INT. SKYLER'S ROOM - MORNING
The room is cold and all of the colors are muted.
The
furniture is contemporary.
SKYLER, (17) a beautiful blond,
wakes up.
INT. SKYLER'S BATHROOM - MORNING
Skyler runs the water and splashes her face.
She looks into
the mirror, examining the details of her face.
She brushes
her teeth.
Through an intercom in the room, we hear a voice.
DANA (O.S.)
Skyler, breakfast!
INT. SKYLER'S KITCHEN - MORNING
An extremely contemporary home with large windows overlooking
Seattle.
Skyler eats while her mom, DANA (50), stands
against the wall and talks on the phone.
TITLE READS: FALL
DANA
It's been crazy since we got home.
Dana glances at Skyler and then moves away in an attempt to
get out of earshot.
DANA (CONT'D)
She's doing great....
Skyler's dad, ADAM (50) walks in, iPad in hand, and pours
himself some coffee.
ADAM
(to Skyler)
There's another new green
development project underway.
SKYLER
Where?
ADAM
China. It's a sustainable City.
I'll forward you the link.
DANA
(still on the phone)
Well it's hard to tell...
She looks at Skyler.
DANA (CONT'D)
Let me call you back.
She hangs up the phone.
DANA (CONT'D)
(to Skyler)
Are you excited?
SKYLER
I guess.
DANA
You should be. It's senior year!
Skyler moves food around on her plate with her fork.
DANA (CONT'D)
Adam, tell Sky that she should be
excited.
ADAM
OK... Sky, you should be excited.
About what?
DANA
It's senior year.
Adam pauses for a moment from the Ipad to reflect.
ADAM
Remember how much fun we had senior
year? 2nd semester. One last shit
show before Princeton.
DANA
(to Skyler)
You'll be there soon.
Dana smiles.
SKYLER
Do I have to go today?
DANA
Skyler.
Of course you have to go.
Once y o u 're there and around
everyone again, it'll be fine.
You'll have fun.
You'll see.
EXT. HART FAMILY HOUSE - MORNING
Skyler is driving her car listening to NPR.
She parks on the
side ofthe road in front of the gate to a large property
surrounded by ivy covered walls. She parks, looks at the
time, and then watches the gate. After a while, JEZEBEL (17,
strikingly resembles Skyler, fashionable) appears at the gate
and waves.
She opens the passenger door and climbs into the
car in routine fashion.
JEZEBEL
Sorry! I couldn't decide what to
wear.
Jezebel closes her door and Skyler drives off.
SKYLER
Don't you think we've been there
long enough for it not to matter?
JEZEBEL
It always matters.
SKYLER
(laughing)
Whatever. You're always late.
JEZEBEL
I know. My own brother won't even
wait for me in the morning.
She smiles at Skyler.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
That's what best friends are for.
But you always listen to this
bullshit.
On the radio, a man's voice drones on. Jezebel changes it,
and begins browsing through the stations.
SKYLER
It's not bullshit.
Public Radio.
It's National
JEZEBEL
OK, you're right.
But you can
spare me the lectures before
school.
Unsatisfied with the radio, she switches to a CD.
the chair back and gazes out of the window.
She leans
SKYLER
Where's your stuff?
JEZEBEL
Sky please. Everyone knows that
you d o n 't need anything on the
first day.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - MORNING
An elite, private high school with brick buildings and
manicured lawns.
STUDENTS gather in the courtyard.
Girls
exchange hugs, guys shake hands casually, and teachers greet
new students and their parents. Skyler and Jezebel watch from
a distance and examine the scene, hesitating.
Jezebel spots
MATT (17, attractive, bohemian, brooding) who is hanging back
in a corner, attempting to go unnoticed.
JEZEBEL
Oh G o d . There's Matt.
Skyler looks for him.
SKYLER
Where?
JEZEBEL
Over there in the corner. But don't
look.
I don't want him to see me.
Skyler and Matt look towards each other.
Their eyes meet.
Jezebel instantly notices and turns to walk away.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
Whatever you do, do not talk about
me.
Jezebel leaves.
Matt approaches Skyler.
MATT
I was wondering if you'd show.
SKYLER
I tried weasling my way out of it.
Mom wouldn't let me.
Matt pulls out a pack of cigarettes and lights one.
MATT
Do you want to get out of here?
SKYLER
No. I want a cigarette.
He offers her a cigarette.
smokes i t .
Skyler takes his cigarette and
MATT
How was Patagonia?
SKYLER
Interminable.
But nice I guess,
considering. Seattle?
MATT
Interminable.
SKYLER
What's your first class?
MATT
Espanol.
Skyler's tone turns serious.
SKYLER
Don't be late. Perez hates that.
MATT
No lecture please.
SKYLER
And you should quit smoking.
kill you.
It'll
Skyler takes another puff and hands the cigarette back.
MATT
It's the stress of life that makes
people wanna smoke that kills them,
not the actual cigarettes.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY - MORNING
Skyler walks through the hallway.
Students talk and move in
and out of classrooms, but Skyler talks to no one.
Two girls
look at her and one points in her direction.
GIRL
That's her.
Skyler turns to look and the girls turn away and move quickly
down the hall. Another girl, JANINE (17, cute but pudgy),
walks out from a classroom, sees Skyler, and walks up behind
her, tapping her on the shoulder.
JANINE
Hey you.
SKYLER
JanineJ Shit you scared me.
JANINE
Sor r y .
She puts an arm around Skyler, who barely moves.
JANINE (CONT'D)
I missed you.
Awkward pause.
JANINE (CONT'D)
You smell like cigarettes.
SKYLER
Matt was smoking.
JANINE
I keep telling him he needs to
quit.
SKYLER
You know he doesn't listen.
JANINE
How's he doing? Did he look
alright?
SKYLER
Like the looker he's always been.
Skyler continues down the hallway and Janine follows.
JANINE
I keep thinking he must be so
lonely now that he doesn't have
Jez.
SKYLER
Well, he dumped her.
JANINE
True, b u t ...
SKYLER
Janine, I don't want to talk about
it.
JANINE
Sorry.
They reach an office with an open door.
Janine with sympathy.
Skyler turns to
SKYLER
College Counseling.
I gotta go.
Maybe I'll see you at lunch.
OK!
JANINE
We just have to catch up.
Skyler forces a smile.
SKYLER
I know.
INT. MS. CHAN'S OFFICE - MORNING
The office has Asian influences, including a small fountain.
MS CHAN (petite, 4 0 's) faces away from the door at a
windowsill full of teas and spices.
MS. CHAN
Good morning Skyler.
like some tea?
Would you
SKYLER
Sure.
M s . Chan prepares a mug of herbal tea that she carefully
selects from a wooden box.
She then carefully hands it to
Skyler and sits down.
MS. CHAN
So. College... the reason why
y o u 're h e r e . Any thoughts on where
you'll be applying?
Skyler takes a sip of the tea.
SKYLER
Princeton.
10.
MS. CHAN
(inquisitive)
And?
SKYLER
I hadn't really thought of any
other options.
Most of the Ivys I
guess.
And then some other liberal
arts schools?
The East Coast for
sure, but Princeton is my first
choice.
MS. CHAN
Well, you have the grades, and your
PSAT scores are outstanding.
The
SAT shouldn't be an issue.
I'm
just wondering why you're so set on
Princeton.
SKYLER
It's where I've always wanted to
go.
MS. CHAN
You don't sound so sure.
SKYLER
My parents want me to go there, of
c o u r s e . They went t h e r e .
Ms. Chan is quiet. Skyler shrugs.
MS. CHAN
I want you to go home and do some
thinking.
Start researching the
schools that you're considering.
Then I also want you to write me
something about the things that you
love to do. Free associate. Then
we'll discuss.
SKYLER
Alright.
MS. CHAN
How's the tea?
SKYLER
I t 's delicious. Thanks.
MS. CHAN
Skyler, I want you to know that my
door is always open.
11.
Before Ms. Chan can go any further, Skyler interjects.
SKYLER
Great. Thanks again for the tea.
Skyler picks up her things. Goes to the door.
MS. CHAN
Don't forget to write that down.
Skyler nods and leaves.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL LAWN - DAY
Skyler and Jezebel are sitting by a tree eating their lunches
and watching other students from a distance.
JEZEBEL
I'd never get into Princeton.
SKYLER
Yes you could. I've heard it's not
that hard.
That the work is no
harder than it is here, only
t h e r e 's m o r e , but w e 're prepared
for a lot of work anyway.
JEZEBEL
Not that hard for you.
You're good
at organic chemistry.
I'm good
a t . .. theatre. Remember the play in
8th grade?
SKYLER
When I fell on stage in the middle
of my monologue?
JEZEBEL
And Tyler stepped on your toga.
SKYLER
And I showed my ass to the entire
audience.
They laugh.
JEZEBEL
Yeah.
Where you fail, I shine.
And visa versa.
12.
SKYLER
You never apply yourself.
JEZEBEL
Not true.
SKYLER
True.
Jezebel hands Skyler a bottle of juice.
JEZEBEL
Can you open this?
Skyler opens it and hands it back.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
I wish it were a cocktail.
SKYLER
I bet.
Jezebel nudges her.
JEZEBEL
Shut u p .
BEATRICE (black, 3 0 's, stylish) and MS. KLEIN (white, 3 0 's)
walk by them. Beatrice looks in Skyler's direction but says
nothing.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
Who's that with Ms. Klein?
SKYLER
I have no idea.
JEZEBEL
So anyway, what did he say?
SKYLER
Who?
JEZEBEL
Matt. Did he say anything about me?
SKYLER
No.
Jezebel is surprised.
JEZEBEL
What do you think that means?
SKYLER
I have no idea.
JEZEBEL
Do you think he's completely over
me?
SKYLER
Of course not.
INT. HISTORY CLASS - DAY
Skyler and Jezebel sit in the back corner of the classroom.
Skyler takes exact notes from the board while Jezebel copies
them.
MS. KLEIN
So if we were to discuss the causes
of the Holocaust, one of the
perhaps, most obvious examples of
genocide that we look to, what
would we name as contributing
factors?
NATHANIEL (18), raises his hand.
MS. KLEIN (CONT'D)
Nathaniel.
NATHANIEL
Hitler... crazy dictator, great
orator... he was able to brainwash
the people. And then used
propaganda of course.
MS. KLEIN
Good, what else?
There's silence in the room.
MS. KLEIN (CONT'D)
Skyler.
SKYLER
I'd say the Treaty of Versailles.
MS. KLEIN
Interesting. Why?
SKYLER
It stripped the German people of
their pride, left them in a
hopeless state, and put economic
pressure on them... pressure that
made them weak, and ultimately
looking for a way out.
MS. KLEIN
A scapegoat. Good answer.
INT. SCIENCE LAB - DAY
A state of the art lab. MR. FRANKLIN passes out the
syllabus.
Skyler is sitting at a lab counter with Jezebel,
not far from JONATHAN (17, clean cut).
