
screen. There is, however,
no option for ?Recover All?.
5 Select the photos
You can now choose the images that you
wish to keep. Tap ?Recover All? if you wish to
save the lot. Otherwise tap individual images.
This places a blue tick on each thumbnail.
6 Recover your images
If you do the latter, tap ?Recover? once
you?ve completed your selections. In both
cases, you?ll be prompted to confirm your
action. Once done, your photos are recovered.

A
t one time when a new iPhone or iPad was
switched on the first thing it did was tell you
to plug it into a computer with iTunes. This
requirement was abandoned a few generations down
the line and now iOS devices don?t need a computer.
However, it can still be useful to plug iPhones and iPads
into the Mac occasionally and here we show you some of
Backup and sync
Back up, restore, and sync iOS devices
Manually
sync music
Some people record audio
themselves or buy MP3s
and add them to iTunes.
Plug in the iPhone/iPad
and the files can be copied
from the Mac to the
iPhone or iPad. You can
also choose what syncs.
There are a few benefits of connecting your iOS
device to your Mac, old-school style?
the things you can do. You can check the battery, back
up the device and store the backups on the Mac?s disk,
take control of the music, transfer documents between
apps and more. Have you ever lost files, messages,
contacts and so on? There are also third-party utilities
that recover lost or deleted data from iOS devices
plugged into the Mac, too.
Restore iOS device
Click the Restore iPad or
iPhone button to reset
the device back to factory
settings with the latest version
of iOS. This can sometimes
revive a dead device or solve
serious problems.
Knowledge base
Do you need to plug in?
The short answer is no, you can
manage without plugging an iPhone or
iPad into a Mac. However, it increases
your backup and recovery options. It
also solves the storage problem if you
only have the free 5GB Apple offers.
When you have several devices, the
space is used up fast, but the Mac has
storage space to spare for backups.
70
190
Encrypt backups
If encryption is not enabled,
some personal information,
like health data, is not backed
up. Tick this checkbox to
make a complete backup of
everything. You then need to
provide a password.
Backup and Restore
It is useful to have other backups
apart from iCloud, so temporarily
switch to This Computer and
click ?Back Up Now?. Use Restore
Backup if you ever need to put
the device back as it was.
Some people have found that plugging an iPhone or iPad into the Mac and
syncing or backing up has increased the amount of free storage space.
Step-by-step Back up, restore backups and more
1 Create a backup
2 Restore a backup
3 Restore factory settings
4 Add audio files
5 Transfer files
6 Check the battery
1 Recover deleted data
2 Browse deleted items
iCloud backups are automatic but a 5GB
free account isn?t enough. Back up to your
Mac using iTunes. Plug in the iOS device,
select Summary and click ?Back Up Now?.
If you have audio from sources other
than iTunes you need to add it manually.
Select Music, tick ?Sync Music? and use the
options to copy tracks to the device.
If you have lost messages, contacts,
appointments, notes or had other problems,
restore a Mac backup created in iTunes.
Click ?Restore Backup? and select one.
Most apps work wirelessly and use
online storage, but a few still use this old
method of transferring files. Select ?File
Sharing? and add or save documents.
A fully functioning iPhone or iPad is
needed to restore an iCloud backup, so if a
serious problem prevents it from working,
use the Restore iPhone/iPad to get it going.
With the iPhone/iPad plugged in, check
the battery health with coconutBattery (www.
coconut-flavour.com). Select iOS Device and
check the Design Capacity bar is over 80%.
Recover lost data
If you have lost or broken your iPhone
or iPad, if it has a serious problem that
cannot be fixed with iCloud backups, if
you have lost messages, call history, or
other files, there are third-party tools that
can recover lost data or even get a nonfunctioning device working again. They
cannot perform miracles, but sometimes
they can solve problems. For example,
dr.fone ? Recover (drfone.wondershare.
com) and PhoneRescue (www.imobie.
com) can be useful. Free trials let you see
what they can recover.
Plug in your iPhone or iPad and run
dr.fone. Choose which type of data to recover
and then where to recover it from in the
sidebar, the device, iTunes or iCloud backup.
After scanning the device or backup,
deleted items are listed in categories. See
if you can find the lost items. If you want to
recover them, you need to pay and register.

Essential apps to increase the security of your iPhone
T
he iPhone is one of the most secure
phones available but there are still
situations and activities that are not
secure and an example of this is sending or
receiving emails. Are they encrypted? Could
someone else intercept them and read them?
You may want an encrypted email service.
You might lend your phone to your partner
or give it to your kids to play a game and keep
them entertained for a while. Once the phone is
in their hands they can access things you don?t
want them to see. You might want to hide your

certain period of time, like a
day, a week, and so on. Tap
the timer icon and choose
the length of time this email

M
essages on your Apple Watch has a very easy
way to reply to any incoming missives sent by
friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Trouble
is, the default replies which appear when you open a
message on your wrist are not always the ones that you
want to use right there and then so there?s a danger
you can fall out of the habit of using them. This is a pity
because they?ve proven to be a real time and finger saver.
As such, this is as good a time as any to reacquaint
yourself with the default replies or, indeed, discover them
for the first time if you were unaware of their existence.
It?s also a good opportunity to take a look through those
replies and either add more of your own or edit those that
already exist. By better personalising the messages to
suit your day-to-day use, you will find them infinitely more
useful and you?ll once again get great value from them.
You can personalise your message responses using your
own language and phrasing?
Step-by-step Edit and add default replies
1 Launch the app
Custom replies for use in Messages on
your Apple Watch need to be created on
your iPhone. So open the Watch app on your
iPhone and tap ?My Watch?.
74

2 Select Messages
Scroll down the screen until you reach
the list of apps that are built into your Apple
Watch and look for Messages. Tap this to be
taken straight to the app?s settings.
3 Tap Default replies
We want to create our own responses
to reply to any incoming messages but the
Watch already has many built-in. Scroll down
and select ?Default Replies?.
Try to make your own custom replies reflect the way you tend to speak and
respond. That way the recipient will feel they?re receiving a personal message.
Organise your Watch messages
Remove any default replies you do not need and organise the
others in the order you?re most comfortable with
Edit default replies
Tap ?Edit? in the top righthand corner to begin
managing your default
replies. The word will turn into
Done which you must tap
when you?re finished editing.
Turn replies on and off
Ordinarily the entry Smart Replies
at the top of this screen has a
green button next to it (it doesn?t
work in Edit mode so tap ?Done?
and it will appear). Sliding it to grey
turns smart replying off.
Delete replies
Red circles will appear next
to each of the replies. Tap a
circle next to a reply you do
not need and select ?Delete?
when it appears. The reply
will then be removed.

