Ethical Review in
Educational Research
• The consideration of ethical
issues in research is crucial
to the high quality of any
study – small or large.
• All research involving
human participants or their
tissue, or their data is
subject to ethical review
(c) University of Sheffield - December 2007

• Your tutor will advise you
on ethical review
procedures when s/he sets
your assignment task.
• You will be advised if your
assignment has been
reviewed en bloc’ or
whether you need to seek
individual ethical approval
for your specific enquiry

4
EN BLOC ethical review
• If your assignment has been
ethically reviewed en bloc’
your tutor will give you details
of the ethical procedures you
must follow as you carry out
the study.
• Other students will be following
the same ethical procedures
which your tutor has already
received approval for from the
Ethics Review Panel.
(c) University of Sheffield - December 2007
5
Individually designed
research studies
• Students decide (in consultation
with their tutor/supervisor) if ethics
approval is required by working
through the Applicants’ Ethics
Checklist.
• The checklist helps you to decide if
ethics review is required.
• This should be included in your
assignment when it is submitted.
(c) University of Sheffield - December 2007
6
If, in consultation with your tutor, you
decide that ethical review is
necessary the following should be
completed electronically:
• Applicants’ Ethics Checklist
• School of Education Research Ethics
Application form
• School of Education Participant
Information Sheet
• School of Education Participant
Consent Form
Use what you have covered in your
course on ethics to help you. The
School of Education ethics website
also contains support material.

7
When your tutor advises you
to do so you should submit
all completed forms
electronically to the
secretary of your
course/programme.
(c) University of Sheffield - December 2007
8
The secretary (in
consultation with
Course/Programme
Director) sends the review
forms to reviewers.
(c) University of Sheffield - December 2007
9
Reviewers return completed form,
electronically, usually within 2
weeks to the secretary.
Secretary reports outcome to
Course/Programme Director.
If reviewers approve, secretary
informs you in writing and will ask
you to send a hard copy of Part B
(Declaration) of the School of
Education Research ethics
application form to the course
secretary who logs the decision on
the ethics database.
(c) University of Sheffield - December 2007
10
If ethics reviewers do not
grant ethical approval,
the application is
referred back to
tutor/supervisor to
discuss with student
and amended forms
can be submitted.

11
IMPORTANT
Your research must be ethically
reviewed BEFORE you begin
Assignments will not be marked
if they require ethical review
and procedures have not been
followed.
Work submitted without
documentation confirming
ethical approval will be
returned unmarked.

Finally…
Ethical review is not
• add on’
• an optional extra’
Ethical Review is
• the means by which the University
can be sure that you and your
research participants are protected
• a way of giving students the benefit
of critical comment from academic
staff on addressing the ethical
issues in your enquiry