JEZEBEL
I have to go to the bathroom.
my seat?
Skyler nods.
Save
Jezebel exits the classroom quietly.
MR FRANKLIN
Take one of each and pass the rest.
There's the syllabus, a list of my
expectations and procedures as it
regards to lab, and your first
assignment.
I think you're all old
enough to behave.
Everyone, pick a
lab partner.
People quickly partner up. Jonathan approaches Skyler,
picking her, before she can protest.
JONATHAN
Hey.
SKYLER
Hey.
Jezebel enters, sees them, rolls her eyes at Skyler, and goes
and sits across the room and out of view.
INT. SCIENCE LAB - A LITTLE LATER
Skyler and Jonathan are working quietly on their experiment
while the other partners chatter about the work.
MR FRANKLIN
It's fascinating isn't it? To think
that all of life on earth can be
deduced to such small components of
an organism.
We are, after all,
nothing more than t h a t . .. Growing
and living here on Earth for a
limited period of time.
Jonathan drops one of the slides from the microscope, nearly
ruining it.
JONATHAN
Shit, sorry.
SKYLER
That's OK.
They continue in silence.
lab notebook.
Skyler writes meticulously in her
JONATHAN
A m I making you uncomfortable?
SKYLER
(looking down at the
notebook)
No, not at all.
JONATHAN
I've missed you.
SKYLER
Now is not a good t i m e .
JONATHAN
Skyler, look at me.
She looks at him.
SKYLER
Let's focus on the culture.
Mr. Franklin approaches them.
MR. FRANKLIN
How's it coming?
JONATHAN
I think we've got it.
16.
SKYLER
It's perfect.
MR. FRANKLIN
I wouldn't expect less.
Mr. Franklin moves on to another pair.
Jonathan turns his
attention back to Skyler, keeping his voice low.
JONATHAN
I'm not going to let you ignore me.
SKYLER
I'm not ignoring you.
JONATHAN
Sooner or later things for us can
go back to the way they w e r e .
SKYLER
Really?
JONATHAN
Come over tonight.
SKYLER
I can't.
JONATHAN
Why not? Do you think that Jez is
going to get mad at us for hanging
out?
SKYLER
That isn't funny.
JONATHAN
Well she's not.
SKYLER
I told you, I can't.
JONATHAN
Why not?
She hands him a slide.
SKYLER
Because I don't think it's
appropriate.
MR. FRANKLIN
Start cleaning up when you're
ready.
EXT. SCHOOL BATHROOM - AFTERNOON
Students file out of classrooms and into the hallway.
Skyler
pauses outside of one of the bathrooms and stares at the
door, afraid to go inside.
Jezebel walks up behind her.
JEZEBEL
You ditched m e .
SKYLER
No I didn't.
You were gone.
He
asked.
I wasn't going to say no.
JEZEBEL
Whatever.
I'm just glad that he
has practice and doesn't have to
ride home with us.
Let's go.
They walk off down the hall.
Skyler looks back at the
bathroom for a moment, and then continues.
SKYLER
I wish you guys got along better.
JEZEBEL
Less than a year apart but nothing
alike.
You know what I was
thinking?
They exit the building and head towards the car.
SKYLER
What?
JEZEBEL
Let's do our prank tonight.
SKYLER
No.
JEZEBEL
Oh come on.
I can't do it without
you.
SKYLER
Jez.
JEZEBEL
(begging)
Please?
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - NIGHT
Skyler and Jezebel are dressed in all black disguises and
climbing onto the top of one of the buildings. Skyler
carries a bag and moves slowly and deliberately.
Jezebel
follows h e r .
JEZEBEL
(attempting a whisper)
Hurry up.
SKYLER
Shhh.
JEZEBEL
Well could you go any slower?
Someone is going to see us.
SKYLER
There's no one here, and I'm not
about to drop this bag.
They reach the roof of the building.
In the center is a
large area with glass.
Skyler carefully crawls across the
roof, while Jezebel turns around and keeps watch.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
Tell me if you see or hear anyone.
Got it.
JEZEBEL
Make it quick.
Skyler pulls spray paints of all colors from the bag and
lines them up.
She's meticulous.
SKYLER
This was your idea.
I know.
JEZEBEL
But just hurry.
SKYLER
You can't rush art.
Skyler begins to spray a design onto the glass.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - LATER THAT NIGHT
Jezebel and Skyler climb down the side of the building
laughing and whispering.
Just as Skyler reaches the ground,
the door to the building across from them opens, and Beatrice
walks out carrying an arm full of art supplies.
Skyler and Beatrice briefly make eye contact through the
darkness, then Jezebel and Skyler turn and run away.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - NEXT DAY
Skyler and Jezebel gaze up at the glass roof which has a
colorful spray painted mural with the word "seniors" written
across the middle.
They smile at each other, and then they
walk off.
INT. SKYLER'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Skyler and her parents are seated at the dinner table.
has his Ipad next to his plate and is perusing through
something as he eats.
It's quiet.
DANA
(to Adam)
So it was nearly impossible to get
anything d o n e .
She looks at Skyler, who quietly plays with her food.
DANA (CONT'D)
(to Skyler)
What's the matter honey?
SKYLER
Nothing.
DANA
Adam, for Christ's sake can you put
that thing away?
ADAM
This analysis of The Grand Design.
It's fascinating.... delving into
possibilities behind Hawking's
change of opinion.
These bloggers
are n u t s . They must have nothing
to do all day but to read and
ramble.
DANA
Like you?
ADAM
Ouch.
SKYLER
What do you believe?
Adam
ADAM
About what?
SKYLER
About Hawking's theory. Do you
believe that the universe could've
sprung out of nothing? That there's
no God?
ADAM
(pauses)
You know, to be honest I'm not
sure. This would have us question
faith wouldn't it?
SKYLER
Well, if there's no God, then that
means that there's no such thing as
an Afterlife.
ADAM
I guess not.
DANA
Adam could we talk about something
else?
ADAM
What is the problem?
DANA
Something l e s s ... theoretical
ADAM
Fine, what would you like to talk
about?
DANA
How is school going Sky?
SKYLER
Good.
DANA
Do classes seem like they're going
to be difficult?
SKYLER
Not really.
DANA
How are all of your friends?
SKYLER
They're good.
I'm done.
to my room.
I'm going
She gets up to leave.
DANA
Honey, you've barely touched your
pesto.
ADAM
Yea Sky. Sit down, please.
He looks at Dana, nods for her to say something.
DANA
Skyler if you're having problems we
just want to make sure that you get
the help that you need.
Skier sits
.
SKYLER
I'm not having problems.
DANA
Mr. Davis called.
He said that
someone reported that you were...
on the roof of one of the buildings
and vandalizing school property in
the middle of the night?
ADAM
What's this about Sky?
SKYLER
Nothing.
I dunno.
I know that
someone spray painted the glass
ceiling of the refectory, but I had
nothing to do with i t .
DANA
He said that it was distinctly you
and at least one other person.
SKYLER
That's ridiculous.
I wasn't there.
DANA
Well I'm coming to school tomorrow
for a meeting with you and Mr.
Davis.
Skyler looks at Adam.
SKYLER
Will you be there too?
ADAM
No sweetie, I'm off to China
tomorrow.
Apparently there are
some things with the construction
of the hotel that don't match our
design, and, well anyway I have to
go and check on it.
But your
mother will fill me in.
SKYLER
Lovely.
INT. MR. DAVIS OFFICE - MORNING
Dana and Skyler sit in the office.
Mr. Davis and Beatrice
enter.
They're finishing a conversation but stop upon seeing
them.
MR. DAVIS
Mrs. Richardson, nice to see you.
Thank you for coming in.
DANA
Thank you for making me aware of
the situation.
MR. DAVIS
That's why we're here. Skyler, good
morning.
MR. DAVIS (CONT'D)
This is Beatrice Field.
She's one
of the visual arts teachers and new
to the staff from London.
BEATRICE
Skyler, I was the one who saw you
the other night.
She turns to Dana.
BEATRICE (CONT'D)
I was working late trying to finish
moving into the art room.
And then
I began to paint and... well,
anyway.
SKYLER
I have no idea what you're talking
about.
MR. DAVIS
So you had nothing to do with
that... masterpiece on the ceiling?
SKYLER
No Mr. Davis.
I have no idea why
she would say that.
DANA
Skyler.
SKYLER
I'm sorry. But like I said.
wasn't there.
I
MR. DAVIS
Skyler , it's our responsibility to
make sure of it.
A n d . ..
DANA
Mr. D a vis, I don't mean to
interrupt, but we both know that
this type of behavior is just not
like Skyler at all.
I've been
thinking that maybe she needs to
see someone.
SKYLER
Like a shrink?
MR. DAVIS
That may not be a bad idea.
SKYLER
(to Dana)
I don't need to go to a shrink.
I'm fine. Besides , I don't feel
comfortable talking to one of my
friend's parents about my problems.
And it wasn't me.
It's pitch black
around here at night , and we've
never even met.
How can she be so
sure that it was me she saw?
MR. DAVIS
Skyler..
BEATRICE
Mr. D a v i s r Skyler's right.
MR. DAVIS
Excuse me?
BEATRICE
None of us can prove that Skyler is
responsible for this. It wouldn't
be moral for us to punish her or
force her to see someone when she
doesn't want to.
MR. DAVIS
If you're sure that you saw her
t h e n ...
BEATRICE
I can't be sure.
MR. DAVIS
(to Skyler)
Well then, there's not much more
that I can say.
SKYLER
Does this mean that I can go?
MR. DAVIS
Yes.
DANA
(to Dr. Davis)
Thank you so much.
I'm very sorry.
Dana and Skyler exit the office.
DANA (CONT'D)
Get to class.
I'll see you at
home.
Dana walks off down the empty hallway, and Jezebel appears
from hiding.
JEZEBEL
What happened?
SKYLER
Nothing.
JEZEBEL
Nothing?
SKYLER
Yeah nothing.
She changed her
tune.
JEZEBEL
Why?
SKYLER
I have no i d e a .
EXT. BEATRICE'S OFFICE - DAY
School is over and students are filing out of classrooms and
leaving.
Skyler approaches the office looking for Beatrice.
She finds a note waiting, which reads, "The art room." She
walks off.
INT. ART ROOM - DAY
Skyler enters the art room to find Beatrice standing on a
tall ladder, hanging a framed painting on the wall.
BEATRICE
(turning around on the
ladder)
Grab the bottom of this ladder.
Skyler holds the bottom of the ladder while Beatrice hangs
the painting and then slowly climbs down to grab another in a
large collection on the floor, then climbs the ladder again.
BEATRICE (C O N T 'D )
Find any time to paint over the
summer?
SKYLER
I'm sorry?
BEATRICE
Did you find time to paint over the
summer?
Laughs.
Is it my accent or something?
SKYLER
Oh, no I just didn't know why you'd
ask. Not really.
My family wanted
to g e t . .. We were traveling all
summer.
BEATRICE
I see.
Mr. Collins says you're
quite talented.