Digital Crown or your finger to scroll
down the screen. As you do so, you?ll
start to see the default replies. Simply
look for the one that you want and,
when you tap it, it will instantly form
a note at the bottom of the message
thread and send it.
4 View the replies
Take a look down the long list of default
replies. You can tap any of these to amend
them if you wish, using the keyboard to add a
little flourish for a more personal touch.
Rearrange replies
Tap and hold on a three-line
icon to the right of a default
reply and you?ll be able to
move it up and down the
screen. Drag it into a desired
position and let go.
5 Create new responses 6 Type a reply
To add a set of your own replies,
perhaps for work or close friends and family,
scroll down and tap ?Add Reply?. A blank
entry will be created.
Use the keyboard to type the custom
message you want to add to the list, then tap
?Done?. Tap ?Add Reply? to add more. These
will appear in the list on your Watch.

while you?ll still be able to enjoy all of the functionality that
you currently have on your wrist, future enhancements will
be sadly out of reach for you.
For many users, this will be frustrating. After all,
the device was only released in April 2015. But it?s
symptomatic of technology moving apace ? the singlecore processor is simply unable to cope with the demands
Apple would be unleashing on it. So what can you do?
Well, the answer is rather dramatic, we?re afraid. If you
want to benefit from watchOS 5, you?ll need to sell the
Series 0 and buy a later model. Whether or not that is a
new or used device is entirely down to preference.
The original Apple Watch won?t run watchOS 5 so you may
need to trade it in for a new model
Step-by-step Prepare your Watch for sale
1 Grab your Watch
Ensure your Watch and your iPhone
are close by each other and open the Apple
Watch app on your iPhone. Tap the Watch tab
at the bottom and tap your Watch.

2 Select your wearable
Your Watch will now appear on this next
screen, together with any other Watches you
may own. Simply select the ?i? button to the
right of the Watch you wish to sell.
3 Unpair your Watch
You will see an option in red called Unpair
Apple Watch. This is the one you need: tap it.
Unpairing a Watch also erases the device so
be absolutely sure you want to do so.
The first-gen Apple Watch is still a decent wearable ? perhaps consider giving
or selling it to a friend or family member as a cheap introduction to the device

Buy a used Apple Watch
A brand new Apple Watch Series 3 will
set you back at least 9. But you
could buy a used wearable. Consider
a Watch Series 2 from eBay or CEX
(uk.webuy.com): these will work with
watchOS 5 and, used, cost around
0. In the US, try the Apple Refurb
Store (https://www.apple.com/shop/
browse/home/specialdeals).
4 Confirm unpairing
In any case, you will be now be asked if
you really want to unpair your Apple Watch (to
use it again, you?d need to re-pair it). Select
?Unpair? from the pop-up to continue.
Questions galore
To get to this point, you?ll be
asked whether the Watch turns
on and is in good shape but
you?ll get a price which you can
accept by clicking ?Trade it in
for a gift card?.
5 Enter Apple ID
Now enter the Apple ID password
for your account. Doing so will disable the
Activation Lock, remove Find My Watch and
remove your device from your account.
6 Unpairing Watch
You?re now on your way to unpairing your
Watch after which point, you will be able to
sell the device without fear that anyone can
access any of your stored information.

Turn off password
prompts in Apple TV
For users sick of having to enter a password every
time an app is installed on Apple TV?
Difficulty
Time needed
5
T
here?s one thing we dread
seeing on Apple TV, and
that?s the password screen.
Although we know we can use our
iDevice to enter the password or
even call upon Siri and dictate it, we
invariably end up using the onscreen
keyboard to laboriously punch each
letter in, only to gnash our teeth when
we make a mistake.
Fortunately, there is a way of
turning this off when you?re installing
both free and paid-for apps ? or at
the very least have it activate after 15
minutes. Although it will leave your
device more vulnerable to someone
else downloading apps on to your
Apple TV, if you are the only person
using it or if you completely trust
others in your household, then it may
make your overall experience feel
more smooth and less frustrating.
You can disable password prompts so you
don?t have to type it at every purchase
Step-by-step Turn off password prompts
1 Open Settings app
If you don?t want the hassle of having to
input a password when you want to install an
app, launch the Settings app on your Apple TV
and navigate to the Accounts section.
78
190
2 Password settings
Now select the option iTunes and App
Store from the next screen before clicking on
?Password Settings?. You?ll be able to view and
assess your current password status.
3 Change the default
It?s most secure to set Require Password
to ?Always?, and ?Yes? for purchases, in-app
purchases and free downloads. Alter this by
clicking the top Require Password.
If you do not want to use the Apple Remote Keyboard, then you should go to
Settings>Notifications>Apple TV Remote Keyboard to turn it off.
Use your iOS device as a keyboard
If using the Siri Remote is putting you off entering
passwords on Apple TV, use your iDevice instead

