The College Application Process
How to Gather Information about Colleges:
пѓјVisit Mrs. Duggan in the College Counseling Office.
пѓјMeet College reps. during lunch periods. A calendar of
colleges visiting can be found on the counseling page
of the Saint Viator web site. You can also sign up to
receive an e-mail reminder of college visits on your
individual Family Connection page.
пѓјExplore the internet. (Princeton Review and
Collegeboard are two great websites.)
пѓјListen to the announcements and look at the bulletin
board outside the Counseling Office for info.
пѓјVisit college campuses.
Check out the “College Handbook” & the “Book of Majors”
in Mrs. Duggan’s office or the counseling office.
What do colleges
for:
(in order of importance)
1.
School Achievement (your high school
transcript is the most important thing
colleges will look at)
2. Test scores (Act/SAT)
3. Recommendations (if required)
4. Essay (if required)
5. Interview (if required)
6. Activities (not a list of everything, rather
those showing leadership, dedication, or
uniqueness.)
There are 3 ways to complete
a college application
 Online application
(preferred by most colleges)
 Common application
(accepted by over 300 colleges)
 Paper application
Online Application
 Fill out the online application and download a completed
copy for your files.
 Download the counselor or school form if it is required.
 Come to the counseling office and fill out a transcript
request form AFTER you have submitted your online
application.
 Attach the counselor/school form to the transcript request
and place in the completed application basket in the
counseling office.
DEADLINES ARE IMPORTANT!
Common Application
 Fill out the Common Application online at www.commonapp.org or
download a paper application to fill out and mail.
Most
colleges prefer the online method.
 Many schools will have a supplemental form to also fill out
online.
 Complete the online application and then download the
TEACHER EVALUATION forms, if required by the
school, to give to one or two teachers depending on the
school.
 Download the SCHOOL REPORT, MID-YEAR REPORT, AND
FINAL REPORT if required by the school.
 Come to the counseling office and fill out a transcript request
form AFTER you have submitted your online application.
 Attach all required forms to the transcript request and place in the
completed application basket in the counseling office
DEADLINES ARE IMPORTANT!
Paper Application
Read all directions carefully.
 Fill out application COMPLETELY.
 Be sure to sign the application.
 Bring completed application, along with application fee, to
the counseling office.
 Fill out a transcript request form.
 Attach all required forms to the transcript request and
place in the completed application basket in the
counseling office
SUMMARY
Steps to take at Saint Viator when filing a college application:
•
Complete all the required information. Be sure to sign the paper
application.
•
Note carefully all deadlines.
•
Request letters of recommendation from teachers, if needed. Be sure to
give them 10 school days to write the letter. Give teachers a
date the letter
is due in the Counseling Office.
•
Complete a TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORM available in the Counseling
Office.
•
Attach all required documents to the transcript request form.
•
ACT/SAT Scores.
•
•
We are required to send all scores that are reported to us. You can
request that we not send any scores.
If you only want a particular score sent, you can request individual
scores directly from ACT by going to their website www.act.org.
EXPECT FIFTEEN (15) SCHOOL DAYS
FOR PROCESSING.
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
1.
All students should fill out a STUDENT SELF-ASSESSMENT FORM.
2.
Return STUDENT SELF-ASSESSMENT to your Ethics teacher so it can be
added to your file. Please keep a copy for yourself. (Extra copies
may be made for teacher use.)
3.
Ask teachers personally to write you a letter of recommendation.
4.
Give the teacher a copy of your STUDENT SELF-ASSESSMENT FORM
and the REQUEST FOR LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FORM.
Inform teachers of required deadlines.
5.
Establish with each teacher whether he/she will give you the letter
directly or if it will be turned in to the college counselor to be
mailed with
the application.
6.
Take time to thank the people who help you with the application process.

пѓјScholarship Transcript Request
If you apply for scholarships, you
must use this form to request
a scholarship transcript.
Many colleges request
you send your 1st semester
senior year transcript in
January.
Financial Aid Info.
• FAFSA paper forms will be
available in December.
• FAFSA can be applied for on of
after January 1, 2009
• Attend the Financial Aid Night
at Saint Viator. (November 19
at 7PM in the auditorium.)
VERY Important Tips
• Senior Year Counts. (see next
slide)
• GPA can still change!
• All college admissions are
temporary.
• Colleges review your final
transcript after graduation.