I was disappointed
to see that you weren't in my class
this y e a r .
26.
Taken aback, Skyler pulls away from the ladder.
stumbles a bit at the top and looks down.
Beatrice
„SKYLER
Sorry about t h a t .
Skyler grabs the ladder,
and Beatrice climbs down.
SKYLER (C O N T 'D )
I learned a lot from Mr. Collins.
I decided to focus on advanced
courses. For my applications.
BEATRICE
I can finish later.
I wanted to
have these up before I started
classes. Figured students could
look to them for inspiration. But
then things were just so busy.
SKYLER
Where did all of these come from?
BEATRICE
Just some little unknowns from my
collection.
Ones I love though of
course.
So, what's up?
SKYLER
Why did you lie?
BEATRICE
Excuse me?
SKYLER
In Mr. Davis' office, you lied so
that I wouldn't get in trouble.
Why?
BEATRICE
Like I said, I couldn't be sure
that it was you.
And even if I
were, I didn't have any proof.
SKYLER
True.
BEATRICE
So you're not even painting in your
spare time?
SKYLER
No.
BEATRICE
Well, your public art is quite
good.
Beatrice smiles.
Skyler says nothing.
BEATRICE (C O N T 'D )
Whenever I'm here, the door's open.
And I'm pretty much here all of the
time.
SKYLER
Thanks.
BEATRICE
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going
to try to squeeze in lunch before
my next class.
Beatrice dusts her hands off on her clothes, grabs a few
things, and leaves.
Skyler takes a look at one of the
paintings on the ground, a landscape piece, and then leaves.
EXT. MADISON PARK DOCK - NIGHT
Carrying a bottle of wine, Skyler and Jezebel approach a
public dock with a view that exposes Lake Washington.
The
park is empty save for Matt, who is sitting at the edge of
the dock playing the guitar and drinking a bottle of alcohol.
Shit.
JEZEBEL
He would be at the spot.
SKYLER
We all used to hang out here.
JEZEBEL
Not anymore. L e t 's g o .
INT. SKYLER'S ROOM - NIGHT
Skyler sits on the floor of her room on her laptop.
Jezebel
lays on the ground next to her and stares at the ceiling.
JEZEBEL
I've always wondered if we were a
good fit.
SKYLER
What?
She looks up from her computer screen.
28.
JEZEBEL
Matt and I .
SKYLER
Why wouldn't you be?
JEZEBEL
Well take you and Jon for example.
You guys make the perfect couple.
SKYLER
I thought you hated the idea of us
together.
Skyler peruses the Princeton website.
JEZEBEL
OK. Fair.
But you're both so
driven.
Despite the fact that I'm
disgusted by the idea of it...
Skyler p a u s e s .
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
You, you're good for each other.
He's a genius, and I'm sure that
he'll be successful, but it's hard
to love Matt and not fall in love
with his bad habits too. You warned
me. I should have listened to you.
Skyler begins writing information down on a piece of paper.
SKYLER
He's writing that song for you.
JEZEBEL
He used to call and make me listen
to him practice the guitar over the
phone.
I always pretended that he
sounded better.
And then one day
he really did.
Overnight.
You'll
check on him for me right?
Skyler puts the pen d o w n .
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
Why don't you just write down a
bunch of schools and hand it in.
You're going to Princeton.
INT. MS. C H A N 'S OFFICE - DAY
Skyler sips tea while Ms. Chan reads from a piece of paper in
silence.
When she's done, she carefully places it down.
MS. CHAN
Thank you for writing that.
SKYLER
I wasn't sure what to write, so I
just went with the first thing that
came to mind.
MS. CHAN
And that was exactly what I wanted
you to do. When was the last time
that you spent time in the
arboretum?
SKYLER
Not since Jez and I were... I don't
know i t 's been a w h i l e .
MS. CHAN
Well, it doesn't matter.
You
should go.
Maybe this weekend?
But this is a good start.
Now
we'll need to start making a list
of all of the required deadlines
for these schools, so that we have
something to work toward.
SKYLER
OK.
MS. CHAN
Good. How's the tea?
SKYLER
Delicious. T h a n k s .
INT. HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY
Skyler walks down the hallway alone, still attracting
attention from students that pass by.
She walks up to
Beatrice's office and finds it shut with another note, which
reads "Hello.
I'm out. But you know where to find me."
Skyler continues down the hallway.
30.
INT. SKYLER'S HOUSE - DAY
Skyler and Jezebel are watching T a x i T o t h e D a r k s l d e on
television.
Dana enters the room and takes one glance at the
screen.
DANA
What's this?
SKYLER
Taxi to the Darkside.
It's about
how we used psychological torture
methods on suspected terrorists.
JEZEBEL
These types of films make me so
sad.
I hate watching them.
DANA
Get out of the house and do
something fun.
Skyler gives Dana a blank stare.
DANA (CONT'D)
What?
SKYLER
Nothing.
DANA
Shopping? Lunch?
SKYLER
Mom. No thanks.
DANA
Alright Alright.
Dana leaves.
Skyler turns to Jezebel and rolls her eyes.
JEZEBEL
Be nice to your mom.
SKYLER
She makes me want to pull my hair
out.
JEZEBEL
So let's get out of here.
SKYLER
To where?
JEZEBEL
Anyw h e r e .
SKYLER
Well, we could always go to the
arboretum.
JEZEBEL
Perfect.
Skyler and Jezebel leave.
Dana returns to find an empty room
as a Guantanamo prisoner hangs in his cell on the television.
She turns the TV off.
EXT. SEATTLE ARBORETUM - DAY
Skyler and Jezebel drive through the arboretum and pull into
the nearly empty park.
EXT. SEATTLE ARBORETUM - DAY
Skyler sits on a park bench and pulls out a small sack of
marijuana, which she begins to roll into a joint.
Jezebel
sits next to her.
JEZEBEL
My favorite place in the city.
The
only place where I can just come
and be still.
You can get lost
h e r e . Then go back to the real
world when you feel like it.
SKYLER
(laughs)
Plus it's the smoke spot.
JEZEBEL
Yeah that too.
Skyler finishes and lights the joint, takes a few puffs, and
hands it to Jezebel, who obliges.
SKYLER
I h a v e n 't smoked in m o n t h s .
JEZEBEL
When was the last time?
SKYLER
With y o u .
Jezebel points in the direction of a mother and her small son
and daughter resting on the grass in the distance, poised
beautifully.
JEZEBEL
Hey, look at them.
Skyler looks at them and then takes her
shoulders and begins digging in it.
bag from around her
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
What are you doing?
SKYLER
Sketching them.
Skyler pulls out pencils and a notebook
the scene in front of her.
They finish
and begins to sketch
the joint.
INT. ART ROOM - DAY
Skyler energetically walks to the art room and bursts through
the door but finds no one.
Disappointed, she turns around.
EXT. BEATRICE'S OFFICE - DAY
Skyler walks up to the closed door, but this time, there's no
note on it.
She hesitates and then knocks.
BEATRICE
Come in p l e a s e .
(O.S.)
Skyler opens the door and e n ters.
INT. BEATRICE'S OFFICE - DAY
Skyler enters the office, which is filled with books,
artifacts, and pieces of art from around the world, all
crammed into the small space in eclectic style.
SKYLER
I came to the art room, but you
weren't there.
BEATRICE
Glad you found me. Have a seat.
Skyler sits down.
33.
SKYLER
Have you been to all of these
places?
Beatrice looks around and t h i n k s .
BEATRICE
Most, yes. A few were just nice
gifts.
SKYLER
This is a lot cooler than Mr.
Polk's office.
BEATRICE
Who?
Mr. Polk.
you.
SKYLER
He had the office before
BEATRICE
Ah! That's right.
Never met him.
But I was lucky to be given a clean
canvas to work with.
I don't
assume that he had much stuff in
here.
SKYLER
No.
BEATRICE
So?
Skyler pulls her sketches out of her bag and hands them to
Beatrice, who glances over them.
BEATRICE
What are these?
(CONT'D)
SKYLER
They're mine.
I drew them over the
weekend.
I was just... I was bored
so I went to the arboretum.
I
don't know what came over me, but
just felt like drawing, and I saw
this family and
BEATRICE
Not bad.
Beatrice hands the sketches back.
BEATRICE (CONT'D)
Thank you for sharing them with me.
SKYLER
That's all?
BEATRICE
Did you want more specific
feedback?
SKYLER
Well I was thinking.
I was
thinking that maybe I should or I
want to start painting again.
I
know that I have a lot to learn and
wanted to see if your offer still
stands.
BEATRICE
My offer.
SKYLER
Yeah. You said that you were always
there. In the art room.
I did.
BEATRICE
And I am.
SKYLER
So would you help me?
BEATRICE
You'll take it seriously?
SKYLER
Yes.
BEATRICE
Twice a week then. After school.
Starting tomorrow.
SKYLER
Oh.
BEATRICE
I'm assuming that works for you?
SKYLER
Sure.
BEATRICE
Tomorrow then.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL CAFETERIA - NEXT DAY
Skyler and Jezebel are sitting down at a table alone eating
their lunch.
JEZEBEL
Why are we in here again?
SKYLER
You're so antisocial.
JEZEBEL
No I'm not.
I love to party.
Jezebel flashes a smile.
SKYLER
Yeah well, when did you start
hating all of our friends?
JEZEBEL
I should ask you the same question.
I d o n 't .
SKYLER
I j u s t...
JEZEBEL
Don't feel like putting up with all
of the bullshit anymore? Speaking
of which.
Janine and two other girls spot them and walk over with their
food.
JANINE
(sitting down)
Hey. Can't sit with us anymore?
SKYLER
It's just so crowded in here all of
the t i m e .
KATE
Sky you have M r . Martin for math
right?
SKYLER
Yeah.
KATE
What did you get on the last quiz?
Jezebel rolls her eyes.
36.
SKYLER
I dunno.
A 98 maybe? I think I
only missed one.
JEZEBEL
Typical.
KATE
You h a v e to help me out.
curve is kickin my b u t t .
That
SKYLER
0 h f I don't know if. .
SAMANTHA
Wait, you guys aren't letting me
finish my story.
KATE
Oh yea, Sam's mom got remarried
over the summer.
SKYLER
Really?
SAMANTHA
Ok so, you remember how she was
dating that man from Chicago,
Keith? He proposed last winter
during the holidays, but they
decided to wait until the summer,
so that they could go on vacation
right after.
Skyler notices Matt looking lost as he looks around the
lunchroom.
Samantha carries on the story, trying to appeal
to everyone at the t a b l e .
SAMANTHA (CONT'D)
The wedding was beautiful, small,
t h a t 's why I d i d n 't invite a n y o n e .
Plus it's my mom's second wedding,
so it makes sense to be small.
It
was down on the pier.
It was great
because I had the whole house to
myself for almost a month after. I
wish you guys would have been h e r e .
Janine nudges Skyler.
JANINE
Are you listening?