key features
You must ensure that your
iOS device and Apple TV are
connected to Wi-Fi and that
Bluetooth is activated on
your iDevice.
Sign in to iCloud
As well as entering text via
an onscreen keyboard on
Apple TV, you can make
use of the Apple Remote
Keyboard built into iOS.
Ensure both devices are
signed into iCloud with the
same Apple ID.
Auto-prompting
Whenever you encounter a
text field on your Apple TV,
a prompt will appear on your
iOS device. You can tap that to
reach this screen.
Knowledge base
Disable passwords on
older Apple TV
Our tutorial looks at disabling password
prompts on a fourth generation Apple
TV. If you need to do it on a second or
third-gen device, you can only do so for
free downloads. Go to Settings>iTunes
Store and sign out if you?re logged in.
Then click ?Sign In? and opt for Apple
TV to remember your password.
4 Make a decision
You now have two alternatives. You could
require a password after 15 minutes, giving
some respite from having to enter passwords,
or you could select ?Never?. Choose an option.
Use the keyboard
Now use the keyboard as
you normally would on your
iDevice and the words will be
transferred to your Apple TV,
making light work of the task.
5 Sign in
It?s a pain but you?ll need to sign into
the iTunes Store to make the change from
Always to a less restrictive option. But if you?ve
chosen Never, you won?t need to do it again.
6 Review the change
If you selected After 15 Minutes, you may
want to change Require Password for free
downloads to No. If you?ve chosen Never, this
will automatically switch to No for you.

remove any that you never use. The Screen Recording

I?ve heard it?s possible
to unlock my Mac
using my Apple Watch.
How do I set this up?
For this to work you will
need a fairly new Mac
(2013 or later) and an
Apple Watch running
watchOS 3 or later. To
use this feature you
must first turn on Two
Factor Authorisation
on both your Mac
and your iPhone. On
Mac, go to System
Preferences>iCloud and
click ?Account Details?.
Now log into your Apple
ID, click on the ?Security?
tab and then click
?Turn On Two-Factor
Authentication?. On
iPhone, go to Settings>
iCloud, tap your Apple
ID and then select
?Password & Security?.
Once that is done, on
your Mac, go to System

Privacy and tick the box
labelled ?Allow your Apple

Mac?. Also make sure
that Bluetooth is turned
on and then ensure that
your Watch is turned
on and unlocked; then
simply hold your Watch
up to your Mac. The
Watch should buzz and
your Mac should then
automatically unlock. If
it doesn?t work first time
you may need to hold
your Watch closer. It?s a
useful system that means
you don?t have to keep
typing in a password to
unlock your Mac.

How do I sync my Mac desktop to all of my iOS

Similar to Dropbox, your Mac?s iCloud file sharing option
automatically backs up files stored in your documents and
desktop folders. Unfortunately, it is an all-or-nothing system that
doesn?t allow you to exclude certain files, so you have to make
sure you have enough iCloud storage space to cover it. Go to

iCloud Drive. Now select the ?Desktop & Documents? option and
you will be able to access Mac files on iOS through the Files app.

As packages go you will probably need to build a
wing on your house to accommodate the box that
Edifier?s S70DB soundbar and subwoofer combo
arrives in. As well as the units themselves, it also
contains a wall-mount bracket, wall anchors,
mounting screws, remote control plus the optical
cable, RCA cable and 3.5mm adaptor cable to
utilise the myriad of connection options. There?s
certainly plenty here to unbox and seemingly
the only peripheral missing is a cable to connect
the weighty subwoofer unit to the soundbar, but
mercifully that particular connection is wireless,
eradicating the need for any cabling whatsoever
apart from the power leads, which can be
concealed for a nice, clean setup.
Wireless connection
Measuring 113cm in length, the soundbar is
a hefty unit and ideally you?d use a forklift to
position the subwoofer ? anyone intending to use
this kit in a small room would be better suited
to more compact speakers. Setting up is
incredibly quick and easy. Simply
power on both units and
hold the ?pair? button on the
back of the subwoofer until
the red light blinks, then
press a similar button on
the back of the soundbar
and those two are linked
immediately. Pairing the
soundbar to your Mac
or iOS device is equally
effortless. You press in the main control knob on
the front of the soundbar to choose the Bluetooth
connection option and then it becomes instantly
discoverable. The whole process takes around
two minutes and then you?re good to go.
A sound to savour
As the S70DB is Edifier?s flagship soundbar our
hopes were high that this two-piece setup would
produce the goods ? and it really does. The 8?
bass unit channels a flow of rumbling bass around
the room that warms your bones. It?s perfect in
the neutral setting, but a knob on the back of the
hulking bass unit allows you to tone it down or
ramp it up to levels that?ll shake the grouting out
of your brickwork.
The soundbar itself puts its twin 19mm titanium
dome tweeters and four 70mm aluminium
mid-range amplifiers to great use distributing
wondrous sonic textures throughout the room.
It comes with three preset EQ modes: music,
movies and news. These cannot be modified, but
we didn?t feel that any mode was lacking clarity
and punch when applied to its intended medium.
We cannot fault the sound that the S70DB
produces in any way. The finish of the units is
another matter altogether, though?
Rather than something safe and neutral, like a
nice pine effect or even a matt black finish, Edifier
saw fit to encase this soundbar and amp combo
in a rosewood/walnut type veneer, cheapening
its appearance and making it harder to slot
seamlessly into your home decor. We were also
disappointed that the digital EQ on the central
LED panel that fluctuates as you play your music
is purely for cosmetic purposes and isn?t a true
representation of what is being played.
The remote control that is supplied is the
standard design that Edifier ships with all of its
higher-end audio equipment, consisting of a
metal base and rubber buttons. Very weighty,
very sturdy and very round. The supplied cables
are nothing special but, as always, it is worth
commending Edifier for actually supplying all of
the cables for all of the possible connections,
should you need them or not.
It?s a shame that the simple aesthetics of the
units aren?t in keeping with the exceptional sound
they produce otherwise this would be godly. As it
stands it is just very decent indeed.

