1186 - Restoration of the Bulgarian state
1396 - 1878 - Bulgaria was under the Turkish Yoke
The well-organized national liberation movement stared in the
middle of 19th century. One of the main figures was Vassil Levski
1876 - The April Uprising broke out
1878 - The Liberation from Ottoman domination
1878 - 1944 - Bulgaria was a constitutional monarchy
1944 - 1989 - Bulgaria was a people’s republic, governed
by the communist party
Since 10th of November 1989 Bulgaria has been a parliamentary republic.
Bulgarian president now is Georgi Parvanov and the Prime minister is Simeon

St. Trifon's Day
The national holidays
In the agricultural calendar, St. Trifon's Day celebrates the pruning of the vines, and is held on February 14.
Kukerov Den
On the first Sunday before Lent, Kukerov Den celebrates the start of the agricultural year, and all over
Bulgaria you can witness processions led by the dancing. leaping Kukeri dressed in colourful masks and
costumes.
Baba Marta
Baba Marta is celebrated on March 1 when peasant house-holds brush out the winter cobwebs with a
traditional spring clean. and people offer each other tokens of good luck called martenitsas.
Kukeri
Like western countries. the Bulgarian calendar is dotted with important feast days and festivals. The festival
of the Kukeri re-enacts ancient surovaki rites to ward off evil spirits and Kukeri fertility rites. Although only
held once every five years, it brings together dancers from all over Bulgaria in a rainbow of colours and
styles.
St. Lazarus Day
Lazaruvane is also celebrated in spring on St. Lazarus Day, and here village girls considered fit for marriage
perform ritual songs and dances.
St. Konstantin and St. Elena Day
The coming of summer is traditionally celebrated on St. Konstantin and St. Elena Day on May 21, and in
some of the remoter villages in the Stranzha hills fire dancing, dancing on heated coals, is still practised in
celebration of summer's arrival. Ethnologists have suggested that this practice is directly descended from
Dionysina rites of the ancient Thracian

Bulgarian Libraries the oldest, the most numerous and widespread cultural and
information institutions in Bulgaria
• Historical facts
– 865 AD - Brothers Cyril and Methodius gave the Slavic alphabet to the world
– Prior to the Ottoman oppression in 1396 - the Monastic libraries became centers
for learning and culture
– Centuries of Ottoman occupation (1396 - 1878) - had other more subtle effects on
library and scholarly communication
– The middle of 19th century - the first public libraries appeared in response to a
specific need of society during the Bulgarian Renaissance (in 1856 was established
the first Bulgarian chitalishte and its library in Svishtov)
– 1869- the establishment of the first scientific library - the Central library of the
Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
– 1897 - The first Government decree for the deposit copy and the deposit system;
the beginning of the National bibliography.
– The years of socialism (1944 - 1989) - libraries were heavily dependent on
communist ideology, they existed in a well - developed hierarchical, state-regulated
system

The major libraries in the national library information system with the biggest
contributions are the following:
"St. Cyril and St. Methodius" National Library - founded in 1878. Its holdings consist of about seven million
library units. It is the archives of Bulgarian literature, center of the national bibliography, and
a scientific institute.
Central scientific libraries - six libraries. They provide specialized library information services,
according to their profile. They are founded mainly at universities and academies and
their holdings consist of about ten million units altogether.
University libraries - 84 libraries.
3 877 public libraries includes:
12 libraries are Regional libraries ( public libraries with regional responsibilities)- consult and
conduct qualification activities of smaller public libraries in the district, maintain union
catalogs of their holdings. 15 libraries are municipality library.