Skyler watches Matt leave.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL GYM - AFTERNOON
The basketball team is running lines while the coaches watch.
Jonathan is among them, winded.
After one of the sets, he
struggles more than the rest to catch his breath.
COACH
(to Jonathan quietly)
Take your time son.
I know that
you haven't been at it.
JONATHAN
I'll be fine. Just gotta get back
in shape.
COACH
OK then.
He blows the whistle again and the boys take off.
After the
next set, he blows the whistle twice, signifying that
practice is over.
COACH (CONT'D)
That's it boys.
Good work.
The guys gather their belongings from the bleac h e r s .
COACH (C O N T 'D )
H a r t . .. any words from our Captain?
He looks at Jonathan.
JONATHAN
No Coach.
OK then.
COACH
See you tomorrow.
INT. GYM LOCKER ROOM - AFTERNOON
The guys playfully talk and joke but Jonathan dresses
quietly.
One of his teammates walks by and bumps him.
JONATHAN
Hey!
BRANDON
Chill out Jon my bad.
JONATHAN
I'm just saying, watch where you're
going.
BRANDON
What's your problem man?
They move towards each other, but another teammate moves in
to break them up.
KYLE
Hey, Brandon, relax. Give him a
break.
You know what his problem
is.
JONATHAN
I don't have a problem. Just watch
where you're fucking going.
Jonathan grabs his stuff and bursts through the door exiting.
He immediately sees Skyler, who is waiting for him.
Skyler.
JONATHAN (C O N T 'D )
What are you doing?
She pulls a notebook out of her bag and hands it to him.
SKYLER
You left this in lab.
I didn't
want to have to do all of our work,
so I brought it.
JONATHAN
Thanks.
SKYLER
Sure.
She turns to l e a v e .
JONATHAN
I don't suppose you want to come
over for dinner.
SKYLER
Oh. . .
JONATHAN
We could get food somewhere else.
If that's better.
SKYLER
I have a ton of work.
JONATHAN
Soon I h o p e .
Rain check?
39.
Soon.
SKYLER
I'll see you.
She turns and begins to walk away.
JONATHAN
Hey Sky!
She hesitates but turns around.
SKYLER
Yeah?
JONATHAN
You can at least come to the game.
OK.
SKYLER
(she smiles)
But I can't make any promises.
INT. ART ROOM - AFTERNOON
Beatrice sits in the middle of the art room painting on a
c a n v a s . Skyler e n t e r s .
BEATRICE
There you are.
I'm almost ready to
go.
SKYLER
Go?
BEATRICE
I had an excellent idea for your
first assignment.
When was the
last time that you've been to
Seattle Center?
I don't
maybe.
Great.
SKYLER
know. A year ago. Two
BEATRICE
I've never been.
She puts her painting materials away.
BEATRICE (C O N T 'D )
You'll need a sketchbook.
Skyler pulls one from her bag.'
40.
SKYLER
I 've brought m y ...
Good.
BEATRICE
I'll drive.
Beatrice grabs her k e y s .
SKYLER
Are you sure about this?
INT. SPACE NEEDLE ELEVATOR
Beatrice
and lets
city.
and Skyler are in an elevator which stops at the top
them out.
They walk
outside to the view ofthe
BEATRICE
It's amazing up here.
Just imagine
how impressive it was when it was
first built.
SKYLER
On a clear day, you can see
everything.
All of the mountains.
BEATRICE
And you never want to come up here?
SKYLER
It's always raining,
so no.
BEATRICE
And the last time you were here?
SKYLER
Rained.
BEATRICE
Awful. We've got the same weather
in England.
SKYLER
I've only been once, and I was
l ittle.
BEATRICE
You're missing out. Well, look
around, draw some sketches, think
about your perspective from up
h e r e . Next time we meet y o u 're
going to paint something from your
memory and whatever you record.
SKYLER
I d i d n 't know that I 'd have
assignments.
BEATRICE
If you don't have assignments, how
do you expect to get any better?
Plus, That's the price for me
staying later so that you can
paint.
Get going, we don't have
all day.
Skyler obliges and pulls out the sketchbook.
She walks
around and scribbles portions of drawings and notes regarding
what she sees.
She notes colors: Blue, gray, charcoal,
evergreen.
Beatrice calls from afar, where she's peering
over the edge but turns to shout.
BEATRICE (CONT'D)
Alright t h a t 's enough taking n o t e s .
Put the book away!
Frustrated,
Skyler finishes one last sketch.
BEATRICE (CONT'D)
Some things you just have to feel.
Beatrice closes her eyes and leans forward, taking a deep
breath of the air.
Then she looks at Skyler.
BEATRICE
Soak it in.
(CONT'D)
Skyler looks over the edge.
Beatrice points to one of the
rides in Seattle center that sends two carriages on opposite
ends spinning into a circle that reaches high into the sky.
BEATRICE
What's that?
(CONT'D)
Skyler looks in the direction that she p o i n t s .
SKYLER
A terrifying ride that I 'd never go
on.
BEATRICE
Oh come on. Let's go!
SKYLER
I don't think so.
EXT. SEATTLE CENTER - AFTERNOON
Skyler and Beatrice are in the middle of the ride.
Beatrice
screams as Skyler looks out at their surroundings passing by.
INT. SKYLER'S HOUSE - EVENING
Skyler walks into the house and finds her mother in the
kitchen putting food back into the refrigerator.
DANA
There you a r e .
SKYLER
Sorry I missed dinner.
DANA
I was worried.
called.
You should have
SKYLER
I said sorry.
DANA
Where were you?
SKYLER
I stayed late with a teacher.
Needed some extra help with bio.
I
might keep it up a couple of days a
week.
DANA
That's a good idea, but it isn't
you.
I thought you liked biology.
I do.
SKYLER
It's just harder now.
DANA
Well keep working at it.
Do you
want me to heat something up for
you?
No t h a n k s .
SKYLER
I have work to d o .
Dana goes back to packing the refrigerator.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
When does dad get home?
DANA
Not for another couple of weeks
Sky.
He hasn't given me an exact
date.
SKYLER
But you've spoken to him?
DANA
He did call and asked to speak to
you while you were out.
INT. SKYLER'S ROOM - NIGHT
Skyler sketches some images from the Space Needle.
INT. ART ROOM - AFTERNOON
Skyler walks into the room to find it empty. In the center of
the room is an easle, completely set up with supplies for one
person.
She walks over to it and sits down.
There's a note
that reads "start without me. one painting, one week."
Shocked, Skyler pauses for a moment and examines the
materials.
Eventually, she pulls out her sketches from the
Space Needle and starts.
INT. ART ROOM - AFTERNOON
Beatrice enters with a bag of cookies.
BEATRICE
Cookies?
SKYLER
N o . Th a n k s .
Beatrice goes to the ladder, and begins to hang the last few
paintings on the ground.
The wall above is almost full with
paintings now.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
How am I supposed to finish
paintings in one week.
BEATRICE
By doing. Not thinking.
44.
INT. HISTORY CLASS - MORNING
Skyler and Jezebel are in their normal seats but Skyler is
sketching in her notebook.
NATHANIEL
I found it rather hard to find
anything about Rwanda that was
written at that actual time.
Mostly, what I found was written
later.
And most of those articles
were very brief.
MS. KLEIN
Interesting.
Did anyone find
something worth noting?
JEZEBEL
(whispering)
What are you drawing?
Skyler lifts up her paper a bit so that Jezebel can see.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
(whispering)
Husky Stadium? From memory?
SKYLER
(whispering)
I went yesterday.
JEZEBEL
(whispering louder)
What?
SKYLER
Shhhhh.
The student in front of Skyler turns around and squints at
her.
Another student, CHIN-HO (17) raises his hand.
MS. KLEIN
Chin - Ho. What have you got?
CHIN HO
A New York Times article about
Clinton's opinion on whether or not
it could be considered genocide.
Excellent.
us.
MS. KLEIN
Read the beginning to
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - LATER
Skyler and Jezebel are standing next to the school building.
Jezebel is eating candy.
JEZEBEL
So what's this about the Husky
Stadium?
SKYLER
I dunno.
JEZEBEL
What do you mean?
SKYLER
I started painting. A little.
JEZEBEL
Really? On your own?
SKYLER
I don't have time for the class.
JEZEBEL
Haven't I always said that you have
talent?
SKYLER
T h a n k s . I k n o w , you h a v e .
JEZEBEL
So you're painting the Husky
Stadium? That's cool.
SKYLER
Yeah.
Well no, not exactly.
I'm
not sure.
I'm just sketching a
bunch of stuff right now.
JEZEBEL
And you're doing this all on your
own?
SKYLER
No.
Jezebel looks at her as if to say,
"explain".
SKYLER (CONT'D)
Beatrice Field is spending some
time after school to teach me some
technique.
46.
JEZEBEL
Beatrice.
She t h i n k s .
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
That new teacher who almost busted
us?
SKYLER
Yeah, her.
JEZEBEL
Crazy.
SKYLER
I know.
JEZEBEL
Isn't she weird?
SKYLER
I guess a little.
Just eccentric.
But she's cool.
JEZEBEL
Oh.
Well you don't have to paint
after school today do you?
SKYLER
No.
JEZEBEL
Good.
SKYLER
Why?
JEZEBEL
Because I was going to ask you if
you'd check on Matt for me.
SKYLER
J e z , I ...
JEZEBEL
I just want to know how he's doing.
SKYLER
Fine.
JEZEBEL
And then you'll call me right after
so that we can talk?
Skyler nods in surrender.
JEZEBEL
You're the best.
(CONT'D)
EXT. MATT'S HOUSE - EVENING
Skyler approaches the side of the house, which has a ladder
leading to the roof.
She climbs up to the top to find Matt,
bundled up, drinking from a bottle of whiskey, and playing
his guitar.
SKYLER
I thought I'd find you up here.
Matt stops playing.
MATT
Look who it i s .
SKYLER
Surprise.
MATT
What are you doing here?
SKYLER
Jez sent me to check on you.
MATT
I bet she did.
SKYLER
And for good reason apparently.
You're drinking again? Fine line
you're walking, don't you think?
She picks up the half empty b o t t l e .
MATT
I know how to handle myself. Jesus,
you sound like Laura H a r t .
SKYLER
Now that isn't fair.
MATT
That woman hates m e .
SKYLER
No she doesn't.
MATT
Blames me for all of her daughter's
p rob l e m s .
SKYLER
You know how mothers a r e . My mom
is the same way, only she doesn't
let me have problems.
Skyler smiles.
MATT
At least your mom isn't a
psychologist.
SKYLER
TrueJ How's she doing?
MATT
Gone for a month. Book tour.
SKYLER
Ahhh. Must be nice.
MATT
It's quiet.
Matt takes a swig from the bottle and offers some to Skyler.
No t h a n k s .
anything?
SKYLER
Have you eaten
Matt shakes his head no.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
Would you like to?
MATT
You'd do anything to get me down
from the roof wouldn't you?
SKYLER
Yes.
MATT
Fine. But I get to pick the place.