Used as per their purpose, the Signature S10s
sound great. The mid and high range of their
sound even revealed subtle sounds in our music
that we hadn?t picked up before. They aren?t
designed to carry the majority of the audio weight,
which is why they would probably struggle as
the sole satellites. We were probably expecting
more from Polk?s own Power Port deep bass

from the speaker port to provide a greater surface
area to eliminate distortion and make for a more

A prerequisite for any headphones, beyond the
actual sound quality, is the look. Certainly, in the
EP650s from August International, we have a set
of cans that look far more expensive than they
actually are, which is sure to delight style gurus on
a budget everywhere.
Going for gold
Combining a comfortable, pleasing design with
the latest technology, including Bluetooth 4.2,
NFC and aptX Low Latency functionality, these
headphones come in six different colours (silver,
blue, red, white, black and gold, reviewed here)
and certainly look eye-catching. The right arm
houses a small square control panel featuring
basic playback/call answering controls and an
LED to aid mode selection, and the left arm
houses a 3.5mm audio-in port and NFC. They?re
easy enough to pair with your Mac or iOS device
and the built-in 3.7V/22mAh polymer battery
provides up to ten hours of playback on a full
charge from a distance of up to ten metres.
When you start listening to your music the
sound quality isn?t initially astounding ? ?you get
what you pay for? springs to mind. However, the
August Audio app (free to download from the
App Store) allows users to customise the sound
to meet their needs, which definitely improves
certain aspects. More style over sonics, but
definitely worth considering at this price.
The left arm of the headband features
built-in NFC and a 3.5mm audio input
socket to keep your options open?
A control panel in the right arm features
basic playback/call answering buttons
and an LED display
Verdict
A set of wireless headphones which are easier on the eye (and wallet)
than the ears, but are most definitely good value for money.
The build quality is very good and the
cans fold neatly inwards to make them
easy to stow away when not in use

Combining a retro-style look with modern
technological innards, Edifier?s R1850DB
bookshelf speakers wouldn?t look out of place in
a ?90s bedsit. That is, minus the terrible mangle
of wires, because the inclusion of Bluetooth 4.0
eradicates the need for Mac or iOS users to
bother unboxing the supplied 3.5mm RCA audio
and optical cables.
Slanted for sound
The speakers tilt backwards at a ten
degree angle to help better project the
sound into the room
The speakers feature a solid MDF case, the sides
of which are finished with a wood-grain effect,
while the top and bottoms feature a smooth matt
finish. Both units are tilted back at a ten degree
angle to help project the sound and removable
grilles let you show off the drivers. Though
identical from the front, flip the units around and
the right one is revealed as the active speaker
with a built-in control panel that is home to
various connection ports and a trio of dials for
controlling bass, treble and volume. Curiously,
there is also a connection port for a subwoofer,
providing a means to expand your setup if you
need more boom down below.
The R1850DBs certainly produce a decent
range of sound for the price, with a deep, bassy
hum that you?ll probably never feel the need to
expand. However, ramp them up too far and they
start to sound a bit buzzy. Ideal for small spaces
(and bedsits) but keep away from large spaces.
Verdict
Not particularly great to look at and they?d struggle to fill large rooms
with pleasing sound, but in small spaces these bookshelves thrive.
The right speaker features knobs to adjust
the bass, treble and volume, as well as the
various input ports?

BoomBar 2 Bluetooth Speaker

We love the sound of KitSound?s latest portable speaker.
It feels pleasingly chunky and weighty to hold, it becomes
instantly discoverable by your Mac or iOS device as soon as
you turn it on (no holding additional buttons for ?X? amount of
seconds?), and it produces sound that can only be described
as stunning considering its size. The unit is dust and water
resistant (IP66) and comes with covered ports for charging and
AUX connectivity plus protected push buttons for volume and

If you?re likely to be using your MacBook away from power

is essential ? and the smaller and lighter the better. The
new Iceworks 7000 is an ultra-slim (8mm), highly portable

An LED display conveys the potency of its power and a

We?ve experience some bulky beasts in the portable iPhone

absolutely gorgeous to hold. Designed to charge iPhones, iPads

devices simultaneously. On a full charge, the reviewed version
provided up to 34 hours of power and can also be charged up

really adds a touch of class to an already polished product.

The default macOS Calendar app is perfectly fine
and does pretty much what you want it to? until
you stumble across an app that offers so much
more. Fantastical 2 is just such an app, a one-stop
personal organiser that makes Apple?s offering look
more defunct than floppy disks and deely boppers.
To start with, let?s examine the general layout
of Fantastical 2. Whereas in Apple?s Calendar
app a lot of space to the side of the interface is
used to display your active calendars, Fantastical
realises that this is a complete waste of real estate
and instead uses this area to present your daily
schedules and upcoming events. This column
features a different colour scheme so as to stand
out from the rest of the interface and can be
expanded to a size that suits the user. Like Apple?s
Calendar app, new events can be created by rightclicking on a day before adding in details, locations
and people to share the event with. So far so
similar. However, Fantastical also boasts its own
built-in reminders interface that you can refer to at
any time and tick your tasks off as you complete
them ? are you taking notes, Apple?
Fantastical even has its own menu bar item so
that you can get an instant overview of the month
ahead, add events with the minimum amount of
fuss and get a quick rundown of all upcoming
events without having to launch the app proper. It?s
very well executed. But then we get the elephant in
the room? the price. As much as we love this app
and would recommend it to anyone that leads a
busy life, 50 quid is somewhat over the top!
Verdict
A brilliant calendar app that shows Apple?s offering where the future lies. However
good it is though, the price is absolutely extortionate, unfortunately.

