The toy craft of Sergiev
Posad
Образовательный центр «Нива»
Sergiev Posad is our native city and its interesting to know some facts from its
history. So, we tried to explore the historical hereditary of the place where we
live. We think people should know the history of their country and remember
the words of Pavel Florensky: « Do not forget your relationship, your past, learn
your great parents and your great – great parents… Otherwise your life will be
boring». At our English lessons we spoke and read a lot of folk crafts of Sergiev
Posad and got interested in the history of Sergiev Posad very much. We are
proud of our city and know much of its great past.

Traditional matryoshka from Sergiev Posad
Sergiev Posad was the place
where the first nesting dolls
was made. Traditionally
matryoshkas are nested dolls.
The first doll in the nest was
a girl dressed in a sarafan and
wearing a kerchief. She was
called matryoshka from the
Russian name Matryona. Each
this doll has an apron and a
kerchief of not coinciding
colours. Put in a row, the dolls
are all many coloured and
different. The big matryoshka
is from 9 cm. of height, the
smallest one is about 1 cm.

handpainted matryoshka-doll.
Outside doll is holding the
branch of the rowan-tree. It
is a Sergiev Posad
matryoshka-doll. In Sergiev
Posad, which is a forest
region, people have always
liked to paint matryoshka-doll
with berries or baskets full of
bright berries. Wearing a sprig
of the Rowan also protected
against charms. The tallest
doll is 12 cm, the shortest one
is 2 cm.

Traditional matryoshka from Sergiev Posad
It was a long-established tradition
in Russian toy-making trade to
manufacture hollow wooden dolls,
one inserted into the other. It is
irrelevant whether the Russian
toy makers had a previous
knowledge of the similar
Japanese dolls or not when they
developed the concept of the
matryoshka doll. The actual
design of the doll is not so
significant as the artistic concept
of insert-ing dolls into one
another which is intrinsically
organic to the Russian mentality.
Put in a row, the dolls are all
many coloured and different.
The big matryoshka is from 13
cm., the smallest one is about 2
cm.

Matryoshka Burnished
The big matryoshka is 10-15 cm,
the smallest one is about 2
cm. Playing with the
matryoshka is first, an
acquaintance with sequence and
notions ‘less’ and ‘more’,
secondly, counting from 1 to
5, thirdly, a material for
development of children’s
tactile sense and fine motor
skills, fourthly, an article for
a game with a plot. This
wooden doll decorates any
place it appears and keeps the
warmth of the hands of the
craftsman.

Nesting doll of Sergiev Posad Angel
Religious motifs in Russian
matryoshka paintings are
connected with the fact that
this sort is deeply rooted in
Old Russian iconographic
traditions. Very often the
painter concentrated mainly on
the figure, face of the
person. This tradition of the
Old Russian art came from
Byzantium where this technique
came from the ancient Rome.