EXT. DOWNTOWN SEATTLE DIVE BAR - NIGHT
Skyler and Matt walk up to the bar.
The doorman greets Matt
as if he knows him well and doesn't ask either of them for
ID.
SKYLER
This place serves food?
MATT
Yea. Small menu, but they have the
best hot wings in this city.
INT. DOWNTOWN SEATTLE DIVE BAR - NIGHT
Inside the bar is an eclectic group of people.
Some are
drinking and others are intensely singing and dancing along
to the 8 0 's songs that the DJ, who looks like nerd, is
playing.
SKYLER
I'm not even going to ask how you
know about this place.
MATT
Yeah, don't.
They sit down at a small table.
A waiter approaches them.
WAITER
What's up Matt?
MATT
Not much.
WAITER
It's been a while.
How are things?
MATT
They've been better, but I can't
complain.
Can I just get the
usual?
Sure.
WAITER
And for you?
He looks at Skyler.
SKYLER
Nothing t h a n k s .
WAITER
You sure?
Skyler is peeved.
SKYLER
Yeah.
WAITER
OK.
MATT
You have to have a drink.
SKYLER
No.
She turns to the waiter.
SKYLER (C O N T 'D )
Really, I'm fine.
The waiter turns to lea v e.
MATT
One drink.
The waiter returns.
SKYLER
Fine. A Blue Moon?
WAITER
You got it.
MATT
What is it with girls and Blue
Moon?
SKYLER
It's good.
MATT
It's sweet.
SKYLER
Whatever.
MATT
I don't remember you being this
u p t ight.
SKYLER
What are you talking about?
MATT
Have you always been this uptight
SKYLER
I'm not uptight.
MATT
You definitely weren't this uptight
in Ms. Jones' class when you showed
me your p a n ties.
SKYLER
In kindergarten?
She laughs.
MATT
Yeah, you were ready.
SKYLER
I thought you forgot about
Gross.
that.
MATT
Never.
Well,
SKYLER
I'm not uptight.
The waiter delivers their drinks.
to drink h e r s .
Skyler immediately starts
SKYLER (CONT'D)
I'm just focused.
MATT
On what?
SKYLER
Everything.
Grades. College. My
future.
MATT
Bullshit.
SKYLER
What?
MATT
That's bullshit Sky.
You're a
brilliant girl.
Shit, everyone at
our school is brilliant.
That's
what I've realized.
The waiter delivers Matt's food, a triple order or wings.
WAITER
Can I get you anything else?
MATT
Another Blue Moon for her.
The waiter nods and leaves before Skyler can say anything.
MATT (CONT'D)
I mean, contrary to popular belief,
I wind up in rehab just because I
like to party.
It was just all of
this unnecessary pressure that I
put on myself that I could never
live up to.
And then I realized,
I'm going to be fine.
I don't have
to be perfect, ya know?
SKYLER
I guess.
MATT
Trust me.
You should stop focusing
on being focused for five minutes
and have a little fun.
In the background, the small crowd by the DJ is singing along
to Prince at the top of their lungs.
MATT
Care to dance?
(CONT'D)
SKYLER
Could I say no?
MATT
Nope.
He gets up and grabs her arm, pulling her to the makeshift
dance floor.
They begin to slow dance but are the only ones.
Around them, everyone dances to their own beat.
MATT (CONT'D)
So what's going on with Jonathan?
SKYLER
Nothing.
We have biology together.
W e 're lab p a rtners. Other than
that, we barely talk.
Matt pauses.
MATT
Skyler, don't be stupid.
INT. DOWNTOWN SEATTLE. DIVE BAR - LATER
Skyler and Matt have joined the slightly bigger crowd in
singing along. DARLA (22), a regular at the bar, drunkenly
approaches them.
DARLA
Matt]
MATT
DarlaI
DARLA
What's new kid?
MATT
Not a thing.
DARLA
(to Skyler)
Jezebel right? I haven't seen you
guys here in forever.
MATT
Oh, no Darla this is my friend
Skyler.
Skyler, meet Darla.
SKYLER
Hello.
DARLA
Oh shit.
My bad.
like Jezebel.
You look just
SKYLER
Don't worry about it.
DARLA
You've got good taste Matt.
She pats him on the back and shuffles away dancing and
singing.
SKYLER
I should get h o m e .
MATT
Yeah.
INT. DRUGSTORE - NIGHT
Skyler and Jezebel walk down the aisles scanning the products
until they reach the hair d y e s .
JEZEBEL
I don't see how dying your hair
could be considered an emergency.
SKYLER
How about this one?
Skyler selects a nearly black color.
That dark?
JEZEBEL
What's gotten into you?
SKYLER
I just need a change.
They walk up to the cashier.
CASHIER
Did you have trouble finding
anything today?
SKYLER
No.
The cashier scans the item.
CASHIER
You have such pretty hair.
If I
were you, I wouldn't change a
thing.
SKYLER
Th a n k s .
INT. SKYLER'S BATHROOM - NIGHT
Skyler applies the hair dye while looking in her bathroom
mirror. Jezebel sits and watches her.
JEZEBEL
You've barely told me anything.
How was he?
SKYLER
Well what else do you want me to
say?
JEZEBEL
I d o n 't k n o w ... m o r e .
SKYLER
He seems to have things more
figured out than I do.
JEZEBEL
Figured out?
Well I hope that he
doesn't have a second stint in
rehab.
Jezebel lifts up her shirt and looks at her side in the
mirror, revealing a tattoo.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
Do you remember the night that I
got my first tattoo?
SKYLER
You were drunk.
JEZEBEL
Flip cup. That's why.
It was the
night that we defeated Matt and
that hippie kid who used to always
come a r o und..
SKYLER
Dennis.
JEZEBEL
(laughs)
Yeah Dennis.
His name never fit
him.
Skyler moves to the bathtub and begins to rinse her hair.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
Jon was so mad at me that night. He
was always mad.
Why did I end up
getting the tattoo again?
SKYLER
You lost a bet.
Skyler reaches her hand towards Jezebel, who hands her the
shampoo.
She begins washing her hair.
JEZEBEL
Oh yeahI The chugging bet! Holy
shit I was scared that it was going
to hurt, but it didn't.
Thank God
that I actually love my tattoo.
Could you imagine? What if it was
awful looking?
INT. S KYLER'S BATHROOM - LATER
Skyler and Jezebel look in the mirror as Skyler unwraps her
now short, dark hair from a towel and begins to comb it.
SKYLER
What do you think?
JEZEBEL
I don't like it.
INT. SCIENCE LAB - DAY
TITLE READS: WINTER
Skyler and Jonathan are quietly working on another lab
assignment.
Jonathan has a bandage around one hand and tries
to work with the other.
JONATHAN
You changed your hair.
SKYLER
(sarcastically)
Oh you noticed?
JONATHAN
Why?
SKYLER
Felt like something different.
Tired of being...
JONATHAN
Blond?
SKYLER
Yeah.
JONATHAN
You'd look good to me no matter
what color your hair w a s .
SKYLER
What happened to your hand?
JONATHAN
I had an accident.
Skyler pauses to look at him.
JONATHAN (CONT'D)
I punched a hole through my bedroom
wall.
SKYLER
Jesus.
JONATHAN
It'll be fine, but I have to sit
for a couple g a m e s .
SKYLER
Why'd you do it?
I dunno.
b e i n g ...
JONATHAN
I guess I'm just tired of
SKYLER
Perfect?
JONATHAN
Yeah.
I should get this off in a
week.
I expect to see you at a
game after that.
EXT. SEATTLE PIER - AFTERNOON
Skyler and Beatrice walk around the p i e r s , sketching people
on the boardwalk and drawing the views of the ocean and the
surroundings.
BEATRICE
What's the furthest thing that you
can see in the distance?
SKYLER
Clearly?
BEATRICE
Yeah.
SKYLER
That barge out there to the left.
She points towards a large barge in the middle of the water.
BEATRICE
OK. Now sketch the furthest thing
that you can imagine.
INT. NATIVE AMERICAN ART GALLERY - AFTERNOON
Skyler and Beatrice walk around the gallery looking at art.
Beatrice points out different elements within the art to
Skyler.
When Skyler isn't looking, Beatrice puts on a mask
and then scares her with it and laughs.
INT. ART ROOM - AFTERNOON
Skyler has tons of sketches spread out across an art table.
Beatrice is going through them and examining them.
There are
also small paintings of different mediums scattered across.
Beatrice taps her pencil on one particular sketch, a Native
American inspired Orca whale, as if to say that she likes it.
EXT. GREEN LAKE IN SEATTLE - AFTERNOON
Skyler and Beatrice walk around Green Lake, talking and
laughing.
They stop to buy ice cream off of a truck, try on
crazy looking hats at a small hat vendor on the lake, and
sketch people who walk and run around the lake.
Beatrice
points out elements in Skyler's sketches of the people that
could be improved, explaining it to her.
INT. MS. CHAN'S OFFICE
Skyler and Ms. Chan are seated in their regular positions.
Skyler sips tea.
MS. CHAN
Any problems with your applications
so far?
SKYLER
Nope.
M S . CHAN
Good.
I want to read your essays
as you finish your drafts.
I think
that your general essay is looking
really good.
Now we just need to
focus on tailoring each one based
on what each school is asking.
But
your SAT score report is very
exciting.
Skyler, keep in mind
that it's often a numbers game, but
I don't think you'll have any
trouble getting into Princeton.
Skyler forces a smile.
59.
INT. SKYLER'S KITCHEN - MORNING
Skyler is seated, Dana is serving her breakfast, and Adam is
engrossed in his ipad and pouring coffee.
DANA
I still haven't gotten used to this
new hair color.
SKYLER
I kinda like it.
DANA
It's so harsh.
SKYLER
Anyway, Dad there's this event next
week at an art gallery downtown.
Modern art influenced by
architecture and technology or
something like that.
I don't
remember, but it sounds really
cool.
I was thinking that maybe we
could go.
Adam looks up for a moment.
ADAM
I'm sorry Sky, I wish I could, but
I'm supposed to go to New York on
Monday to meet with a new potential
cl i e n t .
SKYLER
Oh.
ADAM
How did you hear about it?
SKYLER
My art teacher was telling me about
it.
DANA
Which teacher is this?
taking art.
You're not
SKYLER
Beatrice Field.
You know her, you
met her in Mr. Davis' office.
She's just been showing me a couple
of things, new techniques.
DANA
Shouldn't you be focusing on your
college applications Sky?
SKYLER
I am.
ADAM
Yeah Sky, now is not the time for
distractions.
SKYLER
(defeated)
Right.
Ms. Chan is confident that
I '11 get into Princeton without a
problem.
ADAM
T h a t 's great n e w s .
INT. HISTORY CLASS - DAY
Skyler and Jezebel are both taking notes diligently.
JEZEBEL
Where have you been?
SKYLER
Painting.
JEZEBEL
Well excuse me, I miss my friendi
SKYLER
Can we talk about this after class?