We don?t make a habit of featuring free apps in
this section because, well, you can try them out
for yourselves at no risk. However in this instance
Master of Typing 3 is worth highlighting because
it provides a series of fun tests to improve your
touch-typing skills as well as useful tips for
improving your posture and efficiency.
In this free version of the app you are provided
with four different courses ranging from Beginner to
Expert; each one comprises of five lessons. Click
on a lesson and you will be tasked with typing out
a series of characters and then assessed on time
taken and accuracy (mistakes will be highlighted as
you go along). Once you have mastered all of the
lessons in a course you will be able to undertake
a final exam. Although the design of the app is
probably aimed more towards younger users
thanks to the colourful and simplistic appearance,
there are certainly benefits for all ages. For
example, children will delight at the fun messages
of encouragement that reward good performances
and senior typists can enjoy the nerdy stats
charts that provide detailed breakdowns of your
performances across the courses.
In-app purchases allow you to expand the touchtyping syllabus at varying costs depending on the
difficulty level and you can tailor the experience with
different themes and sounds via the settings menu.
The fact that the initial app is free means that you?re
at the mercy of annoying banner ads, but this is a
small price to pay for a fun and engaging app that
will help heighten your Mac typing prowess.
Verdict
A fun, challenging and rewarding app. There is certainly enough free content to improve
your touch-typing skills with much more waiting in the wings? for a price!

As a gaming medium, iOS is going through
something of a golden period at the moment
and we?re experiencing new ways in which the
touchscreen is being utilised to provide enthralling
innovations in software. This also helps push the
developers in new directions in terms of the games
they produce, which is a huge blessing when the
yield is games like Florence.
The story focuses on our eponymous heroine,
a socially awkward girl who?s journey we play out
from child to womanhood, exploring concepts we
can all relate to, such as the fear of the unknown
as we get older and an over-reliance on mobile
technology. Essentially, the game is about falling in
love and the tools provided to play out each scene
make you feel as though you?re in Florence?s head
during the whole emotional rollercoaster. In fact
it?s hard to convey just how well the game uses
the tech to make each scene feel different, but
no less enthralling. In one scene when Florence
first encounters her knight she wipes out on her
bike and the user must scrub through frequency
tuners to focus her vision. In another, to convey the
awkwardness of early verbal exchanges, the user
must drag jigsaw pieces into speech bubbles; the
pieces get fewer and easier to slot together as the
two become more at ease with each other.
If there is one criticism to throw then it is not
always clear how you must interact with the screen
to progress. But you have to think outside the box,
just like the developers did when making this short,
yet completely charming masterpiece.
Verdict
An enthralling gem of a game that conveys so much emotion through the imaginative,
interactive toolset and simple imagery that no words are ever needed.

Why you should
still connect iOS
devices to a Mac
iPhones and iPads no longer need to be plugged into
a Mac to work, but there are still benefits?
Difficulty

A
t one time when a new iPhone or iPad was
switched on the first thing it did was tell you
to plug it into a computer with iTunes. This
requirement was abandoned a few generations down
the line and now iOS devices don?t need a computer.
However, it can still be useful to plug iPhones and iPads
into the Mac occasionally and here we show you some of
Backup and sync

Some people record audio
themselves or buy MP3s
and add them to iTunes.
Plug in the iPhone/iPad
and the files can be copied
from the Mac to the
iPhone or iPad. You can
also choose what syncs.
There are a few benefits of connecting your iOS
device to your Mac, old-school style?
the things you can do. You can check the battery, back
up the device and store the backups on the Mac?s disk,
take control of the music, transfer documents between
apps and more. Have you ever lost files, messages,
contacts and so on? There are also third-party utilities
that recover lost or deleted data from iOS devices
plugged into the Mac, too.
Restore iOS device
Click the Restore iPad or
iPhone button to reset
the device back to factory
settings with the latest version
of iOS. This can sometimes
revive a dead device or solve
serious problems.
Knowledge base
Do you need to plug in?
The short answer is no, you can
manage without plugging an iPhone or
iPad into a Mac. However, it increases
your backup and recovery options. It
also solves the storage problem if you
only have the free 5GB Apple offers.
When you have several devices, the
space is used up fast, but the Mac has
storage space to spare for backups.

Encrypt backups
If encryption is not enabled,
some personal information,
like health data, is not backed
up. Tick this checkbox to

everything. You then need to
provide a password.
Backup and Restore
It is useful to have other backups
apart from iCloud, so temporarily
switch to This Computer and
click ?Back Up Now?. Use Restore
Backup if you ever need to put
the device back as it was.
Some people have found that plugging an iPhone or iPad into the Mac and
syncing or backing up has increased the amount of free storage space.
Step-by-step Back up, restore backups and more
1 Create a backup
2 Restore a backup
3 Restore factory settings
4 Add audio files
5 Transfer files
6 Check the battery
1 Recover deleted data
2 Browse deleted items
iCloud backups are automatic but a 5GB
free account isn?t enough. Back up to your
Mac using iTunes. Plug in the iOS device,
select Summary and click ?Back Up Now?.
If you have audio from sources other
than iTunes you need to add it manually.
Select Music, tick ?Sync Music? and use the
options to copy tracks to the device.
If you have lost messages, contacts,
appointments, notes or had other problems,
restore a Mac backup created in iTunes.
Click ?Restore Backup? and select one.
Most apps work wirelessly and use
online storage, but a few still use this old
method of transferring files. Select ?File
Sharing? and add or save documents.
A fully functioning iPhone or iPad is
needed to restore an iCloud backup, so if a
serious problem prevents it from working,
use the Restore iPhone/iPad to get it going.
With the iPhone/iPad plugged in, check
the battery health with coconutBattery (www.
coconut-flavour.com). Select iOS Device and
check the Design Capacity bar is over 80%.
Recover lost data
If you have lost or broken your iPhone
or iPad, if it has a serious problem that
cannot be fixed with iCloud backups, if
you have lost messages, call history, or
other files, there are third-party tools that
can recover lost data or even get a nonfunctioning device working again. They
cannot perform miracles, but sometimes
they can solve problems. For example,
dr.fone ? Recover (drfone.wondershare.
com) and PhoneRescue (www.imobie.
com) can be useful. Free trials let you see
what they can recover.
Plug in your iPhone or iPad and run
dr.fone. Choose which type of data to recover
and then where to recover it from in the
sidebar, the device, iTunes or iCloud backup.
After scanning the device or backup,
deleted items are listed in categories. See
if you can find the lost items. If you want to
recover them, you need to pay and register.

