London, the capital of Great Britain is situated on the
banks of the Thames. It is one of the biggest cities in the
world, a great industrial and cultural centre. Many visitors
come to London and go sightseeing about it. London is
famous for its sights.
LONDON AS A CULTURAL
CENTRE
London has many different faces.
-There is the West End, a
fashionable
shopping
and
entertainment centre, where mostly
well-to-do people live.
-There is Mayfair stretching from
the West End along Park Lane to
Marble Arch.
LONDON
London is the capital city of England
and of the United Kingdom situated on
the Thames river, the largest city in
Britain and one of the largest cities in
the world.
Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace is one
of the most interesting
places in London for the
tourists.
It is the residence of the
Queen of Britain.
Buckingham Palace was
built in 1703 for the Duke
of Buckingham.
There are about 600
rooms on three main
floors, about 400 people
work at the Palace.

Westminster Abbey
It was founded in 1050 as
a monastery.
Westminster Abbey is in
the center of London .
Westminster Abbey is the
place where the coronation
of all British Kings and
Queens takes place.
Many great Englishmen
are buried in the Abbey:
Newton, Darwin, Byron
and others.
Standing not far from the Houses of Parliament,
Westminster Abbey is a symbol of England. The
legend says that Westminster Abbey was founded
by St Peter himself. We know that Westminster
Abbey was built by King Edward in 1065. The
coronation of all British Kings and Queens takes
place in Westminster Abbey. Some famous
English people are also buried here. The funeral
service for Diana, Princess of Wales took place in
Westminster Abbey in September 1997.
The Houses of Parliament
The Houses of Parliament is
situated on the bank of the
Thames.
The British Parliament sits in a
building called the Palace of
Westminster or the Houses of
Parliament.
There are two Houses: the
House of Lords and the House
of Commons.
The head of a state is the Queen.
People who sit in the House of
Commons are called Members
of Parliament.
People who sit in the House of
Lords are called hereditary
peers.
The famous clock Big Ben stands near the
Houses of Parliament. The country’s leaders
speak in the Houses of Parliament. The men
and women there are the voice of the British
people. The Houses of Parliament stand
beside the river Thames. You can go on a
boat from Westminster and see London from
the river. You can also see Big Ben and the
Houses of Parliament from Westminster
Big Ben
Big Ben is the name of a
huge clock on one of the
tall towers of the Houses
of Parliament.
The Clock Tower is about
95 meters high.
The clock is one of the
finest and the most
accurate in the world.
There are 334 steps to
reach the top of the tower.
The hour hand is 274 cm
long.
The minute hand is 496
cm long.
Tourist in London always want to
visit Westminster and Big Ben. They want to
see the clock in its tower and to hear the bells
. Big Ben is really a bell. You head it every
hour. It is a big bell. It weighs 13,720
kilograms. It has a deep tone and you can
hear it on the radio: “This is the BBC. The time
is six o'clock.” And then you hear the deep
Tower Bridge
Not far from the Tower of London is Tower of
Bridge, built across the Thames in 1894.
Tower Bridge gives a good view of the city.
You can see the Tower of London from the river
Thames. The Tower is very old. It has a long and
cruel history. It is not just one building. The tall
building is the Write Tower, the oldest part of the
Tower of London. The Bloody Tower is near the river.
You do not see blood there today. But the Bloody
Tower has a history of blood – the blood of men,
women and even children.
Now the King and Queen of Britain do not live in the
Tower. When the Queen is in London, she stays in
Buckingham Palace.
St. Paul's Cathedral
Saint Paul’s is the cathedral
of the City of London.
The Cathedral, the greatest
of English churches, was
designed and built by Sir
Christopher Wren, the most
outstanding English
architect.
Today St. Paul's Cathedral
is a symbol of London.
Parks and Gardens of London.
Regent's Park and Hyde Park