I'm actually trying to listen.
MS. KLEIN
History proves in this case that
success is granted, perhaps, to
those who are willing to take a
risk and follow their passions.
But, I digress from our topic.
INT. SKYLER'S ROOM - NIGHT
Skyler flips through a stack of large envelopes addressed to
different universities.
She looks at the Princeton online
application on her computer screen and moves her mouse over
the "submit" button but hesitates.
She exits the screen and
grabs the envelopes.
EXT. SKYLER'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Skyler walks up to the mailbox in the rain.
She slides just
one envelope into the mailbox and shuts it, putting the flag
up.
She goes to the trash can and dumps the rest of the
envelopes.
EXT. FREEMONT ART GALLERY - AFTERNOON
Skyler and Beatrice approach the seemingly small gallery,
which has no sign or name on the front.
SKYLER
How do you know all of these
artists?
You just moved here.
BEATRICE
Art communities are pretty much the
same everywhere.
Small.
All you
have to do is immerse yourself into
the culture, and you'll find that
you meet those with talent almost
immediately.
Raj is great, you'll
love him.
SKYLER
What kind of paintings did you say
he specialized in again?
BEATRICE
Portraits.
Beatrice swings the door open.
Inside, the space is much
more expansive and impressive.
An exhibit of large portraits
hangs on the w a l l s . Beatrice y e l l s .
BEATRICE
(CONT'D)
Hello!
RAJ (O.S.)
B! I'll be right there.
Skyler walks around the room examining Raj's work.
They are
eclectic portraits of all different types of people.
SKYLER
These are incredible.
BEATRICE
Aren't they?
I knew you'd
appreciate his work.
SKYLER
Is there something that unifies
them all?
Raj enters the room smiling with arms open to embrace
Beatrice.
RAJ
Yes! All of my subjects were still
alive when I painted them.
He smiles and hugs Beatrice.
RAJ (CONT'D)
Hello darling.
SKYLER
And who is this one?
Skyler points to a specific painting of an old woman with a
near expressionless face.
RAJ
My Mona Lisa. A street vendor in
Bangladesh.
She never moved from
her post, which made her a very
easy model.
Raj and Beatrice join Skyler at the painting and examines it.
RAJ (CONT'D)
Why are you drawn to this one?
SKYLER
Her facial expression.
It barely
says anything at all, and yet, it's
so sad.
RAJ
It's true.
I think people wear
their sadness on their faces.
They
don't even have to say what they're
thinking for their sorrow to show.
Skyler stares at the painting.
subject.
Beatrice quickly changes the
BEATRICE
Raj, Skyler. Skyler, Raj.
Raj gives Skyler an overly dramatic hug.
RAJ
I've heard a lot about you.
63.
SKYLER
You have?
RAJ
Yes.
Beatrice tells me that you're
a burgeoning young talent and that
we must get your work into a show.
Raj looks at Beatrice as if they've already discussed the
matter.
SKYLER
Are you serious?
RAJ
Of course. It would be kind of rude
of me to joke about a matter like
that with a stranger don't you
think?
SKYLER
Wow.
I'd never even thought of the
i d e a . I , I d o n 't even have any
work completed!
BEATRICE
Well, we were thinking of some time
over the su m m e r. I know that
you're not a student in art this
year, but I'm sure that I could
pull a few strings and get you
included into the end of the year
showcase event as a lead in.
That
is, if you'd like.
SKYLER
I 'd love t h a t .
RAJ
Good then it's settled.
First the
school and then the world!
BEATRICE
Have a look around Skyler.
we'll paint.
Then
SKYLER
Paint? Here?
BEATRICE
Raj has this amazing studio in the
back.
I figured we'd play around a
little bit and see what we come up
with.
SKYLER
Cool.
INT. RAJ'S STUDIO - LATER
Skyler, Beatrice, and Raj are at a long table creating a
piece together with finger paints and laughing.
Beatrice
spills a little bit of the paint.
BEATRICE
Oh fuck.
Raj shoots Beatrice a warning face.
BEATRICE
(CONT'D)
Oh sorry!
Raj takes his hand and slaps it playfully across Beatrice's
face.
RAJ
Watch your language!
Beatrice slaps him back.
BEATRICE
I said I was sorry! Now look what
y o u 've d o n e , y o u 've gone and gotten
paint all over m e .
Raj and Beatrice look at each other and then look at Skyler.
SKYLER
What? No.
They chase her across the room.
INT. SKYLER'S HOUSE
Skyler comes home with paint on her clothes and disheveled.
Dana greets her at the d o o r .
DANA
Studying late again?
Skyler is startled.
SKYLER
Yeah.
DANA
You're a mess.
65.
SKYLER
I had to help Matt with his art
project.
You know he doesn't know
what he's doing.
Skyler moves to the kitchen and Dana follows her.
DANA
Well y o u 'd better hurry up and
c h ange.
SKYLER
What?
Skyler begins washing her hands at the sink, trying to scrub
the paint off of her h a n d s .
DANA
The basketball game is tonight. I
thought you said you were going.
SKYLER
Shit I forgot.
DANA
Skyler.
Skyler dries her hands and begins perusing through the
fridge, until she stumbles on some grapes, which she begins
to munch on.
SKYLER
I didn't say that I was going.
I
said that Jonathan asked me to.
Only he keeps asking, and I keep
not going.
DANA
You should g o .
SKYLER
I'm not even dressed.
Besides, I
don't feel like dealing with all of
those people tonight.
DANA
Those people used to be the friends
that you hung out with.
I don't
understand why y o u 're cutting them
off all of the sudden.
SKYLER
All they talk about is grades and
college and bla bla bla and who is
doing this and that and all of the
same things that we've talked about
since middle school.
And I'm over
it.
DANA
Well, I'm sure that Jonathan needs
the support, don't you think?
SKYLER
His family will be there.
DANA
Sky.
SKYLER
This is exactly why I should never
have said anything to you about it.
DANA
I just want you to have fun honey.
SKYLER
If I go, will you shut up about it?
INT. HIGH SCHOOL GYM
- NIGHT
The basketball game has already started and Jonathan is in
the game.
Skyler and Jezebel are sitting in the top corner
of the bleachers.
JEZEBEL
There they a r e .
SKYLER
Where?
Jezebel points in the direction of CALVIN (50's) and LAURA
HART (50's disheveled), her parents, sitting in the middle of
the bleachers.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
I feel rude not saying hello.
JEZEBEL
We can't go over there.
They'll
want us to sit with them.
You know
I can't stand the way they are at
sporting events.
67.
A player from the other team fouls Jonathan in the game.
Jezebel stands up, infuriated.
Calvin makes the same motion.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
(yelling)
Oh come on!
Make them play fair!
SKYLER
So that explains where you get it
from.
JEZEBEL
As much as my brother works my
nerves, I cannot stand to see
anyone else hurt him.
Jonathan makes a foul shot.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
That's it! Make the next one!
SKYLER
I haven't seen your mom in months.
JEZEBEL
She's doing OK.
SKYLER
Really?
JEZEBEL
Well, how can I know for sure? You
know?
SKYLER
Yeah. When Jonathan punched that
hole in the wall it worried me.
JEZEBEL
Seriously?
SKYLER
Yeah.
I worry that he's going to
just hold everything inside until
one day he explodes.
JEZEBEL
So what do you think you can do
about it?
SKYLER
I don't know.
Maybe nothing.
But
I haven't been a friend.
Haven't
tried to talk to him.
JEZEBEL
Trust me, Jonathan doesn't like to
talk.
Across the gym, Janine and Samantha sit with a group of kids
who are talking and laughing.
They're the "cool" kids, but
they're a diverse and eclectic group.
Janine spots Skyler
and Jezebel and waves them over.
JEZEBEL (CONT'D)
Janine is waving at us.
Skyler shrugs in response to Janine, who rolls her eyes and
says something to Samantha as she points their way.
Just
then a fight breaks out in the game and catches everyone's
attention.
In the middle of the fight is Jonathan, who is on
top of a member of the opposite team wailing on him.
The
referees struggle to break up the fight as Jonathan continues
to punch the kid in the face.
JEZEBEL
(CONT'D)
Oh my God.
Calvin runs down to the floor as Laura yells out for Jonathan
to stop.
SKYLER
Now are you worried?
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - AFTERNOON
Beatrice and Skyler meet up outside of one of the buildings.
Beatrice hands Skyler some materials to carry, and they begin
walking to the parking lot.
BEATRICE
Great news.
You're in the
showcase. I think that final piece
you're working on will be great for
it.
SKYLER
You're the best.
BEATRICE
Skyler, you've really been applying
yourself and it shows in your work.
I t 's improved.
SKYLER
Really?
I've been thinking about
taking a year off before college
and just traveling and painting.
69.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
Maybe portraits, like what Raj did
but my style instead.
BEATRICE
I think t h a t 's a great i d e a .
SKYLER
I've been looking into grants to
apply for.
I just have to figure
out how to tell my p a r e n t s .
BEATRICE
Once they see your work, they'll
understand.
They pass a walk way.
I hope so.
today?
SKYLER
Where are we going
BEATRICE
Well, I was thinking that we could
meet Raj at his studio and then
decide from there.
The world is
ours!
SKYLER
Honestly, these afternoons are all
I have to look forward to anymore.
Beatrice p a u s e s .
BEATRICE
I've been enjoying myself too
Skyler.
They walk off and Janine emerges from around the corner.
She
watches the two of them get into Beatrice's car and drive
off.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - MORNING
Matt and Skyler share a cigarette while Jezebel watches from
a distance.
Skyler looks at her for a brief moment and then
turns back to Matt.
Jezebel walks off.
MATT
T h e r e 's a party on Saturday at
S amantha's hou s e .
SKYLER
You going?
70.
MATT
I was thinking about i t . It's been
a while since I enjoyed a good
party with my p e e r s . Maybe i t 's
time to get back in the saddle.
Skyler passes Matt the cigarette.
MATT (CONT'D)
I haven't been drinking.
SKYLER
Good.
MATT
I thought about what you said.
You're right.
Slippery slope.
SKYLER
I'm glad.
MATT
I think i t 's a good thing that
you're painting again.
SKYLER
How did you know?
Matt rubs her fingers, which have paint on them, as he takes
the cigarette.
MATT
Jez always talked about how
talented you w e r e . She envied y o u .
SKYLER
That's silly.
Why would Jez be
envious of me?
MATT
Why wouldn't she be? Her brother
loves you, her mother wishes that
you were her daughter, and there's
seemingly nothing you can't do.
SKYLER
That isn't true.
MATT
Isn't it?
INT. SCIENCE LAB - DAY
Jonathan and Skyler are quietly recording results in their
lab notebooks.
SKYLER
Is everything alright?
JONATHAN
Fine. Why?
SKYLER
I was at your game.
I saw your
fight.
I've never seen you so
angry Jon.
JONATHAN
I don't really want to talk about
getting kicked off of the team.
SKYLER
I'm sorry I didn't know.