Top 10 apps to...
Improve security on iOS
Essential apps to increase the security of your iPhone
T
he iPhone is one of the most secure
phones available but there are still
situations and activities that are not
secure and an example of this is sending or
receiving emails. Are they encrypted? Could
someone else intercept them and read them?
You may want an encrypted email service.
You might lend your phone to your partner
or give it to your kids to play a game and keep
them entertained for a while. Once the phone is
in their hands they can access things you don?t
want them to see. You might want to hide your
photos and videos, or limit a child?s iPhone use
to certain hours of the day, like locking it after
bedtime or during homework hours. Use these
apps to increase the security on your iPhone
and iPad.
Secure your email
Encrypt your emails with ProtonMail
Encrypt messages
ProtonMail to ProtonMail is
encrypted, but when sending
emails elsewhere there is
still an option to encrypt
them. Tap the lock and add
a password agreed with the
recipient to enable reading.

Firefox Focus
2
TunnelBear VPN
This is an alternative web browser
based on Firefox but it has enhanced
privacy and security built in. Open it and tap
the gear icon in the top-right corner, then
set search to DuckDuckGo and turn on
all the tracking blockers. Disable Send
usage data.
Use a VPN to encrypt the internet
connection for security and privacy when
using public Wi-Fi. Get TunnelBear VPN
& Wifi Proxy and create a free account to
get 500MB data a month. Extra data can
be earned in various ways, such as by
tweeting about the app.
Encrypted emails
When sending emails to other
ProtonMail users, end-toend encryption ensures that
only you and the recipient
can read them. Anyone
intercepting the messages
sees scrambled data.
Self-destruct
For extra security, emails can
be set to self-destruct after a
certain period of time, like a
day, a week, and so on. Tap
the timer icon and choose
the length of time this email
is accessible.

Apple does a good job of making the
iPhone secure and apps are thoroughly
checked before being allowed into the
App Store. However, malware can be
encountered when browsing the web,
via email, text messages and other web
activities. Beware of phishing emails
pretending to be from Apple, your
company, PayPal, your bank and others.

Apple Watch
Add custom messages

Make it even easier to send relevant replies to
Messages by creating bespoke responses

M
essages on your Apple Watch has a very easy
way to reply to any incoming missives sent by
friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Trouble
is, the default replies which appear when you open a
message on your wrist are not always the ones that you
want to use right there and then so there?s a danger
you can fall out of the habit of using them.
74
190
2 Select Messages
Scroll down the screen until you reach
the list of apps that are built into your Apple
Watch and look for Messages. Tap this to be
taken straight to the app?s settings.
3 Tap Default replies
We want to create our own responses
to reply to any incoming messages but the
Watch already has many built-in. Scroll down
and select ?Default Replies?.
Try to make your own custom replies reflect the way you tend to speak and
respond. That way the recipient will feel they?re receiving a personal message.
Organise your Watch messages
Remove any default replies you do not need and organise the
others in the order you?re most comfortable with
Edit default replies
Tap ?Edit? in the top righthand corner to begin
managing your default
replies. The word will turn into
Done which you must tap
when you?re finished editing.
Turn replies on and off
Ordinarily the entry Smart Replies
at the top of this screen has a
green button next to it (it doesn?t
work in Edit mode so tap ?Done?
and it will appear). Sliding it to grey
turns smart replying off.
Delete replies
Red circles will appear next
to each of the replies. Tap a
circle next to a reply you do
not need and select ?Delete?
when it appears. The reply
will then be removed.

How to use a default reply
When you receive a message on your
Watch, tap to open it and use the
Digital Crown or your finger to scroll
down the screen. As you do so, you?ll
start to see the default replies. Simply
look for the one that you want and,
when you tap it, it will instantly form
a note at the bottom of the message
thread and send it.
4 View the replies
Take a look down the long list of default
replies. You can tap any of these to amend
them if you wish, using the keyboard to add a
little flourish for a more personal touch.
Rearrange replies
Tap and hold on a three-line
icon to the right of a default
reply and you?ll be able to
move it up and down the
screen. Drag it into a desired
position and let go.
5 Create new responses 6 Type a reply
To add a set of your own replies,
perhaps for work or close friends and family,
scroll down and tap ?Add Reply?. A blank
entry will be created.
Use the keyboard to type the custom
message you want to add to the list, then tap
?Done?. Tap ?Add Reply? to add more. These
will appear in the list on your Watch.

Sell your first-gen Apple Watch
Do you have an original Apple Watch and want to run watchOS 5? It?s time for an upgrade
Difficulty

20
D
o you have a Watch Series 0 ? that is, Apple?s
first-generation wearable? Then we have some
bad news for you: to benefit from watchOS 5, you
are going to need an upgrade. That?s because the new
operating system will not work on the original Watch so,
while you?ll still be able to enjoy all of the functionality that
you currently have on your wrist, future enhancements will
be sadly out of reach for you.
76

2 Select your wearable
Your Watch will now appear on this next
screen, together with any other Watches you
may own. Simply select the ?i? button to the
right of the Watch you wish to sell.
3 Unpair your Watch
You will see an option in red called Unpair
Apple Watch. This is the one you need: tap it.
Unpairing a Watch also erases the device so
be absolutely sure you want to do so.
The first-gen Apple Watch is still a decent wearable ? perhaps consider giving
or selling it to a friend or family member as a cheap introduction to the device

set you back at least 9. But you
could buy a used wearable. Consider
a Watch Series 2 from eBay or CEX

watchOS 5 and, used, cost around
0. In the US, try the Apple Refurb

4 Confirm unpairing
In any case, you will be now be asked if
you really want to unpair your Apple Watch (to
use it again, you?d need to re-pair it). Select
?Unpair? from the pop-up to continue.
Questions galore
To get to this point, you?ll be
asked whether the Watch turns
on and is in good shape but
you?ll get a price which you can
accept by clicking ?Trade it in
for a gift card?.
5 Enter Apple ID
Now enter the Apple ID password
for your account. Doing so will disable the
Activation Lock, remove Find My Watch and
remove your device from your account.
6 Unpairing Watch
You?re now on your way to unpairing your
Watch after which point, you will be able to
sell the device without fear that anyone can
access any of your stored information.