EXT. ART ROOM - AFTERNOON
Skyler approaches the art room with excitement but finds it
closed and locked to her surprise.
She leaves.
INT. SKYLER'S HOUSE - EVENING
Skyler enter the house to find both of her parents waiting
for her in the living room with angry faces.
SKYLER
What's going on?
DANA
Skyler, you need to explain what
the hell has been going on.
And
choose your words carefully.
SKYLER
I'm not sure I know what you mean.
DANA
You lied.
You haven't been staying
at school after hours to study
biology, you have been hanging out
with that young art teacher.
ADAM
Skyler, this behavior is beyond
inappropriate. We have no idea
where you've been going with this
woman.
We don't even know this
woman.
DANA
And what is this whole relationship
even about?
SKYLER
It's about art!
I wanted to paint,
and I asked her to teach m e . I
knew that you would never let me
take the class if I told you that I
wanted to, so Beatrice.
DANA
Ms. Field.
SKYLER
M s . Field agreed to teach me after
s c hool.
ADAM
Then why have you been leaving
campus with her?
SKYLER
Because she's been taking me places
around the city to sketch things
and see art.
Meet artists.
It's
completely innocent.
ADAM
Skyler you did not have our
permission to do this.
SKYLER
I know, and I'm sorry.
But.
DANA
Mr. Davis has suspended Ms. Field
from teaching until he investigates
the matter further, after which I'm
sure that she will be fired.
You're not to see her.
SKYLER
What? You can't do this! Painting
is the only thing that I even care
about.
And my work is good.
It's
REALLY g o o d .
73.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
My self portrait is going to be one
of the features in the showcase.
ADAM
Finish the piece and let this
showcase be the end of it.
You
need to focus on finishing the
second half of the school year with
grades that won't negatively affect
your chances of getting accepted
into the schools you applied for.
SKYLER
You mean Princeton.
ADAM
What was that?
SKYLER
You mean grades that won't
negatively affect my chances of
getting accepted to Princeton.
DANA
Hon e y , it's what you've been
working towards your whole life
thus far.
SKYLER
I hate you.
I hate you both.
don't even know me.
You
She points to her father.
And you.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
You're never even here.
ADAM
Skyler.
SKYLER
Just forget it.
Here are your
invites to the showcase.
She pulls two invitations from her bag and tosses them onto
the couch near them.
She turns to walk away and then turns
a round.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
And by the way.
I'm not going to
Princeton.
I never sent in my
application.
74.
EXT. MADISON PARK DOCK - NIGHT.
Jezebel and Skyler sit on the edge of the dock drinking.
JEZEBEL
I don't even know what to tell you.
SKYLER
Thanks, that's helpful.
JEZEBEL
D o n 't take it out on m e .
SKYLER
You never have any advice do you?
JEZEBEL
What?
SKYLER
Every time you have a problem, I
have to hold your hand through it.
Tell you what to do.
Tell you it's
going to be alright.
But when I
have a problem, you have nothing to
say.
JEZEBEL
I told you that teacher was weird,
but you didn't listen. It's not my
fault you got in trouble for
blatantly breaking school rules and
lying to your p arents.
SKYLER
She's not weird.
She's an artist.
And a great teacher who is actually
fun to be around.
And your wrong.
This whole situation is your fault.
JEZEBEL
How so?
SKYLER
Jez you used to be my best friend
until you turned into this
miserable, selfish, self loathing,
and self indulgent, bitch who
refuses to take responsibility for
her own actions.
JEZEBEL
Bitch?
SKYLER
All we do is talk about the good
times that we used to have before
you hated your life and everyone in
it.
They say that misery loves
company right? Well
congratulations, you have
successfully brought me down with
you.
JEZEBEL
What are you saying?
SKYLER
I'm saying that maybe if I hadn't
wasted my time, then I wouldn't
feel so dead inside.
JEZEBEL
You don't mean that.
Yes, I do.
life.
SKYLER
You are ruining my
Jezebel gets up and collects her t h i n g s .
JEZEBEL
That's funny, because you were one
of the best things about mine.
She walks away.
Skyler takes her bottle and chugs it into
the lake, then sits down and cries.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
Skyler walks down the hallway by herself.
Other students
stare at her and some whisper.
Janine is at her locker but
turns away when she sees her coming.
MR COLLINS (60's) spots
Skyler in the hallway and approaches her.
MR. COLLINS
Skyler. I've been looking for you.
SKYLER
I'm going to be late for class Mr.
Collins.
MR. COLLINS
Beatrice explained everything to me
in detail.
Not to worry, you're
still in the showcase.
SKYLER
I was going to talk to you about
that.
I don't think it makes much
sense.
I haven't finished my
piece.
I don't even know where it
is.
MR. COLLINS
I have it.
It's in the art room.
I stored it for safekeeping.
All
you have to do is find the time to
work on it.
SKYLER
We'll see.
MR. COLLINS
Skyler, my family didn't want me to
pursue my art either.
The best way
to get what you want is to show
them what you can do.
SKYLER
Thanks Mr. Collins.
INT. SKYLER'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Skyler sits and watches television,
ch annels. Her dad e nters.
flipping through the
ADAM
What are you watching?
SKYLER
T h e r e 's nothing o n .
ADAM
Care for company?
SKYLER
Not really.
ADAM
Well, technically this is a public
area.
So I suppose I'll just sit
down.
SKYLER
No problem. I was just leaving.
EXT. SAMANTHA'S HOUSE - NIGHT
The party is crowded with kids who are drinking and talking
outside.
Skyler enters the front door, much to the surprise
of the people inside.
She's already been drinking.
SAMANTHA
Oh my God! Sky! You came!
SKYLER
Yeah.
Samantha grabs her arm and takes her to the kitchen.
SAMANTHA
Come on.
It's been so long since
we partied.
You are taking shots.
Samantha creates a space for them in the kitchen where
several other kids are taking shots.
SAMANTHA (CONT'D)
Pour us some shots!
The kids erupt into cheers for the new additions. One boy
pours shots into two shot glasses and hands them to them.
Skyler and Samantha start to take shots.
From across the
room, Matt pauses a conversation to watch them.
SAMANTHA (CONT'D)
Janine was so sure that you weren't
going to come, but X was hoping
you'd show up.
SKYLER
(to the boy)
Hit me again please.
He pours her another shot, which she drinks immediately.
SAMANTHA
Come o n . .. I want you to meet my
new boy.
The two of them walk off into a different part of the house.
Skyler is quite drunk now.
Samantha looks around for the
boy, but they run into Janine instead, who has also had too
much to drink.
JANINE
Look who it i s .
78.
SKYLER
I'm just trying to have fun Janine.
I don't need any attitude.
JANINE
Well we're glad that you could make
an appearance at the party!
SAMANTHA
Janine, be nice.
SKYLER
What the hell is your problem?
JANINE
My problem? What is your problem?
Ever since the first day of school
you've been acting like you don't
want anything to do with u s . Your
friends.
People begin to pay attention as their voices escalate.
SKYLER
What do you want from me Janine?
I've been dealing with things.
It's not your life.
Why are you so
concerned?
JANINE
Dealing with things?
You haven't
been dealing with anything at a l l .
SAMANTHA
Come on g u y s . Cut it o u t .
JANINE
No Sam.
Janine moves towards Skyler, confronting her.
JANINE (CONT'D)
I'm sorry but Jezebel is dead.
We
all miss her, and we all wish that
we could bring her back, but we
can't.
It's no reason to walk
around like a corpse and ignore all
of the people who are still here
and love y o u .
SKYLER
Janine. Shut. Up.
JANINE
Ever since we got back to school,
your behavior has just gotten even
more strange.
And then when I saw
you leaving with that t e a c h e r . I
had to say something.
You
seriously need help Sky.
SKYLER
How could you?
JANINE
I wasn't going to let her take
advantage of y o u .
SKYLER
You don't know what you're talking
about.
You might have gotten a
completely innocent person fired,
because you're an idiot.
Matt enters the room and tries to make his way towards
Skyler.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
Jez was rightYou're too
concerned with everyone else's life
to get a life of your o w n .
JANINE
Well at least I'm still living.
Samantha gasps.
Skyler lunges at her.
SKYLER
You bitchI Take it back!
SAMANTHA
Guys! Please stop!
The two of them roll around on the ground until Matt breaks
in and grabs Skyler.
Everyone else watches in shock.
Matt
takes Skyler into his arms as she s o b s .
MATT
Everyone get out.
The crowd begins to clear out of the area.
MATT (CONT'D)
(to Janine)
Go home Janine.
He walks with Skyler to the d o o r .
80.
MATT (CONT'D)
(to Samantha)
I '11 take her h o m e .
SAMANTHA
OK. I love you Sky.
INT. MATT'S CAR - NIGHT
Skyler has calmed down but is still crying.
MATT
She broke up with m e .
SKYLER
What?
Jezebel.
MATT
She broke up with me.
SKYLER
She told me that you dumped her.
MATT
No.
She was out of control, and I
told her that she needed to slow
down.
She begged me to get pills
for her, and I refused.
So she
broke it off with me.
I know that
everyone thinks that I pushed her
over the e d g e . I know t h a t 's what
her mom must think.
But I've been
able to live with the fact that I
told her no.
SKYLER
You should tell M r s . Hart the
truth.
Yeah well,
anymore.
MATT
it doesn't matter
EXT. SKYLER'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Matt pulls up to Skyler's house.
SKYLER
Thank you.
She gets out of the car.
81.
MATT
I finished the song.
Come by the
roof sometime and I'll play it for
you.
SKYLER
Sure.

ADAM
I have something to show you.
INT. SKYLER'S ROOM - DAY
The room is set up for painting,

ADAM
I 've always thought that your
bedroom could use a little bit more
color.
Maybe we could draw a
design and paint it together?
Skyler looks at the paint colors and the w a l l .
SKYLER
Sure d a d . I'd love t o .
ADAM
Great. We should sketch out some
ideas first.
He picks up a sketch pad and hands her a pencil.
ADAM (CONT'D)
You should finish your painting
sweetie.
INT. S KYLER'S ROOM - LATER
Skyler and Adam are drawing an elaborate design on the wall
of her room.
Dana talks through the intercom.
DANA (0.S .)
Adam, Skyler, come quickly.
They put down their materials and go to find Dana.
I N T . S KYLER'S HOUSE
Dana has just hung up the phone and looks bewildered.
SKYLER
What's the matter?
DANA
Laura Hart is in the hospital.
S h e 's overdosed on her m e d s .
INT.LAURA'S
HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY
Skyler walks into the room alone.Laura Hart looks pale and
weak but smiles when she sees her.
She taps her hand on the
bed to signal Skyler to sit.
Skyler sits.
LAURA
It took this much for you to come
and see me.
SKYLER
I'm so sorry, I
LAURA
Hush.
I'm glad you came.
I missed
my other d a u g h t er. What did you do
to your gorgeous hair?
Skyler laughs and runs her fingers through her hair.