Turn off password
prompts in Apple TV
For users sick of having to enter a password every
time an app is installed on Apple TV?
Difficulty

5
T
here?s one thing we dread
seeing on Apple TV, and
that?s the password screen.
Although we know we can use our
iDevice to enter the password or
even call upon Siri and dictate it, we
invariably end up using the onscreen
keyboard to laboriously punch each
letter in, only to gnash our teeth when
we make a mistake.
Fortunately, there is a way of
turning this off when you?re installing
both free and paid-for apps ? or at
the very least have it activate after 15
minutes. Although it will leave your
device more vulnerable to someone
else downloading apps on to your
Apple TV, if you are the only person
using it or if you completely trust
others in your household, then it may
make your overall experience feel
more smooth and less frustrating.
You can disable password prompts so you
don?t have to type it at every purchase
Step-by-step Turn off password prompts
1 Open Settings app
If you don?t want the hassle of having to
input a password when you want to install an
app, launch the Settings app on your Apple TV
and navigate to the Accounts section.
78
190
2 Password settings
Now select the option iTunes and App
Store from the next screen before clicking on
?Password Settings?. You?ll be able to view and
assess your current password status.
3 Change the default
It?s most secure to set Require Password
to ?Always?, and ?Yes? for purchases, in-app
purchases and free downloads. Alter this by
clicking the top Require Password.
If you do not want to use the Apple Remote Keyboard, then you should go to
Settings>Notifications>Apple TV Remote Keyboard to turn it off.
Use your iOS device as a keyboard
If using the Siri Remote is putting you off entering
passwords on Apple TV, use your iDevice instead
Activate
key features
You must ensure that your
iOS device and Apple TV are
connected to Wi-Fi and that
Bluetooth is activated on
your iDevice.
Sign in to iCloud
As well as entering text via
an onscreen keyboard on
Apple TV, you can make
use of the Apple Remote
Keyboard built into iOS.
Ensure both devices are
signed into iCloud with the
same Apple ID.
Auto-prompting
Whenever you encounter a
text field on your Apple TV,
a prompt will appear on your
iOS device. You can tap that to
reach this screen.

Disable passwords on
older Apple TV
Our tutorial looks at disabling password
prompts on a fourth generation Apple
TV. If you need to do it on a second or
third-gen device, you can only do so for
free downloads. Go to Settings>iTunes
Store and sign out if you?re logged in.
Then click ?Sign In? and opt for Apple
TV to remember your password.
4 Make a decision
You now have two alternatives. You could
require a password after 15 minutes, giving
some respite from having to enter passwords,
or you could select ?Never?. Choose an option.
Use the keyboard
Now use the keyboard as
you normally would on your
iDevice and the words will be
transferred to your Apple TV,
making light work of the task.
5 Sign in
It?s a pain but you?ll need to sign into
the iTunes Store to make the change from
Always to a less restrictive option. But if you?ve
chosen Never, you won?t need to do it again.
6 Review the change
If you selected After 15 Minutes, you may
want to change Require Password for free
downloads to No. If you?ve chosen Never, this
will automatically switch to No for you.

How do I set this up?
For this to work you will

Now log into your Apple

As packages go you will probably need to build a
wing on your house to accommodate the box that
Edifier?s S70DB soundbar and subwoofer combo
arrives in. As well as the units themselves, it also
contains a wall-mount bracket, wall anchors,
mounting screws, remote control plus the optical
cable, RCA cable and 3.5mm adaptor cable to
utilise the myriad of connection options. There?s
certainly plenty here to unbox and seemingly
the only peripheral missing is a cable to connect
the weighty subwoofer unit to the soundbar, but
mercifully that particular connection is wireless,
eradicating the need for any cabling whatsoever
apart from the power leads, which can be
concealed for a nice, clean setup.
Wireless connection
Measuring 113cm in length, the soundbar is
a hefty unit and ideally you?d use a forklift to
position the subwoofer ? anyone intending to use
this kit in a small room would be better suited
to more compact speakers. Setting up is
incredibly quick and easy. Simply
power on both units and
hold the ?pair? button on the
back of the subwoofer until
the red light blinks, then
press a similar button on
the back of the soundbar
and those two are linked
immediately. Pairing the
soundbar to your Mac
or iOS device is equally
effortless. You press in the main control knob on
the front of the soundbar to choose the Bluetooth
connection option and then it becomes instantly
discoverable. The whole process takes around
two minutes and then you?re good to go.
A sound to savour
As the S70DB is Edifier?s flagship soundbar our
hopes were high that this two-piece setup would
produce the goods ? and it really does. The 8?
bass unit channels a flow of rumbling bass around
the room that warms your bones. It?s perfect in
the neutral setting, but a knob on the back of the
hulking bass unit allows you to tone it down or
ramp it up to levels that?ll shake the grouting out
of your brickwork.
The soundbar itself puts its twin 19mm titanium
dome tweeters and four 70mm aluminium
mid-range amplifiers to great use distributing
wondrous sonic textures throughout the room.
It comes with three preset EQ modes: music,
movies and news. These cannot be modified, but
we didn?t feel that any mode was lacking clarity
and punch when applied to its intended medium.
We cannot fault the sound that the S70DB
produces in any way. The finish of the units is
another matter altogether, though?
Rather than something safe and neutral, like a
nice pine effect or even a matt black finish, Edifier
saw fit to encase this soundbar and amp combo
in a rosewood/walnut type veneer, cheapening
its appearance and making it harder to slot
seamlessly into your home decor. We were also
disappointed that the digital EQ on the central
LED panel that fluctuates as you play your music
is purely for cosmetic purposes and isn?t a true
representation of what is being played.
The remote control that is supplied is the
standard design that Edifier ships with all of its
higher-end audio equipment, consisting of a
metal base and rubber buttons. Very weighty,
very sturdy and very round. The supplied cables
are nothing special but, as always, it is worth
commending Edifier for actually supplying all of
the cables for all of the possible connections,
should you need them or not.
It?s a shame that the simple aesthetics of the
units aren?t in keeping with the exceptional sound
they produce otherwise this would be godly. As it
stands it is just very decent indeed.