SKYLER
I needed a c h a n ge.
LAURA
I can understand that.
SKYLER
You should have seen it when I
first cut it.
LAURA
Horrific?
SKYLER
Kind of.
LAURA
Regardless, you're always beautiful
to m e .
SKYLER
Are you going to be OK?
LAURA
I '11 be out of here in no t i m e .
Besides, I have to make it to that
showcase of yours.
SKYLER
How did you know about that?
LAURA
Matt sent me an invitation.
SKYLER
He did?
Laura rolls over in bed and grabs an envelope.
LAURA
Indeed. Along with this lovely
note.
SKYLER
He's not a bad guy.
LAURA
I know.
SKYLER
There's something that I've been
wanting to tell you.
LAURA
What's that?
SKYLER
The night before Jezebel died,
stood her up.
She waits for a response.
I
84.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
I was supposed to meet her in
Madison Park.
She sounded
desperate to talk.
But I was with
Jonathan and didn't want to tell
her.
So I stood her up.
LAURA
Oh Sk y l e r .
Skyler begins to cry.
LAURA (CONT'D)
Have you been carrying that all
this time?
SKYLER
I didn't want to tell anyone.
Especially not you.
It feels bad
enough without being held
responsible.
LAURA
Nobody will ever hold you
responsible Skyler.
You were the
best friend my daughter could have
had.
She was troubled.
That's
all.
Besides, how could anyone
blame you when she had a mother
like me?
Skyler embraces her.
SKYLER
I'd love to have a mother like you.
INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM - LATER
Skyler sits in the waiting room with her parents, who discuss
Laura's condition with Calvin and the doctor.
Jonathan
enters.
SKYLER
Hey.
JONATHAN
Hey.
Skyler looks at the d o c t o r .
SKYLER
I was just about to grab something
from the vending machine.
Join me?
JONATHAN
Sure.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY
JONATHAN
I knew this was going to happen.
SKYLER
How could you say that?
JONATHAN
I did.
I punched that hole in the
wall, because she tried to mix her
pills before, and I caught her.
If
she wants to off herself there's
nothing I can do to stop her.
Eventually she will be successful.
I feel like I've cursed my entire
family, and it makes me so angry.
SKYLER
Cursed them?
JONATHAN
Jez tried to confide in me, but I
wouldn't listen to her.
I thought
she was just being weak and would
get over i t .
They reach the vending machine and Jonathan punches
JONATHAN (C O N T 'D )
I could have helped her.
SKYLER
It's not your fault.
It's no one's
fault Jon.
I'm sorry I haven't
been there for you.
JONATHAN
What are we supposed to do now?
SKYLER
Whatever makes us happy.
will work itself out.
EXT. SEATTLE ARBORETUM - DAY

the p a r k .
INT. ART ROOM - NEXT DAY
Skyler enters the art room to find Mr. Collins cleaning up
the room.
SKYLER
I was hoping that I could work on
my painting.
If that's alright
with you.
Mr. Collins smiles and goes to the closet.
MR. COLLINS
Why yes.
I was hoping you'd come.
You have quite the piece here.
Quite the piece indeed.
He pulls out her painting from the closet, and she helps him
to put it onto an easle. He unveils the covering.
SKYLER
Mr. Collins?
MR. COLLINS
Yes Dear?
SKYLER
Do you know where Beatrice lives?
EXT. BEATRICE'S HOUSE
Skyler rings the doorbell and waits.
She rings it a g ain.
There's no response.
BEATRICE (O.S.)
Wait please. I'm coming.
After a moment the door o p e n s .
BEATRICE (CONT'D)
Skyler, you really should not be
here.
SKYLER
I know.
I won't stay long.
wanted to give you t h i s .

She hands her an invitation to the showcase.
87.
BEATRICE
T h a n k s . I hope you w o n 't be
disappointed if I'm not there.
SKYLER
I'm really sorry about your job and
this entire situation.
I wish that
there was something that I could
do.
BEATRICE
It's not your fault at all.
Beatrice sits on the stoop in front of her door.
down next to h e r .
BEATRICE (CONT'D)
I should never have taken it upon
myself to break the rules like
that.
I had no permission to take
you off campus or even hold you
after school.
You parents have
every right to be upset about that.
SKYLER
Whatever.
If it weren't for you
I'd still be eating lunch alone and
living in another world.
Painting
brought me back.
BEATRICE
It will do that.
SKYLER
I knew that you knew, but you never
treated me like that girl who was
missing an arm.
When people
couldn't help but stare, you
treated me like a normal person.
I
don't know how to thank you for
what you did.
BEATRICE
I'm no stranger to loss Skyler.
When I was your age, I lost my
younger brother in a car accident.
Another kid at our school was
driving, but everyone knew.
Painting saved me.
When I heard
about your talent, I thought that
maybe it could do the same for you.
Thank the painting.
Don't thank
me.
Skyler sits
SKYLER
What are you going to do?
BEATRICE
About what? My job?
SKYLER
Yeah.
BEATRICE
Well.
If I'm fired, then I suppose
I'll just have to find another one.
SKYLER
Will you go back to London?
BEATRICE
No.
I like it here.
If I don't
find something right away, it'll be
a nice excuse to work on some
paintings I've been meaning to
finish.
But what's most important
now is getting you ready for that
showcase.
How's the painting
coming?
SKYLER
It needs a little bit more work,
but it'll be ready.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - NIGHT
Students, faculty, and parents have gathered for the end of
the year art showcase.
Works of art are spread across the
auditorium.
Skyler's piece is a three part self portrait
inspired by Frida Kahlo and references to Seattle in the
background.
In the first one, her hair is long and blond,
her body and organs exposed.
In the second one, her hair is
short and dark.
In one hand, she hold a pair of scissors
which has severed a vein that attaches to the first portrait.
In the other hand is a paintbrush.
The third painting
reflects how Skyler looks now.
Her hair is slightly longer
and lighter.
She has a flower in her hair, and the colors
are bright and cheerful. People gather around and talk about
the art.
Everyone loves S k y l e r 's piece.
Skyler looks at the
piece with Laura and Jonathan.
LAURA
(pointing to the first
painting)
You looked just like her.
89.
I know.
SKYLER
I want you to have it.
Laura sm i l e s .
Mr. Davis approaches Skyler.
MR. DAVIS
Skyler.
Beautiful work.
I'd like
to help you get this shown.
SKYLER
Thank you Mr. Davis, but there is
something much more important that
you could help me with.
MR. DAVIS
What's that?
You

SKYLER
could give Beatrice Field her
back.
I know that she broke
school's rules, but so did I.
she only intended to help m e .
she d i d .
MR. DAVIS
I understand Skyler.
I will agree
to talk to Beatrice and your
parents and see if we can't work
something out.
I can't make any
promises but,
SKYLER
Thank you Mr. Davis.
Skyler's parents walk in and look around for her.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
Excuse me.
Skyler walks up to her p a r ents.
SKYLER (CONT'D)
My piece is over there.
She points in the direction of her piece, where quite a few
people are gathered around.
Adam and Dana walk over to the
piece with her.
ADAM
Wow.
Dana is completely q u i e t .
examines it carefully.
She puts a hand to her mouth and
SKYLER
Mom?
Oh Skyler.
DANA
It's beautiful.
She turns around and embraces Skyler.
DANA (CONT'D)
I'm so sorry.
SKYLER
It's OK mom.
ADAM
We should've supported this Sky.
just wish that we had discussed
your interest in art before you
completely gave up on schools.
I
SKYLER
Gave up?
DANA
Yeah honey.
We never really cared
what you chose to study.
We just
wanted you to get a great
education.
ADAM
You can take your time and apply to
schools for Spring admission.
SKYLER
We'll see.
DANA
Skyler.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - LATER THAT NIGHT
People have emptied out, but some are still standing around
and talking.
Laura is immersed in conversation with Skyler
parents.
Skyler and Jonathan sit quietly off to themselves
Beatrice walks and approaches Mr. Davis.
BEATRICE
I know that I'm not allowed to be
here, but I had to see my student's
work.
91.
BEATRICE (CONT'D)
I do hope that you can understand
that, and I'll be happy to leave as
soon as I do.
Before Mr. Davis can answer, Dana interjects.
DANA
I don't think that will be
necessary, do you Mr. Davis?
Mr. Davis shakes his head.
MR. DAVIS
No not at all.
Her piece is right
over t h e r e .
Beatrice goes to examine the piece. Skyler, elated,
her.
joins
SKYLER
Well? What do you think?
BEATRICE
I couldn't have done better myself.
Job well done.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - NIGHT
Adam, Dana, and Skyler say goodbye to Laura and Jonathan.
JONATHAN
Celebration dinner?
SKYLER
When?
JONATHAN
Tomorrow?
SKYLER
This isn't a date is it?
Jonathan pauses.
JONATHAN
No.
SKYLER
Good.
I wouldn't want us to get
ahead of ourselves.
Jonathan la u g h s .
EXT. M A T T 'S HOUSE - LATER THAT NIGHT
Skyler approaches the bottom of the ladder and coug h s .
MATT (O.S.)
Is that who I think it is?
She begins to climb up.
MATT
(O.S.) (CONT'D)
I'm sorry that I missed the
s howcase.
Skyler reaches the roof to find Matt playing his guitar.
SKYLER
That's OK.
You missed a
masterpiece though.
MATT
I figured you'd let me get a good
look at it before it goes on its
museum world t o u r .
SKYLER
I suppose.
MATT
So it went well then?
SKYLER
Yes. I think that the piece will
bode well for my application to
Yale.
MATT
Yale huh?
SKYLER
Yep. Now I just have to tell my
parents.
MATT
I'm sure they'll be pleased.
She smi l e s .
MATT (C O N T 'D )
So much for going against the
grain.
SKYLER
Well, I'll be studying art of
course.
MATT
You could always defer for a year.
SKYLER
I have to get in first.
MATT
You'll get in.
SKYLER
It's freezing up here.
you doing?
What are
MATT
I was just about to go back inside.
I finally finished the song.
SKYLER
Let's hear it.
MATT
I'm not sure if it's ready.
SKYLER
Oh come on.
Stop being so uptight.
Matt laughs and pulls out his guitar, accepting the
challenge.
Skyler spreads out comfortably and listens as he
plays a song that he wrote for Jezebel.
INT. SKYLER'S ROOM - MORNING
The room is painted with a mural of bright c o l o r s .

INT. SKYLER'S BATHROOM
Skyler runs the water and splashes her face.
She looks into

DANA (O.S.)
Skyler, breakfast!
INT. SKYLER'S KITCHEN
Skyler eats her breakfast while Dana stands up against the
wall and talks on the phone.
DANA
We're really still deciding.
We
might just stay in Seattle and
enjoy the summer here as a family.
Adam pours coffee into his mug while reading on his ipad.
Skyler finishes.
SKYLER
Bye Dad.
ADAM
Bye S k y .

Just as the house is out of sight,
she turns from the radio to a CD and continues.