Though not standalone Bluetooth speakers,
Polk?s latest Signature S10 rear satellite surround
speakers would make the ideal addition to your
existing Bluetooth receiver setup and add a
subtle level of sonics to enhance your listening
experience, whether it?s for music, movies or TV. It
certainly doesn?t hurt that they look good as well.
Perfectly formed

Each speaker comprises of a one-inch highresolution Terylene tweeter for a high frequency
response that perfectly reproduces the latest
high-resolution audio files, plus four-inch low
distortion micro-reinforced polypropylene cones
for clean, throbbing bass and an increased
dynamic mid-range. Detachable anti-diffraction
magnetic grilles reveal this setup in all of its clean
and sophisticated majesty. Turn the speakers
around and gold-plated 5-way binding posts are
on hand for you to ease these in to your existing
5.x, 7.x or 9.x surround setup.
We were probably expecting
more from Polk?s own Power Port deep bass
technology, that is designed to channel air flow
from the speaker port to provide a greater surface
area to eliminate distortion and make for a more
expansive sound, as they don?t thump out much
bass. However, this is understandable given their
size (8.4 x 5.4 x 6.25 inches). The depth and
clarity they do provide is impressive, though.

A prerequisite for any headphones, beyond the
actual sound quality, is the look. Certainly, in the
EP650s from August International, we have a set
of cans that look far more expensive than they
actually are, which is sure to delight style gurus on
a budget everywhere.
Going for gold
Combining a comfortable, pleasing design with
the latest technology, including Bluetooth 4.2,
NFC and aptX Low Latency functionality, these
headphones come in six different colours (silver,
blue, red, white, black and gold, reviewed here)
and certainly look eye-catching. The right arm
houses a small square control panel featuring
basic playback/call answering controls and an
LED to aid mode selection, and the left arm
houses a 3.5mm audio-in port and NFC. They?re
easy enough to pair with your Mac or iOS device
and the built-in 3.7V/22mAh polymer battery
provides up to ten hours of playback on a full
charge from a distance of up to ten metres.
When you start listening to your music the
sound quality isn?t initially astounding ? ?you get
what you pay for? springs to mind. However, the
August Audio app (free to download from the
App Store) allows users to customise the sound
to meet their needs, which definitely improves
certain aspects. More style over sonics, but
definitely worth considering at this price.
The left arm of the headband features
built-in NFC and a 3.5mm audio input
socket to keep your options open?
A control panel in the right arm features
basic playback/call answering buttons
and an LED display
Verdict
A set of wireless headphones which are easier on the eye (and wallet)
than the ears, but are most definitely good value for money.
The build quality is very good and the
cans fold neatly inwards to make them
easy to stow away when not in use

Combining a retro-style look with modern
technological innards, Edifier?s R1850DB
bookshelf speakers wouldn?t look out of place in
a ?90s bedsit. That is, minus the terrible mangle
of wires, because the inclusion of Bluetooth 4.0
eradicates the need for Mac or iOS users to
bother unboxing the supplied 3.5mm RCA audio
and optical cables.
Slanted for sound
The speakers tilt backwards at a ten
degree angle to help better project the
sound into the room
The speakers feature a solid MDF case, the sides
of which are finished with a wood-grain effect,
while the top and bottoms feature a smooth matt
finish. Both units are tilted back at a ten degree
angle to help project the sound and removable
grilles let you show off the drivers. Though
identical from the front, flip the units around and
the right one is revealed as the active speaker
with a built-in control panel that is home to
various connection ports and a trio of dials for
controlling bass, treble and volume. Curiously,
there is also a connection port for a subwoofer,
providing a means to expand your setup if you
need more boom down below.
The R1850DBs certainly produce a decent
range of sound for the price, with a deep, bassy
hum that you?ll probably never feel the need to
expand. However, ramp them up too far and they
start to sound a bit buzzy. Ideal for small spaces
(and bedsits) but keep away from large spaces.
Verdict
Not particularly great to look at and they?d struggle to fill large rooms
with pleasing sound, but in small spaces these bookshelves thrive.
The right speaker features knobs to adjust
the bass, treble and volume, as well as the
various input ports?

BoomBar 2 Bluetooth Speaker

We love the sound of KitSound?s latest portable speaker.
It feels pleasingly chunky and weighty to hold, it becomes
instantly discoverable by your Mac or iOS device as soon as
you turn it on (no holding additional buttons for ?X? amount of
seconds?), and it produces sound that can only be described
as stunning considering its size. The unit is dust and water

Powerstation Plus XL

We?ve experience some bulky beasts in the portable iPhone
charger market, but Mophie?s latest is easy to pocket and feels
absolutely gorgeous to hold. Designed to charge iPhones, iPads
and AirPods, the Powerstation Plus XL comes with a pop-out
Lightning connector plus a standard USB port to charge multiple
devices simultaneously. On a full charge, the reviewed version
provided up to 34 hours of power and can also be charged up
wirelessly on any Qi-enabled wireless charging pad. It works
wonders but it?s the sumptuous fabric on the top and bottom that
really adds a touch of class to an already polished product.
